The Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife closed the year 2011 with 467 cruise ships and 828,590 cruise ship travellers, 80 and 88,568 more than last year, which translates into positive increases of 20 and 12 per cent respectively. Port by port, the Santa Cruz de Tenerife installation received 607,343 tourists of this category (+13%) which arrived on the island on 288 cruisers (+14%); 182,872 cruise travellers arrived at the port of Santa Cruz de La Palma on 122 liners (+6%); San Sebastian de La Gomera received 44 cruisers with 35,418 tourists and La Estaca, in the island of El Hierro, 2,957 cruise passengers on board of 13 cruisers. THE PORT OF SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE BEATS A NEW RECORD, SEVEN CRUISES IN A DAY The port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife beat again a new cruise traffic record hosting seven cruise ships in its facilities on December 2. This made that one of the ships, for obvious reasons of space and as a novelty, docked in Los Llanos. Specifically, Boudicca", "Costa Victoria", "MSC Fantasia", "Costa Serena", "Thomson Dream" and "Thomson Destiny" docked in Anaga dock, traditional location for cruise traffic. "La Belle de'l Adriatique" had to do it in Los Llanos, opposite the Council of Tenerife. In total there were 17,643 visitors, 13,150 of them cruise passengers and 4,493 crew members, who went pass the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. This figure also includes the home port operations of the ships of Thomson Cruises, the first heading to the Caribbean and the second making an Atlantic crossing. This was the most outstanding day, as far as number of ships is concerned, of 2011 at the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Likewise, different cruise ships also docked at the port of Tenerife on other emblematic dates such as December 25 and New Year s Day. Saga Pearl2 visited us on Christmas Day, and Oceana and Balmoral on December 31; while Independence of the Seas did it on Christmas Eve.

THE ECONOMIC IMPACT ON THE PROVINCE EXPECTED TO REACH 85 MILLION EUROS The Port Authority ended the year with a total number of over 1.2 million visitors, 830, 000 of them cruise passengers and the remaining 370,000 people, crew members of ships that will reach a total of 467 calls. The annual economic impact of this type of tourism in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is estimated at 85 million Euros. Queen Mary 2 returns.among the giant ships which visited us in 2011, we must highlight a new call of the cruise ship Queen Mary2, calling to port on November 3 and meeting Balmoral and the brothers Voyager and Liberty of the Seas. On that date, 10,000 cruise passengers and 4,000 crew members went pass the port. This was the second time that Queen Mary 2 visited us, dating its first call back to January 16, 2004 and, as then, it chose Tenerife as the first port to be visited in this return to the Canaries. SEATRADE 2011: MORE CRUISE SHIPS AND PASSENGERS ARRIVING AT OUR PORTS Cruise traffic within the ports under the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife registered in 2011 a new boost that will result in the increase, regarding both cruise passengers and ships, of the figures, already important, registered in Thus, this organization closed 2011 with 467 cruise ship calls, an increase of 20.7 percent compared to 2010, and 828,590 cruise passengers, which meant an increase of 12%. More in detail, the ports of La Gomera and La Palma reached 35,000 and 182,000 cruise passengers respectively, while Santa Cruz de Tenerife exceeded the 600 thousand passenger mark. The percentage growth of La Gomera is particularly noteworthy, increasing from 18 to 46 calls, thanks to the fact that large size boats can already dock and to the new facilities. Meanwhile Santa Cruz de La Palma was visited in 2011 by 182 thousand cruise passengers. These figures were, partly, the result of the many meetings held by the delegation of Tenerife with major shipping companies in the sector- P & O, MSC Crociere, AIDA and TUI Cruises, Fred.

Olsen Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises and Holland America- at the Seatrade 2011 which it attended as part of the firm Cruises in the Atlantic Islands, also composed of the ports of Las Palmas and Madeira. On the other hand, the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife was chosen by five shipping companies as home and shipping port for the season Specifically, Aida and Thomson will perform as home port, while Pullmantur, Costa Cruises and MSC will offer our island as shipping port in the Canary Islands. The first of these shipping companies will offer a ship of 2,000 passengers which will make five calls from April. In addition the other two companies present a joint offer of 500 beds for residents. In 2010 the economic impact of cruise traffic on our province was estimated at 79, 600,000 Euros. These expenses included fees and port services, overnight stays per home port, expenditure on tours, shopping, restaurants, etc. For 2011 the expenditure forecast related to cruise traffic was approximately of 85 million Euros. School surveys. 32 students of 3 º ESO from IES San Andrés conducted a series of surveys to the tourists visiting Tenerife on the cruise ships MSC Splendida and Thomson Spirit. This field work was done as an activity of the English Department in collaboration with the Port Authority. Among the questions raised, the origin of cruise passengers, the reason for their choice and general knowledge on Canary Islands and Tenerife in particular. The initiative included the development of a brochure on Tenerife which was given to those who had been polled. TWELVE TOURISM INFORMATION AGENTS WILL HELP CRUISE SHIP TRAVELLERS AT THE PORT OF TENERIFE A group of 12 tourism information agents will help cruise ship travellers when they reach Canarian ports, as the result of a collaboration agreement between various departments of the Government of the Canary Islands for the development of a training program with a commitment to hiring in the tourism sector.

This was highlighted by the Deputy Councillor for Tourism of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ricardo Fernández de la Puente Armas, Vice-President María del Mar Julios, President of the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Pedro Rodriguez Zaragoza, the Mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez, and the director of Promotur, María Méndez, during the presentation of the tourism agents at the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. As a result, 12 agents will be present in said port in six hour daily shifts and will carry out the same roles of welcoming and seeing off the tourists as in the airports, answering their requests for information and promoting the Canary Islands. Fernández de La Puente expressed his satisfaction at "being able to count on qualified personnel to promote the Canary Islands in both Ports with the aim of cultivating loyal clients and satisfying the growing demand by the tourist for this type of information. The Deputy Councillor for Tourism pointed out that "This initiative allows, to improve the level of employment with the creation of jobs and boost industrial and commercial activities related to maritime and port traffic since the port information agents, apart from providing advice to the traveller, will also carry out quality and well-being polls, as well as data collection in the field that may help the port s commercial area. As stated by the Government of the Canary Islands, the draft agreement between HECANSA, PROMOTUR and the Port Authorities of Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife establishes the actions that these tourism agents will undertake as part of this training program. These span from handing out information to travellers, as well as advice, recommendations, information on market segmentation, tourism products, destinations, accommodations, activities and experiences and drawing up quality and well-being polls, evaluating the clients and their loyalty as well as data collection in the field, which can help the ports commercial department to develop studies and analysis of the passengers commercial behaviour, implementing new commercial lines, etc.

FAVORABLE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT FOR THE ESPLANADE OF THE FUTURE CRUISE TERMINAL The Secretary of State for Climate Change published in the Official Gazette (BOE) of last June 1 the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) in favor of the project to widen the esplanade in the second alignment of the South Dock at the port of Tenerife, area where the future cruise terminal will be built. With the new infrastructure, it is aimed to improve the services associated with cruise ship traffic; services such as check in / check out, baggage handling, supply, and so on.
