Foreword The idyllic region surrounding Rogla-Pohorje may not have made it onto the holiday itineraries of most as of yet, but that is all about to change. The greener-than-green surroundings and fascinating mosaic of history, culture and humanity that can be found here will tick all of the boxes of most visitors, making Rogla-Pohorje a secret waiting to be uncovered. Slovenske Konjice, Zreče, Rogla, Oplotnica and Vitanje make up the guide you currently have in your hands, five destinations that each offer a little bit of something for everyone. Slovenske Konjice is the biggest town here but don t let that mislead you - this is a relaxed community centre perfect for relaxation. The nearby Žiče Charterhouse could well be the dictionary definition of tranquility. Zreče and Rogla almost come hand in hand. Once upon a time this was a small village of little interest, but one man s vision and enthusiasm led to an industry created and a town re-born. Wellness and skiing fanatics will find themselves in their element here, a wonderful juxtaposition of high octane excitement and slow composure. Oplotnica and Vitanje may be equally small in comparison but both pack a mighty punch - Oplotnica is home to one of our favourite parks, whilst Vitanje brings an old-time charm that literally sits next to one of Europe s most forward thinking institutions in the shape of KSEVT. So dive in and check out one of Slovenia s up and coming regions before your friends and foes get the chance. As always we welcome any and all feedback, be it through Facebook, Instagram, good old fashioned , or even scrawled into the snowy pistes at Rogla. Publisher InYourPocket, IQbator d.o.o. 5 Arriving & Getting around Just 100km from everywhere The improvements in Slovenia s public transport network have only just spread to this region, and as such getting to Rogla-Pohorje isn t as easy as it should be. Things are improving, but it will take time yet. Those traveling by car will have the easiest task, although getting between Ljubljana and Slovenske Konjice by bus isn t too taxing, quite the opposite - the journey takes in some rather delightful landscapes. The automobile is also the best option for traveling between the towns, as buses have a tendency to stop at every possible stop between the municipalities. Those in no rush are in luck. ARRIVING IN ROGLA-POHORJE BY PLANE It should come as no surprise to hear that there isn t an international airport in the area, but the central location of this land means there are plenty within reach. Rogla-Pohorje is an easy drive away from international airports as varied as Ljubljana (105km), Maribor (30km), Graz (95km), Klagenfurt (120km) and Zagreb (110km). Those relying on public transport upon arrival are best suited flying into Ljubljana. BY CAR Arriving by car is highly recommended, both for the ease of movement and ease of arrival. Being free of the restrictions of public transport timetables is an absolute joy for travellers, and one s enjoyment of Rogla-Pohorje will be all the better for being behind the wheel oneself. Ljubljana is an hours drive away via the A1, and it is that same road that separates Slovenske Konjice and Maribor (30 minutes or so). Those driving in from Graz should take the A9 and A1 roads, and from Zagreb you should arrive via the E59. The journey from the Croatian capital should take just shy of two hours, although one must always take into account possible border complications, not to mention stopping for refreshments. BY BUS Those without the luxury of a personal vehicle are left to the whims of the Slovenian public transport network. Ljubljana and Slovenske Konjice are connected by three daily buses, leaving the capital at 09:30, 12:00 and 13:10 respectively, the last of which also goes through Zreče. This journey sometimes necessitates a change of bus in Celje, but as the driver also changes bus this shouldn t prove too difficult to work out. Slovenske Konjice is a stop on the Ljubljana - Maribor line, and as such buses from Slovenia s second city run three times a day as well. If you re looking to get the bus from Austria or Croatia, you are going to have to go via Ljubljana or Maribor (or possibly Celje). GETTING AROUND BY CAR The roads that connect the various towns and villages of Rogla-Pohorje are often a joy to drive on, especially the thoroughfares that take you high up into the hills of the area. Driving also affords the visitor the chance to stop and take in landscapes at will, undoubtedly one of the highlights of the region. Don t expect to drive for more than 20 minutes between any of the towns included in this guide. BY BUS Local buses traverse the area, connecting Slovenske Konjice with Zreče, Vitanje, Oplotnica and the rest. There is a delightful nostalgia to the routes themselves, all frequent stops and home comforts, although after a few days that may well get a little tired. 2017/2018 5

Culture Foreword & Events doesn t mean you can t! The marathon is held on the last Sunday in September, with the 2017 event taking place on September 24. QSlovenske Konjice, tel , teci@konjiskimaraton.si, A touching nod to tradition in Oplotnica s majestic park Festival of Folk Music Oplotnica s main square almost seems tailor-made for engaging summer events, and a new one made its debut on the calendar in Oplotnica s first festival of folk music took place this year, with the musical heritage of the area being celebrated and honoured in the most vibrant manner possible. A whole host of live ensembles paid tribute to the folk history, and we can only hope that this event returns to the calendar in QOplotnica, KUD Oplotnica, info@kud-oplotnica.si, Oplotnica Municipal Holiday Oplotnica is a young municipality to say the least, with 2017 marking the 19th year of independent existence for the town on the Oplotniščica River. Every May the municipality celebrates its birthday with a vibrant weekend festival, as the good and the great of the town come together to present everything that makes Oplotnica the place it is today. Local food, customs and art combine to paint the town in its best light, and in 2017 the holiday was accentuated by the introduction of the Festival of Folk Music. Birthdays are meant to be fun, and this is no exception. QOplotnica Holcerija A fixture on the Vitanje calendar ever since 1989, Holcerija is an annual event in the town that shines light on the traditions and cultural heritage of this little part of the country. The proud history of wood gathering takes centre stage, accompanied by exhibitions, live music and a whole lot more, as almost the entire village comes out to celebrate the history of their home, with a new tradition is presented every single year. Holcerija usually takes place in August, as summer reaches its apex. QVitanje, TD Vitanje, , Konjiški Maraton (Konjice Marathon) Okay, so a marathon might not exactly be everyone s kind of entertainment, but if you have to do one then there aren t many more picturesque surroundings in which to do it than the Konjiška gora (Konjice Mountain) and the Dravinja Valley. Whether you are running 5km, 10km or even 21km, this is as aesthetically impressive as a marathon is going to get, the route eventually snaking through to Slovenske Konjice itself. We won t be making it to the finish line, but that Traditional Autumn Tourist Games World Tourism Day is celebrated on September 27, and Zreče gets involved via the Traditional Autumn Tourist Games, which celebrates its 20th year in Whilst the event name might create ideas of Olympics-esque competition and a desperate scramble for personal bests, the games are as culinary as they are competitive, with the cakes and soups