3 COAL AND COKE STATISTICS DECEMBER 1967 Monthly coal and coke statistics are designed to provide current information on the production, consumption and stocks of coal and coke in Canada. Industrial consumers' consumption and stocks are reported regionally for the provinces of Ontario and Quebec. Groups of economic regions have been used to divide the two provinces geographically. The map which appears in this publication shows the location of the economic regions. A list of the counties forming these economic regions is on the reverse side. December production of coal amounted to 1,026,730 tons a decrease of over the December 1966 production of 1,174,225 tons. Landed imports were 757,509 tons compared with 527,018r tons in the same period last year. Exports (compiled h' EYCLrnal Trade) for December 1966 amounted to L)omestic shipments of coal as reported by mine operators dccreased Co 916,469 tons in December 1967 from 1,016,129 tons in December 1966 while total shipments declined to 1,006,231 tons from 1,112,282 tons in the same period. In order to expedite the collection and compilation of returns, the industrial consumers' survey is confined to firms which consume a minimum of 1,000 tons per annum. In December 1967, consumption of coal and coke by industrial consumers amounted to 2,003,215 tons an increase of 3.6% compared with the coriesponding period last year. During the same period, industrial consumers' stocks increased to 6,654,319 tons from 6,299,512 tons. The amount of coke available in Canada increased to 389,697 tons in December 1967 from 315,025 tons in December 1966.
