CERTIFICATION & CREDENTIALS Large Bore Swaging ON-SITE FACILITIES New Improved Capabilities for Large Bore Hoses Recent investment at HD&F means that we can now externally swage rubber, PVC and composite hose from 6mm to 203mm (8 ) in diameter. This process enables us to offer a much stronger and therefore safer, method of attachment when securing products such as Bauer or Leverlock couplings into hard walled rubber suction hoses. This ultimately means the assembly is capable of higher working pressures and catastrophic coupling failure is significantly reduced when compared to traditional methods such as stainless steel straps or bolted clamps. 8 External Swaging Secure Attachments This process involves compressing an external swage ferrule into the outer cover of the hose, thereby trapping the hose between the internal hose-tail and external ferrule effecting a very secure and tamper-proof attachment. EXTERNAL SWAGER Innovative Processes Using the same principles as hydraulic swaging, We have developed SWAGED FERRULE specific swage ferrules that are suitable for softer walled industrial rubber hose, ensuring the ultimate in coupling security without the fear of damage to the hose or fitting. 9 Internal Swaging Specifically Designed Attachments Internal swaging differs in that an internal dolly is forced through the internal bore of the hose, expanding a specially designed hose tail-piece and forcing it into the rubber liner of the hose. Clean, Safe & Protective This process produces a perfectly smooth bore, with no internal restrictions making it the perfect method for hygiene critical applications, abrasive media, delicate products and applications where optimum flow and integrity are paramount e.g. offshore applications. DIN Clamps These are robust aluminium clamps that work extremely well with smooth tail couplings which are recommended for certain food and chemical hose assemblies. 12 TRIED & TESTED Pressure testing is our guarantee that the hose assembly has complete integrity and will be safe to use in its intended application. At HD&F we have a range of fixed and portable hydrostatic testing equipment that enable us to proof pressure test in accordance with ISO1402. Please talk to us at HD&F about your individual test requirements. Digital Pressure Tests Our state of the art digital pressure test cabinet enables hoses to be taken to pressure very quickly and safely, maintaining efficiency and ensuring the assembly experiences no loss in pressure. We can supply a recorder chart copy of the test cycle that is relevant to each individual hose assembly. Large Bore Testing We can offer testing to 12 (305mm bore) and pressures up-to 300bar. Portable Pressure Tests Let us come to you! We have portable test rigs which can be used safely on site for testing of process and composite hose assemblies. Please ask for more details. On-site Survey We will undertake a no-obligation site survey that will advise on suitability of hoses in application and we will also log all hoses/locations. HOSE MANAGEMENT WHAT OUR SERVICE OFFERS YOU Proof pressure test to 5000psi. Recorder chart test certificates available. Individual Hose Identification We will work with you to devise the most convenient method of creating a system of identifying individual hoses. This could be a numbering system, colour coding or a combination of both. Dedicated Hose Register We will develop and maintain a dedicated register for your business and your hose assemblies. Our system is regularly checked as part of EN ISO 9001 accreditation. Numerous tagging and identification options available. Custom specifications on hose & fittings catered for. We pride ourselves on supplying you with the safest, most reliable products available in the market today. Our standard all-rubber compressor hose is a great example of the attention to detail that we apply to all of our products. ALL RUBBER CONSTRUCTION EN2398 Type 4 Class A only rubber hose can quote this reference. Benefits over PVC products are greatly improved low temperature flexibility, better abrasion resistance and better coupling retention for safer site work. SAFETY CLAMPS we only use interlocking safety clamps to prevent potential coupling blow-out and potential injuries. NYLOC NUTS will prevent the bolts working loose due to repeated vibration. It is however recommended to always check clamps prior to use. WHIPCHECKS supplied as standard to promote safer working practice when connecting hose-hose and hose-tool/compressor. SAFETY LABEL a waterproof and highly visible warning label reinforces the safety message. Always check the integrity of hose, fittings and clamps prior to use. WHAT TO LOOK FOR! Avoid Excessive Oil Mist Standard rubber air hose liners are designed to withstand normal oil mist, however if subjected to heavy oil content on a prolonged basis the liner will start to soften and break down, resulting in soft spots on the hose cover. Any hose exhibiting these characteristics should be withdrawn from service. Proper compressor maintenance should alleviate any such problems