more important than any event. The games take place outside of Terme Zreče on the Sunday before World Tourism day, with the 2017 games beginning on September 24. For more information contact the TIC office in Zreče. QZreče, tel +386 (0) St. Martin s Day in Slovenske Konjice Saint Martin may have started out as a Roman Soldier before growing up to become a quiet and peaceful monk, but the annual November 11 celebration has a lot more to do with wine than the venerated Martin these days. This is the day when the must traditionally turns to wine, and St. Martin s Day has become a much anticipated day on the Slovenian calendar. It is when the new wine is blessed, and this coming is accompanied in Slovenske Konjice with a full schedule of cultural events and more. QSlovenske Konjice, tel , info@tickonjice.si, Winter Wonderland Winter in Slovenia is a wonderful time, and Slovenske Konjice doesn t miss out on the joy. The centre of the town becomes a veritable Winter Wonderland at the beginning of December, with treats for adults and children alike as far as the eye can see. A children s skating rink is allied with cultural events and a bevy of domestic crafts on show, along with the usual warm beverages and winter grub. Just don t forget to wrap up warm! QSlovenske Konjice, tel , info@tickonjice.si, Summer Musical Evenings in Žiče Charterhouse Žiče Charterhouse is a magical setting for pretty much any sort of activity, but live music on a balmy summer s evening may well have to take the cake. A host of Slovenian and international bands light up the ethereal structure over the summer, creating an unforgettable atmosphere and the sort of live music experience you simply can t replicate. It is almost worth checking out regardless of who is playing, but more often than not the sounds come close to matching the setting in terms of quality. The concerts are held throughout July and August, and check with the TIC office in Slovenske Konjice for a full schedule. 8 Slovenske Konjice Slovenske Konjice s town centre is as idyllic as they come Nestled under the northern slopes of Konjiška Gora, you might assume that the city in the embrace of noble stories saw such a moniker as a cheap opportunity to attract visitors, but you would be wrong - Slovenske Konjice backs up that name with some aplomb. Formerly the City of Wine and Flowers, Slovenske Konice still ticks this box whilst backing up its modern moniker, as a town full of history and fascinating tales. The flowers part comes through years of consistent award winning for the town s floral displayed, not to mention two gold medals in the pan-european Entente Floral competition, won in 1998 and as horse, and the symbol of the town is a white horse. Supposedly the patron saint of the town (George) rode in on such a horse and killed a dragon, presumably the one whose slobber created the elegant stream that dissects the town centre. The town was actually known as Konjice up until 1934, when the decision was made to add Slovenske in order to distinguish the town from the Herzegovinian town Konjic. The surroundings are full of interest, whether in the shape of the aforementioned Škalce hills full of wine or the enchanting Žiče Charterhouse nearby. There is a lot more to this place than just flowers and wine. The wine? Well, the wine growing hills of Škalce are visible from everywhere in town, and oenophiles will be in dreamland here. This 1000 year old market town is built on the delightful Konjice stream that runs through its middle, a stream that manages to be referred to as Zmajeva slina (Dragon s slobber) by the locals yet not lose any of its majesty. Modern Slovenske Konjice is centred around the new town centre and the traditional old heart of the town, and to call a stroll through the town charming would be doing it a serious disservice. Those of you who are vaguely familiar with Slavic languages may well make out the animalistic bent of the town s name, and you would not be wrong. The name is derived from the Slovenian word konj, which translates SIGHTSEEING Church of St. George The dominant structure at the top of Slovenske Konjice s town centre is the Church of St. George, although the history of Konjice worship go further back than this late Gothic building. The first mention of a parish church on this site came in 1146, and over 870 years later the church is still alive and well in town. The church s last renovation came in 1977, and the interior ticks all of the comforting boxes that churches should. The original 12 side altars have been reduced to just five and a single main, and statues of the saints Peter, Paul, John and Jerome make this a fascinating stop on your stroll to Trebnik mansion. 8 Rogla-Pohorje In Your Pocket rogla-pohorje.inyourpocket.com

Zlati Grič This winery covers the entire region to the east and is set amidst beautiful countryside. Being new, everything is modern and state-of-the-art. The grapes are used to cultivate vintage wines, and although this winery is new, the tradition for producing wine here dates back eight hundred years. The winery is known for its high-quality red, white and sparkling wines - you can try these in the huge tasting room. The wine cellar and visitor centre are located at the lower end of the vineyards in a large modern building that is mostly underground. There s also a restaurant within an old vineyard cottage, in the middle of vineyards. And if you like golf there s a challenging 9-hole golf course surrounding the vineyards. If you fall in love with the scenery as well as the wine, you can stay over. A centuries-old villa in the middle of the vineyards offers three apartments for rent. It looks like something from a painting or a movie and the rates are remarkably cheap. QŠkalce 86, tel +386 (0) , info@ zlati-gric.si. Trebnik Mansion Those familiar with shopping for natural products in Ljubljana may be familiar with the name Trebnik, and it is this mansion underneath Konjice s castle that gives the stores their moniker. The history of the mansion stretches all the way back to 1362, and both the town park beneath and the wood trim trail above fit comfortably under the picturesque descriptor. Its most famous owners were the Princes of Windisch-Grätz, nobles who used Trebnik as a summer home and were creative and disciplined with it came to gardening, thus beginning Trebnik s long and Slovenske Konjice proud history of herbalism. The mansion has two tracts, both of which have been renovated over the years. The municipality is in charge of the building that was used as a pensioner s home in the 1980s, so expect its heritage to be protected for the foreseeable future. QGrajska 4, tel +386 (0) info@trebnik.com. Old Castle Being one of the oldest castles in a country full of grand old manors is no mean feat, but it is exactly what Slovenske Konjice s Old Castle (obviously) is. Its first owners were the grandiose-sounding Lords of Konjice in the 12th century, and over the next six centuries it passed through a number of hands (including those of the Holy Roman Emperor and the Žiče Charterhouse) until the Princes of Windisch-Grätz took over in 1828, by which point the castle was ruined. Time has taken its toll on this grand old structure but a gradual restoration is underway, meaning this proud old citadel won t go the way of many other old castles just yet. Austro-Hungarian Military Museum The Austro-Hungarian Empire was one of the many historical empires to fall apart following World War One, and the military heritage of the Central European superpower is protected in Slovenske Konjice in the shape of this private museum. A host of medals, swords, helmets and more are on show in this small