After hours or emergency contact can be made by calling the Security Desk at (510) ext Weeknight (Mon Fri) Schedule: Meet on the pier no later than 5:00 pm to begin your evening program. Check-In Overnight gear is not allowed on the ship before 5:00 pm and private vehicles are not allowed on the pier. Parking is available and participants are expected to carry sleeping bags and other gear on board at the appointed time. The Live-Aboard Program is conducted in a fun-spirited, naval organization manner: falling in, stowing your gear, and following orders are all part of this unique and memorable experience. Safety Drill (Mandatory) All participants MUST participate in a fire/safety drill..handicap Access Due to the historical nature of the ship, handicap access is extremely limited. Emergencies Hornet staff will be on site and available in case of emergency. Please Note: Many events take place on board the USS Hornet and it is possible that a banquet, dance, cocktail reception, or other function may be scheduled during your visit. On such occasions, your group activities will remain separated from the event area.
4 YOUTH LEADER CHECKLIST T he aircraft carrier USS Hornet is one of the best known and most decorated ships in the history of the United States Navy. A unique State and National Historic Landmark, she served our country from WWII to the Apollo moon missions. We proudly welcome your group on board for an exciting overnight experience as junior crewmembers in the Hornet s fun and educational Live-Aboard Program. The following checklist is intended to help plan your group s overnight stay: Application Review the enclosed General Information and Itinerary. Send in the application, along with a $100 nonrefundable deposit. This program is very popular, so we suggest reservations to be made as early as possible because dates book months in advance. (Due to booking of multiple groups each evening, it is important to provide an accurate count since we may not be able to accept add-ons past one week prior to your scheduled stay.) You will receive an confirmation. If no address is available, your confirmation will be mailed. If you have not received an acknowledgement within two weeks, call the Live-Aboard office at (510) ext edu@uss-hornet.org Liability Insurance Make arrangements to get a copy of your certificate of insurance and, if applicable, a tour permit showing that the group is covered for liability insurance during your stay on the USS Hornet. The certificate must show the Aircraft Carrier Hornet Foundation as a named insured. We cannot permit your group to stay on board without this certificate. General Information Make copies of the General Information, Driving Directions, and Rules & Safety Guidelines provided with your confirmation and distribute them to your group members. Schedule Meeting Schedule a meeting with both the youth and their parents at least six (6) weeks prior to the overnight date to collect the program fee and to plan for your overnight stay. These are the points that you will want to cover: Review Rules & Safety Guidelines. Review General Information, including gear and clothing to bring. Location and time to meet (either a central meeting place for caravan purposes or on the USS Hornet pier). Participants are to wait on the pier until the group is ready to board. Gear is not to be brought aboard the ship before 5:00 pm. Roster Sheet Complete the roster sheet that is sent with your acknowledgement/payment voucher. Make sure you have at least one adult for every six youths. (A 1:1 adult to child ratio is expected in groups with children ages 5 9.) Your group will be divided into adult-youth teams for crew work assignments. Final Payment Required 3 Weeks in Advance of Your Scheduled Stay Send your payment to the USS Hornet reservations office, along with your completed roster and proof of insurance, at least three weeks prior to the date of your stay. Rules and Itinerary Distribute copies of both the Rules & Safety Guidelines and the Overnight Itinerary to each of your adult chaperones. Review the rules again with the entire group before boarding the ship. Arrival Plan to arrive as a group by 4:00 pm for the weekend (Saturday) itinerary, or by 6:00 pm for the weekday (Wed. Fri.) itinerary. While your group is getting organized on the pier, please take a final head count and be prepared to confirm the number of participants and whether any members will be arriving late. You will then receive a wristband with flight simulator ticket for each of your group members and a tour map for each one of the chaperones.
