Following a visit to a husky farm, there will be a short excursion to Rovaniemi. Before your transfer back to the railway station, we end the day with trip to a reindeer farm, where you will enjoy a Lapland dinner. Open from Dec 20 until about March 31 Arctic SnowHotel is located in Sinettä, about 26 kilometers from Rovaniemi city center. No special equipment is required, other than warm outdoor clothes suited for winter, but we highly recommend to pack long underwear, own hat and wool socks to the bag The temperature in SnowHotel stays always between 0 and 5 ºC, even in extremely cold weather. 7 EXCURSIONS IN ROVANIEMI: EXCURSION TO SANTA CLAUS VILLAGE AND SANTA PARK Every child knows that Santa Claus, or Joulupukki in Finnish, lives right here, in Lapland!!! He can be found in his office every day of the year and YOU can visit him!! Every day a huge number of letters arrive at Santa s Main Post Office. In 1994 Santa received 200,000 letters and just four years later, 800,000 letters! Santa s elves sort all the letters and help Santa to read every single one of them. Then at Christmas or on New Year s Day, under their Christmas tree, excited children all over the world delight in finding the exact toy or game they have for from asked Santa Claus!!! Santa Claus Village is the most magical place all year round, for both children and adults alike!! There is something for everyone here. After posting letters at Santa's Post Office, you can buy gifts and souvenirs. In winter you can experience the excitement of a short safari in a sleigh pulled by reindeer or huskies, ride a sledge downhill and taste hot glöggi (mulled wine) in the Ice Bar. Of course, you will meet Santa Claus and share with him your dreams and wishes. There are so many things to do! Don't forget to cross the Arctic Circle! Take a photograph of this important event and remember to get your certificate to prove it!! Our tour continues at Santa Park - a unique, themed amusement complex built in a cave deep inside the Syvasenvaara fell and opened to the public at Christmas Enjoy theatrical performances, games, exhibitions and souvenir shops. 8 THE MOST NORTHERNMOST ZOO IN THE WORLD RANUA The zoo is approximately 1 hour south of Rovaniemi by car. Upon arrival, you will take a stroll through the zoo, where you can see the interesting animals and birds that live at the "top of the world!!". You will be able to dine in the cozy restaurant, visit all kinds of souvenir shops including the Fazer candy/chocolate shop and the wine shop, where they sell unique wines made from wild berries found locally, such as cloudberries, lingonberries and bilberries. ~ 5 hours Transfer, guiding service, entrance fee to zoo, lunch and/or free time. REINDEER ANTLER SECRETS Reindeer antlers have long been a raw material for the indigenous peoples of Lapland, both for tools and decorative items. The reindeer naturally shed their antlers every year, thereby providing a ready source of this raw material. You will learn about the long established traditions, as well as reindeer antler working in general. 9 ARCTCIC SNOW HOTEL The Arctic Snow Hotel is approximately a 30 minute drive from Rovaniemi and has accommodation for 70 guests. The spectacular building is constructed with a different appearance every year and every single one of the unique bedrooms features ice sculptures and illuminated artwork. The room temperature is usually between 0 C and 5 C, but you will stay cozy and comfortable using the high quality sleeping bags and incredibly warm reindeer fur. 10 POLAR EXPLORER ICEBREAKER JOIN US FOR A ONCE IN A LIFE TIME EXPERIENCE Imagine a white frozen sea that never storms. Sea water covered in solid ice, endless, dramatic white, as far as the eye can see. Listen to the sound of crackling ice, crushed ice blocks rise from the icebreaker s hull, dark water splashes out. In the beginning of winter, the ice is no more than cm thick, but by April it could reach up to 2 m. During the 3 h cruise you will be shown all the way down to the engine rooms and all way up to Captain s bridge. You can relax the cozy saloon, enjoying warm juice, or go for walk on the frozen sea. The icebreaker makes a pool free of ice and every visitor can take a swim in the dark icy water, in floatation survival suit. 11 ICE WATERFALL KOROUOMA Korouoma is a 30 kilometer long geological fracture valley in Posio. It is a part of a fracture zone in the bedrock, which is hundreds of millions of years old. At the center of Korouoma the fracture valley forms a gorge with