museum next to the Church of St. George, with some focus put on the miserable Slovene experience of the Soča Front during World War One. You must call ahead for a visit, but doing so is easily done. 10 Slovenske Konjice Žiče Charterhouse Serene, tranquil and fascinating. All of those words fail to adequately describe the feeling of visiting this important cultural monument short drive away from Slovenske Konjice. Dating from 1165, the partially ruined monastery sits in the St Janez Krstnik (St John the Baptist) valley, and it was the oldest Carthusian monastery in Slovenia, boasting one of the oldest pharmacies to boot. In a beautiful location surrounded by rolling hills and forest, it attracts around 20,000 visitors a year. The ruins that are left are remarkable, and despite the decay and dereliction the various towers, stone walls and exposed brickwork are a joy to behold. But, as lovely as the gothic arches and round watch towers are, there s much more to it than just a building. In summer, benches are set up in the middle of the main courtyard and concerts are held here. It even has its own wine cellar featuring Zlati Grič sparkling wines. The monastery shop is a treat too, selling medicinal herbs from the herb garden, elixirs and schnapps. The schnapps are mostly herbal (and so they re good for you!) but they also sell beer schnapps, which is possibly unique to here and most definitely worth a try. Once an important centre of influence, the monastery was attacked (like much of this part of the orld) during the Ottoman raids of After this its fortunes started to decline. It changed hands from the monks to the Jesuits of Graz and back to the Carthusians again before being abolished in 1782 by Emperor Joseph II. The charterhouse fell into ruin and was owned by Prince Weriand of Windisch-Grätz and his family until the end of World War II. It is now owned by the municipality of Slovenske Konjice. The Carthusian order placed a great deal of importance in writing and creating texts and the main section of the monastery has an exhibition of old manuscripts. There is a permanent exhibition in the restored upper section of the outbuilding. Here, you can learn about the history of the charterhouse by taking your own tour with an audio guide or joining a pre-booked group. At the entrance to the monastery is the Gastuž Inn which is said to be the oldest inn on Slovenian territory, dating back to 1467, and is one of the oldest still operating in Central Europe. QŠpitalič pri Slovenskih Konjicah 9, 3215 Loče, tel +386 (0) , info@zickakartuzija.si. Open April - October 10:00-18:00 (closed Mon), November 10:00-16:00 (closed Mon), December - March 10:00-16:00 (closed Mon - Wed). Church of Virgin Mary s Visitation Separated from the Žiče Charterhouse by the beautiful St. John the Baptist s Valley, the Church of Virgin Mary s Visitation was built with French charterhouses in mind. The so-called lower monastery was primarily used by lay monks who provided the Carthusians with whatever was necessary to maintain the monastery, but the monks also took in guests and travellers in what can be considered an early precursor of the hostel. There was also a hospital here, allowing those in the church to care for the sick whilst accommodating traveling guests. 10 Rogla-Pohorje In Your Pocket rogla-pohorje.inyourpocket.com

The best of local art can be seen at the Riemer Town Gallery Old Square (Stari Trg) Slovenske Konjice s old town square is a surprising delight, although any clean stretch of and old town with an adorable stream running through the middle is always going to set the heart a-flutter. The square dates back to 1146, and many buildings in the old town are adorned with plaques giving information about the men and women who lived and worked there throughout history, with two striking frescoes (at numbers 2 and 38) paying homage to the many fires that have ravaged Slovenske Konjice in the nine centuries since. If you re a fan of sitting in the sunshine sipping coffee whilst enjoying the relaxing sounds of an old stream (who isn t?), Slovenske Konjice s old town is for you. Town Square (Mestni Trg) Slovenske Konjice s town square does not come with the history of the Old Square but that isn t to say it is bereft of interesting, as a number of interesting monuments and comforting cafes can be found here. The town square is dwarfed somewhat by an striking blast of Yugoslav architecture that stands taller than any other building in the city, but don t be put off by that. Riemer Town Gallery This splendidly restored town house in Slovenske Konjice s old town is home to the Riemer Town Gallery, a vast collection of paintings from the early Renaissance all the way through to the current day. Local and foreign artists are showcased here, with the oldest painting coming from the 15th century and the newest from the modern age. The gallery is also home to a unique collection of antique furniture. Be sure to call ahead in order to guarantee a look around. The Firefighting Museum (or Firefighting Museum of the Dravinja Valley, to be exact) is an homage to all things fireman, with plenty of firefighting objects, photos, uniforms and equipment waiting to be discovered. The museum is unsurprisingly located above the Slovenske Konjice fire station. Those looking for something to do with children should certainly take a look. QŽička cesta 4, tel +386 (0) , +386 (0) , info@tickonjice.si, Fountain for Two Birds A striking monument in Slovenske Konjice s town centre, Fountain For Two Birds was created by Celje artist Franc Purg in 1987 before being redesigned for an urban landscape in The monument depicts two birds, with the small one being fed by the large one. The larger of the two birds has a broken wing, which symbolises experience and turmoil. The monument was initially dedicated to ideas of freedom in what was then Yugoslavia. 2017/

There is more on offer, but the old style interior and abundance of football memorabilia seems to inspire one to sip the amber nectar. The pub has a huge Slovenske Konjice outdoor area complete with table football and more, and occasionally hosts entertainment events. An English pub with a Slovene soul most likely sums it up. FORK & PORK As well as having one of the finest restaurant names we have heard in years, Fork & Pork offers exactly what one would expect from an establishment with such a name. Fork & Pork is actually the central butcher s in Slovenske Konjice (opened back in 1970), but the owners decided to add a bistro in order to sate the meaty appetites of the local folk. It describes itself as being delicious, quick and domestic, and we are hard-pushed to find any fault with that description. QStari trg 11, tel +386 (0) Open 07:00-19:00, Sat 07:00-13:00. Closed Sun. 16 Rogla No need to check the map guys - you ve already found the lake At 1,517 metres above sea level, the small mountain resort of Rogla some 15km north of Zreče offers excellent value winter sports holidays between December and April in one self-contained resort all on the southwest face of the mountain that gave the resort its name. The origins of Rogla as a holiday destination date back to the decades preceding the Second World War, although much of the original village was destroyed during the German occupation of Slovenia between 1941 and Featuring modern facilities including the addition of snow machines, the resort is a popular favourite with many locals as well as the scores of ever-increasing visitors from abroad who appreciate the excellent value for money the resort gives. Accommodation in Rogla includes just about everything from dormitory-style barracks for the ultimate low budget holiday