2 u Maritime Gallery 2019 James Brereton Born in Derby, England, in 1954, Brereton is a self-taught painter who received his basic art training at Derby s Joseph Wright Art School. In 1979, he became a professional artist, specialising in marine subjects because of his life-long love of ships and the sea. He usually works in oils; his favourite subject being deep water sailing ships of the nineteenth century. His work has been influenced by artists such as Montague Dawson and Thomas Somerscales and by living for a time by the sea on the south coast of England. His work is recorded and illustrated in Denys Brook-Hart's book, 20th Century British Marine Painting and E.H.H. Archibald's Dictionary of Sea Painters of Europe and America. He has exhibited at the Royal Society of Marine Artists in London and in the West End, as well as many galleries throughout the country. His pictures can be found in private collections in the UK, Eire, Belgium, Oman, Japan and the USA. Robert Carter OAM, FASMA, FISMP Robert Carter was born in Sydney in He claims that his genes were soaked in salt water as his father was a shipwright and naval architect and his grandfather was a master mariner on British sailing ships. Growing up in Manly, on the foreshores of Sydney Harbour, during WWII he developed a strong interest in ships and the sea. He witnessed the Japanese submarine attack and crippled ships returning after the Battle of the Coral Sea and saw the Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary as troopships. Visiting the sailing ships Lawhill, Pamir and Kaiulani on their last visits to Sydney kindled his passion for sail driven ships. He spent three years in the Naval Reserve and became a career engineer with a forensic knowledge of ship construction and rigging essential for the creation of authentic marine paintings. His book Windjammers The Final Story encapsulates stories and anecdotes from more than 200 of the last mariners from the age of commercial sailing ships, illustrated with more than 40 of his paintings. Robert studied life and landscape painting at the Royal Art Society and in 1996 he founded the Australian Society of Marine Artists. He has been awarded the Order of Australia Medal for services to the arts, and the St Malo Medal by the International Association of Cape Horners in France. Robert s work has been commissioned by collectors worldwide and his paintings hang in the permanent collections of the Deutsches Schiffahrtsmuseum in Bremen and the Aland Maritime Museum in Mariehamn, Aland, Finland. In 1999 he was commissioned by the Aland Post to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the last voyage by the last two commercial sailing ships, carrying cargo from Australia to the UK, subsequently voted best stamp of the year. In 2016 his second book Paint Me a Ship was published. Harley Crossley Born in Southampton in 1936, Harley Crossley witnessed the magnificent ocean liners which were to have such an influence in his oil paintings. His use of a knife was ideally suited to the clean lines of classic ships such as liners, J-Class yachts or cargo ships. Attention to detail was vital and many happy hours were spent researching his subjects. In 2010 Cunard commissioned him to paint the official ship s portrait which hangs in the atrium of the Queen Elizabeth. Harley was also commissioned to execute a painting of the Hebridean Princess which was presented to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. During his later years Harley frequently travelled on board cruise ships, demonstrating his skill and talking about the ocean liners he loved. Three books of his original work have now been published. His death in 2013 was a sad loss to the worlds of art and of shipping. Patrick R. Donovan RSMA, ASMA Patrick Donovan began practising as a full-time artist in 1990 and specialises in marine and military subjects using watercolour, acrylic, pen, ink, and pencil. In 2011 he was elected a Member of the American Society of Marine Artists and in 2015 he was elected a Member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists. Patrick exhibited at the Royal Society of Marine Artists Annual Exhibition in 2015 and 2016 and has held solo and group exhibitions in France and the USA. He lives near Dover and finds inspiration in watching the ever-changing panorama and shipping on both sides of the Channel. He devotes great effort to research for both historical and modern subjects in order to be as technically accurate as possible. Preparatory work finds him searching archives or armed with a sketchbook and camera on board a variety of coastal and deep-sea craft, including lifeboats and pilot cutters. ROBERT G. LLOYD Born in 1968 and brought up on Merseyside, Robert has been influenced by ships and the sea from an early age. He used to stand on the banks of the River Mersey watching the ships entering and leaving the Port of Liverpool at high tide. After leaving school, Robert enrolled to become an officer cadet for Blue Star Line but his careers teacher told him there was no future in the Merchant Navy so he went to art college instead. After five years of study he entered the world of marketing and publicity but retained his interest in ships and the sea. He often completed paintings for exhibitions and the occasional commission and gradually, as his reputation spread, he decided to paint full-time and has never looked back. Robert has now gained a worldwide reputation for producing visually stunning and technically accurate paintings based on a wide variety of maritime subjects, from supertankers to superyachts both modern and historical. His paintings adorn boardrooms, museums, private and Royal collections in 38 countries and he is acknowledged as one of the leading maritime artists of our time. Jamie Medlin Born in Penryn, Cornwall, now living in Falmouth, Jamie trained as an illustrator at Falmouth School of Art and Design where he gained the technical knowledge and fine art skills that are the basis of his style today. After several years working as an illustrator in London and Australia, he returned home to his beloved Cornwall where he adapted his fine art skills to painting maritime subjects. Most of his early paintings were of the Falmouth working boat fleet and Cornish seascapes, but after the Jubilee Regatta in 2001, his focus turned to the larger classic yachts that typically tour the Mediterranean circuit during the summer but more recently have graced British waters around Falmouth and The Solent with the Pendennis and Westward Cups and the J-Class regattas. Christie's in London regularly feature Jamie s work in their marine art sales, leading to some of the biggest names in art collecting his paintings. His work is also handled by the Rountree Tryon London gallery. High profile commissions include paintings of the world s largest privately owned clipper ship The Maltese Falcon, Eric Clapton s motor yacht Va Bene and a commission for the owner of the J-Class yacht Velsheda. His work has been featured in many publications, including books on Mariette, Mariquita, Lulworth and the recent book on the J-Class Ranger to Rainbow.

