Alaskans are pragmatic and independent - ministry can be challenging, but also very rewarding. Teams work anywhere from downtown Anchorage to rural, off-grid locations in the Matanuska Valley. ANCHORAGE Why Alaska? Small churches in the heart of the city battle poverty, alcoholism, drug abuse, and homelessness. Local pastors want the help and encouragement of outreach-oriented teams working alongside their congregations. Invest in awesome kids in need of Christian role models. You ll also have the opportunity to hike or mountain bike through the untouched forest along the lakeshore. On the final day teams drive along Cook Inlet s beautiful Turnagain Arm. You ll experience the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, then hike along a river trail and ascend Byron Glacier in a gorgeous mountain basin. From there we go to Virgin Falls, a scenic waterfall in the northernmost rainforest in the world. Soak up the trade winds in a hammock under the palm trees and eat a seafood buffet together on the beach. Recreation options include snorkeling, fishing, or a sunset cruise. Those who wish can also explore El Morro, the 500-year-old Spanish fort that stands guard over San Juan Harbor. Teams will then drive to Isla Verde, San Juan s most picturesque beach. There they can swim in the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea, stroll along the sandy beach, sit in a beach chair under a palm tree, or choose to snorkel or surf. 10 Texas Gulf Coast Why Texas Gulf Coast? Thirst Missions has roots in the small towns on the Texas Gulf Coast. In August 2017 we watched Hurricane Harvey devastate the region, destroying over 9,000 homes and damaging nearly 200,000. Many families need help, and the need will persist for years to come. Hurricane Harvey became a catalyst for us to jump into ministry along the Texas Gulf Coast permanently. Our Texas teams focus on work projects to help the poor, needy, and neglected. May God bless your team as you experience Texas culture and serve as Christ s hands and feet. Along the ride you ll see cotton fields, bluebonnets, and pastures with Texas Longhorns grazing. You ll soon arrive at picturesque Matagorda County beach. Your group will have a few hours to swim in the surf, stroll along the sandy beach, search for seashells, walk out to the end of a long pier, or visit the nature center. After leaving the beach you ll have a last meal together of fine Texas BBQ. The evening will conclude with a time of worship, prayer, and sharing of highlights.