to swanky new hotels complete with expensive restaurants and Jacuzzis. Either as a holiday destination on its own or as part of a larger itinerary that takes in a few of the other marvellous locations in the region, Rogla deserves more attention. The following provides an overview of the facilities on offer. SIGHTSEEING Church of Jesus Christ What would churches have looked like if instead of renovating the old ones, we decided to build brand new ones? The Church of Jesus Christ at Rogla is a good indication of what we may have come up with. Blessed in 2010, this unusual looking church is one of the highest in Slovenia (by altitude) at 1,517m and comes complete with three bells dedicated to the patron saints of blacksmiths, herdsmen and miners. An impressive organ and altar add extra interest, although work is not finished on the interior. The look of the church from the outside is reason enough to visit however. Lovrenc Lakes The day we tire of beautiful lakes is the day we need to get out of this profession. A series of between 11 and 22 (depending on water levels) bodies of water make up Lovrenc Lakes, covering some 16 hectares of land over 1,500m into the sky, not far from Rogla and cozily sat between the peaks of Planinka and Mulej. 17 the most southern marshes of their kind and the spruce forests that surround them make for a unique experience, one exacerbated by the specially designated walks around the area via wooden paths. ACTIVITIES Rogla Unitur Ski Resort The nerve centre of the resort, this multi-purpose facility spread out over just under 100 hectares at elevations between 1,050 metres and 1,517 metres guarantees over 100 days of snow-related sports and activities a year. Featuring 11 well-maintained runs totalling 15 kilometres (beginner, intermediate, advance, expert) for people of all ages and abilities plus nine ski lifts and two chair lifts, the resort really is a serious affair and well worth further investigation. There's also a fun park on the side of Mašin Žaga for skiers and snowboarders featuring a half pipe, jumps and other bits and pieces for the new generation of snow-sports fanatics who've recently taken both disciplines to exciting new levels. There's cross-country facilities too, and the chance to ski at night on two welllit slopes. All types of teaching are available in English from a range of highly qualified staff and there's even the opportunity to ride horses. Last but not least, there's also plenty of facilities for those who can't resist a little aprèsski. Depending on precise weather conditions, the resort is open from some time in December until the middle of April. QCesta na Rogla 15, tel +386 (0) , Cross Country Center For those who prefer a slightly less frenetic pace of life on the snow, the Rogla Unitur Ski Resort also offers an international standard cross country ski centre. More than just a place for recreation, the centre is laid out as a fully functioning series of tracks for big international events. For those who've never experienced cross country skiing Rogla's acclaimed School of Snowsports has instructors on hand to put newcomers through their paces. School of Snowsports A well-run affair offering a mind-boggling choice of tuition types from short skiing lessons to half-day introductions to snowboarding to full week-long packages for the more ambitious. Some of seven full-time staff who work here and who support a part-time team of around 60 instructors are involved in the national Olympic winter sports team. RESTAURANTS Brusnica Restaurant Exquisite ambience is allied with some of the finest views of Pohorje you are going to get, making Brusnica one of the best options for dining at Rogla. The menu is largely comprised of locally sourced ingredients, including a selection of fine Slovenian wines. The restaurant has a 16 tasting menu, and the hall can be used for events and weddings and more. QOpen 11:00-22:00. 18 Zreče Skomarje House is found in Slovenia s highest functioning village Idyllically located at the foothills of the Pohorje Mountains, Zreče has evolved immensely over the past few decades. History stretches back a long way here, but the first written mention of the town didn t arrive until the end of the 10th century. Tradition was the norm in these parts for the following centuries, with agriculture the predominant way of life until the explosion of industry in the 20th century. At the head of the industrial development was a chap by the name of Marijan Osole, and it was Gospodin Osole who dragged Zreče from the past to the present and beyond. Tourism grew and grew thanks to the determination of Osole to develop the area, and the Terme Zreče spa and ski resort at Rogla became two of Slovenia s most popular spots. With such a laid back atmosphere surrounding the elite facilities of both, it is easy to see why. Whether it is relaxing in the spa, hitting the slopes 15km outside of Zreče or combining the two in the fresh mountain air, Zreče has much to offer in the 21st century. Osole would be immensely proud. Zreče s fame stretches all the way to the UK too, where the town was famously twinned with Sedbergh as part of BBC s The Town That Wants A Twin documentary. The municipality continues to develop, but the town has notably found a relieving groove between industry, agriculture and pure tourism, one that stands Zreče in good stead as it moves towards the future. The near 7,000 that live here don t know how lucky they are. For more information on any of the sights listed below, pop into Zreče s TIC and say hello. SIGHTSEEING Skomarje House In a country full of villages in mountains it takes something special to be the highest functioning one, and something special is exactly what Skomarje is. That people still farm way up here in the mountains is impressive enough, but the tiny village is also home to a number of cultural and herit-age sites that make the trek up worth it. The centre of cultural life in Skomarje is undoubtedly the eponymous house, a 17th century building that was restored in the 20th century and frequently houses poetry readings, workshops and the like. Elements of the late medieval smokehouse style are on show here alongside later advances such as the black kitchen, with everything set out to mimic how life was lived in Skomarje in the long ago. The building was home to an entry room, a living room, a sleeping room, a kitchen and even a press room, but the restoration meant that certain functions had to be altered, as the whole house wasn t able to be a part of the museum. QSkomarje 30 Vodovnik Collection in Skomarje The splendid hilltop village of Skomarje was the birthplace of Jurij Vodovnik, a 19th century folk artists and singer who was a peer of the great France Prešeren. A historical presentation of his life can be found at the aptly-named Vodovnik Collection, house in the Church of St. Lambert. The religious and educational activities of the village in the late 19th century can also be explored, along with an exhibition of Mr. Vodovnik s works. 18 Rogla-Pohorje In Your Pocket rogla-pohorje.inyourpocket.com

