HOW THIS BOOK IS ORGANIZED PART 1: BUILD YOUR OWN SOLAR OVEN In this part, we ll show you how to create a simple solar oven to cook dangerous raw food. Eating raw meat can cause horrible disease quickly. With your solar oven you ll be able to keep your family fed and healthy no matter what occurs. PART 2: BUILD YOUR OWN SOLAR WATER DISTILLER Next, we ll show you how to create a solar water distiller. You ll be able to purify even the dirtiest rain water completely off the grid. Emergency Energy Preparedness 2
1BUILD YOUR OWN SOLAR OVEN FOOD AND WATER SAFETY In the event of a power outage, it s easy to forget about food and water safety, but this really is one of the most important things to remember. The last thing you want to be worrying about in that sort of situation is food poisoning! First, you should only eat or drink food and water that has been stored in an hermetically sealed, unopened container that doesn t need to be refrigerated. Canned foods, plastic water bottles, juice boxes and individually wrapped snacks are all good examples of this. Before opening any food or water container that may have been contaminated, the outside should be washed with a mild bleach and water solution and allowed to air dry (preferably in the sun). The same goes for any food preparation surfaces or tools and all plates, bowls, cups and utensils. Keep frozen foods frozen as long as possible and don t open the freezer unless you absolutely must. As soon as something has become warmer than normal refrigerator temperature, it must either be thrown out or cooked immediately. If you have any doubts as to whether a food item is spoiled or not, throw it out. Better safe than sorry! If you ve exhausted your water supplies and need to drink unsealed water, make sure you take appropriate measures. You can use water purification tablets if you have them, making sure to follow the instructions carefully. If you ve run out or couldn t find any, you will need to boil the water for at least 10 minutes before drinking it. A water distiller can also be used if you don t have a way to boil water or, even better, you can first distill and then boil it prior to drinking. 3 Build Your Own Solar Oven
SAFETY CAUTIONS The following are some general cautions for ensuring a safe build: Avoid electrical hazards when installing, wiring, operating and maintaining any of the projects provided in this book. It is recommended that the components for your projects remain packed in the box until time of installation in order to avoid accidental damage. Never leave your products unsupported or unsecured. Work only under dry conditions, with dry materials and tools. Do not stand or step on your projects. If not otherwise specified, it is recommended that requirements of the latest local, national or regional electric codes be followed. Use your projects for their intended function only. Do not artificially concentrate heat or artificially generated hot air on your projects. WARNING All instructions should be read and understood before attempting to install, wire, operate and maintain any of these projects. Power Tool Safety Power tools make work faster and let you complete projects much more easily. With that convenience, however, comes many safety concerns. Blades rotating at very high speeds, the presence of electricity and the sheer power of some of these tools make them very dangerous. Special care should be taken when operating power tools. Emergency Energy Preparedness 4
Safety Apparel Safety goggles or a safety mask should be worn while operating power tools. Shards of metal or wood can dislodge at high speed and do irreparable damage to eyes or the soft tissue of the face. Safety footwear can provide some protection against electric shock and can also protect toes if heavy items are dropped. Guards and Safety Switches According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, guards should be installed on power tools to protect the user from exposed moving parts. A safety guard should never be removed while a tool is in operation. Many kinds of saws and drills have a safety control that shuts the power off to the tool when pressure is released. This way, if a tool is dropped during operation, it automatically shuts off and cannot cause damage to the user or surroundings as it falls. Electricity