high cliff faces. Small streams which cascade down the cliff faces in the summer, freeze into beautiful frozen waterfalls during winter, making Korouoma the number one ice climbing destination in Finland. ~ 5-6 hours Transfer, guiding service, sausages on open fire and hot tee or coffee The walking path to waterfall is approximately 1, 5 km AMETHYST MINE The Lampivaara Amethyst Mine is a fascinating travel destination all year round. The amethysts of Lampivaara fell were born million years ago, deep in the bowels of the ancient mountains. The amethyst mine is open every day between June and September, in October and in Winter it is open from Tuesday to Saturday. During the guided tour you will learn about the geology that created the amethyst, their properties, the history of the mine and some of the uses of amethyst. After the tour, each visitor will be able to try their hand at digging for their own personal lucky amethyst! At the end of the visit there will be some time to drop by the small Amethyst Shop on site, where amethyst from the area in the form of jewellery and other decorative items is for sale. ~ 5-6 hours Transfer, guiding service, excursion to mine (walking in the summer, travelling by Pendolino in winter), berry juice upon arrival, presentation of amethyst and digging your for own amethyst stone. Sitting by the fire while cooking sausages you can search for the Northern Lights. 13 SECRETS OF THE SNOW QUEEN The search for Kay will lead you to the chamber of Snow Queen. The evil queen does not want to release Kay and tries to trick and imprison uninvited guests. However, the quick wits and friendly participation of all your group will help to defeat her spells. FAIRYTALE ADVANTURES IN TROLL FOREST You will journey to the woods, where the Trolls have lived since ancient times. Their cave is on the top of the hill, but to get there, you will have to pass the Troll's tests! When the tasks are completed, a warm reception with a family of trolls is awaiting you. Through storytelling, you will learn about their lives and history. 14 REINDEERS SAFARIS EXCURSION TO REINDEERS FARM The reindeer invite you to visit them!! Following a detailed introduction to reindeer life, you will have a unique opportunity to pass a test and obtain your special reindeer sleigh "driving licence" without any age restrictions. Take a seat in the sleigh and you are off! Getting cold? Warm yourself up next to the open fire in the hut and enjoy a cup of hot juice. In this traditional Lapland hut you will be baptized in the ways of the North. This event must be celebrated, so a national supper awaits all newly-made Lapps! 15 HUSKY SAFARIS EXCURSION TO THE HUSKY FARM The professional dog breeders will introduce you to the life of a Husky on the farm. You can pass a brief course to become a "junior dog breeder" and after that you will leave on a safari (5 or 6 km) on dog sleds that hold 1-3 people (one driving, 1-2 passengers). You will have the opportunity to rest, take photographs and take turns at driving the sled!! ~ 1,5-2 hours Transfer, excursion on the farm, instruction of driving, driving 5 or 6 km, hot juice CALL OF THE WILD HUSKY Get away from the city and enjoy the magical forests of the Lapland wilderness while driving your own dog-team! 16 WILD OVERNIGHT HUSKY TOUR Every Saturday from the middle of January we hook up our dogs and go for an exhilarating trek to a beautiful wilderness cabin in the silent Lapland forest. Please feel free to join us!! All you need is a sense of adventure and a willingness to participate!! Highlights Spend the night in an authentic wilderness cabin Drive your own husky team Experienced guides Maximum 10 persons per tour Traditional wood heated Finnish sauna PROGRAMME The programme gives a good insight into the landscape of Lapland and a lot of information on the lives of huskies. During this tour customers will be expected to help with the daily management of the dogs, and the chores related to staying in the cabins. The tour is suited for participants of a normal physical condition Saturday. Husky tour to the wilderness cabin: We pick you up from your hotel in Rovaniemi in the morning. After a transfer of about 45 minutes we arrive at the kennel and meet the dogs. We pack our sleds, hook up our dogs and set out for an exciting days travel. Lunch is eaten around a campfire in the middle of the Lapland wilderness. In the afternoon we will arrive at the cabin, allow the dogs to rest and sit down for a well-earned cup of coffee and some cake. Before dinner