ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN Valmiera Tourist Information Centre in cooperation with Kocēni, Burtnieki and Beverīna Municipalities invites to take part in the tourism campaign Centennial treasures!

Tourism campaign Centennial treasures follows the principles and rules established by the worldwide known game Geocaching. You can search for the hidden treasures by finding their coordinates on www.

2 ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN Valmiera Tourist Information Centre in cooperation with Kocēni, Burtnieki and Beverīna Municipalities invites to take part in the tourism campaign Centennial treasures! As Latvia s centennial is approaching, we invite you to travel around Valmiera and its vicinity, in search for the hidden treasures. Tourism campaign Centennial treasures follows the principles and rules established by the worldwide known game Geocaching. You can search for the hidden treasures by finding their coordinates on or by following the clues and hints given in the tourism brochure on how to find them. Your task at the campaign is to find the geocaches in popular sightseeing places and objects in Valmiera city and Kocēni, Burtnieki, Beverīna Municipalities. Geocaches can be identified as boxes or capsules, in which you will find a pencil, a notebook and some items that can be exchanged. FOR YOUR ATTENTION! While looking for a geocache, try not to attract to yourself attention of people around you. We encourage you to look for them while no one is looking at you. This way you will make sure that a geocache remains hidden for others; After you have found it, please put it back exactly where you found it. Not next to it or in a seemingly better place! Each geocache has precise coordinates and only the person which initially put it there can change the location by also changing the information in the Geocaching website; After finding a geocache, please register in the journal (write your name or nickname and the date you found it); If you take something for the geocache, please remember to put something back in exchange; It is forbidden to leave food, used lottery tickets, cigarettes or any trash in the boxes or capsules. We encourage not to put items that can be affected by moisture, as the boxes and capsules are not sealed and water resistant. Please note that any food items left in the boxes and capsules, particularly the ones hidden in forests, can attract wild animals, which can dig out and damage the container; Travelbugs and geocoins are items with a unique ID. If you are a beginner and you are not sure if you will enjoy this game, we suggest not taking them. However, if you do, please register them on When you find the next cache, please leave it there. By no means keep it by yourself, as the purpose of these items is to be moved from one place to another. SUGGESTIONS FOR SUCCESSFUL GEOCACHING Find the right place make sure you re not being watched find the cache once again make sure nobody is watching you register in the journal (make it readable!) don t forget to make sure you re not being watched cover it, if necessary if somebody is watching you, but you still want to register the cache, use a divertive strategy to distract them or pretend that you still are looking for it in another place. TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CAMPAIGN, YOU NEED: To receive a brochure; To find at least 10 out of 20 caches included in the campaign; To fill in the brochure by describing the treasure you found in each cache; If you are a registered user at Geocaching, please register your findings on as well. If you have fulfilled the requirements, please deliver the brochure in person or send it by post to the Valmiera Tourist Information Centre (Rīgas iela 10, Valmiera, LV-4201) by November 3, 2017 (incl.). If a cache is missing and you cannot find it, please inform us through or get in touch with the Valmiera Tourist Information Centre! The campaign will end on November 10, 2017, when lucky winners will be randomly chosen and will receive prizes from tourism enterprises in Valmiera and Kocēni, Burtnieki and Beverīna Municipalities. Gauja River Steep Banks Leisure Park, Valmiera Gauja River Steep Banks is one of the most picturesque places in Valmiera, beloved not only by locals, but also tourists since 1870s.

Many sand martins and beautiful demoiselles have chosen Steep Banks as their habitat. Next to Steep Banks the Park of Senses is located. Hint to find the cache: Wild animal feeder, GPS: 57.53995, 25.

