BEST, as Board of European Students of Technology born in 1989 in Berlin with the aim of supporting cultural exchange among all the young european university students. Today BEST has 96 local group everyone in a different university, located in 33 european states. We organize courses, engineering competitions, travel and many other activities to enrich your curriculum. 5 1. About France and Nice France, officially French Republic is a semi presidential republic. The president is François Hollande. It s one of the founder of European Union. It host important institutions like the European Parliament, Council of Europe and UNESCO. Lyon is the most important city of the Côte d'azur and the fifth biggest city in France. It counts inhabitants and covers an area of 71,92 km² (Milano covers an area of 181,67 and counts inhabitants) 2. Structure of Nice & Climate Nice, located in the Varo river s basin, near the Italian border, is above all a tourist city. It is characterized by two small rivers (Pavillon and Magnan), usually dry during summer, and by various hills like the Cimella, famous for its ancient Roman ruins and the Castle s hill which divides the city and the harbour. Extended on the north-east hill there is the characteristic district of Cimiez, the most high-ranking residential one. It is famous for the Excelsior Règina Palace hotel which hosted Queen Victoria and her court in 1896, now turned into residential apartments and also for many other classic tourist attractions such as the ancient Benedectine monastery, the archeological museum and the museum Matisse. As regards the city centre, among the most famous streets Promenade des Anglais, near the sea and on which many hotels and casinò overlook is perfect for a peaceful evening walk. Near the promenade there is also Avenue Jean- Mèdecin: a large pedestrian area from the railway station to Place Massèna. Of course the more night owls cannot miss a stop at the Vieux-Nice: the traditional historical center of the city, composed by narrow streets overlooked by pubs and boites de nuit for all tastes. 6 Palace and typical monuments. The most famous street is Cours Saleya, characterized by a suggestive flower market. The climate is subtropical, the average temperature in October is 18 degrees. 3. Monuments and historical sites Nice offers visitors many sights and attractions. There is something for everyone, no matter if you are seeking arts and culture, shopping, nightlife, sport events or hall atmosphere. You can find important museums, walk through beautiful parks and gardens, or visit majestic churches. 5

7 Musée d Art moderne et d Art contemporain (MAMAC) Located in the heart of Nice, it opened in Its collection, focused on the postwar era, comprises more than works from 300 artists and each year six to nine temporary exhibitions from regional and international artists are proposed to visitors. Last but not least, do not miss its fantastic rooftop, offering an amazing and unique view of Nice! Palais Lascaris It is a seventeenth-century aristocratic building located in the old town of Nice, owned by the Vintimille-Lascaris family until In 1942, it was bought by the city of Nice and currently it is a musical instrument museum collecting over 500 instruments ( France s second most important collection). Place Massèna It is a historic square in Nice, named after Andrè Massèna and designed by Joseph Vernier in It is also the main square of the city, now bordered by red ochre buildings of Italian architecture. It is used for concerts and particularly during the summer festival, the carnival parade (Corso carnavalesque) in February and the military procession of 14 July (Bastille day). 6

8 Cathèdrale Sainte Reparate It is a Roman Catholic cathedral, seat of the Diocese of Nice. The construction of the main part of its current body started in 1650 and finished in After its consecration in 1699 new structures and decorative elements were added until Dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and Saint Reparata, it has been classified as a national monument since 9 August Monastère de Cimiez Founded in the eight century by Benedectine friars coming from Saint-Pons abbey, it is composed by the church of Notre-Dame-de-l Assomption and a Franciscan museum ( it has been inhabited by Franciscan friars since 1546). It is surrounded by the friar s ancient vegetable garden and the nearby cemetery where prominent figures, such as the painter Henri Matisse and the nobel prize for literature Roger Martin du Gard, are buried. 7

10 The same ticket is valid for both tram and bus transportation. One Solo ticket lasts 74 minutes. There are 5 pullman lines, called the Noctambus, that are active from 9pm to 01.10am Note: Before first embarking, the ticket must be validated. 6. How to get to Nice with us 9

Gastronomy In Nice a complete and raffinate meal made of Appetiser, Primo, Dessert and Drink can cost up to 60. It is possible to eat in a restaurant with 15-20, though. Nice is famous for its numerous bistrots (a tavern or small café) and brasseries where it s possible to eat while listening to a live jazz or lyric music. 14 10. Nightlife The offer for nightlife in Nice is rich. Quartier Vieux-Nice and especially Course Saleya have a lot of locals. There is a wide variety of bars and pubs scattered all over the city. It is not always easy to choose between Irish, English, Latino, Cuban, and other rather exotic flavours, there are even the traditional bars that tourists usually really love for an aperitif. Indeed the BEST moment to drink and eat is during happy hour (18:00-20:00 or 17:00-19:00 depending from the place) as the price are lower. If you want to dance there is no lack of clubs and disco and of Casinò too such as the famous Rhul Casino. If you prefer a more relaxing and romantic evening the city acquire more beauty during the night thanks to the atmosphere created by suffused lights. 11.