15 Hose Cover Blown Badly fitted or poor quality clamps can pierce the cover leading to a hose failure. Incorrect insertion of hose tails, over clamping or over swaging can damage the liner, which in turn can lead to the pressure finding a weak spot on the cover and blowing the cover. Always ensure that the pressure rating of the hose assembly, rather than just the hose itself, is suitable for the application in question. Hose is Kinking Using bend restrictors can significantly reduce the propensity for hose kinking. Mandrel built hoses with a thicker wall will offer much better kink resistance than a long length extruded hose. Never use a hose in an application where the minimum bend radius (M.B.R.) is exceeded, this can damage the integrity of the hose and also limit flow. If the reinforcement or braiding is damaged then this can lead to the hose failing under pressure. M.B.R. Water Hose WHAT TO LOOK FOR! Collapsed Hose Light walled PVC suction hoses are not suitable for all vacuum applications and if subjected to high vacuum pumps and viscous or heavy conveyants e.g. slurry, then they can collapse under vacuum. Always make your HD&F contact aware of the pump rating and media and we will supply you with the correct hose. TROUBLESHOOTING BY APPLICATION Coupling Failure (Bauer type) Lever lock (Bauer) fittings are widely used in construction, utilities, agricultural and pumping applications and are the ideal solution for quick coupling applications. However they are not suitable for high pressure applications (>10bar dependant on size), and in these applications flanges should be selected. Here at HD&F we guarantee the pressure rating of THE ASSEMBLY when dealing with wire armoured (rubber S&D) hose assemblies. Unless correctly assembled, it does not follow that a 10bar rated hose leads to a 10bar rated hose assembly. Always check the maximum pressure rating of the assembly you have ordered. Following months of extensive research and development, we have pioneered the swaging of large bore suction hoses with lever lock (Bauer) fittings. Swaged assemblies offer significantly better working pressures than clamped or BAND-IT strapped assemblies. Arco Ltd. All rights reserved. 13

16 TROUBLESHOOTING BY APPLICATION 14 Water Hose Layflat Hose Layflat hose (PVC) offers many advantages in application, but care must be taken when choosing the correct quality for the application. Cheap product with minimal reinforcement will not withstand external abrasion and care must be taken with regard to abrasive conveyants and pressure surges. We offer a range of high quality layflat hoses that will withstand working pressures up to 16bar. Fire Hose Abrasion Prevent Abrasion by using Rubberised Versions Fire brigade quality layflat hoses (BS6931 Type 3) is manufactured from a rubberised material that offers external abrasion. Other qualities of fire hose will suffer from cover abrasion and possibly burst if dragged over abrasive ground when full of water. Plastic Abrasion MDS Hose Medium Duty Suction hose is suitable for numerous applications but will suffer from external abrasion when regularly dragged along the floor. Look for the white nylon helix being exposed through the cover and replace the hose when this is evident. Dragon Hose Due to a pronounced hard PVC helix, Arcoflex Dragon will help alleviate external abrasion to the hose wall and in addition, physical effort will be reduced due to the low co-efficient of friction. Kinked Plastic Hose Exceeding the M.B.R. can cause permanent deformity & cracking Never exceed the minimum bend radius (M.B.R.) on a plastic hose. Dispose of any hose that exhibits stress fractures or is kinked in appearance. Heat / Atmospheric Exposure Care must be taken with thermoplastic materials. When subjected to excessive heat, compounds will soften and start to melt resulting in hose failure and potential bursting. At low temperatures PVC will become very rigid and brittle and will be difficult to manipulate. In these circumstances use Superelastic PVC or rubber compounds

