3 MARKET OVERVIEW HINTON TOWNSITE Hinton is located in west-central Alberta, 81 kilometers northeast of Jasper and about 284 kilometers west of Edmonton. It is a regional service center with an economy driven by coal mining, forestry, oil and gas and tourism. Hinton is a multi-industry town that includes coal mining, pulp & paper, forestry, health services and education. West Fraser is one of the largest timber companies in North America and it has been in operation in Hinton since 1955, employing over 520 people today. Teck Coal, one of the country s largest mining companies, has an operation just outside of town, and also serves as a major employer for Hinton. The Duvernay Gas Field is north of Hinton and is one of the largest gas fields in the world. While the price of natural-gas is low, this field produces a specific type of gas with high proportions of condensate that is highly sought-after. In 2006, the population of Hinton was 9,738. The population is expected to reach 12,597 by 2019, based on the 2% annual growth rate assumed by the Town of Hinton. With an average household size of 2.5 people, the Town is expected to require an additional 1,143 units to accommodate the additional population growth of 2,859 people by Notable demographic trends include an increase in the number and percentage of young adults between the ages of 20 to 34. Similar to the trends observed in other Alberta municipalities, the Town has a growing population of residents aged 45 years and over. With an aging population, the Town will need more seniors housing, including assisted living and aging in place facilities, to accommodate the changing needs of independent and dependent seniors. Overall Hinton has experienced the effect of oil prices but population has grown and there has been an increased need for rental accommodations.
4 VISTA COAL PROJECT HINTON COAL MINE Coalspur s Vista Coal Project is one of North America s largest undeveloped coal mines, spreading over an area of 9.9 hecatres. The Coalspur formation has sixcontinuouscoal zones: Val d Or, Arbour, McLeod, McPherson, Silkstone and Mynheer. The project was applied for in 1982 by Manalta Coal, and was approved by the Energy Resources Conservation Board in 1993, but was never constructed. The mine will extend from 15 km east of Hinton and cover the NW side of the McLeod River. Hinton and surrounding area has a population of 20,000 people, which will provide a foundation of skilled labour to this coal mine (over 500 people will be employed when fully operational). The opening of the new coal mine as well as Hinton s close proximity to the mountains will be sure to attract future employees.
