1 Treasure Hunt in Old Rauma Old Rauma is the largest historical wooden town in the Nordic countries and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is a unique example of the traditional wooden architecture and urbanism survived to the present day. This treasure hunt leads you through the old town showing the most important sights on the way. The idea is to enjoy the atmosphere, look around and find answers to the questions together with your partners, there s no need to rush. You can earn extra points by recognizing the objects in the photos. In this leaflet you will find also extra information, which is not necessary to complete the hunt, but it is there to make your walk more interesting. Enjoy the hunt! (

3 Go straight on until you come to a square called Kalatori (fish market). Go to the park by the square and find the answers to the questions 5 and 6. The fish market was located by the sea in the Middle Ages, but as the land is rising the shore is now further away. The remains of the Church of the Holy Trinity (Pyhän kolminaisuuden kirkko) are located in the middle of the park. The church was built of wood in the 14 th century and completed with new stone parts in the 15 th century. It was destroyed in a fire in Samuel Nyberg founded a pharmacy in Rauma. The business became successful as he opened also a tavern in the same premises. Before his death he donated his property to the poor. At what age did Samuel Nyberg pass away? 6. How many flowers are there on the railing around the cross? Go to Kauppakatu at the other end of the square. 7. Find the house with this kind of windows. It was once the home of wealthy tradesmen and ship- building families, who regularly supported lace makers by buying laces for their linens. The house has operated as a museum since the beginning of the 1980 s. What s the name of the house?

4 8. Turn right to Kauppakatu. The first street to the left is Kitukränn, the narrowest Street in Finland. Estimate the length of the street and the width at its narrowest point. Continue along Kauppakatu to the square called Hauenguano (snout of a pike). By the square is located the first private stone house built in Rauma. 9. When was the stone house built? 10. What do the letters on the wall stand for? 11. What is the building used for nowadays? Take street Kuninkaankatu to the left. Rauma dialect (sometimes called Rauma language) differs from other Finnish dialects. Charateristic to the dialect is shortening of words and abundance of loan words brought by sailors from Swedish, English, Russian, Estonian and French languages. 12. H.J. Nortamo is famous for writing stories about Rauma and its sailor culture in the local dialect. He was born in Jokela house. What is the address of Nortamo s birthplace? 13. When was H.J. Nortamo born? Turn back, take Vähäpoikkikatu to the left and cross the small river. By the river there is a group of wooden buildings surrounded by a fence.

5 14. The name of the house, which is now a museum, is a female name. What is it called? The oldest of the buildings was built in the 18 th century. A part of the yard is separated by a fence into an area where animals could be let out in the winter. Cows were kept in here until the 1950 s.the ownership of the house was matrilinear: most of the times the daughter would bring a husband into the house. The women of this house have been well-known lace makers from the 17 hundreds until today. The house is now furnished as a seaman s home from the late 19th century. Go to the left by the river towards the church. 15. In the park there is an anvil (made of iron) standing on a wooden platform. What text is engraved on the side of the anvil? 16. What are the names of the two bridges near the Church of the Holy Cross - Pyhän ristin kirkko The Church of the Holy Cross was built in the late 15th century. Originally it was the church of the Franciscan monastery. In 1538, during reformation, the monastery was shut down and the church was taken over by Lutherans. 17. What figure is standing in the square next to the church? Walk over the bridge to Isokirkonkatu and find these decorative columns. 18. What is the address of the house? 19. How many columns does the house have?

6 Go right along Vähäkoulukatu by the river and turn left to Länsikatu. 20. Where does Saint Nikolaos pray? (the address or the name of the place) Turn left to Kuninkaankatu and go on to Kauppatori - Market Square. CONGRATULATIONS! You have completed the treasure hunt. Return the leaflets to the hosts in Café Sali by the Market Square.
