6 THE CITY OF STONES UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE MATERA The original urban nucleus was born rising from the natural caves excavated into the rock and then modelled in more and more complex structures within two large natural amphitheatres that are Sasso Cavenoso and Sasso Barisano. In 1952 the Sassi di Matera, by order of the Italian government, were emptied by most of its inhabitants due to the poor conditions of poverty and degradation in which they were so called the Shame of Italy. After about 40 years, in 1993, the Sassi di Matera and the Parco delle Chiese Rupestri were named World Heritage Sites by UNESCO thanks to an important process of rehabilitation and redevelopment. In 2019 Matera will be European Capital of Culture. Today the Sassi di Matera offer the visitors a great cultural landscape. From an architectural point of view they present an incredible series of elements that have been stratified over time, from the rock complexes excavated by man, to the rock churches, burial areas, which continually alternate with buildings from any different era: Middle Ages, Renaissance, baroque until modern times. The visitor will continually find caves, hypogea, palazzotti, churches, neighbourhoods, stairways, balconies, gardens and vegetable gardens all nestled with each other to form a unique and magical place. The over 150 rock churches, with their splendid Byzantine frescoes, compose the homonymous regional park. Not far from the city, the Crypt of the Original Sin, is also known as the Sistine Chapel of rock wall painting. In Matera, culture is also visible in the numerous museums and cultural centres set in ancient houses of great beauty. IN 2019 MATERA WILL BE EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE.

The visit will end with a short walk through the historic center. At the end, lunch in a restaurant. In the afternoon a guided tour of Tuscania, one of the most important Etruscan necropolis and Bolsena, where we will visit the Basilica di Santa Cristina, Rocca Monaldeschi, the Church of San Francesco and the famous volcanic lake that takes its name from the namesake city. At the end, return to the hotel in Viterbo, dinner and overnight stay. DAY 3 After breakfast, the morning will be dedicated to discovering Civita di Bagnoregio, called the City that dies. At the end of the visit, we will pass through the characteristic towns of Minori, Maiori, Cetara until we get to Vietri sul Mare where we will stop in one of the most prestigious ceramics factories. DAY 3 After breakfast, departure to Pompeii for a guided tour of the archaeological excavations of the ancient Roman city buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, whose archaeological remains are the perfect testimony of the life that took place at that time.
