In Memoriam ALAN K. BORTHWICK, After an 18-month battle with cancer, Alan Kirby Borthwick passed away on July 3, 2017 in Columbus, OH, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Port Jefferson, NY on October 21, He spent his early years in Brooklyn, and was raised in Troy, NY. Alan graduated from Troy High School in 1958 and from the University of Rochester in Later he received an MBA from Pace University in 1979 and a CPA certification in His early working career in the nascent computer industry took him to National Cash Register in Dayton, OH, the city where he met his future wife, Mary Ann Layton, whom he married on January 1, In 1969, he joined IBM in Manhattan and settled in Morningside Heights. Alan s training in systems prepared him for a career as an analyst from the 70s through the 90s with several New York firms. Mary and Alan loved travel and visited all seven continents together. They enjoyed cruising over the past two decades, which led Alan to join the World Ship Society-Port of New York Branch, serving as its Treasurer for a number of years. During the Christmas-New Year holidays of , they celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary with their children and grandchildren aboard the Queen Mary 2. Alan is survived by his wife, Mary, sister Kathy Morgan (John), brother David Borthwick (Deborah), daughter Karina Harding (Fritz), son Geoffrey Borthwick (Mary), and three grandchildren. As icons of modernity and aspirational living, artists, engineers, architects and passengers all vied for influence and access in the creation and enjoyment of these man-made islands at sea. Ocean liners were intricately constructed pieces of culture in the appearance of their design, the elegance of their engineering and the division of their social space and each with its own distinct personality. Drawing from international institutions and private collections, the exhibition brings together nearly 200 works including paintings, sculpture, models, furniture, lighting, wall panels, textiles, fashion, photographs, posters and film. SHIP S LOG THE BAZZAR IS COMING The annual Ocean Liner Bazaar will take place on Saturday, November 18, As usual, it will be held at the Abigail Adams Smith Auditorium, 417 East 61 st Street, Manhattan, 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM. SHIP NEWS THE SKYE S NOT THE LIMIT: CRYSTAL BACH and CRYSTAL SKYE are the latest additions to the Crystal Cruises fleet, and the latter is not even a ship! She is Crystal s deluxe Boeing LR, with capacity for 88 passengers in lie-flat beds. She features a 24-seat lounge, a stand up bar, and two galleys to serve passengers that famed Crystal cuisine. CRYSTAL BACH, one of four new river boats that Crystal has ordered, sailed on her maiden voyage in July. The 110-passenger luxury vessel will operate alongside sister CRYSTAL MAHLER on the Rhine, Main and Danube Rivers. The sleek new BACH-class riverboats will feature typically luxurious Crystal interiors. (Crystal Cruises) BAHAMAS PARADISE TIMES 2: Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line, operator of 2-night cruises, has received approval from the Port of Palm Beach, Florida to double their weekly departures. The port is located in Riviera Beach, FL and benefits from close proximity to West Palm Beach airport, and the lack of crowds associated with the huge nearby ports of Ft. Lauderdale and Miami. The cruise line, which was acquired in late 2016 by former NCL CEO Kevin Sheehan, will purchase or lease the built COSTA neoclassica as their second ship. Costa recently announced fleet changes, which, in addition to the disposal of the CLASSICA, will bring the 1996-built COSTA VICTORIA back to the Mediterranean from the Far East. 4

5 The GRAND CELEBRATION will be joined by COSTA neoclassica in 2018, doubling the fleet of Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line. (Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line and Costa Cruises) MORE DISNEY DREAMS: Disney Cruises has had tremendous success with their newest cruise ships, the 129,690-ton, 4,000-passenger sisters DISNEY DREAM (2011) and DISNEY FANTASY (2012). Last year, they announced an order for two additional 135,000-ton vessels, and expanded the order to three in mid-july. It is evident that family cruising is another segment of the worldwide cruise industry that continues to experience solid growth. The new Disney Cruise Line ships will be modeled on the enormously successful DISNEY DREAM class. (Disney Cruise Line) QUANTUM ULTRA = SPECTRUM: Royal Caribbean s latest ship is SPECTRUM OF THE SEAS, an expanded or ultra version of the 2014 QUANTUM-Class. Construction began in August at Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany for the 168,800ton vessel, which will accommodate 4,200 passengers. She will be dedicated to the ever-growing Chinese market when she enters service in RCCL will soon take delivery of the even larger SYMPHONY OF THE SEAS, an OASIS-Class ship that will be the world s largest, topping 230,000-tons with space for over 6,000 passengers. 6 MARCO POLO CONTINUES TO EXPLORE THE WORLD: In a surprise announcement, British line Cruise & Maritime Voyages has scheduled the 1965-built MARCO POLO (ex-alexandr PUSHKIN) well into 2019, despite rumors that she was for sale following her fall 2018 season. The 52-year-old former Soviet transatlantic liner will undertake a 70-day Circle South America Cruise in the winter of 2019, departing Bristol UK on January 6, returning on March 17. There has been no word yet regarding service during the spring 2019 season. 7 WORLD SHIP SOCIETY, PORT OF NEW YORK BRANCH OCEAN LINER BAZAAR SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2017 The Port of New York Branch of the World Ship Society will sponsor an Ocean Liner Bazaar for members and friends on Saturday, November 18, 2017 from 10:00 A.M. through 2:00 P.M. The bazaar will be held at: Abigail Adams Smith Auditorium 417 East 61st Street, New York City (between First and York Avenues) Dealers and collectors of ocean liner memorabilia will offer for sale pins, pendants, prints, posters, paperweights, medallions, models, deck plans, brochures, china, silverware, ashtrays, key chains and many other rare and unique collectible items from ocean liners past and present. Admission is $5.00 per person, payable at the door. For vendors and exhibitors, a large eight-foot table is available for $ A small four-foot table can be rented for $ Each renter of a large table will be permitted to have one person to help set up the table and assist during the bazaar. To register for a table, please complete the form below and mail it with the appropriate fee to the address indicated. All vendors are responsible for applicable sales tax associated with the sale of items at the bazaar. Vendors are advised to bring change for cash transactions and to keep records and receipts for tax purposes.