Power tools should be plugged into a grounded receptacle. Electric shock is a hazard to be avoided since it can easily be fatal. Never use tools in or around water unless they are doubleinsulated. Store tools in a dry place and maintain them properly. Replace frayed or worn cords on power tools. Pneumatic Tools These tools are powered by compressed air and can be very dangerous without proper caution. Before using, make sure that tools are secure on the air hose so that they don t fly off when operating. Pay close attention when using these powerful tools and maintain a safe distance from people who are operating them. Eye protection is a must, and screens can also be helpful to protect bystanders or other workers. Do not ever point a pneumatic tool at a person or animal. Workshop Safety Keep your work area well-lit and free of debris. Properly maintain tools and replace worn parts. Insist that everyone who uses power tools wear safety equipment. Do not operate power tools while distracted or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Respect the strength of these tools and use common sense while working. 5 Build Your Own Solar Oven
Building A Solar Oven Solar ovens are a great alernative to cooking over flames. It s also an easy item to build with little parts or tools needed. The following are simple steps on building a solar powered oven. Solar ovens are a great build to have on hand during an emergency or power outage. Its lightweight, portable and all you need is the power of the sun. what You ll Need: Mirrored plexi-glass (1Qty) 14 ¾ x24 (2Qty) 11 ¾ x 24 (2Qty) metal knob handles (or heat-resistant plastic handles) (1Qty) metal grate (for pot) 1 foam insulation (2Qty) 9 ¼ x 10 sides (2Qty) 9 ¼ x 15 ¼ front/back (1Qty) 9 ¾ x 13 bottom ½ drywall interior (2Qty) 9 ¼ x 10 sides (2Qty) 9 ¼ x 15 ¼ front/back (1Qty) 9 ¾ x 13 bottom (1Qty) Metal pot with glass curved lid (1Qty) 4 x 4 Swivel plate Black spray paint matte finish, heat resistant Glass cutter (if needed) Food thermometer ¾ paint grade wood box (2Qty) 17 x 9 front/back (2Qty) 12 1/8 x 9 sides ½ plywood base cut to 17 x 14 Clear glass lid - cut to 14 ½ x 12 Emergency Energy Preparedness 6
STEP 1: Measure & Cut All pieces Following the dimensions listed above, cut all material to size. The mirrored plexi-glass comes in a sheet which needs to be cut to fit 3 box sides. Using the measurements above, mark the cut line on your plexi-glass mirror. Cut by scoring the cut line 7-8 times, then using a square table edge, snap the plexi-glass mirror on the cut line. important The plexi-glass mirrors come with a protective plastic film on them. Make sure to keep the film on until you are completely set up and ready to cook. STEP 2: Building The Box A: MARK CENTER OF BASE BOARD First take your plywood base board (17 x14 plywood) and find the center. This will be where we mount our 4 swivel plate, further in the steps. To find the middle measure 8 ½ across, and 7 down. B: ATTACH BOX SIDES TOGETHER Using deck screws, attach the 4 sides of the box together. Place one screw on the top corner, and one screw on the bottom corner. Try your best to keep the box square. 7 Build Your Own Solar Oven
C: MOUNT BASE TO BOX Next, take your plywood base and attach it to the bottom of the box using screws. Make sure the marked side of the plywood is facing up. STEP 3: Install Foam Insulation & Drywall A: SPRAY PAINT INSULATION & Drywall Using a heat resistant matte finish black paint, spray paint the dry wall pieces and the foil sides of all insulation pieces. Set aside to dry. Helpful Tip The spray paint will not stick to the plastic side of the insulation. Make sure to spray paint the foil side only. B: INSTALL INSULATION & Dry wall Once your paint has dried on your insulation and drywall, line the inside of the box with the insulation pieces. Make sure to place the bottom insulation piece in last. Then place the dry wall pieces on top of the insulation. Emergency Energy Preparedness 8
