3 Kick-off Meeting Summary Report Crete Center for Quantum Complexity and Nanotechnology (QCN) The Kick-off Meeting of the QCN Center (of the Department of Physics of the University of Crete) took place on September 5-7, 2013, at the premises of the Department of Physics, in Heraklion, Crete, Greece. The list of participants and the meeting s detailed program are presented in separate documents. The meeting s activities fulfilled a threefold objective, namely: a) The announcement (and dissemination), in a formal manner, of the formation (and the launch) of the Center for Quantum Complexity and Nanotechnology in the research and academic communities and in the regional authorities and actors. b) The provision of an important scientific exchange in the Center s research areas, with the gathering of high-caliber researchers from the QCN Center s partnerorganizations (namely, from 9 research institutions and universities), who presented their research work and interacted with the Center s scientists and researchers, the academic and research community of the region (U. Crete, FORTH) and the regional actors at large (Region of Crete, Regional Innovation Council of Crete). c) The provision of an important administrative exchange between the REGPOT Programme Coordinator official and the persons in charge of the QCN Center, elucidating significant issues and clarifying administrative items (which is of particular importance in setting-up the managerial structures in a proper and efficient way, at the very beginning of the project), and also presenting the coming European Initiatives in the European Research Area. The QCN Center is funded by means of a competitive grant from the European Commission (more precisely: it is partially supported by the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme [FP7-REGPOT ] under grant agreement n ) with the support of the. It comprises a research entity constituted by theorists and experimentalists, who focus on the broad area of Condensed Matter Physics, with particular emphasis in topics such as superconductivity, magnetics, graphene, metamaterials, complex systems, biological physics, field theory, nanotechnology and nanofabrication, etc. From a human capital development perspective, the QCN Center sponsors a strong visitors program, organizes international conferences and employs a large number of postdoctoral associates who will collaborate with faculty members of the Department of Physics as well as participating researchers from the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser of FORTH and other Departments. The kick-off meeting started on Thursday, September 5, with a welcome speech and an introductory presentation (QCN-at-a-Glance) by Prof. G. P. Tsironis, who is the QCN Center s Coordinator, followed by Dr. G. Ambroziewicz s presentation on key issues related to the
4 FP7 project management (Prof. Ambroziewicz is the REGPOT Programme Coordinator). The U. Crete authorities (president, vice rector) and the representatives of the regional authorities (General Secretary of the Decentralized Administration of Crete, representative of the Governor of the Region of Crete) gave welcome messages and speeches and expressed their support for the Center. Prof. S. Anastasiadis, from the U. Crete and FORTH presented the research work currently taking place at FORTH (Foundation of Research and Technology Hellas). His talk was followed by the talk of the Greek national representative to the Enterprise Europe Network HELLAS, Ms G. Tzenou, who is with the Greek National Documentation Center, presenting aspects of the REGPOT Programme focusing on outcomes and statistics and research and development in Crete. Then, Prof. E. Economou (U. Crete, FORTH, and President of Regional Innovation Council of Crete) spoke on Horizon 2020, smart specialization and the knowledge sector in Crete. The first day s presentations were concluded by the talk of Mr. G. Alexakis (member of the Regional Council of Crete) on Crete 2020: development strategy & smart specialization. Afterwards, the meeting s participants enjoyed a buffet dinner, discussing, interacting, and networking with each other. The presentations of the second day (Friday, September 6) commenced with a welcome address by Prof. G. Tsironis, followed the talks of the representatives of the Center s partner organizations. The first session comprised the talk on the strange metals of holography and experiment by Prof. J. Zaanen of the U. Leiden, followed by the talk of Prof. A. Donos of the U. Cambridge. After a short break, Prof. O. Cohen (of the Institute of Solid State Physics at Technion) presented his talk on spin angular momentum in extreme nonlinear optics: high harmonic generation with controlled polarization, followed by a review of research at ENS (Paris) by Prof. C. Bachas (Ecole Normale Superieure). The talks commenced after the lunch break by Prof. S. Saxena (Cavendish Laboratory, U. Cambridge) presenting quantum criticality and superconductivity in spin and charge systems, followed by Prof. P. H. M. van Loosdrecht (U. Cologne) speaking on dynamic heat transport in low dimensional quantum magnets. After a short break, Dr. M. Weides (Physics Institute, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) spoke on superconducting quantum bits and Dr. D. Deligeorgis (CNRS-LAAS) spoke on flatland ballistic electronics. The activities of the day were concluded in the Students Center, where Prof. T. Geisel (MPI Goettingen) gave a public talk on the beat generation and its perception, focusing on human v. machine generated beats, analyzing the statistics (power laws), presenting acoustic examples of white noise, 1/f noise, and 1/f 2 noise, accompanied live by the String Quartet of the Municipality of Heraklion (the event was streamed live to teachers and students via the EC-funded Open Discovery Space project). The meeting s speakers and the Center s researchers had dinner together, discussing, socializing, and networking. The presentations of the third (last) day (Saturday, September 7) commenced with Prof. G. Kalosakas (U. Patras) presenting simulations in grapheme, followed by Prof. E. Kiritsis (U.
5 Crete) talk on field theory in condensed matter physics, Prof. X. Zotos (U. Crete) talk on magnetic transport in 1D materials, Prof. G. Tsironis (U. Crete) talk on physics research in Crete, and Dr. G. Ambroziewicz s (REGPOT Programme Coordinator) talk on HORIZON 2020 EU Research Programme. The final talk of the meeting was a cultural one: Dr. G. Owen (TEI of Crete) presented the Minoan Scripts from Mythology to History. Participants had lunch together and later went to the Archeological Museum of Crete to listen to a lively exposition of the ancient monuments exhibited there by Dr. G. Owen. Placing its kick-off meeting, strategically, at the very first week of the project s lifetime, the QCN Center fulfilled a threefold objective. It announced the Center s launch to the research and academic communities and to the regional authorities and actors. It provided an important scientific exchange in the Center s research areas, with the gathering of highcaliber researchers, from 9 European institutions partnering the Center (universities, research centers), who presented their research work and discussed/interacted/socialized/networked with the Center s scientists and researchers, thus forging strong ties. It also provided an important administrative exchange between the REGPOT Programme Coordinator and the persons in charge of the QCN Center, elucidating significant issues and clarifying administrative items. For example, following the advice of Dr. Ambroziewicz, the QCN Center will employ (starting immediately) a project manager to assist the Center s coordinator with the non-research managerial issues and processes. The program of the Kick-off meeting and the List of Participants are presented in the following pages.
