CERUDA SERBIA CEnter for RUral Development and Applied learning Jazak a pilot and lighthouse project for Serbia and the Balkans realized by concerned local and Western European experts The Jazak Learning Center CERUDA DOO aims at establishing a platform for the sustainable development of rural Serbia. This helps to stop rural depopulation and brain drain further new job opportunities, especially in the rural area develop the use of modern agriculture and food processing for export introduce modern, clean technologies to restore and modernize local infrastructure
Developing the Rural Areas of Serbia CERUDA Center for Rural Development and Applied Learning In the spring of 2014, a group of European development experts from different fields teamed up to establish CERUDA. Their common aim is to stimulate and reactivate rural areas of the Balkans, to promote agro-economic development strategies, and to operate learning centers in sustainable applied education. Serbia s economic development is still far behind that of EU countries, even though it is located between Central and Southeast Europe. As other countries in the Balkans, Serbia suffers from the impact of dramatic political change in the past 25 years, such as the Yugoslav wars and the transition from a completely controlled socialism to an open democratic society. Serbia is facing an enormous brain drain, particularly of well-educated young people, due to massively lower economic potential compared with neighboring countries and slow political change. The population declined dramatically in the last two decades. Villages are abandoned, and physical and institutional infrastructures are falling apart because migration predominantly affects the rural areas. This accelerates the vicious circle of brain drain and rural unemployment as well as the devastation of arable land. Jazak Village In order to counteract these challenges, experts in sustainability from Austria, Germany, France, Serbia, and Switzerland joined forces to found a center for applied learning in the village of Jazak in Northern Serbia. Its purpose is the education and training in its facilities of different target groups, mainly in the topics local organic agriculture, food processing, energy-efficient construction, renovation of buildings and sustainable use of resources and technology Jazak is ideally located close to the airport, Belgrade and Novi Sad
A Learning center in the center of a village Become a part of a rural village community The aim of CERUDA is based on sustainable development and permanent education elements often missing in the Balkans. To promote change and stimulate improved living conditions, our center is placed in the heart of the village. Beside other activities, we want to turn a typical rural into a pilot village by introducing sustainable practices (infrastructure, energy, water, waste management, community building, organic farming, food manufacturing, etc.). Here the aim is to become more resilient by reducing rural exodus, creating new job opportunities, and giving hope for future prosperity, improved social life, and accelerated economic development. Jazak is nothing more than typical Our show case village is one of thousand similar ones in and around Serbia. Jazak faces similar migration and degradation patterns as surrounding villages. It is ideally located on the southern slopes of the mountain ridge and national park of Fruška Gora, just 30 km from Novi Sad, 60 km from Belgrade, and 45 km from the airport. It has a very diversified agriculture; from the wooden hillside, the community land reaches out into the vast and fruitful planes of Vojvodina. The national park of Fruška Gora, nearby hot springs, and other attractions provide the potential to develop a soft, green tourism. our farmhouse compound Education and development of Europe s backyard The CERUDA project aims to improve lifting standards, reduce migration, and fight unemployment, not abroad but in poorer outskirts of Europe, parts of our own European culture and history. Our approach is threefold: Build an education center for young adults and create a learning platform for local, regional, and international groups and individuals. Realize projects in agriculture/food processing, application and maintenance of sustainable technologies and methods. Arrange for teach the teachers programs, with exchange offers in Western European organic businesses (e.g. the Herrmannsdorfer Landwerkstätten in Bavaria). All activities are based on the revival of local material flows and production cycles and helping to create sustainable livelihood and entrepreneurship for the populace. The CERUDA partners form a pool of international expertise.

Jazak Center aerial view with limits of the site Our land stretches from the village settlements upwards to fruit plantations and further to the boarders of the national park of Fruška Gora, a largely untouched natural wilderness, forming an ideal background for a sustainability-oriented education and development center. upper land: 5500 m 2 gras & bushes lower land: 3600 m 2 with old farmhouse, stables and barns 0 50m 100m 150m 200m
Construction Site of Jazak Education Center ❶ First Development Phase (2015): The Old Farm House with stables and barns was already refurbished in 2015, including accommodations for 12, a small seminar and two office rooms, bathrooms w/showers, side rooms for recreation and work, an open terrace and half-closed pergola. Re-arrangement of the courtyard allows for new infrastructure (drinking water, wastewater, heating, electricity, modern office equipment with telephone, internet, etc.). Work was completed by December ❷ Second Development Phase (2016/17): To become fully operational for activities and seminars, the following additional constructions are planned: A kitchen, dining & meeting house of 120 m 2 with porch, fire place, and bath rooms with internal/external access Two guest houses for 24 visitors, built into the slope of the terrain, with veranda, roof windows, and full sanitary equipment. A seminar building for up to 50 participants, including restrooms, wide verandas with multi-functional areas for small groups. The buildings follow the traditional local style of wood constructions and are equipped with modern heat pumps for cooling & heating. We use sustainable construction material for insulation, in- and outsight design. ❸ ❷ ❸ Third development phase: New guesthouses including garden terraces to accommodate additional visitors shall be built in the following years. In this upper part of our land we also plan for a solar energy park, and agricultural test grounds. W N E ❶ S asphalted external parking space, authorized by the community
Jazak Center: the new kitchen/dining & seminar buildings The construction of the new kitchen- diningmeeting house is of prior importance since it should be operational in the summer of With a comfortable seating capacity of up to 60 people, it will immediately allow seminar activities, also for bigger groups The new separate seminar building, again with a capacity up to 60 people, shall be realized afterwards if the financial situation allows it. All new constructions follow the traditional rural building stile of Serbia
Jazak Center: new accommodation buildings The first guesthouses in the lower part of the site add 24 beds to the 12 already existing in the old farmhouse. The houses are inconspicuously built into the sloping landscape, surrounded with bushes and trees, and including roof lightening, and modern interior fittings. In the 3 d development phase, we shall add more terrace guesthouses in the upper part of our land, creating a new spirit of modern, environmental friendly garden village architecture.

Applied Learning & Projects Organization & Realization CERUDA DOO The international partner team of CERUDA is the owner of the center. Its members draft and initiate on a voluntary base the development projects, plan field and market studies, and design and realize learning programs for practical applications. The guiding model is the successful Hermannsdorfer Landwerkstätten in Bavaria (www. hermannsdorfer.de) with which we cooperate. Environmental Engineering Group (EEG) This NGO from Novi Sad partner of CERUDA is operating the learning center. EEG realizes its own courses, runs the vocational training program of CERUDA, and offers space to external parties on a low cost base. Involve local people All our study projects, local activities and courses include young university graduates, villagers and local farmers. In teaching the teachers programs, we prepare gifted youngsters for leadership positions.