STEP 4: Mount Swivel Plate Now that the inside of the box is fully insulated, let s mount the swivel plate. Take the premarked center (which we did in Step 2) and place the swivel plate on top. Using 4 screws, mount the swivel plate onto the bottom of the box. Once attached, turn the box over and test the swivel plate. The box should easily rotate, without any hesitation. Helpful Tip The point of the swivel plate is to make it easy to point the oven into the best sunlight. STEP 5: Install Mirrors Next, take your 3 plexi-glass mirrors and slide them between the insulation and the outside box. Make sure you slide them down as far as they will go. If your insulation is tight enough, the mirror should stay in place without any glue. 9 Build Your Own Solar Oven
STEP 6: Assemble Glass Top A: SETUP YOUR COOKING WARE Once your mirrors are installed, place a stainless-steel grate in the bottom of the box. This will keep your cooking pot from sitting directly on the bottom insulation. Next place your cooking pot (preferably a stainless steel pot with a curved glass lid) onto the steel grate. Helpful Tip We suggest using a glass lid for your pot, as it s important to see how the food is cooking. Once the glass top is on the box, and your oven is cooking, you cannot open the lid during cooking, as this will cause the heat to escape. B: ASSEMBLE YOUR GLASS TOP Take your precut glass top, and drill two holes into it. Next attach the two metal handles to the top of the glass. Emergency Energy Preparedness 10
WARNING Make sure to use caution when removing glass top after cooking. The handles will be hot to touch. It s best to use heat-restraint gloves. STEP 7: START CookING To start cooking, remove the plastic film on the mirrors and cut at the base of the box. Next place your food into your pot, and cover with your curved glass lid. Cover the box with your glass top, and point your solar oven in the direction of the sun. Be sure to test the temperature of the food with your thermometer before eating! Then, enjoy! CONCLUSION The solar oven is one of the less expensive projects to build and it s also very portable. Best time to cook, is 2 hours before and 2 hours after solar noon. During these hours on a sunny day, your solar oven can get up to 325 o C. To get the solar noon of any given day, add the time of sunrise and the time of sunset and divide it in half. Example: sunrise = 6:30am, sunset = 8:30pm (6:30+20:30) / 2 = solar noon = 1:30pm The average times for cooking your food could take from 2 4 hours depending on what your cooking and during what month. A tip to make the cooking time shorter is to cut your food into small cubes, especially meat, so the sun can evenly cook through the food. Have fun cooking! 11 Build Your Own Solar Oven
2BUILD YOUR OWN SOLAR WATER DISTILLER Introduction One of the most vital items to have well trying to prepare for a disaster is clean water. But, what if you weren t prepared with safe drinking water before a disaster hit or you ran out of water and now you can t find any. Well, below we ll show you how to make your own solar water distiller with just a few items. You ll be able to clean even the dirtest water and provide safe drinking water for you and your family. Let s get started. BuildING A Solar Water Distiller what You ll Need: ¾ paint grade wood (2Qty) 19 x 9 sides (1Qty) 13 x 5 ¼ front (1Qty) 15 x 9 ¼ back (1Qty) 13 x 2 ½ support beam Emergency Energy Preparedness 12
1 foam insulation (2Qty) 16 ¾ x 4 ¼ sides (1Qty) 13 x 3 ½ front (1Qty) 10 ½ x 5 ½ back (1Qty) 17 ¾ x 13 bottom ¾ diameter Plastic tubing (1Qty) 5-6 tubing piece (1Qty) 14 tubing piece (1Qty) 24 tubing piece Glass top cut to 19 x 14 ¾ ½ plywood base cut to 20 x 15 (1Qty) mirrored plexi-glass cut to 24 x 13 (2Qty) ¾ diameter elbow joints (plastic tubing) (1Qty) ¾ diameter end cap (plastic tubing) (2Qty) Hinges for backdoor (1Qty) Black roller paint tray (2Qty) Plastic clips (for mirrored plexi-glass) Food thermometer Glass cutter (if needed) Step 1: measure & Cut all Pieces First, using the dimensions listed above, measure and precut all the material. Take the 19 x 9 wood board sides and mark 5 ¼ from the bottom. Using a straight edge draw a line from the top of one end (9 ) to the previously marked spot (5 ¼ ). Cut along the line using a power saw. Repeat for the other 19 x 9 side board. Then drill the 1 holes for the tubing in the two side boards. The hole should be on the 5 ¼ side of the boards. Make sure one hole, is slightly higher than the other, so the water will drain out. Drill a 1 diameter hole, 1inch from the edge. The lower hole should be approximately 1/8 from the top. The hole on the higher side, should be as close to the top as possible. 13 Build Your Own Solar WATER DISTILLER
