Often it is an added piece that is combined with the protective toe cap. External Metatarsal guard External metatarsal guards use an impact resistant material that sits on top of the entire boot and covers the laces. External met guards are often covered by leather or rubber for added protection. Typically external metatarsal guards tend to be stiffer, more rigid, and less flexible. Met Guards Along with your toes, the metatarsal bones of your foot are also vulnerable to injury. There is almost no additional flesh or fat covering these bones to protect them from impact. Met guards can protect up to 80-90% of the foot. There are two distinct types of metatarsal guards. Both types meet the ASTM MT/75 safety standard.
