10 Sheep and Goat Pox in Greece - SCoFCAH, Brussels 3-4 July 2014 MEASURES IN PLACE Sheep and Goat Pox Measures: current situation Measures lifted in the protection surveillance zones of most outbreaks (measures of Dir. 92/119, in most cases extended well beyond the minimum 21 days described therein). Additional restrictive measures within affected prefectures [ e.g. prohibition of slaughter of sheep/goats originating from the zones (protection +surveillance zones) ] also lifted in most cases. In some cases provisions to allow entry for slaughter of sheep-goats originating from non-affected prefectures. However measures applied to prevent spread of the disease from the other affected prefectures (Evros, Thessaloniki, Xanthi, Rodopi, Pieria) still in place (exit of live animals of susceptible species as well as other feed /fodder or other non edible material that could potentially transmit SGP is strictly prohibited). Measures applied since April 2014: A partial lift in the ban of exit of live animals from the affected prefectures to allow exit of live sheep goats for slaughter in other prefectures. Restrictions still in place for breeding-fattening animals (gradually being lifted from areas where no new outbreaks occurred).

12 Conclusions Sheep and Goat Pox : Some Preliminary Conclusions Bearing in mind historical data, entry of Sheep Pox Disease in the country seems to follow specific pathways. Measures implemented so far had to be extended beyond the minimum measures described in Dir 92/119 (both temporal as well as geographical expansion) in order to stop spread of the disease. Protection and surveillance zones around outbreaks were kept in place for much more than 21 days as an extra precautionary measure. Protective measures were applied not only for the protection /surveillance zones but also for the entire area of the affected prefectures (or other relevant administrative division) in order to prevent spread to the rest of the country. Essential pieces of scientific information regarding the nature of the disease are missing or unclear (e.g. maximum survival time of the virus in various materials/conditions, potential of disease transmission through indirect means, other possible means of spread e.t.c.).
