1 In 2019 ORLÉANS celebrates 500 years of te Renaissance Events, activities, exibitions, worksops, tours, etc. Discover te programme!

2 EDITORIAL In 2019 we are celebrating 500 years of te Renaissance in Orléans and trougout te Loire Valley, a cultural event sowcasing our regional capital and its ric istory. At te time, Orléans, a former royal city, was a bustling and prosperous town tanks to te River Loire and its proximity to Paris. Bolstered by its reputation, Orléans would also find itself at te centre of istorically important events, in particular te religious battles between Catolics and Protestants wic would lead to a profound cultural and artistic transformation. At te beginning of te 16 t century, Orléans was an important city of learning wit a igly-reputed university, frequented by eminent intellectuals suc as Erasmus, Guillaume Budé, François Rabelais, Étienne de La Boétie, Teodore Beza and Jon Calvin. Te latter would set up a large, influential and active Calvinist community in Orléans and te surrounding area. During te Estates General in Place de l Étape in 1560, many umanists urged a reconciliation between Cristians. It was ere tat Micel de L Hospital gave is famous "Discourse on Toleration". Altoug a clas was inevitable, tere was room for major reforms in Orléans and a far-reacing artistic revival, inspired by te Italian way of life. Tis was largely introduced by Francis I. Religious buildings were rebuilt, roads were widened and te comfortably-off townsmen and women built temselves fine omes. We can still admire te elegant arcitecture of tese mansions, te refinement of teir ornamentation, te sculpted medallions and busts and te new façades wit teir timber-frames interspersed wit stone and bricks. Orléans invites you to browse te memories of tis fascinating past troug a multitude of events. Historic, guided and interactive tours based on our eritage will feature prominently, as will all te arts as tey would ave been experienced at te time including camber music, period dances wit a grand ball open to all on January 25 at 8 pm at te Salle Eiffel, poetry including tat of one of te most emblematic figures of te time, Pierre de Ronsard, and period literature. A series of exibitions and conferences will complete tis remarkable panorama of te past. In sort, tis is a programme troug wic everyone will be able to broaden teir knowledge or discover wat tis era of ligt and sadow was all about. Te institutions and cultural services of te Mairie d Orléans (Orléans City Hall) and te Orléans Val de Loire Tourist Office are making te most of tis opportunity to offer you a year of events, activities, tours, worksops and exibitions celebrating te Renaissance. Since te Orléans region as preserved a great deal of cultural and intellectual eritage from te period, we are inviting you to step back in time on a wonderful, patrimonial and artistic journey. Te museum is exibiting a series of engravings offering several conceptions of te missing elements including 19 t century caricatures of tis sculpture wic as become igly symbolic. Oter antiques from te Vatican and te ruins of Rome ave formed te subject of numerous engravings spread trougout Europe. Te Orléans Conservatory is celebrating tis istoric anniversary wit a ball open not only to tose wo already ave a love for Renaissance dance but also to anyone wising to give it a try. Tis event is being organised as part of te now traditional Nuit des conservatoires (Nigt of te conservatories) in wic many music scools take part. CONCERT Friday, February 1 at 8 pm. Camber Music wit te poetry of Pierre de Ronsard "Sweeteart, let us see if te rose..." Pierre de Ronsard was one of te most emblematic figures of te Renaissance era. At te turn of te 19 t and 20 t centuries, Europeans were facing an uncertain future. Artists, particularly composers, looked to te Frenc Renaissance of te 16 t century, a period tey considered full of energy and one tat spurred teir creative drive. Te poetry of Ronsard and te famous Pléiade circle became a source of musical inspiration. Ronsard's work lends itself to being sung rater tan read. It is a tribute to vocal and instrumental music. In is Abrégé de l art poétique françois, (Abstract of Frenc Poetic Art) Ronsard came up wit tis advice for an apprentice poet: "Poetry witout instruments, or witout te grace of one or several 5

From Marc 7, 2019 to January 5, 2020 Te Hôtel Cabu, a building erected in 1548 on te orders of Pillipe Cabu, a prosperous Orléans lawyer, is of great arcitectural interest. Te ornamented façade is arranged over tree floors and embellised by fine, carved decorations. Tese tree, superimposed orders, in te Henri II style, are te first signs of te system of orders, wic originated in Italy, being imported into te arcitecture of Orléans. Tis fine, Renaissance mansion is now ome to te collections of te Musée d Histoire et d Arcéologie d Orléans (Orléans Museum of History and Arcaeology). Te 30 students studying Motion Design at te Gobelins École de l'image (Paris), wo ave spent a year learning ow to bring grapics to life troug movement, ave created tis original work to celebrate te 500t anniversary of te Renaissance. 15 CONFERENCE and onlining of digitalised collections Renaissance and digitalisation: a new view of te arcives Friday, May 17 at 6.30 pm Largely destroyed in 1940, little remains of te City of Orléans' pre-1790 arcives. Tis renders te surviving documents all te more precious and valuable. To sowcase tem and celebrate te 500 years of te Renaissance, te Orléans Arcive department is placing teir old collections, in particular, te city and fortress's accounts, online. Te conference, wic will present te istory of tese digitalised records, will also provide an opportunity to discuss te policy followed since 2011 of digitalising te city's administrative arcives. Friday, June 14 at 6 pm (doors open at 5.30 pm) Despite major demolition work due to town planning in te 19 t and 20 t centuries and a fire in 1940, studying te evolution of arcitecture and domestic living arrangements in Orléans is relatively easy tanks to a ric corpus of ouses erected at te end of te Middle Ages and te beginning of te Modern era. Best-known now for its alf-timbered ouses, Orléans, a umanist otbed in te second Renaissance, is also reputed for te quality of its stone and/or brick buildings. Te aim is to present several categories of buildings, from te multi-functional ome inerited from centuries past to te large ouses tat were te first examples of private mansions in te town, often built by ric townsmen or people of great importance.
