5 Suggested Care and Management 1. These rams and bucks are well developed and with the proper care should do the job for you. 2. Ram lambs and young bucks should not be expected to breed more than 25 females the first year and as they are still growing, should receive grain as well as grass or quality hay. DO NOT OVERWORK RAM LAMBS OR YOUNG BUCKS. 3. Sometimes young rams or bucks will not breed immediately when placed with females for the first time. This problem should correct itself if the ram or buck is left undisturbed with females for two or three weeks. 4. Strange rams or bucks will fight when they first get together. If rams or bucks are kept together, put them in a small pen for a few days. 5. Avoid losing a lamb or kid crop by checking often to see if the ewes or does are settling. 6. Keep the new ram or buck around the barn or in a small lot for a week or so after you get him home. This will allow him rest from the trip and to become accustomed to his new surroundings. General Information 1. MANAGEMENT OF THE RAMS AND BUCKS Participating rams have completed an official 77-day performance test and the Boer-Bucks have completed an official 70-day performance test at the Livestock Evaluation Center on July 8, Prior to the start of both tests, the rams and bucks were allowed a 14-day (rams) and 21-day (bucks) adjustment period during which they were wormed, introduced to our ration and prepared to begin the test. Throughout the performance tests, the rams were self-fed a textured feed consisting of 650 lb. cracked corn, 500 lb. wheat midds, 200 lb. oats, 200 lbs. alfalfa pellets, 150 lbs. Soybean meal, 100 lbs. distiller s grains, 100 lbs. molasses and 100 lbs. vitamins, minerals, salt and ammonium chloride. The bucks were selffed a pelleted ration consisting of 700 lb. cracked corn, 511 lb. wheat midds, 200 lb. oats, 200 lb. alfalfa meal, 148 lb. soybean oilmeal, 100 lb. dry molasses, Deccox (14g/ton), 50 lb. wheat middlings, 20 lb. bentonite, 10 lb. plain salt, 10 lb. ammonium chloride, 50 lb. limestone and vitamins. Rams and bucks received a small amount of grass hay. 2. PERFORMANCE RECORDS An individual performance record exists for each ram and buck cataloged. These records include the following: A. Average Daily Gain - explanation of weight gain during test. B. Weight Per Day of Age - average weight gain per day since birth. C. Loin Area - ultrasonically scanned between the last two ribs, then adjusted to average weight within breed. D. Fat - measured ultrasonically, and to some degree indicates composition of gain. E. Type - all rams scored 12 or higher at delivery time F. Ratios - indicate the percent above or below average a ram or buck is within his own breed group for a particular trait. A ratio of 100 is average. 3. INDEX Ram Index = (.35 x Average daily gain ratio) + (.35 x final weight per day of age ratio) + (.15 x adjusted fat thickness value) + (.15 x adjusted loin muscle area value) Buck Index = (.40 x Average daily gain ratio) + (.20 x final weight per day of age ratio) + (.20 x loin muscle area value adjusted by test goat s breed avg. metabolic weight) + (.20 x hind leg circumference measurement adjusted by test goat s breed avg. metabolic weight) The ram or buck index divided by the average animal index within a breed provides the INDEX RATIO. 4. HEALTH Participating rams and bucks are in perfect health and can go anywhere. All rams and bucks have been examined for reproductive soundness, and all rams have been gene tested for the Scrapie Resistance Gene. Some of the rams have been tested for the Spider Syndrome. All senior rams and senior goats have been semen collected and have passed minimum standards required by the American Society of Theriogenology. 5. NOTE The rams and bucks have been evaluated for performance, but you must evaluate them for type, soundness and breed character. All rams and bucks sell as is.