Zreče TERME ZREČE The spas at Zreče were somewhat instrumental in helping the town evolve from a quiet village of nothing into one of a bustling centre of activity. It isn t an exaggeration to say that tourist life in Zreče is centred around the wellness centre, the grand establishment that takes centre stage in the middle of the town. If you find yourself feeling somewhat stressed during your visit or in need of an escape from the rigours of everyday life, take your pick from the options detailed below. For more information, head to the official website. tel +386 (0) , blagajnat@unitur.eu, IDYLL The Idyll (or IDILA) Wellness and Spa Centre is named so for a very good reason. Sure, it didn t take a whole lot of imagination to come up with the name, but why stress over creativity when one can lie back and relax? A whole host of therapeutic avenues are available, including a vast array of traditional Thai therapies, a variety of massages and the combination of experienced hands and fascinating oils, rocks and more. Those looking for a romantic getaway with their partner will find their desires more than fulfilled here - does it get any more romantic than a candlelit, scented bath? THERMAL SWIMMING POOLS Zreče offers a whole heap of options for the swimming enthusiasts out there. Even those less enthusiastic about splashing around in water will find something to enjoy here too, in any of the indoor and outdoor pools waiting to be explored. With temperatures ranging from 27 to 35 degrees centigrade, the waters offer a therapeutic element all of their own. There is also a massage pool and children s splash pool, along with massage pools and more. In summer you can even hurtle down the toboggan at the Forest Water Park. SAUNA VILLAGE Whilst we always find saunas to be a somewhat confusing experience (what exactly are you supposed to do?), we can t deny that we always feel like a million euros whenever we come out of one. Zreče has an entire village of the things waiting to be sat in, from five Finnish saunas to two steam equivalents and even two infrared versions. All offer a true shot in the arm when ti comes to health, topped off with the cooling swimming pool or the sun terrace. HOTEL ATRIJ SUPERIOR Zreče s premium accommodation option is bestowed with a tasteful combination of the modern and traditional. A sleek interior throughout features touches such as warm cosy colours in the rooms and an apple veneer. The latter is connected with the area s apple orchard heritage. The Gala Suites are great for romancing (with saunas and massage tubs), the family room being spacious and comfortable. Culinarily speaking, the Atrij superior offers nutrition with tradition, and pleasant views of the atrium itself. HOTEL VITAL Zreče s mid-range residence is very well equipped, sharing lots of amenities with its sibling hotels: the multipurpose hall, snack bar and range of swimming pools (indoor, outdoor, kids and whirlpool). There s even a gallery. Of course, being named the Vital, you can lap up the virtues of the wellness complex on your doorstep, but if the doorstep is a little to far, you should stay in one of the suites and take advantage of your own Finnish sauna. The restaurant is divided between self-service buffet and A la carte. TERME ZREČE VILLAS Located in the park next to the delightful Zreče Lake, these 10 suite houses are perfectly set up for families looking to make the most of what Terme Zreče has to offer. The natural surroundings are every bit as idyllic as one would assume, and the proximity to the hotel and swimming pools make the villas a fine option for those staying in Zreče. Even your pets will find a welcome here! /

Zreče The Frankolovo Atrocity In February 1945, Slovenian resistance fighters, or partisans, ambushed and killed one of the most important Nazi functionaries in the country, the Celje Gauleiter and provincial councillor Anton Dorfmeister. In retribution, just over a week later the local Nazi occupational authorities chose 100 prisoners at random from the concentration camps in Maribor, Celje and Trbovlje, most of whom were captured partisan fighters, and moved them to the Stari Pisker prison in Celje. The next morning, 12 February 1945, they were brought to a quiet stretch of road in Graben na Stranicah near the settlement of Frankolovo, and hung them from the apple trees that lines the road. In all it took over three hours to carry out the executions with up to five people being hung from the same tree. Several hours later other prisoners were forced to cut the bodies down and bury them in two mass graves nearby. This gruesome event, known in Slovene as Frankolovo Zločin (the Frankolovo Atrocity), has been commemorated with the establishment of a small but moving exhibition in a built along the road where the executions took place. The exhibition include mirrored portraits of many of the victims, which have been made in such a way that the faces are only visible from certain angles, giving them an ephemeral quality that chills the spine. Also presented are some of the letters that the prisons wrote to their loved ones after being told that they were to die. Opposite the house there is a large memorial sculpture, next to which has been posted a reproduction of the original announcement - in German and Slovene - of the names of those who were were to be executed. Ošlak Forge Still working more than two centuries after it was first established, this top quality blacksmithing shop is still churning out items forged out of metal like there is no tomorrow. Established in 1770, the forge is powered by two waterwheels situated in the central room of the building, although the smaller storage room might be the major point of interest with its unique set of tools. One such tool is a hammer-like device called a repač, and whilst we aren t entirely sure what it does we wouldn t want to get a limb caught in it. QSkomarje 2 Zreče Lake Created in the year 2000, Zreče Lake is made up of two very distinct parts. The larger lower part is all aesthetics, glistening water backed by lush greenery and perfect for idly watching a summer s day go by. The upper part is entirely overgrown and has been given over to nature, specifically set aside for spawning. The lake itself is full of engineering quirks, whether it is the clay-sealed bottom or uncovered walls. When the sun is signing we recommend bringing a book and a beer or two - you ll find it hard to leave. Brinjeva Gora Brinjeva Gora is one of the most popular hills above Zreče, and evidence suggests that this has been the case for thousands and thousands of years now. One of the oldest high-altitude settle-ments around, the discoveries of archaeologists suggest that life was thriving here as far back as five thousand BC, long before In Your Pocket put together its first guide. By all accounts this was a good place to live back in the day. Plenty of Bronze Age artefacts have been discovered here, and its popularity means the paths and roads that lead up to the peak are more than serviceable. If you happen to be a bird, this will be your view of Zreče 20 Rogla-Pohorje In Your Pocket rogla-pohorje.inyourpocket.com