3 VALMIERA 1. Herbal Garden of the Valmiera Museum Pilskalna iela 2, In 2010 within the framework of the project Landscape Along the Gauja River - Revitalization of Historical Centre of Valmiera an herbal garden of the Valmiera Museum was created. It was taken into consideration that it is a garden by a dwelling house (18th-19th century), hence plants and herbs planted there should have not only curing qualities, but also should serve the kitchen needs and decorative purposes of a household from that period. The herbal garden is open to visitors 24/7 and one can find there more than 150 different plants and herbs. The Valmiera Museum offers a special programme Herbs and Vulnerary plants, available also in English. Bachelors Park Valmiera Bachelors Park (Vecpuišu parks) in Valmiera is closely connected with special ocassions in the development of the city and establishment of an independent Latvia. In 1914 eight well-known and respected unmarried gentlemen bought a plot of land to create a public park with a pavillion here. On November 20, 1918 in this place the flag of newly independent Latvia was honoured, also several gatherings and concerts took place. Currently the concert hall Valmiera together with the restaurant Vecpuisis is located in the pavillion. This park with its old trees is one of the most romantic places in Valmiera. Paegles street, GPS: , Valmiera State Gymnasium Leona Paegles iela 40 The building of the Valmiera State Gymnasium was built from 1902 until 1903 (architect Aleksejs Kīzelbašs). Until 1917 it accommodated the Teachers Seminary, but since 1920 it is used by the Valmiera State Gymnasium. Many great and famous persons either have worked or studied here, e.g., painter G. Klucis, writer L. Paegle and others. In older times the building had an onion shape dome in the middle, typical to orthodox churches, and it has a shape of the letter E when viewed from above, which some associate with the word Evangel. Next to the school building an art gallery Ledus pagrabs offering various thematic art exhibitions and a garden of sculptures is located. Hint to find the cache: UH-100. In 2013 the company expanded its operation by acquiring a production plant in the United Kingdom and in 2014 in the USA. Its products have been used in the ceiling panels of the new Terminal 2 of Heathrow Airport, in the roof of the Vodafone Arena stadium in Turkey. KOCĒNI 6. Neiken s Open Air Stage Dikļi In summer of 1864 in Dikļi (Kocēni Municipality) the first Latvian Song festival took place.

Currently the magnificient aura from the joy of singing and the power of a song can be felt at the Song festival promenade. This is a beloved meeting and leisure place for locals.

4 KOCĒNI 6. Neiken s Open Air Stage Dikļi In summer of 1864 in Dikļi (Kocēni Municipality) the first Latvian Song festival took place. It was organized by the famous Juris Neikens, who was a writer, a teacher and a priest. Currently the magnificient aura from the joy of singing and the power of a song can be felt at the Song festival promenade. This is a beloved meeting and leisure place for locals. Those interesting in more active leisure can rent from VaidavEžu laivas a boat or a SUP board to enjoy the lake from a completely different angle. Hint to find the cache: A bridge. GPS: , Kokmuiža stone wall byre Jāņa Ķenča iela 2, Kocēni The impressive two-storey byre was built at the end of the 19th century in It has been built from boulders and red bricks, and in the past it used to have a wooden ceiling, which currently, due to safety reasons, has been removed. Hint to find the cache: Lightning. Magnetic. GPS: , House of Marta from Zilaiskalns Zāžēni, Zilākalna pagasts Marta from Zilaisklans, real name Marta Elza Rācene ( ), once used to live not far away from the Zāžēni house. Many believe that Zilaiskalns had played a significant role for Marta to understand the strength of her powers. The fact that Marta was a unique person with special abilities proves stories of several people. Furthermore, she has been included in the list of world s seven most famous healers. Burtnieki Centre Channel Burtnieki Burtnieki Centre Channel is located in Burtnieki, a picturesque village by the lake.

More than 20 fish species can be found in the lake and two Natura 2000 territories lie on its banks. 23 small rivers flow into the lake and only one 95 km long Salaca River flows out of it.

GPS: , Ēvele Manor Park Ēvele Ēvele (Burtnieki Municipality) manor granary, built in 1793, is an architectural monument of a national significance, as well as notable example of classicism architecture, together with the 5,7 ha big manor park and a pond creating a beautiful historical landscape. Within the park an open-air stage is located. This place has an interesting history, which is connected with the founding of Ēvele. In 1566 Berend von Hoevel gave the knight s manor Wolfart as a gift to his cousin Melchior von Hoevel. The manor was renamed after him and, hence, got the name Ēvele Manor. Nowadays the granary accommodates an exhibition hall and a gathering place, which during warmer season can be used for conference, event and exhibition purposes. Burtnieki Centre Channel Burtnieki Burtnieki Centre Channel is located in Burtnieki, a picturesque village by the lake. Burtnieki Lake is the fourth biggest lake in Latvia and it is the only lake which has naturally created rock outcrops on its banks. More than 20 fish species can be found in the lake and two Natura 2000 territories lie on its banks. 23 small rivers flow into the lake and only one 95 km long Salaca River flows out of it. There is a nature trail-maze, mini golf, trampolines, a catapult, mini-farm, mini-zoo, rock-climbing wall, BMX track, BMX museum, picnic areas, a golf course, driving range, tennis courts, as well as a guest house for celebrations and seminars, SPA sauna and a pool. GPS: , Vecate boat base Boat base, Vecates pagasts, , info@ezerupe.lv Not far away from Vecate begins the Salaca River, which is the only river flowing out of the Burtnieki Lake. Salaca is the pride of Northern Vidzeme, tempting those tired of everyday routine to relax and enjoy the beauty of its surroundings and great variety of wildlife at its banks. In the vicinity of Vecate Parish one can find some of the best preserved Stone Age settlements in Europe Kaulēnkalns and Riņņukalns Stone Age settlements. Hint to find the cache: A single tree behind the boat base. GPS: , Manor Park by the Valmiermuižas alus brewery Dzirnavu iela 2, Valmiermuiža, , info@valmiermuiza.lv For ages everything done at the Valmiermuiža Manor was done ambitiously and solid, as we can witness from the Manor House, tower and its park with the majestic gates. Currently the Valmiermuižas alus brewery (Valmiermuiža beer brewery) has taken over it, where natural, live beer is brewed and in its kitchens the real, Flavour of Latvian nature is created. Like in old days, they go to neighbouring farmers to ask for seasonal products with which to feast their guests, as once, during the manor times, it was done. BEVERĪNA 16. Mūrmuiža fortification tower Mūrmuiža The fortification tower in Mūrmuiža (Beverīna Municipality) is a unique renaissance architecture monument. It has been rebuilt for several times.

