4 4 France Crème de la Crème Welcome to France France is one of the world s most popular tourist destinations offering an abundance of culture and scenery. Paris, Avignon, Provence, Lyon, Beaune, Loire Valley to name a few are steeped in history and offer their unique atmosphere and charm. Dordogne is located in the region of Aquitaine, between the Loire valley and the High Pyrénées named after the great river Dordogne that runs through it. Welcome to france Find experiences to soothe the soul ATOUT France Paris is one of the most fascinating cities in Europe, and tourists to this wonderful city will find that things to see and do are almost limitless. Known as the City of Light, the beauty of Paris is overwhelming and architectural and artistic heritage combine to make any visit an unforgettable experience. The city of Paris got its name from the Parisii, a tribe of Gauls who settled on the Ile de la Cité between 250 and 200 B.C. Disneyland Paris is a holiday and recreation resort in Marne-la-Vallée. The complex is located 32 kilometers (20 mi) from the centre of Paris. Disneyland Paris comprises two theme parks, a retail, dining and entertainment district, and seven Disney-owned hotels. In August 2008, Disneyland Paris was the most visited attraction in Europe, receiving more visitors than the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower combined. ATOUT France AVIGNON Named the City of the Popes or Altera Roma, Avignon retains the indelible mark of the Popes stay in the city, which was for a while the capital of the Medieval western world. Today, it is a prestigious cultural capital with its world-renowned Theatre Festival. The Historic Centre of Avignon: Papal Palace, Episcopal Ensemble and Avignon Bridge was made a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995 Côte-d Or Tourisme BEAUNE In the middle of the Côte d Or, Beaune is the capital of the wine region. The town has a majesty about it rather like one of the good vintages it is famed for. At its centre is the Hôtel Dieu, the Hospices de Beaune, with its inner courtyard and colourful tiled roof. Radiating out are the cobbled streets with boutiques of all kinds from wine and food to avantgarde fashion. ATOUT France Bordeaux Considered the world s wine capital, Bordeaux started out as a Roman trading post, and passed into the hands of the English who owned it for some 300 years. Many of the grand chateaux in and around the city are still in English hands and many are open to tourists. Bordeaux acts as a central transport hub useful for accessing France s famous winegrowing region ATOUT France Burgundy Burgundy, or Bourgogne as it is known in Europe is the land where food and wine is an art form. Enjoy leisurely lunches and dinners, visit some of the beautiful & historic abbeys and châteaux, walk or drive around this unspoilt countryside. The roads are uncluttered and the pace of life meanders along. The local people are hospitable and you will find that it is a perfect place to explore. ATOUT France Champagne Champagne is a historic province in the northeast of France, best known for the production of the sparkling white wine that bears the region s name. The area is about 160 km east of Paris. There are five departments within the region: Aisne, Aube, Haute-Marne, Marne, and Seine-et-Marne. Churches owned vineyards and monks produced wine for use in the sacrament of Eucharist. French kings were traditionally anointed in Reims and champagne wine was served as part of coronation festivities. In 1114, William of Champeaux, bishop Châlons-en-Champagne, issued the Grande charte champenoise which defined the viticultural possessions of the Abbey of Saint-Pierre-aux-Monts, thus giving rise to the modern Champagne wine region. French Riviera The Côte d Azur, often known in English as the French Riviera, is the Mediterranean coastline of the south eastern corner of France, extending from Menton near the Italian border in the east to either Hyères or Cassis in the west. This coastline was one of the first modern resort areas. It began as a winter health resort for the British upper class at the end of the 18 th century. With the arrival of the railway in the mid-19 th century, it became the playground and vacation spot of aristocrats, such as Queen Victoria and King Edward VII, when he was Prince of Wales. In the first half of the 20th century it was frequented by artists and writers, including Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Aldous Huxley, as well as wealthy Americans and Europeans. ATOUT France LOIRE VALLEY Loire Valley (French: Vallée de la Loire) is known as the Garden of France and the Cradle of the French Language. It is also noteworthy for the quality of its architectural heritage, in its historic towns such as Amboise, Angers, Blois, Chinon, Nantes, Orléans, Saumur, and Tours, but in particular for its world-famous castles, such as the Châteaux d Amboise, Château de Chambord, Château de Villandry and Chenonceau and more particularly its many cultural monuments, which illustrate to an exceptional degree the ideals of the Renaissance and the Age of the Enlightenment on western European thought and design

