4 4 Flexible Flue Liners INFORMATION Flexible Flue Liners INFORMATION Introduction Flue Liners can only be installed completely enclosed inside a masonry chimney. A non-masonry enclosure such as a timber frame with plasterboard is not acceptable. The type of flue liner used depends on the appliance and the fuel used to burn in the appliance. Triplelock gas and oil flue liner is suitable for gas and kerosene (28 second) oil appliances. It is manufactured from a single skin of 316L grade stainless steel. Quattro-SS comes in two grades of stainless steel: 316L grade stainless steel, which is suitable for wood burning and solid fuel use, and has a 10 year warranty. 904L grade stainless steel, which is suitable for smokeless fuels, and has a 25 year warranty. Maintenance Provision should be made for inspecting and cleaning the liner especially on multi-fuel liners on solid fuel applications. The liner should be swept at least once a year by a qualified chimney sweep. Chemical chimney cleaners which contain chlorine, fluorine or metal scarifying devices cannot be used under any circumstances and will invalidate your warranty. Mechanical cleaning with a stiff nylon brush and rods is the only method recommended. Insulation Insulation or back-filling should be done on tall, large or exposed chimneys as a matter of course. On the installations, whilst not essential, an insulated flue should ensure maximum performance and minimise condensation in the flue lining. To insulate the chimney either use a loose fill granular insulating material such as Vermiculite or Leca, or use Rockwool insulating tubes that can be secured around the flue liner during installation. Life Expectancy Under normal operating conditions and providing that the flue liner has be installed and sized correctly, then a flexible flue liner should last the lifetime of the appliance. Fuels Only fuels which are HETAS approved or recommended by the appliance manufacturer can be used. Household refuse or rubbish must not be burned. Wood must be well seasoned for at least a year and must not contain more than 20% moisture to avoid creosote deposits building up which can cause chimney fires. If the appliance is slumbered overnight or for long periods, then it is essential to run the appliance at a high fire for a minimum of 30 minutes per day. Failure to meet this requirement may result in premature liner failure and in these circumstances the warranty is invalid. 12 12 Chimney Systems INFORMATION Chimney Systems - All Fuels INFORMATION Regulations In addition with the manufacturer s installation instructions all flues installed in England and Wales must be in compliance with Document J of the Building Regulations. In Scotland part F is the relevant section of the Scottish Building Regulations. Design & Layout Building Regulations recommend a flue height of at least 4½ metres and that the chimney should be as straight as feasible. This height, though, will depend on various variables, number of direction changes in the flue, building height, type of appliance etc. If a purely vertical chimney run is impossible, the regulations state that the only horizontal section permitted is a maximum of 150mm (6inches) to connect the back of the appliance to the chimney. They also recommend that there is at least 600mm vertical flue pipe from the appliance before any direction change of the flue. Elsewhere in the run there should be no angle exceeding 45º degrees from the vertical and then the run between the bends should not be more than 20% of the total chimney height and no more than two offsets can be in any one chimney. If there are two offsets then cleaning access must be provided. If passing through a ceiling or floor there must be no joints in the flue pipe while it is passing though and if the floor/ceiling which can catch fire, there must be an air gap between the flue pipe and the ceiling/floor as stated by the manufacturer of the flue - the (G) number in the designation. Where the flue gas temperature rises above 250ºC then ventilated fire stops should be used for any multi-fuel installations, but for gas and oil solid or standard fire stops can be used. Twin wall flue systems should protrude below the first ceiling by a distance of approximately three times the diameter of the flue pipe. Any flue that passes through an outside wall must use a wall sleeve. Rooms where the appliances is rated over 5kW will need air vents to supply correct air flow so that both the flue and the appliance work correctly. All these necessary regulations and requirements are laid out in the Building Regulations document J. Flue Pipe Diameter The diameter of the flue pipes for the chimney system will be stated by the appliance manufacturer and should not be smaller than the appliance outlet. Wood burning or multi-fuel appliances less than 30kW must have flue with a internal diameter of at least 150mm (6 inch). For DEFRA approved appliances burning smokeless fuels 125mm (5 inch) flue pipe can be installed. Supports In general, joist and wall supports are needed to hold and support the load and vertical weight of the chimney systems whereas walls bands, roof and rafter supports stop the flue from moving laterally. To make sure that the flue system is secure, wall bands should be every 2½m and at offsets. For long free standing flues that are above the roof line and extend over this should use guy wires to secure the flue pipe. Maintenance Your flue should be easy to access for cleaning and inspection - especially for solid-fuel appliances. Current recommendations state that solid fuel appliances are swept and maintained at least annually. Carbon Monoxide According to Document J (October 2010), where a new or replacement solid fuel appliance is installed, a carbon monoxide alarm should be fitted in the same room as the appliance. The alarm should comply with BS EN 50291:2001 and be powered by a battery designed to operate for 7 years. The alarm should be located (1) on the ceiling at least 300mm from any wall or, if located on a wall, as high as possible (above doors and windows) but not within 150mm of the ceiling, and (2) between 1m and 3m horizontally from the appliance. 