Lloyd Named after the famed Russian geologist and explorer Vladimir Alexandrovich Rusanov who specialised in the Arctic, the Vladimir Rusanov is an icebreaking Liquid Natural Gas carrier and is one of 15 vessels commissioned to service the Yamal LNG project in Russia. Each of the ships is designed to operate year-round from the Yamal peninsula and to break ice up to 2.5 metres thick. The first of the sister vessels completed, Christophe de Margerie, traversed from Norway to South Korea across the Northern Sea Route in 19 days in August The Vladimir Rusanov is the second of the series and owned by Mitsui OSK Lines LNG transport division. 4 FEBRUARY january 2019 march The Victoria in the Geiranger Fjord, Norway by Harley Crossley Originally built for Swedish American Line as the Kungsholm in 1966, the ship was the first Scandinavian vessel to be fitted with a bulbous bow. Built with two funnels, the forward one being a dummy, her classic lines were beautifully proportioned. Sold to P&O Cruises in 1979, the forward funnel and main mast were removed. Renamed Sea Princess and cruising mainly out of Sydney for the next three years, she then returned to the UK. Following a refit in Malta in 1986 she joined Princess Cruises cruising from America. Returned to the UK in 1991 as part of the P&O fleet again, she was renamed Victoria in Her classic lines and small size made the ship a favourite with passengers.

5 MARCH th: Bank Holiday (N. Ireland) february april Wan Hai 317 by Robert G. Lloyd Built in 2008, with a length of 213 metres, a beam of 32 metres and a draught of 11.5 metres, and with a capacity of 2,646 twenty-foot containers (TEU), Wan Hai 317 is classed as a feeder ship in modern terms. She sails on weekly service from Tokyo, Yokohama, Nagoya, Osaka, Kobe, Keelung/Taipei, Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Port Klang, Pasir Gudang, Singapore, Hong Kong and back to Tokyo. Wan Hai Lines was founded in 1965 in Taiwan as a shipping company (mainly in log transportation). In 1976, Wan Hai entered the business of container vessel shipping and now operates a fleet of more than 100 vessels within its Asia shipping network. Courtesy of Wan Hai Lines.

Lloyd Built as the SS France for Compagnie Générale Transatlantique as an ocean liner, she was constructed by the Chantiers de l Atlantique shipyard at Saint-Nazaire, France, and put into service in February At the time of her construction in 1960, the 316m vessel was the longest passenger ship ever built, a record that remained unchallenged until the construction of the 345m RMS Queen Mary 2 in The France was later purchased by Norwegian Cruise Line in 1979, renamed SS Norway and underwent significant modifications that better suited her for cruising duties. She was sold to be scrapped in Courtesy of Cunard Line Ltd.

7 MAY th: Bank Holiday (UK) 27th: Bank Holiday (UK) april june Off the Dagger Ramereez by Robert Carter OAM, FASMA, FISMP A familiar sight to seafarers in the days of sail were the uninhabited Diego Ramirez Islands, about 60 nautical miles south-west of Cape Horn. Seamen of the day coined this sobriquet which tended to replace the correct pronunciation. Falls of Clyde was built in 1878 at Glasgow by Russell & Co. for the Glasgow Falls Line who named all of their ships after Scottish waterfalls and was initially employed in the India trade. Several owners later, she was towed to Honolulu to become a stationary exhibition ship for the Hawaii Maritime Center. Although currently in a state of disrepair, she is quite unique as she is the last remaining example of this rig left.