5 5 Left Lavender Fields in Provence; Right: View of Nice ATOUT France Welcome to France Welcome to france Find experiences to soothe the soul Sanctuaires ND Lourdes Lourdes Lourdes is a small market town lying in the foothills of the Pyrenees, famous for the Marian apparitions of Our Lady of Lourdes that are reported to have occurred in 1858 to Bernadette Soubirous. At that time, the most prominent feature of the town was the fortified castle that rises up from a rocky escarpment at its centre. LYON ATOUT France Lyon was first named Lugdunum meaning the hill of lights or the hill of crows. Lug was equated by the Romans to Mercury. Lyon is a major centre of business with a reputation as the French capital of gastronomy and having a significant role in the history of cinema due to Auguste and Louis Lumière. The city is known for its historical and architectural landmarks and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lyon was historically known as the silk capital of the world. Normandy landings The Normandy Landings were the landing operations of the Allied invasion of Normandy, during World War II. The landings commenced on 6 June 1944 (D-Day). The landings took place along a 50-mile (80 km) stretch of the Normandy coast divided into five sectors: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. The beaches at Normandy are still referred to on maps and signposts by their invasion codenames. There are several vast cemeteries in the area. NICE With an international airport and the fast train from Paris, Nice is the first experience of the renowned Côte d Azur for many tourists. The city was established by the Greeks and named for Nike, goddess of victory, but the Romans started the tourism industry here when they popularised their mineral baths on Cimiez. In spite of modernization, the city retains its medieval heritage in the atmospheric Vieille Ville (old town), with its closely packed red-tiled roofs and narrow winding streets packed with shops, bars and fabulous restaurants. Next door, the famous Cours Saleya flower and food market has scores of stands, from large, professionally displayed wares to folding tables set up by family farmers with their produce directly from the farm. Provence No other region of France stimulates the senses as strongly as Provence. The soft light and its vivid landscape of pastel colours have inspired writers and artists like Van Gogh and Picasso. The countryside redolent with wild herbs is scattered with historic fortified medieval towns such as Avignon and Aix-en-Provence and the ancient Roman towns like Orange and Arles with their great monuments, arches and coliseums. St Malo City of Pirates Walled and built with the same grey granite stone as Mont St- Michel, St. Malo was originally a fortified island at the mouth of the Rance, controlling not only the estuary but the open sea beyond. In later centuries it became notorious as the home of a fierce breed of pirate-mariners, who were never quite under anybody s control but their own. The corsaires of St-Malo not only forced English ships passing up the Channel to pay tribute, but also brought wealth from further afield. Now inseparably attached to the mainland, St-Malo is the most visited place in Brittany, thanks more to its superb old citadelle. From outside the walls, the dignified ensemble of the old city might seem stern and forbidding, but passing through into the streets within the walls brings you into a busy, lively town full of character. WORLD WAR I battles For Australia, as for many nations, the First World War remains the most costly conflict in terms of deaths and casualties. From a population of fewer than five million, 416,809 men enlisted, of which over 60,000 were killed and 156,000 wounded, gassed, or taken prisoner. On April 25, 1915 Australian troops landed at Gallipoli where they faced the most serious casualties. After escaping the horrors of Gallipoli, the Anzac troops were redeployed to France to fight the Germans. By July 1916 there were more than 90,000 Australians on the Western Front, another 90,000 training in England. There are thousands of Australian and other international war dead buried in memorials scattered all over the Western Front, today France, Germany and Belgium. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them. Lest we Forget