21 Connecting Pipes - All Fuels INFORMATION Connecting Pipes INFORMATION 21 Introduction EURO-VIT, MI-VIT, 1mm Stainless Steel are used as connecting flue pipes from the appliance to the chimney and must only be used in the same room as the appliance is installed. Clay pot adapters allow an appliance to be connected directly to a ceramic or clay liner, the liner must be smoke tested to make sure it is in good condition, and must be installed within a masonry chimney. Installation The maximum installed length of EURO-VIT and MI-VIT is 1.8 metres. 1mm Stainless Steel may also be used to reline existing masonry chimneys. Distances from exposed combustible materials must be three times the diameter of the flue, for example, a 125mm flue pipe should be a minimum of 375mm away from anything combustible, unless otherwise specified by the manufacturer. It is recommended that a vertical rise of 600mm should be allowed immediately above the appliance before the flue changes in direction, this is to help the draw of the flue. By using an adjustable length immediately above the appliance enables the appliance to be removed without dismantling the flue system. Bends must not be used to form an angle greater than 45º from the vertical, unless connecting to the back outlet of an appliance. No more than two offsets (four bends) is permitted. Flue Size The size of the flue pipe used should be as recommended by the appliance manufacturer, and should not be smaller than the appliance outlet. Maintenance Provision should be made for inspecting and cleaning the chimney. This is particularly important on solidfuel applications. It is recommended that chimneys serving solid fuel appliances be swept and maintained as frequently as necessary but at least once a year. 29 Installation Products INSTALLATION PRODUCTS 29 Cowls & Terminals A cowl is a covering for a chimney and is used to increase the draught and prevent downdraught. It is fitted to the top of the chimney pot to stop wind blowing smoke back down the chimney into the room beneath. Another function is to stop birds and animals from nesting in the chimney as well as keeping rain from going down it. Fans - K & W A chimney fan is a unit that helps maintain a smoke and odour-free indoor climate when you are using your stove or fireplace. Chimney fans are fitted to your chimney and ensure optimal draft irrespective of weather conditions and location. Optimal draft in your chimney makes lighting and restoking solid fuel fires easier and stops smoke spilling into the room. It also ensures optimal combustion and prevents ash and dust being blown into the room. The chimney fan itself is an electrically powered ventilator. Its operation can be regulated using a control unit. Flashings Flashings come in various sizes and can be used on a variety of roofs. Flashings are graded as to the type of roof they can be used on and the temperature of the pipe that goes through it. Use high temperature flashings for where the heat from the pipe will exceed 160 degrees centigrade, which may happen with very short chimney runs when burning solid fuel on a high output stove. Lead based flashings are useful for very large or awkward shaped roofs due to the malleability of the material. To help installation you should always use a Fixing Kit. Fire Cements Fire cement is a pliable adhesive able to withstand heat up of to 1600 degrees centigrade. The product is specially formulated for patching and repairs of firebacks and brickwork as well as for gas tight assembly, installation and maintenance of boilers, fires, flues, stoves and heating installations. High Temperature Sealants An engineer-grade water-based ceramic sealant for use where very high heat resistance is required. It forms a rigid bond to glass, ceramic and metal surfaces and can withstand high temperatures up to 1250 degrees centigrade. A highly formulated material with good thermal expansion which can be used in many high temperature applications. Plaster & Screed Plaster is a building material used for coating walls and ceilings. Plaster starts as a dry powder similar to mortar or cement and like those materials it is mixed with water to form a paste which liberates heat and then hardens. Unlike mortar and cement, plaster remains quite soft after setting, and can be easily manipulated with metal tools or even sandpaper. These characteristics make plaster suitable for a finishing, rather than a load-bearing material. Register Plates A register plate is simply a piece of light metal with a circular hole cut out of it to accommodate the diameter of the stove fluepipe. The plate is placed in the fireplace opening where the stovepipe meets the chimney flue section. It is a necessary item as the chimney flue must be sealed around the stove fluepipe.