17 Steam Hose Steam is a potentially deadly medium. At HD&F we strongly recommend that for any steam application, the end user procures a professionally manufactured assembly which ensures full compliance with EN6134. All steam hose assemblies manufactured by us at HD&F are 100% hydrostatically tested and certified. WHAT TO LOOK FOR! Using the Correct Hose Always use a Specific Steam branded Hose Ensure steam hose is clearly identified as a steam hose. It should have embossed branding stating working pressure, EN specifications and temperature rating. It is Vital to Check Temperature & Pressure Hose Limitations Consult us with your maximum working pressure and temperature and we will confirm that the assembly is fit for purpose. Check for Corrosion Regularly check clamps and fittings for corrosion. We can undertake this on your behalf as part of a hose management programme. If in doubt dispose of the old assembly and replace with new. TROUBLESHOOTING BY APPLICATION Steam hose lying on metal racks or installed around steel piping will dry out the hose, causing tube and cover cracking. Arco Ltd. All rights reserved. 15

18 TROUBLESHOOTING BY APPLICATION THE ENGINEERS GUIDE TO HOSE DUCTING & FITTING Steam Hose - Checking Fittings Are you using Boss Type Fittings? Always use recommended steam hose couplings and clamps. Check tightness of clamps after each use Check to see if clamp halves are touching. If they are, re-fit with smaller clamps to ensure correct tightness and grip around hose If in doubt contact us at HD&F Correct Installation Avoid Horizontal Hookups for Utility Steam Caution! Where observed, horizontal hookups for utility steam should be considered a risk to operators, and changed to vertical hookups immediately! Check Standpipe Installation Standpipes 12 or more above ground level should be fitted with elbows with outlets directed downward. Avoid Excess Bending Avoid excessive bending or flexing of hoses near the coupling and clamp. Straight line operation is preferred, but if bends are necessary as part of the operation, spring guards may help. Always support lengths of hose which are being used in a vertical application. Make Sure to Drain after use Drain hose after use to avoid tube damage before hose is put back into operation, to avoid the popcorn effect when re-energising the line as this will damage the liner leading to hose failure

19 Chemical & Hydrocarbon Composites WHAT TO LOOK FOR! Reduce Bending Stress Hose assemblies installed in a horizontal plane are prone to failure immediately below the fitting. Severe downward bends observed in the hose body at the fitting juncture may be evidence of over-bending and signal impending failure. This condition is common in hose body sizes >1 I.D. when liquids or solids are the transferred media. Increasing the length of the vertical drop further aggravates this condition. Use of 45 or 90 bends, bend restrictors, or hose slings are options available to correct this condition. Overbending Never use a composite hose beyond its designed minimum bend radius as this will lead to premature failure. Any composite hose that displays external damage to the wire must be isolated as the internal wire may also have been damaged or displaced which could lead to catastrophic failure of the assembly when pressurised. 20 TROUBLESHOOTING BY APPLICATION Composites WHAT TO LOOK FOR! Corrosion and Damage Regularly check composite hoses for damaged covers, abrasion and chemical attack. Fittings and ferrules should also be checked for fractures or mechanical damage. If in doubt remove from service and contact us at HD&F and we will advise you if the hose assembly is fit for service and whether expensive hose fittings can be salvaged. Hose Slings Always use appropriate hose slings on large bore marine composites. Fitting Corrosion Inspection of the sealing threads must ensure that they are capable of full engagement. Caution! Flammables and Combustibles Where applied in flammable(s) or combustible(s) service, oxidation of fitting threads may compromise static bonding of the hose assembly. Where observed, oxides should be removed prior to continued hose assembly service. Installation beyond design limitations of Hose Installation of hose assemblies in loops or bends less than the design minimum bend radius will result in hose deformation or collapse, impeding or stopping media flow. 21 PTFE & METALLICS WHAT TO LOOK FOR! Hose over-pressurisation (Flexible Metallic) Evidence of severely-reduced flexibility of the hose body is indicative of this condition. Over-pressurisation of corrugated flexible metal hose will permanently deform the bellows and reduce expected life cycle and may cause stress cracking and catastrophic failure. Planned movement Planned movement of the hose assembly should occur in a single plane only. Multiple planes of movement in application may induce torsion and cause premature failure. Planned movement of a hose assembly should be based on the live length (exposed length of the hose body available for flexure) capabilities of the assembly, NOT the overall length. 