4 HISTORY & HERITAGE The Wort Hotel is a landmark on the National Register of Historic Places and an icon of Jackson Hole, whose beginning is owed to Charles Wort, a homesteader in the late 1800s. He did not live long enough to see his dream of a luxury hotel come to true but his sons, John and Jess, fulfilled the dream and in September of 1941, The Wort Hotel opened its doors. In 1950 The Silver Dollar Bar was established with its serpentine bar famous for the 2,032 inlaid Morgan silver dollars. Although gambling has always been illegal in Wyoming, it was tolerated for years as a tourist amusement. Eventually outside pressure pushed the gambling to the basement creating legendary tales of escape tunnels and raids. Tragically, on the afternoon of August 5, 1980, The Wort caught fire, the cause most likely an osprey nest on the neon sign. In June 1981, The Wort reopened its doors to a grateful town and huge party. The Memorial Weekend event was so beloved that it became an annual celebration called Old West Days. On the walls throughout the hotel are historical photographs documenting over 75 years as the hub of Jackson s community. COWBOY SUITE Two-room suite: Cowboy motif, parlor with wet bar, large desk, sitting area, overstuffed leather couches, queen bed in addition to king bed and a second full bath. GRAND TETON SUITE Two-room suite: Murals of the Grand Teton Mountain Range, handcrafted beds and furnishings, wet bar, leather chairs and desk. JUNIOR KING SUITES One-room suite: Custom king bed, spacious sitting area, oversized sofa, extravagant handmade wet bar. GRAND ROOMS Available with two queen beds or one king bed feature a sitting area with couch and easy chairs. 9 SILVER DOLLAR BAR, GRILL & SHOWROOM Take a step back in time in the famous Silver Dollar Bar. The bar s surface, with its inlaid 2,032 uncirculated 1921 Morgan silver dollars, reflects the colorful history of Jackson Hole. For more than 50 years, it s been the favorite meeting place for locals, cowboys, ski bums, politicians, old-timers, and visitors alike. Just through the swinging doors is the elegant Silver Dollar Grill, a quiet area serving breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. Our Executive Chef creates only the finest sophisticated mountain cuisine with regional game and locally farmed vegetables. 14 ACTIVITIES Located within the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, Jackson Hole offers seasonal activities that are almost limitless and draw thousands of visitors each year. Jackson Hole is the geographical area that encompasses the Grand Teton National Park, the town of Jackson and several other small towns. The close proximity of The Wort Hotel to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks makes it the perfect base for your visit. Summer is the most popular time to visit Jackson Hole with its endless hiking and biking trails, white water and scenic rafting, fishing and golfing, wildlife scenic safaris and so much more. The most well-known activity in winter is the world-famous skiing at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.
