The most dramatic scenery and the most visited attractions are all within minutes of us, including Gooseberry State Park, Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, Palisade Head and Shovel Point. Inland, the sprawling Tettegouche State Park and its miles of hiking, skiing and snowmobile trails will take you to the wilderness of Palisade Valley and the Superior Hiking Trail. 4 Silver Bay The Heart of Lake Superior s North Shore Silver Bay was forest and sparsely settled shoreline until 1951 when Reserve Mining Company began to clear land for an entire town and taconite processing plant. Reserve was owned by four steel companies, chiefly Armco and Republic Steel. The name Reserve came from the idea that iron from taconite wouldn t be needed for a long time but that wasn t true. Dr. E. W. Davis at the University of Minnesota had spent most of his career developing a process to refine the very hard taconite ore. He succeeded and enabled the birth of Silver Bay. He lived with his wife in Silver Bay until his death in Over the next few years, a forty-mile section of railroad was built between Silver Bay and Babbitt. Harbor breakwalls, the huge plant, and a community complete with schools and a shopping center were also built. The first families moved to the new town in The plant was dedicated as the E. W. School was named for the first president of Reserve. By 1960, the population was 3723 and the plant was going full blast; ore boats were taking high grade iron pellets made here to steel mills in Ohio. However, in the mid 60s, concerns were raised about the possible harm of the tailings (waste rock) being deposited in Lake Superior. Although no medical harm has ever been shown from the tailings, it was true that they were not going to the bottom of Lake Superior as planned. After several years, Reserve was required to build huge holding ponds for the tailings inland at Milepost Seven of the railroad. Then the steel industry became depressed and plant operations slowed down until 1986 when the plant closed and the town went through great stress, losing almost half its population. In 1989, Cyprus Minerals was awarded the operation for a fraction of its worth. The plant was renovated and sold in 1994 to Cleveland Cliffs Company, its current owner, and was renamed Northshore Mining. Silver Bay into a destination for sport fishing, sailing and pleasure boaters. Silver Bay has become the North Shore s hub for many trail systems, including the acclaimed Superior Hiking Trail and the Gitchi Gami State Biking and Walking Trail. Countless miles of ATV and snowmobile trails fan out from town and access the North Shore State Snowmobile Trail. We are a gateway to the Superior National Forest and world famous Silver Bay To Airport Silver Bay Golf Course Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, which include countless rivers, lakes, streams and acres of forest to explore. Silver Bay is now a city of 2016 people. The plant is doing well; the schools have consolidated to one building and continue to prepare its Mariners for the future, and we continue to provide all the services of a thriving community. 6 GEORGE POPE Beaver Bay Unique History to Discover Beaver Bay was founded in 1856 by primarily German pioneers who arrived on the steamer Illinois. It was accessible only by water until 1899, when a sleigh trail went through from Two Harbors to Grand Marais. In 1924, a road finally reached it. Beaver Bay was the home of the famous John Beargrease, who delivered mail by dogsled along the North Shore and for whom the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon is named. The village was the first Lake County seat and included a sawmill and grist mill powered by the Beaver River, a tannery and school and was home to intrepid Lake Superior fishermen. Extensive logging operations even included railroads operated by Alger Smith Logging Company until 1910 when the forests were devastated by logging and recurrent fires. The bay was an active harbor which docked the largest steamships on Lake Superior. Several schools were built over the years. In 1928, a two-room school was built and remained in service until the 50s. Students from the new Silver Bay attended school there. Today it is the Green Door Bar and Liquor Store! Tourism has been Beaver Bay s industry since The Beaver Bay Inn, built in the 40s, remains open. 8 Finland Rich in Heritage Finland is a little town dating back to 1907 when Finn- Swedes moved there because of the similarity of the area to their home country. The territory where the country of Finland currently exists was controlled by Sweden until 1809 when it was taken over by Russia. It became an independent country in So Finland, Minnesota was named 12 years before the country! Logging was the main activity; the Alger Smith Logging Company had a major line of their railroad, called the Duluth and Northern Minnesota or the Alger Line, to Finland by Many spurs were built, and there was an extensive camp at Lax Lake, a few miles away. In 1950, the Finland Air Base was built on the top of a nearby mountain as part of the Pine Tree Line of defense against nuclear attack. It was closed in 1978; several families continue to live on top of the mountain. Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center, a prize winning school opened in 1988, sits high above the forest near town. Over 16,000 people a year, primarily students from the Midwest, experience a unique immersion in the environment there. GEORGE POPE Today, Finland is a thriving community proud of its heritage. Several Finnish celebrations are held yearly, including St. Urho s Day and Pikku Joulu. The John Pine Heritage Site east of town contains several of the buildings and tools of the original pioneers, including the original Park Hill School and the Heritage Museum. Finland is the home of a DNR Fisheries and Forestry office, several restaurants, the Finland Coop Store, and several other businesses. 9 TETTEGOUCHE STATE PARK OVERLOOK EXPLORE MINNESOTA TOURISM PHOTO Little Marais Quiet and Relaxing The Little Marais area was settled in the 1880s as a fishing port, with the catch being sold to Booth Fisheries. Ben Fenstad arrived in 1890; many of his descendants still live in the area and operate the Fenstad Resort, which has been going strong for the past 75 years. Tourist cabins, a school, gas station, telephone company, and post office were built as the years went by. Many of these operations have faded into history, but new ones, including the gift shops Fish Out of Water, Spirit of Gitche Gumee, and Eagle s Nest, which also manages Lakeside Cabins, are doing well. If you are looking for a unique, quiet, out of the way place to stay, Little Marais is the area for you! 9

10 Trail Systems What Kind Of Trail Do You Want To Explore? We ve already talked a little about our superb system of trails. Since we are the hub of all the trails on the North Shore, here s more: The Superior Hiking Trail currently extends 205 miles from Two Harbors almost to Canada. Another section from Jay Cooke State Park through Duluth has been completed. Within the next few years the two segments will be united and the entire trail will become part of the North Country Trail, extending across the nation! The Penn Avenue parking area in Silver Bay is the largest access point to the trail. GEORGE POPE The North Shore State Snowmobile Trail runs from Duluth to Grand Marais and passes through Silver Bay and Finland, paralleling the shore several miles inland. You can get to North Dakota from here! The Penn Avenue parking area is also an access point for that trail. We have an additional 88 miles of snowmobile and ATV trails in our area linking our communities. Moose Walk, deep in the wilderness, is full of, well, moose. These trails are meticulously maintained by the Silver Trail Riders, a local organization. The Gitchi Gami State biking, walking, and inline skating Trail will eventually extend from Duluth to Grand Marais near the shore, providing continual views of the lake. A 12 mile section starts in Beaver Bay and runs to Gooseberry State Park. For kayakers, the Lake Superior Water Trail includes many dedicated areas to beach the boats and camp along the entire shore, including Silver Bay s Bayside Park, Black Brach, and several others in the area. Cross country skiing is convenient, plentiful, and beautiful. The Northwoods Ski Touring Trail, just west of Silver Bay, has over 28 kilometers of lovingly groomed single track diagonal trails. It connects to the Tettegouche State Park system with many more kilometers of skiing through some of the most beautiful forest on the shore. 11 State Parks and Forests Lush Forests and Breathtaking Scenery Two of Minnesota s best known State Parks, Split Rock and Tettegouche, are in our area. Split Rock Lighthouse State Park is 8 miles down the shore from Silver Bay and offers cart-in camping along a long stretch of shoreline and a very popular 5 mile loop hike up and down the Split Rock River, as well as other extensive hiking and cross country skiing trails. Call for details. The Minnesota Historical Society operates the Split Rock Lighthouse. They offer tours led by knowledgeable Keepers in period costumes. Tettegouche State Park is one of Minnesota s largest at 9300 acres and encompasses great variety, from Shovel Point on the shore to the Baptism River and its multiple waterfalls including the 60-foot High Falls, to the Palisade Valley wilderness with 23 miles of hiking and skiing trails and the unique Tettegouche Camp originally a logging camp on MicMac Lake. It s at the junction of Highway 61 and Highway One on the Baptism River, 5 miles up the shore from Silver Bay. Call Lesser known and therefore not so frequently visited, is George H. Crosby- Manitou, 7 miles northeast of Finland, along the Manitou River and Benson Lake, with its otters. Gooseberry State Park is one of the most visited in the state. It s about 15 miles down the shore from Silver Bay. Gooseberry Falls is often spectacular. There are miles of hiking and cross country skiing trails for you to enjoy. Palisade Head s sheer cliffs are popular with rock climbers and peregrine falcons, who KARSTEN HOGENSON nest there. There are incredible views from the top and excellent blueberry picking in the area. It s only 2 miles from Silver Bay. Call Local parks are also worth a visit. The Scenic Overlook off Outer Drive in Silver Bay provides several vistas of the shoreline and town. Mariner Mountain Park in town has trails and a playground. Bayside Park at the Silver Bay Marina is a tourist destination with picnic facilities, beach access, and great views. In the Finland area, camping is available along the Baptism River at Eckbeck and Finland State campgrounds. Finally, the huge Boundary Waters Canoe Area and the vast Superior National Forest are accessed from Highway One north of Finland. PAT KELLEY 11

