A Church in a Big Rock Welcome to Helsinki - the coldest capital city in the world! Although, actually the weather this late 1: morning is quite hot, as the breeze from the Gulf of Finland is helping to cool ENW down. It is our first day of two in the 2: capital and our first location is something a little bit different - a church built into solid rock! Temppeliaukio Church is one of Helsinki s most popular attractions and every day thousands of people visit the church to 3: its unique design. Constructed into solid rock the church was designed by two Finnish brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen, can hold up to 750 worshippers and was first opened in The church was 4: by one of the receptionists at our hotel as it is about a 10 minute walk from where ENW is staying. As it is Sunday, ENW had to wait outside for the morning services to finish, but now that it is after 12pm we can enter the church. Inside it is truly 5: as we look up we can see central copper dome that resembles a UFO from SciFi movies! Amazing coloured shadows are cast across the floors and walls and it really is a 6: wonder! The insurance building was first opened in 1901 and was designed by Finnish writer Eliel Saarinen. The term pohjola refers to a mythical land from the Finnish story the Kalevala which tells of a time when northern Finland was ruled by an evil witch. So when the building was being designed for the Pohjola Insurance Company they agreed to adorn the inside of their headquarters with statues of monsters, goblins, fools, gnomes, witches and animals! ENW has sneaked inside the building, but amazingly from the inside it just looks like any other office building in the world. One Fortress - Three Countries! (A) Why has ENW come to this small island just outside the entrance to Helsinki Port? (B) Good morning and you join ENW just after we have alighted from the water bus that has taken us from the mainland on a short 20 minute ride to the small island of Suomenlinna. (C) Well aside from being one of Finalnd s 13 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the island is also home to a fort that during its history has been under the command of three different countries. (A) It was only after the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the brief 3 month Finnish Civil War, that the fortress finally came under Finnish control years after it was first built! (B) Between 1808 to 1917 the fort was under control of the Russian Imperial Navy who extended the barricades, increased the size of the barracks and built a higher, longer outside wall. (C) Suomenlinna Fort was first built in 1748 when Finland was part of the Swedish Empire under King Charles XIV John. (A) The total distance if the defensive walls are 6 km and ENW is about to set off with our camera to walk the entire fortification. (B) After that we will return to Helsinki to visit a hotel that ENW is not staying in (C) The Finnish military controlled the fortifications until the 1960s, but since then the surrounding island has become home to around 800 residents and a workplace for 400 people. P 1: P 2: P 3: Q & A 1 How long was the fort under foreign control? 2 How many UNESCO WHS does Finland have? 3 How long are the fortification walls? 4 What decade was the fort turned over to civilian control? 5 Who was the Swedish monarch when the fort was built?

7 [6] Part 3 Reading & Listening 4 ENW 350 Location 4 Hotel Torni Deck Read the title for the 4th part of this special Helsinki podcast! Next read the three statements below. What do you think is the answer? If you are not sure - GUESS! Choose YES' or NO! A: The Hotel Solo Sokos Torni is located south of the central station. B: From 1976 to 2011 the hotel was the tallest building in Finland. C: The bar at the top of the hotel has a glass floor. Location 4 Which Word? Read / Listen to Location 4 Read the 7 words in the box and then put them in the correct place. 1 firm 2 ordered 3 Ateljee 4 Moscow 5 facilities 6 simple 7 evening The Best View in Town! It is our final A: in Helsinki and so ENW is going to meet a friend a hotel located just 700 metres south of Helsinki s Central Station. The hotel is not the one ENW is staying in, nor their friend, so why have going to meet up and have a drink there? The answer is B: - because the top floor hotel bar has the best view of Helsinki of any building in the city! The Hotel Solo Sokos Torni was built in 1931 and from then until 1976 it was the tallest building in the city! It was designed by the architect C: of Jung and Jung in 1928 and consists of 14 floors - the very top floor is where ENW will soon be heading as we are going to the D: Bar. Another interesting facet to the bar are the toilets, which have scenic glass walls that allow patrons to look down at the city whilst using the E:! ENW is now sitting across from our friend, who although originally from the US has like ENW been living in Japan for quite a while. We have F: our drinks, and tried not to look too shocked when we were quoted the prices! Helsinki, indeed Finland, is not the cheapest place to visit and when a cocktail costing ENW will be sticking to just the one G: Mule! However the view is stunning and is worth the 14 floors, strange toilets and expensive drinks! Q & A 1 How much did ENWs drink cost? 2 What is the hotel s full name? 3 How far from the Central Station is the hotel? 4 Which country is ENW living in? 5 How many floors does the hotel have?

8 [7] Part 4 Post Listening / Reading ENW 350 Writing Which One? Writing Which as your favourite Helsinki location? Write as many reasons! Research the city and find TWO more locations you would like to visit. Write about your choices and explain why you chose them! And finally Did you Know..? (U) The pool caters for both beginners and those canines who are more comfortable in the water. (V) This is much more expensive than a human swimming lesson that costs only 5 Euros. (W) The dog swimming service became so popular that all the tickets were sold out prior to the first lesson! (X) Swimming lessons for puppies are the most popular, although lessons are not cheap - a 30 minute lesson costs between 18 to 30 Euros deepening on the size of the dog. (Y) The ENW dog, a 13-year old black Labrador is actually frightened of water - so at least it would save us the 30 Euros needed for his swimming lesson! (Z) That in 2012 a special dog swimming pool opened in the Finnish capital of Helsinki.