Zreče Lake was made at the turn of the new millennium, but with tranquility like this who cares about age? Church of St. Martin In the hills above Zreče lies the photogenic Church of St. Martin, although such buildings obviously weren t constructed for the benefit of snap-happy tourists. One of only five official stops on the Path of St. Martin in Europe, this church is the second oldest in the parish and has served the good people of Zaklova since the 14th century, when the busy monks from Žiče put their minds and hands together to build it. Gorenje pri Zrečah Not to be confused with the internationally recognised Slovene company of the same name, Gorenje is a small village just a 45-minute walk uphill from Zreče. Its present moniker only came about in 1955, when the post-war Yugoslav government decided that Sveta Kunigunda (St. Ku-nigunde) was a little too religious-sounding for their liking. The village is home to a number of small farms experiencing something of a renaissance, as well as the Church of St. Kunigunde, a 14th century house of worship with stunning views over the entire valley. Narrow Gauge Railway Museum Opened in 1892, the Poljčane - Slovenske Konjice narrow gauge railway track was built in order to connect the Maribor - Ljubljana route with the growing industry of the upper Dravinja Valley, and the line was extended to Zreče in years later the line was closed to its lack of sustainability, but those 41 years saw plenty of traffic both, both freight and human. A locomotive, passenger car and two freight cars are now proudly on display, along with a couple of small collections related to the history of the railway. Šrekl - Zajc Blacksmith s Forge What do you get when you combine the busy energy of the workshop with the quiet determination of the blacksmith? Ivan Šrekl and Ignac Zajc decided to find out exactly what in 2007, when Zajc s machinery was deconstructed and transported to Šrekl s workshop, and the two have joined forces to offer an insight into the handy work of the region. Located in Dobrovlje, the workshop runs to this day, and a healthy collection of blacksmith s tools are available to take a look at. Church of St. Giles Despite conjuring up images of a house of worship for Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans, this idyllic church some 397 metres above the sea has a history that goes much further back than an iconic American TV show of the 90s. The church was built in the 11th century and is mainly Roman with a number of Gothic elements. The main altar showcases an image of St. Giles (also known as Giles the hermit, the patron saint of beggars and more) as a Benedictine abbot with a hind at his feet, an image created in 1850 but renovated in the 20th century. Lušperk Castle Those of you with deep lungs and creative imaginations should absolutely make the steep trek up to what remains of Lušperk Castle, a mysterious citadel 607m above the sea. It isn t known who was responsible for the castle being built in this difficult location, but the first written mention of it comes from the words of Henrique of Lušperk in It is thought to have been abandoned as long ago as 1502, and time has erased the majority of what was once a mighty noble home. The views of the Dravinja valley are pretty spectacular however. 2017/

Oplotnica Oplotnica s renovated mansion - the centre of all activity in the town Agriculture dominates everyday life in Oplotnica, but then of course it does. This rural municipality on the southeastern slopes of Pohorje is a throwback to a simpler time, when life moved at a manageable pace, neighbours helped neighbours and time was something to be savoured. Having one of the nicest parks we ve seen in years certainly helps when it comes to making the most of what you have. Man first came to these parts forever ago, but the town itself wasn t mentioned in writing until Named after the delectable stream that runs through its centre (the Oplotniščica), Oplotnica belonged to the monks at the Žiče Charterhouse all the way up until 1782, when Emperor Jozef II decided to abolish the monastery. Oplotnica was free, and the following century saw industry develop in the region and the the population grew and grew. The town itself revolves around that gorgeous park and the town square that nestles next to it, a square that simultaneously transports you back to times gone by whilst accentuating the desire to maintain and respect traditions that younger generations bring to the table. Oplotnica is as off the beaten track as it gets, but this shouldn t create any isolated images in your mind. This is a thriving town with a surprisingly young population and plans to continuing moving forward in the modern age, and when it all gets too much they have a majestic park to calm down in. Oplotnica Park The nature of travel writing means that we have been in our fair share of parks over the years, but as far as village parks go they don t come much better than the small patch of land in the middle of Oplotnica. A small stream runs through the park that glistens in the summer sun, your strolling em-bellished by the shade of the perfectly-placed trees that dot the landscape. The park was built in 1924 on property owned by the Windisch-Grätz nobles, and was known in the community for being where the laundry took place. It was more than just a spot to wash clothes however, as the laundry became a hotbed of local gossip and also a place for washing intestines following the slaughter of cattle, although it is best to forget that last point. Take a good book and relax, you won t want to leave here in a hurry. 24 Rogla-Pohorje In Your Pocket rogla-pohorje.inyourpocket.com

Oplotnica SIGHTSEEING Oplotnica Mansion Once the economic centre of the town, the Oplotnica Mansion is now an integral part of the town square and one revelling in recent renovations. Built between 1621 and 1631, the mansion has always been in use regardless of its aesthetic state, but the recent work has done its facade the world of good. Numerous rooms throughout serve numerous functions, from a shared kitchen to meeting rooms to wine tasting and more, and the third floor is home to Oplotnica s music school. Arguably the most striking element of the mansion is the small chapel on the second floor, full with some of the finest stucco decorations in all of Slovenia. Elsewhere we find numerous works of art and all manner of artefacts from Oplotnica s history. The building (and chapel) are still used for celebrations of various kinds, and for tours one must call ahead. Oplotnica Gorge Does it get much better than the alliance of streaming water, rocky crags and blissful isolation? Oplotnica gorge isn t quite as isolated as it seems, lying just off the road after all, but once you ve navigated the paths and short bridges you would be forgiven for thinking you re a million miles from civilisation. The gorge is intended to preserve the natural environment in the Oplotnica area, and the path from the road to the gorge is broken up with educational signs and occasional workshops. PARTOVEC POND Located in the hills above Oplotnica, Partovec Pond is very much a spot with two stories to tell. On the face of it the pond is another tranquil body of water in this delightful TIC OPLOTNICA QGoriška cesta 4, tel +386 (0) , obcina@ oplotnica.si, Open 08:00-14:00, Weds 08:00-16:00. Closed Fri - Sun. region, another fine spot to spend an afternoon with your toes in the water. The vacation house is the very definition of tranquility too, perfect for those looking to get away from it all. Partovec has a dark history however, as it was here that a number of German prisoners of war were murdered at the end of World War Two. Church of the Mother of God at Prihova Legend has it that the local folk were inspired to build a church on this spot when a cherry tree blossomed here on Christmas, and if that doesn t inspire one to erect a house of worship we don t know what will. The church was built in the middle of the 15th century, and the five plus centuries since have seen consistent additions and evolutions, completed by the introduction of the church organs in the year Church of St. John the Baptist Despite the first written record of this church coming the late 15th century, some believe that the history of the house of worship stretches even further back, citing the 12th century as the time of its beginning. What isn t up for debate is the fact that the original church was brought down due to its poor state, and the rebuilt house of God is thus one of the largest in the region. - It is difficult to beat the comfort and contentment of the Slovenian countryside /