Step 2: assemble the main box A: CREATE THE BOX FRAME Now that our pieces are all precut, let s move on to assembling the main box. Take your front wood piece (13 x 5 ¼ ) and attach both the side pieces. Use 2 deck screws one on the top and one on the bottom, for each side piece. Make sure to leave the back piece off for now, as we will be using a hinge to hold the back piece in place. Next, screw the 13 x 2 ½ piece of wood across the top of the sides at the back of the box, to act as a support beam. Approximately ½ from the back and 2 down on each side. B: COMPLETING THE BOX Flip the box over, and attach the bottom plywood base, using screws. Step 3: install foam Insulation Using the pre-cut insulation, starting with the bottom piece, place the foam insulation inside the box, along the inside of the box walls. Make sure to install the insulation with the foil side facing inside the box. Emergency Energy Preparedness 14
Step 4: insert water tray Next, take a black paint roller tray and insert it in the bottom of the box. This will be the basin for the contaminated water. The tray should rest on the top of the insulation sides. Step 5: install collector pipe A: MARK AND CUT COLLECTOR PIPE First, slide the ¾ tubing through the predrilled holes on both sides, and mark the cut locations for the distilled water to collect. Make sure the tubing is centered prior to marking the cut lines. You want to mark the tubing on both ends near the box sides. Next take your rotary saw and cut a slot in the tubing where the distilled water can collect. B: INSTALL COLLECTOR PIPE Once you have cut your slot in the tubing, place the tubing back through the predrilled holes. The tubing should be resting on top of the insulation. Next take an end cap and place it on the high side of the tubing. Then on the lower side of the tubing (the side that will drain out the water), place an elbow joint, and have it face downwards, then attach another long tubing, to the end of the elbow. 15 Build Your Own Solar WATER DISTILLER
Step 6: ATTaCH cleaning door A: Assemble back door (Cleaning door) Next we are going to install the back piece (or cleaning door). First attach the hinges to the bottom of the back piece. Then attach the two side clips approximately 2-3 inches from the top of the back piece, one on either side. (These clips will hold the mirrored plexi-glass when distilling.) Once the clips are in place, glue the final insulation piece on the inside of the back door. Make sure to line up the back piece with the box, to insure a tight seal. B: Attach Back door & Water fill tubing While the back piece is lined up with the box, mark the drill spot for the water fill location 7½ in from the side and 1 down in the center. (The water fill location should be above the support beam.) Next drill a 1 hole on the back piece. Then attach the other side of the hinges to the bottom of the box with screws. Take a 4-5 long tubing section and attach an elbow joint to one side. This is how you fill the contaminated water basin. Step 7: mount glass Using silicone caulking, caulk the collector pipe in place, to make sure the slot in the tubing can easily catch the distilled water. Just caulk the tubing to the insulation underneath. Also caulk around the top of the box to mount the glass top. Make sure to only caulk the 3 top edges of the box. Do not caulk the back door top edge. Then place the precut glass on top of the box. Emergency Energy Preparedness 16
Step 8: Start Distilling Take your 4-5 long tubing and place it through the back door with the elbow joint facing up. Fill the basin with contaminated water, approximately half full. Then remove the tubing, and slide the reflective panel down the back of the cleaning door. When ready, peel off the protective coating on the reflective panel, and cut near the bottom. Put a clean bucket or pail under the distilled water collecting tubing, near the end of the box. Then place the water distiller unit in the direction of the sun, and start distilling. CONCLUSION For best results, use the cleaning door and clean the water basin and inside of the glass top after ever use. Now you can have clean, distilled water wherever and whenever you need it. 17 Build Your Own Solar WATER DISTILLER