14 More Things To Do We ve already talked about a lot to do in our area. But there s more! In Silver Bay, the Bay Area Historical Society records the construction of the town and the mining company, both of which were begun in Free tours of the "plant" and the Milepost 7 Holding Ponds begin from the Historical Society in the summer months. We have an excellent library, lighted tennis courts, a skateboard park, horseshoe pits, a bowling alley, and ice skating at the newly remodeled Rukavina Arena. We have beautiful parks (see the Parks page), and an extensive community education program including Community Theatre. Finally, our Municipal Liquor Store and Lounge offers wine, beer, and spirits and a congenial bar where karaoke is periodically offered. East Beaver Bay, between the marina and Beaver Bay, is home for Beaver Bay Sports which rents, sells, and repairs ATVs and snowmobiles. They also sell and repair boats, motors, and just about everything else you d need to enjoy our area s outdoors. The Flea Market has an extensive collection of old glass and other antiques for sale and is one of the busiest places on the shore. When the lamprey infestation was controlled years ago, Lake Superior rebounded as a fishery for lake trout. Various species of salmon have been introduced and are doing well. Almost all our streams offer a variety of trout species, and support salmon spawning in the spring and fall. Hunting is a major fall activity. The woods are teeming with deer, moose, upland birds, and waterfowl. Please visit for seasonal dates and regulations. As you may have surmised, our area is a naturalist s paradise, in part because Lake Superior funnels migrating birds along the shoreline. The spring migration of warblers back to our area is a sight to behold, and 26 species of warblers stay here to nest. We have many species of butterflies, insects and wildflowers, and interesting geology to explore. Blueberries, several types of raspberries, and other edible berries are abundant on the shore and in the forest. There are countless scenes for photographers and artists, and our weather provides every atmosphere one could want. Even our highways are scenic, and several are under consideration as National Scenic Highways. Highway 61 is the famous route along the shore from Duluth to Canada. Highway One leads from Tettegouche State Park to Ely and takes you on a winding path through deep forest where moose sightings are frequent. A new road, Forest 11, connects Silver Bay to the Iron Range and passes through miles of boreal wilderness. All are allweather roads, meticulously plowed in winter. A real treat awaits the visitor who ventures along our roads, with countless snow-filled vistas. Finally, there is the shore itself, more accessible in our area than any other place on the shoreline, with miles of rugged cliffs, pebble beaches full of agates and driftwood, coves and islands, and the incomparable Lake Superior, sometimes smooth as glass, sometimes raging in a Nor easter, where 1000-foot ore boats, ocean-going freighters, sailboats, cruisers, and kayaks all have plenty of room to sail. 19 GEORGE POPE Mining One of Our Largest Industries SILVER BAY owes its existence to E.W. Davis, mining engineer, who spent 30 years developing a process that would extract iron from low grades of iron ore called taconite. In the 1940s, Armco Steel and Republic Steel committed to building a taconite processing plant in Silver Bay capable of producing 10,000,000 tons of pellets per year, and two cities to house the workers at Babbitt and Silver Bay. Almost overnight the population of the bay area exploded from 100 to nearly 4,000 with the establishment of Silver Bay in A seven-foot iron statue, Rocky Taconite, came to symbolize Reserve Mining and Silver Bay as the Taconite Capital of the world. The plant experienced setbacks and closures during the 70s and 80s, but was reborn in 1988 when Cyprus Minerals of Denver bought Reserve and reopened the plant. Cyprus-Northshore Mining was then bought by Cleveland Cliffs in 1994 and today is known as Northshore Mining Co., providing employment for area residents. Northshore Mining has achieved both the ISO Environmental Certification and ISO 900 Quality Certification. Northshore Mining is committed to being a responsible producer of iron pellets for the steel industry. The public is invited to take a free tour (approx. 1.5 hrs. in duration) of the Northshore Mining operation. Tours are available from mid-june to early September. These tours include the explanation of the plant operation, a bus tour of the facility and a walking tour of the processing section of the plant. Casual clothing and shoes are recommended. This year, the theme is Taconite, and we re very excited because North Shore Mining will provide train rides from Silver Bay to Mile Post Seven on Saturday. But the fun begins Friday night, July 24 with a street dance in Silver Bay. Saturday morning, the Fourth Annual Bay to Bay Road and Trail run and walk, which is becoming an increasingly popular event, begins at 8:45 AM in Silver Bay. It s a 10 kilometer course between Silver Bay and Beaver Bay, over half of which is on the Superior Hiking Trail and runs in part along the scenic Beaver River. Go to silverbay.com to enter! At noon, we ll have a parade in Silver Bay followed by a Mud Run, where ATV s attempt to get through a course of, well, mud. A Car Show starts at 10 AM. We ll have another Street Dance, this time in Beaver Bay, at 8 PM. At 9:30 PM there will be a Venetian Boat Parade with lighted boats at the Marina. Sunday, there will be an ecumenical service in Silver Bay. Events end with a Model Plane demonstration in Silver Bay.