Oplotnica Church of St. Nicholas Churches tend to be houses of superstition, and there is no more superstitious facade in the Oplotnica area than the faded fresco of St. Christopher at the Church of St. Nicholas. Legend has it that by gazing up at this fresco the local people guaranteed that they would avoid an unfortunate death that day, and whilst conventional wisdom suggests it takes more than looking at a fresco to survive, the threat of death is too serious to avoid. The church itself is from the first half of the 14th century and is best known for a painting of Oljska Gora from Well, that and the whole death avoidance thing. ACTIVITIES Pesek Cottage Isolated from both the hustle and the bustle of the skiing crowd, Pesek is as hiking-friendly as an accommodation option is going to get. A number of paths lead off from this spot, and in summer there is even the option to rest your legs and explore the area on horseback. Pesek has 40 beds available, and its kitchen is also famous for its game specialties. RESTAURANTS GOSTILNA POZNE A municipality of less than 4,000 people isn t going to come with a huge variety of dining options, but for those who find themselves with rumbling stomachs in Oplotnica, Gostilna Pozne is the place to go. Plenty of space and friendly service awaits in spades, with a varied menu and plenty of drink options available alongside. No thrills, but who needs thrills when food is on the table? DOMAČIJA FORBAR Home-made food in a comforting tourist farm environment is very difficult to beat, and Domačija Forbar adds another compelling argument for that. 27 Vitanje Another bird s eye view of a gorgeous village - but spot the futuristic square peg If Vitanje gives you the feeling of a market town from the halcyon days, don t fret - that is exactly what this delightful little place is. Vitanje has a history as long as a monthly shopping list, and has been a thriving market town since way back in the mid-13th century. It was given that title in 1306, meaning our delightful Vitanje has been ploughing its charming furrow for over 700 years. Slovenes have been here even longer, coming into the area as part of the Slavic migration in the 6th century, and by the 11th century Vitanje was the administrative centre of the wider region, thanks in no part to the influence of the Bishops of Krško. The rolling countryside, the lazy hills, the condensed town centre and the community atmosphere combine to make Vitanje the ideal market town, surrounded by gorgeous aesthetics and imbued with a sense of trust and security. KSEVT sticks out like a sore thumb in all of this, but then a modernist cultural centre dedicated to an ahead-of-his-time aeronautics pioneer is always going to be. KSEVT was built in 2012 and houses everything you ever needed to know about Herman Potočnik and more. Potočnik s mother was from the town, and KSEVT is well on its way to being a beacon of pride for Vitanje s modern day inhabitants. TIC VITANJE QGrajski trg 1, tel +386 (0) , info@vitanje.si, Open 08:00-14:00, Weds 08:00-16:00. Closed Tue, Thur, Sat and Sun. So if the combination of sleepy countryside contentment and space-age technological innovation sounds like a peculiar mix, come to Vitanje to check it out for yourself. SIGHTSEEING Beškovnik s Granary A short drive outside of Vitanje is the small settlement of Šentvid, and it is here that we find a lovingly restored farmhouse from the early 19th century just waiting to be discovered. Beškovnik s Granary is as well-preserved as an old dwelling gets, with a host of old equipment and tools on show. The wooden house is accompanied by a wooden granary on top of a stone cellar, where the folk of yesteryear stored food from the first harvest, as well as a farmer s retirement home and outhouse. A Roman burial ground and small chapel are also found nearby. This is as traditional as it is going to get. Church of St. Peter and Paul Also known locally as the winter church, the Parish Church of St. Peter and Paul holds regular services between All Saints Day and Easter, and it can arguably lay claim to being the most delightful structure in the town. The church is believed to have been constructed at the beginning of the 11th century, although the appearance evolved from Romanesque to Gothic in the 15th century. The interior was restored as recently as the early 1970s. The Church of St. Peter and Paul shares parish duties with the summer church Hriberca,, a unique state of affairs in the country. 2017/

Vitanje may be small, but it packs one mighty punch Church of the Mother of God Hriberca The winter church obviously has a summer church equivalent, and that comes in the shape of the Church of the Mother of God Hriberca. This church was built in the mid- 18th century in the baroque style, although the exterior doesn t quite tell this story. The interior wears its baroque influence on its sleeve however. Regular services are held here between Easter and All Saints Day, at which point the focus turns to the winter church. Stari Grad Vitanje It is difficult to imagine a more romantic location for the ruins of a castle, but with that romance comes a certain inaccessibility that was vital for noble homes such as this in the long, long ago. Vitanje s most historic attraction, the Old Castle was first mentioned in 1140 but is thought to have been built in the 11th century by the bishops of Krško. The history of the castle is predictably tumultuous, with a number of owners taking turns to neglect and take care of the picturesque plot, with an earthquake in 1201 not helping matters. By the 17th century, the castle had been abandoned. Little remains outside of some rather picturesque ruins, but signs of the revolutionary methods of its builders remain. Rocks were incorporated into the defensive system of the castle in a method that was ahead of its time, and the Romanesque fillings between stone gaps and the light slots between barriers make this a unique castle in a country full of identikit stately homes. Novi Grad Vitanje The presence of an Old Castle in the Vitanje area suggests the existence of a newer one, and the imaginatively titled Novi Grad can be found not far from the town centre. The name New Castle is somewhat misleading though, as it was built in the 13th century and first mentioned in It too was abandoned later on in life, after being struck by lightning and setting on fire in If that isn t bad luck, we don t know what is. Accessing these ruins is difficult, but the hardy among you will be more than up for the challenge. Farmer s Retirement House Beškovnik s Granary is well worth a visit on its own, but this fascinating retirement house for the farmer is an added bonus. The house was constructed in 1830, and its main purpose was to provide a home for the previous owners of the farm during the handing over process, somewhere for the elders to reside whilst the torch was passed on to the next generation. The kids were to sign an agreement that stated that they would care for the previous owners until death, providing basic food and board at the very least. It wasn t luxurious but it didn t need to be. Today the house is used for various events and workshops. Old Sawmill Once upon a time there were a whopping 32 water-powered stone sawmills along the Hudinja River, to go with six on its Jesenica counterpart, and prior to World War Two this area was exporting an impressive 100 wagons of wood every year. Time eventually caught up on the mills however, and modern technology left many of them to the wayside. One of the largest sawmills on the Hudinja River is open for viewing however, with a view to opening a museum here in the future. Mills such as this one were vital the development of the town, and proper respect will surely be paid in time. RESTAURANTS GOSTILNA KUZMAN Those expecting a town of less than 2,500 people to have a huge variety of food and accommodation options should probably head back to earth, although after an afternoon in KSEVT one can understand such lofty ideas. Gostilna Kuzman is your option for refreshment in the small town, and whilst the town may not have a huge amount of choice it doesn t really need it - Kuzman is more than enough. The gostilna offers a host of house specialties that are complimented by fine wines, making this a great spot for a business lunch. It also offers accommodation, for those looking to spend a bit more time in Vitanje. QNa vasi 20, tel +386 (0) Rogla-Pohorje In Your Pocket rogla-pohorje.inyourpocket.com

