This 20th Century construction was one of 12 gates that formed part of the ancient city wall of Valencia. The Gate is one of the last remnants of the city wall that was pulled down in 1865 by the Paris provincial governor. Since the gate was completed in March 1398 it has also been used as a prison, a place for local ceremonies and as a gaol. Additionally, during the Spanish Civil War in December 1936 precious and priceless artefacts from the Prado Museum in Rome were also hidden in the lower floors of the Serranos Gate. It should have taken only 10 minutes to reach the Serranos Gate, but unfortunately ENW got a little lost and so after 25 hours of wandering we have arrived. We have paid our 2, climbed to the parapets of the tower and am now looking over the city of Valencia. It is a cloudless morning and the view is fantastic from the top. (a) There are many legends, stories, songs, books, poems and movies about the Holy Grail and several churches around the world claim to own the authentic one. (b) ENW has never seen any of the Holy Grail candidates and so this is why we have wandered for 30 minutes into the very heart of the city to the Place de l Almoina or Alms Square in English. (c) The Holy Grail is the name of the cup that was supposed to have been used by Jesus Christ during the Last Supper before he died. (a) The chalice was originally presented to the cathedral by King Alfonso V of Aragon in (b) ENW now needs to stop talking as we are about to enter the small chapel that hosts the cup and there are 20 people praying in front of it. Sadly, ENW will not have time to visit everything in this 3: modern attraction that first opened in 1998 with the opening of the L Hemisferic - which houses the cinema and planetarium. And this is where we will be heading this afternoon to the hugely 4: building which is designed in the shape of an eye-lid. Surrounding the building is a water pool with a glass bottom that gives an 5: illusion of an half-opened eye! ENW has wandered into the main entrance, queued up for 20 minutes and paid 8.80 for our ticket. Actually this is not the last location ENW will visit in Valencia, tonight we are going to the Mestalla Stadium and watch Valencia CF play in the Spanish League! Q & A 1 How long did ENW queue up for? 2 How much was the ticket for L Hemisferic? 3 What is the name of Valencia FCs stadium? 4 What is the building in the shape of? 5 How many venues are inside the complex?
8 [7] Part 4 Post Listening / Reading ENW 284 Writing Which is Best? Writing Which as your favourite Valencia location? Why? Write as many reasons! Research Valencia and find TWO more locations you would like to visit. Write about your choices and explain why you chose them! And finally Did you Know..? That the name of Valencia derives from the name of the city given to it when it was under x: occupation. Then the city was called Valentia which in English means strength or valour. However, between 711 and 1238 the city was under the control of the Moors and for four hundred years was an Islamic city. During that period Valencia was called Medina bu-tarab or City of Joy in English. In 1228 King James I of Aragon conquered the city, returned the y: faith and created the Kingdom of Valencia which endured until Today the city is home to 815,000 people and is the 3rd largest in Spain behind Madrid and Barcelona. It is also the biggest port on the Mediterranean z: coast and handles 20% of all of Spain s exports including of course - oranges!