'Ballooned' Braid Observation of ballooned reinforcing braid (especially in flexible metal hose) is evidence of axial compression. TROUBLESHOOTING BY APPLICATION Damaged Braid Observation of damaged reinforcing braid may be evidence of axial extension. Axial Compression / Extension Hose assemblies aren t expansion joints. Planned axial compression and/or extension is a misapplication that will cause premature failure. Extreme Bending Observation of extreme bends or deformations is evidence of movement beyond the capabilities of the hose assembly. Arco Ltd. All rights reserved. 19

22 TROUBLESHOOTING BY APPLICATION THE ENGINEERS GUIDE TO HOSE DUCTING & FITTING PTFE & Metallics Hose Cover Abrasion Avoid Contact with Coarse Abrasive Surfaces Planned movement and routing of a hose assembly should consider and avoid contact with abrasive surfaces that may cause premature and catastrophic failure. Where necessary, an external sleeve should be added to either the hose assembly or the contacting surface to reduce wear. Braid & Cover Damage Observation of cover chafing or erosion is evidence of repetitive motion against an abrasive substrate. Rupture or severe abrasion of reinforcement in flexible metal or PTFE-lined hose is a prelude to catastrophic failure. Observation of this condition is cause for immediate retirement of the hose assembly. Check Fittings and Method of Attachment Evidence of fitting movement may be a precursor to catastrophic release. The tailpiece of a hose fitting should be fully inserted into the hose body or encased within the crimp/swage ferrule. A gap between the hose and insertion limit of the hosetail should be interpreted as movement or slippage of the fitting insert out of the hose body. Evidence of hose release from the crimp/swage area indicates impending and catastrophic failure. This is a primary failure of the hose assembly due to over-pressurisation or mechanical stress. Retire from service immediately! Clamping Directly Onto Pipe/Tube Will cause Premature Failure & Tear Pressurised hose should never be clamped directly onto either pipe or tube; a hose coupling and clamp should be employed. This condition should be considered a risk to the safety of your personnel and corrected immediately. Check Chemical Compatibility Is the Hose Suitable for its Application? 23 Metallic Hose Installation Guide Design & Installation Considerations Flexible metal hose is usually flexed as shown on this page. To obtain maximum reliability it is essential to calculate the length of an assembly that will not be flexed below the minimum bend radius. The formulae shown here give a guide determining the length of tube required. They are based on standard applications using our current product range. Please discuss any variations with us at HD&F. TROUBLESHOOTING BY APPLICATION Avoid sharp bends and torsional twisting. Keep flexing in one plane. L = Minimum live length excluding end fitting ferrule. R = Minimum bend raduis. 24 Hose Reels WHAT TO LOOK FOR! Fire Hose Reels For Emergency use Only! First aid hose reels should never be installed as a working hose reel and should only ever be employed as a fire prevention device. We will be happy to give you advice on selecting the correct hose reels. Check Minimum Bend Radius The outside diameter of the hose reel hub must be of greater value than the minimum bend diameter (2x min. bend radius, measured from inner wall of hose body) of the hose to be applied. Observation of severe bending of the hose at the hose-to-reel connection shall be cause for re-plumbing. The addition of adapters from the reel to the hose assembly should not cause over-bending immediately behind the hose fitting. Failure to consider these conditions may contribute to premature failure of the hose assembly. No Hose Races! Hose lengths should be retracted slowly and hand fed back onto the hose reel. Allowing the hose length to race back onto the reel is potentially dangerous and will prematurely damage the spring mechanism on the reel.