Vitanje KSEVT (Cultural Centre of European Space Technologies) As card-carrying space geeks you simply can t understand our excitement at getting to visit KSEVT. The Cultural Centre of European Space Technologies is an institution dedicated to scientists, engineers and astronomers who have given their lives and intellect to exploring the galaxy in the past, the present and event the future. One such man s mother was born in Vitanje, and that man is honoured in the most respectful of ways at KSEVT. Herman Potočnik-Noordung ( ) may not be a household name, but his influence in the science of astronautics can t be denied. It was Potočnik who first published a book putting forward solutions for living and traveling in space, a textbook that heavily influenced the great minds of the American and Soviet space programs. This futuristic building sticks out like a sore thumb in the relatively rural surrounds of Vitanje, but the grandiose nature of its ambition deserves exploration alone. KSEVT is hoping to become something of a centre of international scientific activity, bringing great minds from all over the world together to brainstorm in the nonemore-relaxing surroundings of beautiful Vitanje. The centre also contains a number of temporary exhibitions and a permanent one that goes in-depth on the life and work of Herman Potočnik, along with further details on Slovenia s input into the vital subject of space exploration. There is also a delightful showing of the first ever science fiction film, the Russian-made Travel to the Moon, made in It is scarily accurate. The building itself is something of an architectural marvel, based loosely on Potočnik s habitable wheel design from his book. It also has a community hall and three glass offices that are available for hiring out, be it for workshops, concerts, celebrations or any other ideas you may have. The centre also holds many workshops for young people from the region. But in truth it is the jaw-dropping immensity of the universe that will likely draw visitors to KSEVT, as curious tourists learn more and more about the importance of Herman Potočnik to the wonderful world of space exploration. Introducing culture to space and the cosmos to art is no laughing matter, and this enchanting building is leading the rest of the world on this front. 30 Activities Again guys, stop checking the map and enjoy all that gorgeous countryside that surrounds you EDUCATIONAL PATHS OPLOTNICA GORGE EDUCATIONAL PATH Once home to more than 30 saws and mills, the busy-bodies of this path have gone but many varied species of plant remain. A 1.1km long thematic path has been installed with the purpose of preserving the natural environment, an environment that has long been vital for local people. The lives of the people of the region are detailed on a number of boards throughout the path, and there are also access points to the water, a number of resting benches and an observation point. QOplotnica ZREČE WATER PATH Zreče s history is indelibly linked to water, and it was glorious H2O that provided the municipality with stability and sustainability in the early days. It is only natural then that a thematic path be constructed to tell the story of Zreče s water, a story that is told over eight information boards through the past and the present to the future. The natural and cultural heritage of the town is brought to life via a restored well at the train station, the Zreče Lake and much more. QZreče THE LITTLE DRAGON S FOREST EDUCATIONAL PATH A two-hour jaunt around 12 thematic boards, the Little Dragon s Forest Educational Path covers some 3km and provides eye-popping views of the Dravinja Valley accentuated by the forests of Pohorje. The path covers the foot of the Konjiška Mountain above Slovenske Konjice, and begins near the Pod Goro school in town. QSlovenske Konjice PETELINJEK EDUCATIONAL PATH You don t get given an award for most beautiful regional educational path without good reason, and the Petelinjek Educational Path more than lives up to its 2012 award. Generally intended for primary and secondary school students, this 2km path features 13 thematic posts where one can learn all about life in the ponds, swamps, meadows and forests that surround the path. It isn t all about learning though, and this is as pleasant a stroll as one would hope to find. QSlovenske Konjice SPORTS FISHING AT JERNEJČEK POND We ve never been particularly good at the sport, but there aren t many more relaxing activities than a spot of fishing on a summer s afternoon. Those looking to spend the day by the water waiting for something to bite should head to Jernejček Pond, where dusk till dawn fishing is possible between March and October, between Wednesday and Sunday. Carp, pike, zander, roach and more are waiting to be snagged, in a setting that is as idyllic as fishing gets. For more information head to the website. Qrdslbistrica-drustvo.si ZLATI GRIČ GOLF In a nation full of idyllic golf courses, the vineyards that snake in and around Zlati Grič s course may well take the biscuit. This nine-hole, 2500m course is open between March and November (which makes sense, because who wants to play golf in winter?) and is challenging enough to provide a test for even the most enthusiastic putters. A brook in the middle of the course keeps the attention of the less talented, although they can also book themselves into one of the many instructional courses available at Zlati Grič. A number of excellent wines can be purchased in the club house, although drinking and golfing isn t exactly recommended. Seeing Konjice in all its glory from the sky is an incredible experience, as the lush greenery snakes in and out of the small towns and villages. The airport is home to the Slovenske Konjice Aeroclub, who organise an annual aircraft meeting and have done so since KIDS MINI ZOO LAND We were surprised to learn that there was a zoo - or mini zoo, as it is officially billed - on the outskirts of Slovenske Konjice. But not only is the place real, if we had been living in Slovenia between the ages of seven and eleven, this is definitely where we would have wanted our parents to take us to celebrate our birthday. Don t expect to see any lions, elephants or mountain gorillas around here, but the reptile house does include some large snakes and an alligator (or perhaps crocodile, we always get those two confused), and outside you ll find a few wallabies and a laid-back little monkey named Ficko, who comes close enough that visitors are tempted to ignore the sign warning against touching him. If you or the kids would like to pet some animals, there s a barnyard area in the back fully stocked with goats, sheep, cows, rabbits and more, as well as riding ponies. The petting zoo also contains the most unusual part of this already unusual place, a scale sized recreation of a town in the American wild west - complete with gunfighters at the saloon, police drinking whiskey and packs of Slovene children celebrating birthdays.