8 JUNE may july The Queen Mary Maiden Arrival at Ocean Dock, Southampton by Harley Crossley Built for Cunard White Star Line by John Brown of Clydebank, RMS Queen Mary sailed on her maiden voyage to New York in May In August she won the Blue Riband for the fastest east to west crossing of the Atlantic. In 1940 she was transported to Australia for conversion to a troopship. During her wartime service she sailed over 600,000 miles and transported in excess of 800,000 passengers. Restored to her former glory, the Queen Mary sailed on her first postwar crossing to New York on 31 July Operating alongside Queen Elizabeth, the transatlantic service continued profitably for the next fifteen years. Queen Mary was sold to the City of Long Beach, California, in 1967 where she is now a tourist attraction.

9 JULY th: Bank Holiday (N. Ireland) june august Classics out of the Mist by Jamie Medlin Here we see the classic yachts Mariette, Mariquita and Tuiga after rounding the weather mark at the Needles during Saturday s race of the 2010 Westward Cup. The race saw a complete range of conditions from glorious sunshine at the start, to the huge cloud of sea mist which we see in the painting developing mid-race. The 15m Fife-designed Tuiga took the final day s line honours, also winning the overall regatta and therefore being the first beneficiary of the Westward Cup. The beautiful Mariquita, the sole survivor of the 19m Class built in 1911, was second over the line, followed by the majestic 42m Mariette, built in 1915.

10 AUGUST th: Bank Holiday (Scotland) 26th: Bank Holiday (UK not Scotland) july september MV ACT 2 by Robert G. Lloyd Built by the Bremer Vulkan Schiffbau & Maschinenfabrik in Germany and delivered in 1969, ACT 2 was a steam turbine driven containership and at the time represented the leading edge of containership technology. At over 215m long, with a gross tonnage of 24,821 tons and a capacity of over 1,300 twenty-foot equivalent containers (TEU), she was considered large at the time. She sailed from the UK and Western European ports to Australia, New Zealand, West and East Coasts of the US, South America and Central America until sold to P&O Nedlloyd and renamed Moreton Bay, and was finally scrapped in May 1998.

11 SEPTEMBER august october MS Queen Elizabeth by Robert G Lloyd MS Queen Elizabeth is a cruise ship of the Vista class operated by the Cunard Line. She was built at the Fincantieri Monfalcone Shipyard, Italy, at a cost of approximately 350 million. With a tonnage of 90,901 gross tons and a length of 294m, and with a total of 12 passenger decks, she is considered relatively small by today s standards of cruise ships. Following the ship s construction in Italy from 2007 to 2010, Cunard Line officially confirmed that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II would name Cunard s new ship. The ceremony was held in Southampton on Monday 11 October 2010 before the ship set sail on her maiden voyage to the Canary Islands the following day.

12 OCTOBER september november Channel Packet Boat circa 1790 by Patrick R. Donovan RSMA, ASMA The painting depicts a sloop, a single-masted fore-and-aft-rigged vessel, ideal for the short sea routes across the Channel. Her sail plan comprised a huge foreand-aft gaff mainsail, the boom of which extended well over the stern, a square sail in the form of a topsail, with the lower yard allowing the setting of a main course, and a headsail. A long bowsprit allowed the setting of two additional headsails. This sail plan, combined with a proven hull design, gave the vessel an exceptional turn of speed, up to eleven knots, ideal for the carrying of mails and passengers from south-eastern ports to Calais, Boulogne, Nieuwpoort and Ostend.

13 NOVEMBER october december Wan Hai 501 by Robert G. Lloyd Built in 2005, Wan Hai 501 is one of six sister vessels built for Wan Hai Lines for their intra-asia service. With a length of 269m, a beam of 32m, a deadweight tonnage of 52,249 tons and a capacity of 4,252 TEU, she is classed as a Panamax container vessel. She is pictured departing Hong Kong bound for her next port of call, Port Klang, Malaysia. In this view she has just passed under the Tsing Ma Bridge. It is the world's 11th-longest span suspension bridge, and was the second longest at time of completion. The bridge was named after two of the islands at its ends, namely Tsing Yi and Ma Wan. 14 DECEMBER 2019 Two White Ships, the Bangalore by James Brereton The Bangalore, a white-hulled steel ship built in the 1800s, of 1,700 tons. Responsible for goods runs from Calcutta to New York and later to Java. In 1908 she was reported missing, Cape Horn being credited with her destruction.