there is the possibility to enjoy a refreshing sauna. Sunday. After breakfast we prepare our dog-teams and prepare to leave the cabin. We travel for most of the day through the beautiful scenery of Lapland. Lunch is again eaten around a campfire. In the evening we return to the kennel, return our dogs to their places for a well-deserved rest, and say our farewells. A minibus will take you back to your hotel Wilderness cabins The accommodation for this tour is a cozy wilderness cabin. They are all heated with wood stoves and fireplaces, have an outside toilet and a wood heated sauna for washing and refreshing in. The cabins have no running water - just like it's always been!!! 17 SNOWMOBILE SAFARIS SAFARI 2 HOURS On the snowmobile adventure, you have the fantastic opportunity to experience the unique countryside of the North. The frozen river acts as a snowmobile route made by Mother Nature. A hot drink served in silent forest a great time to take some photos ~ 2,5 hours All equipment, driving instruction, driving ~ 20 km, guiding service. NIGHT SAFARI (SEARCH FOR THE NORTHERN LIGHTS) 3 HOURS An opportunity to drive a snowmobile through snowy forest and along the river in the shadows of the evening. During the safari, you can admire the starry night, the moon and if you are lucky you will see the Aurora Borealis. The guide will light up a bonfire and we will enjoy a picnic while waiting for the Northern Lights to appear. Everyone can grill traditional Finnish sausages on the fire and we serve Lappish berry juice to keep yourself warm. For taking proper photos in darkness, you can bring along the tripod for your camera ~ 3,5 hours All equipment, driving instruction, driving ~ km, guiding service, grilled sausages on open fire FAMILY SAFARI You will enjoy the beautiful wintery scenery, during the way we will make several stops to admire snowy nature. After adult-snowmobiling, it is time for children to have more fun. We stop at the special area, where is safe for children to ride on their own on the mini-snowmobile. Self ride is suitable for children up to years, smaller kids will be helped by the parent or guide. 18 ADRENALIN SAFARI This snowmobile safari will give you a chance to ride your own snowmobile on wild forest around the Santa Claus Village area. We will take you off from the crowded trails and have some fun with the sporty snowmobiles. Group size is maximum 8 people, single driving for adults only, no passengers. The driver of a snowmobile has to be at least 15 years old and hold a valid driver license A1, T, A or B category. ~ 2 hours All equipment, driving instruction, driving ~ 30 km, guiding service. SNOWMOBILE SAFARI TO REINDEERS FARM Drive on a snowy river as quick as the wind to the reindeer farm, which is situated on the riverbank. You will be given a cordial welcome from the owner of the farm. He will tell you everything about the life on a farm and everything you need to know about the reindeer. After a quick briefing on how to handle the reindeer sled, you can ride in the real sled by yourself. After the ride hot tea and cookies await you. During the safari you will get to know the life of the dogs, pass a brief course on handling a dog sled and ride a kilometer long track on your own. After the ride hot tea and cookies await you. 19 SNOWSHOEING SAFARI Snowshoeing is a great way to experience Lapland wintry wildernesses, enjoy the fresh and clean air and get some exercise. People in the Arctic areas have been using snowshoes already for centuries, they were intended to assist people in travelling the snowy landscapes. ~ 2,5 hours All equipment, driving instruction, distance ~1,5-3 km, guiding service. ICE FISHING There is nothing better than to drive through the wild forest to a real polar lake. Here, with the instructor s assistance, you will make holes in the ice with an auger. You have to have patience, skill and some luck to catch a fish! The catch is counted and photographs taken for souvenirs. 20 TRADITIONAL WOOD FIRED SAUNA It's the one Finnish innovation that the whole world has heard of. And now it's your chance to experience this uniquely Finnish activity! Enjoy spending time with your family and friends, as the heat of the sauna eases tired muscles and cleanses your skin. When spending time in a sauna, you should always listen to your body and do as you feel best. There is no such thing as "the right way" to bathe in the sauna, so don't be scared!! For the first time you could stay in for just a few minutes, depending on the temperature.
