2 WELCOME TO BEER BY TRAM. Welcome to the latest edition of the popular Beer by Tram guide produced by NET in partnership with CAMRA. City and its surrounding suburbs are home to a large number of real ale pubs, many of which are easily accessible via the tram network. Following the launch of the new lines, the scope has now widened, giving real ale lovers the opportunity to explore a wider area. If you are a shire resident or a first time visitor to the city, this guide is a fun way to explore the area, even if you may end up a bit blurry eyed by the end of it! This pocket sized guide has been designed to act as a trail, giving readers the option to get on at any tram stop and find the nearest pub to them. 3 LET S PINT YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION!.. The beer scene in the conurbation is thriving in a way we have not seen before and is probably in better health than anywhere else in the country. This is demonstrated by the annual Robin Hood Beer and Cider Festival held in the grounds of Castle and enjoyed by over 25,000 customers in just three and a half days, judged by many to be the best beer festival in the country. Not only do we now have twenty breweries in the immediate area and almost fifty more within a twenty mile radius but we also have a fantastic selection of pubs offering a wide choice of these beers. Many of these pubs also offer good food, traditional ciders and a warm welcome. They are all worth visiting and what better way than to reach them but our newly extended tram network? It is a sad fact that the country is losing pubs at the rate of 29 per week, and has witnessed its share of these closures. Undoubtedly, the best way of keeping our pubs in business is to use them more frequently and with the aid of this guide we aim to show you some of the best examples that can be reached easily on the tram. 8 THE MAGPIE TOTON LANE The pub is a short walk from the tram terminus on the other side of the A52. THE DOUBLE TOP T R A M S T O P BRAMCOTE LANE A short walk up Bramcote Lane from the tram stop. Built in the early 1970 s this is a friendly two room pub at the centre of the local community. 10 THE CROWN INN A grade II listed building that has been serving ales since Five distinct drinking areas give a traditional cosy and inviting welcome to this friendly pub. A permanent bar is a new feature in a large and popular outside area. 11 THE STAR INN This popular locals favourite has a tastefully decorated multi roomed interior including a permanent marquee. Outside is an extremely spacious garden and raised patio area. 12 STICK & PITCHER BOULEVARD This bar is situated above the Hockey Centre accessed either through the main Hockey Centre doors or up the metal staircase on the side of the building. THE BOAT INN GREGORY STREET This is a traditional local, formerly a Home Ales pub offering a range of beers from the SIBA list along with a house beer. 13 THE WHITE HART GREGORY STREET This is a prominent white building in the Greene King Meet and Eat style. THE JOHNSON ARMS GREGORY STREET This former Shipstone s house retains the original etched windows, complemented by a green-tiled frontage. Traditional home-cooked food: 12-8 (4 Sun). Magnificent beer garden, with a petanque court, not to be missed. 14 THE NEWSHOUSE NOTTINGHAM STATION Post war re-build of a nineteenth century pub. In times past, newspapers would be read to inform the illiterate of elections at home and military victories overseas, hence the name. THE VAT & FIDDLE NOTTINGHAM STATION Brewery tap for Castle Rock, the brewery towers over the back of the pub, with the full range usually available. A no frills place it concentrates on doing what it does, very well. You must be seated whilst drinking, a condition of their licence. 17 THE BANK 700 YEARS Large open plan popular bar, split into separate areas by use of partitions, with a serving counter on the right as you enter. BELL INN 700 YEARS Arguably the oldest pub in, there are two small bars either side of the main entrance passageway which leads you to the large back bar. 18 MALT CROSS 700 YEARS Situated in an Grade II listed former Victorian Music Hall built in It was extensively restored in 2014 with two lower floors opened up, including caves once inhabited by Carmelite monks. THE NED LUDD 700 YEARS Named after the original Luddite, this former tapas bar became a Craft beer pub, with four handpumps, and several beer fonts. 19 THE ROEBUCK INN 700 YEARS Wetherspoon pub set back from Market Square offering 13 cask ales. YATES 700 YEARS Relatively standard Yates s bar on two floors. Cask ale, mainly from national brands, is only available downstairs. Mirrors, various lighting and dance style décor dominate the bar. 20 THE JOSEPH ELSE 700 YEARS Large two roomed Wetherspoons pub on the site of an Halfords cycle shop. The name comes from the designer of the Lion statutes in front of the Council building just across from the pub. THE BARREL DROP T R A M S T O P ROYAL CENTRE Small micro bar tucked away on one of the small alleyways in the city centre with seating on two levels. LANGTRY S T R A M S T O P ROYAL CENTRE Langtry s took on its current name in 1981 celebrating famed Victorian starlet Lillie Langtry. 23 THE GOOSEBERRY BUSH UNIVERSITY Wetherspoon pub on the site of the old maternity hospital, due to the hills in the area it is effectively on the first floor (disabled access from the car park at the back). THE LION INN & STREE T This freehouse with its central island bar has a large range of cask ales from both local and national breweries. 24 HORSE & GROOM & STREE T Single bar establishment in the shadow of the former Shipstone s brewery. It used to be their social club. It has various old brewery memorabilia dotted about the place. THE NEWSTEAD ABBEY BULWELL FOREST Traditional locals pub built in the 1880s. The main bar has the pool table and sports TV and a further separate bar area offers a large snug. 26 THE BOWMAN Large comfortable pub that whilst open plan has separate dining/drinking areas. Located on the Bulwell side of Hucknall, the pub is part of the Flaming Grill franchise. 27 THE PILGRIM OAK HUCKNALL Converted from a co-op store in 1998 this Wetherspoons pub was their first to be opened in. PLOUGH & HARROW HUCKNALL Extensively renovated in September 2015 the pub has been opened out, whilst still retaining separate drinking areas. Children are not permitted. 28 GREEN DRAGON HUCKNALL Modernised in 2012 the pub, whilst open plan, is divided into a bar area with pool and darts and a more comfortable drinking/dining area complete with sports TV. An entrance foyer separates the ground floor into two areas. The left is used for dining, the area to the right is used for casual drinking. 29 THE NUTHALL Phoenix This revamped busy dining pub has a large open plan interior separated into discrete dining areas. There is a mix of wooden and flagstone flooring. Contemporary modern decor and subdued lighting make this a popular venue.
