4 3 The Opinel company was founded in 1890 in Chambery in the Savoie region of France by Joseph Opinel. Today his descendants still own the company, which employs around 100 people, produces 4 million knives per year and sells to 70 countries across the world. The easily - recognisable Opinel folding knife is acknowledged as one of the best knives in the world. The Victoria and Albert Museum lists the Opinel pocket knife as being among the 100 best designs in the world, placing it with icons such as the Porsche 911 and the Rolex watch. In 2006 the Opinel pocket knife, in the Phaidon Design Classics is recognised as one of the 999 most successful designs of all times by a jury of international designers.

15 Maserin Coltellerie has been producing knives since 1960 in Maniago, Italy, a Cutlery in Maniago since 1960 city that is known as the city of knives. Our father Fervido founded the company. He was born in 1934 and started working at the age of 14 as a worker in a factory that produced knives, scissors and tools for agriculture. At that time there was no time for fun only for work, from the morning till night all week long and Saturdays as well. Fervido also had to work in the fields to help his parents. Following military service, he started his small company in a space where he worked components for larger companies and started to make his own models, i.e. the world wide famous STILETTO classic spring knives. From them on orders poured in and he employed his first workers and the product line grew. In 1985 our father built a 3,000 square meter factory which we are still using today. We are also very proud of the fact that Maserin Coltellerie was the first company in Italy to start a cooperation with Italian knife makers. All of the Maserin family work and contribute to our family company. Our mom, Olga, also worked in the company. From our earliest beginnings, produces a very high quality line of superior knives. We have also NATO NCAGE AJ988 and UNI ISO 9001 certification. We have our own designs and produce customized products for private label and corporate logos. 27 Brothers Steinar and Sigmund Helle started knife production in the old forge on their farm in Holmedal, Norway, in 1932 Then, as today, much of the production is done manually. The philosophy remains the same: Quality craftmanship is best preserved by skilled craftsmen - those with extensive experience and knowledge who still take pride in making each and every Helle knife unique. Many Helle knives have a unique triple laminated stainless steel blade. The core is made of high alloy steel which gives it a lasting, razor-sharp edge. The outer two layers are of stainless steel(18/8) to protect the blade against breakage and corrosion, while the high carbon core still provides a superb cutting edge 26

28 HELLE THE MÂNDRA - DESIGNED AND FIELD TESTED WITH LES STROUD MÂNDRA - NEW The Mândra knife has a triple laminated stainless steel 69mm blade that is complemented by a handle of curly birch and vulcan fibre. The leather sheath with stud clip has a long thong. In order to perfect the design of this newest knife, Helle travelled to the raw, remote and overwhelmingly beautiful country of Romania working alongside Les Stroud on his latest Survivorman episodes. The expedition was situated in the Carpathian, a 1450 kilometre mountain range that extends through an area of great dynamic contrast with both picturesque valleys and striking mountain peaks, over 2500 metres. An area of untouched nature, the Carpathian Mountains have impressive flora and fauna in addition to presenting the largest populations of brown bears, wolves, chamois and lynxes in Europe. During Les Stroud s time in Romania, early prototypes of The Mândra were utilized in the Survivorman Romania episode, and adjustments and refinements were then integrated into the final design. The word Mândra literally means proud and is named for the hilly peak where Les was found by the Salvamont resuce party during the episode. THE DIDI GALGALU - INSPIRED AND CREATED FOR OVERLAND ADVENTURE DIDI GALGALU - NEW The Didi Galgalu utilizes a full tang construction with three rivets reinforcing the African Kiaat wood handle. The blade of Sandvik 12C27 steel is 129mm long and thin enough to use for cutting or carving. An adventure documentary group - The Voetspore team - were joined by a team from Helle on part of their 2014 Great Rift Valley Expedition. During the expedition each member of the team was given a prototype knife to hand-sand and shape, fine-tuning the design s functionality. The 16,000 km trip would take the team through what is considered the last frontier of Africa, the remote Didi Galgalu Desert in Northern Kenya. At the end of the expedition, the hand-shaped prototypes returned to the Helle factory, where the design team poured over the variations created during the journey. Natural materials like African Kiaat wood were hand selected and paired with the new designs.