First floor could be reached by stairs located outside of the building.

The building does not have loopholes typical to other fortification towers. Hint to find the cache: Extension, under the roof in the corner. GPS: 57.47497, 25.49102 17.

It also accommodates a small hydropower station. Next to the brewery a small sales stand and a picnic area is located. On the other side of the river the Abuls Nature Trail begins.

From Brenguļi one can walk all the way to the place, where Abuls flows into the Gauja River and return there through Jaunbrenguļi and Vecbrenguļi manor complexes.

6 BEVERĪNA 16. Mūrmuiža fortification tower Mūrmuiža The fortification tower in Mūrmuiža (Beverīna Municipality) is a unique renaissance architecture monument. It has been rebuilt for several times. Initially the ground floor had windows, which later were walled up. There used to be a fireplace, which means that people used to live in there. First floor could be reached by stairs located outside of the building. The tower has been used for several purposes as a dwelling house, granary, distillery, warehouse, causing a lot of confusion and contradiction. The building does not have loopholes typical to other fortification towers. Hint to find the cache: Extension, under the roof in the corner. GPS: , Abuls path from the Brenguļi brewery Brenguļi Brenguļi (Beverīna Municipality) brewery operates here since It is located in an old building at the banks of the Abuls River. It also accommodates a small hydropower station. Next to the brewery a small sales stand and a picnic area is located. On the other side of the river the Abuls Nature Trail begins. It is approximately 11 km long, stretching through forests, plains and manor complexes located on the left side of the Abuls River. From Brenguļi one can walk all the way to the place, where Abuls flows into the Gauja River and return there through Jaunbrenguļi and Vecbrenguļi manor complexes. The trail is marked with a white and blue marking. Hint to find the cache: A maple before a clearing. 10 steps towards the river. GPS: , More information on other sightseeing objects in Beverīna Municipality can be found on Rūtiņu maple By the Rūtiņu house, Trikātas pagasts Rūtiņu maple is the biggest (according to its girth) maple tree not only in Latvia, but also in the Baltic States. Its girth has been measured at 6,40 m. It is 24 m high and the branch-span can reach 11 m. It is more than 150 years old. It got its name from the Rūtiņu house, located next to the tree, whose owner treats the tree with respect and dignity. Hint to find the cache: A log by the shed. GPS: , Trikāta Castle ruins Trikāta The land of Trikāta was first mentioned in the Livonian Chronicles of Henry in It can be concluded that Trikāta was closely connected with the legendary Beverīna Castle. In other documents Trikāta (Trikaten) Livonian Order Castle was first mentioned in 1429, when it served as the residence of the Vogt. During the Northern War Russians burned down the castle and ever since it has not been rebuilt. Nowadays the Trikāta Castle ruins accommodate an open-air stage. Hint to find the cache: Hillfort square, first step. GPS: , Siltumnīca Kalnķeņģi, Kauguru pagasts, , Inspiration is being grown in the Siltumnīcā (Greenhouse). It is a creative stop in a rural environment, where concerts, movie evenings, creative workshops, philosophical and literary meetings, as well as weddings and other festivities are organized and celebrated. The owners offer to organize weddings, starting from ideas up to full catering services, decorations, accommodation, audio technical equipment and everything else to make this special occasion unforgettable.
