4 Suggested Care and Management 1. These rams and bucks are well developed and with the proper care should do the job for you. 2. Ram lambs and young bucks should not be expected to breed more than 25 females the first year and as they are still growing, should receive grain as well as grass or quality hay. DO NOT OVERWORK RAM LAMBS OR YOUNG BUCKS. 3. Sometimes young rams or bucks will not breed immediately when placed with females for the first time. This problem should correct itself if the ram or buck is left undisturbed with females for two or three weeks. 4. Strange rams or bucks will fight when they first get together. If rams or bucks are kept together, put them in a small pen for a few days. 5. Avoid losing a lamb or kid crop by checking often to see if the ewes or does are settling. 6. Keep the new ram or buck around the barn or in a small lot for a week or so after you get him home. This will allow him rest from the trip and to become accustomed to his new surroundings. General Information 1. MANAGEMENT OF THE RAMS AND BUCKS Participating rams have completed an official 77 day performance test and the Boer Bucks have completed an official 70 day performance test at the Livestock Evaluation Center on July 10, Prior to the start of both tests, the rams and bucks were allowed a 14 day adjustment period during which they were wormed, introduced to our ration and prepared to begin the test. Throughout the performance tests, the rams and bucks were self fed a pelleted ration consisting of 700 lb. cracked corn, 511 lb. wheat midds, 200 lb. oats, 200 lb. alfalfa meal, 148 lb. soybean oilmeal, 100 lb. dry molasses, Deccox (14g/ton), 50 lb. wheat middlings, 20 lb. bentonite, 10 lb. plain salt, 10 lb. ammonium chloride, 50 lb. limestone and vitamins, plus a small amount of grass hay. 2. PERFORMANCE RECORDS An individual performance record exists for each ram and buck cataloged. These records include the following: A. Average Daily Gain explanation of weight gain during test. B. Weight Per Day of Age average weight gain per day since birth. C. Loin Area ultrasonically scanned between the last two ribs, then adjusted to average weight within breed. D. Fat measured ultrasonically, and to some degree indicates composition of gain. E. Type all rams scored 12 or higher at delivery time F. Ratios indicate the percent above or below average a ram or buck is within his own breed group for a particular trait. A ratio of 100 is average. 3. INDEX Ram Index = (.35 x Average daily gain ratio) + (.35 x final weight per day of age ratio) + (.15 x adjusted fat thickness value) + (.15 x adjusted loin muscle area value) Buck Index = (.40 x Average daily gain ratio) + (.20 x final weight per day of age ratio) + (.20 x loin muscle area value adjusted by test goat s breed avg. metabolic weight) + (.20 x hind leg circumference measurement adjusted by test goat s breed avg. metabolic weight) The ram or buck index divided by the average animal index within a breed provides the INDEX RATIO.

5 4. HEALTH Participating rams and bucks are in perfect health and can go anywhere. All rams and bucks have been examined for reproductive soundness, and all rams have been gene tested for the Scrapie Resistance Gene. Some of the rams have been tested for the Spider Syndrome. All senior rams and senior goats have been semen collected and have passed minimum standards required by the American Society of Theriogenology. 5. NOTE The rams and bucks have been evaluated for performance, but you must evaluate them for type, soundness and breed character. All rams and bucks sell as is. Terms and Conditions of Sale 1. Terms of the sale are cash or check. Any owner of a ram or buck qualified for sale requesting that payment be made in actual cash rather than by check must first do so in writing to the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Livestock Evaluation Center prior to sale day. This condition will then be announced prior to the sale of that animal. All checks must be made payable to the PSWGA Ram Testing Fund. No ram or buck may leave the premises until properly paid for. 2. Each ram or buck will be sold to the highest bidder. 3. The auctioneer will settle any disputes regarding bids that may arise. This decision will be final. 4. Certificates of registry will be furnished and transfers will be made by the sale Committee, at the seller s expense, to the purchaser within a reasonable time after the sale. Registration certificates for any progeny of these sires is dependent upon the breed association. (i.e. Kids from Percentage Boer Bucks may not have the ability to be registered within certain breed associations). 5. All rams and bucks are at the seller s risk until sold and will be the buyer s risk as soon as sold. However, if not convenient for the buyer to remove the ram or buck the afternoon of the sale, he will be cared for up to a maximum of 72 hours after the sale at the buyer s risk. After 72 hours there will be a nominal fee. 6. Health certificates will be furnished by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. 7. All rams and bucks are guaranteed breeders by the sellers, providing they are properly cared for and not taken on the show circuit prior to being used for breeding. Any ram or buck that settles 1/3 of the healthy females he services will be considered a breeder. In the event a ram or buck is thought to be a non breeder by the buyer, he may be returned to the seller at the buyer s expense within six months of the sale date. In the case of a ram or buck claimed to be a non breeder, the seller is entitled to the period of time, following return of the ram or buck, required to take him through the next regular breeding season, in which to demonstrate that the ram or buck is a breeder. If in that time the ram or buck proves a non breeder, then refunding of the purchase price shall be considered full settlement. Other procedures for settlement may be taken if satisfactory to both the buyer and the seller. 8. The above guarantee and terms of the sale shall constitute a contract between the buyer and the seller for each ram or buck sold and shall be equally binding upon both. Neither the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, the Pennsylvania State University, the Pennsylvania Sheep and Wool Growers Association, nor any other person or organization connected with the management of the sale assumes liability, legal or otherwise, except to help make any needed adjustments. 9. All persons attending the sale do so at their own risk. Neither the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, nor any other person or organization connected with the sale will assume liability, legal or otherwise, for the safety in the buildings, on the premises or behavior of the animals.

6 PA Sheep and Wool Growers Association Since the organization of the Pennsylvania Sheep and Wool Growers Association some 60 or so years ago, it has been and still is an organization of sheep producers working together for the betterment of the sheep and wool industry. The association has worked to increase the awareness about the many benefits of sheep, wool and all of their by products. With a dozen local county/regional member associations/organizations and nearly 120 members across the state, the organization plays a vital role in the success of this industry. The programs and events provided and/or co sponsored by the association, include the Make It With Wool Contest, the State Lamb and Wool Queen s Program, Keystone Stud Ram, Ewe and Meat Goat Sale, Keystone Classic Junior Show, The State Sheep To Shaw Competition, Wool Marketing, Shepherd s Symposium/Annual Meeting, this sale/field day and many others, provide numerous opportunities to showcase and celebrate the prosperity/potential of Pennsylvania s sheep and wool industry. Whether educating the public, encouraging the youth or participating in the agricultural community, the PSWGA characterizes excellence and tradition within the sheep and wool industry.
