1 MIA SHALOM POLICIES AND GUIDELINES (Updated May 22, 2015) MIA Shalom is a mountain camp facility for young women. It provides a setting where the Young Women camp program can be implemented. It is maintained, operated, and used by stakes in Orem and Provo. Months of operation are June 1 through September 30. General Camp Rules Biffys---bring your own toilet paper (septic safe preferred). Hair washing is not allowed in the showers. There is no hot water. Check In and Check Out----report to the missionary couple at camp Cleaning---clean what you use: cabins, biffys, amphitheater, pavilion, and trails before leaving. Conduct---modest dress, appropriate language (see For the Strength of Youth) Cooking---allowed outside of cabins only, propane stoves are recommended (no liquid fuels). Dress Standard Long pants Close toed and heeled shoes (no flip flops, sandals, crocs) Shirts with sleeves Modest sleepwear Fires---allowed in designated fireboxes or inside cement fire rings. Fires are to be attended always. Have shovel, rake, and 2 buckets of water close by. Garbage---deposit in the North area dumpster. Garbage cans to be lined with plastic bags provided, and are located in the biffys. Gate---Gate is locked Saturday at 6:00 p.m. and remains locked until Monday morning at 6:00 a.m. Hold Harmless Agreement---required for groups not directly sponsored by a unit of the Church. Lake---no swimming or wading in the lake. A certified lifeguard must be present during all water activities. Activities allowed at the lake are canoeing and kayaking. NOT allowed at Mia Shalom: No Pets, no dogs, no horses No Generators No Heaters No Hunting No Cutting Trees No Candles, Liquid Fuels, Gasoline, or Fireworks No Firearms, Archery, or anything that launches a projectile No Wheeled vehicles--- trail bikes, motorcycles, skates, handcarts, etc. No High Adventure Activities (direct question to committee) No ATV s (used by camp missionaries and committee members only)

2 Phone---Phone at the main cabin is for emergency use only. There is no cell phone service. Quiet Time---begins at 11:00 p.m. RV Trailers---are to be used with permission only; no water or sewage hookups are allowed. Equipment trailers are permitted. Vehicles---are to be parked in designated areas. No riding in the back of pick-up trucks, trailers, etc. Water---Please conserve water. There is no hot water available at camp. Wood---bring your own fire wood. (Please don t bring junk wood, pressed wood, or pallets.) Word of Wisdom---is to be observed at all times. Additional YW Camp Rules years of age---if a young woman will turn 12 years old prior to Sept. 1 st and will enter 7 th grade, she may attend camp as a first-year camper. Camp Phone---is for emergency use. Stake Presidents have the caretaker cabin phone number. Dress Standard Long pants No leggings--- For the Strength of Youth: Immodest clothing is any clothing this is tight, sheer, or reveling in any other manner. Close toed and heeled shoes Shirts with sleeves Modest sleepwear---long pants; no tank tops or shorts Key---stake YW President or stake Camp Director will be given a key to access the phone at camp to be used for EMERGENCIES only. The stake leader should accompany the girl needing to make the call. The key is not to be given to anyone, including adult leaders or YCL s. The key is to remain with the Stake YW President or Stake Camp Director at all times until the end of the camp week. Turn in the key at the end of camp, with the check-out sheet. A fee will be assessed for lost keys. Electronics---Stake leaders can authorize limited use of electronics for the purpose of cameras, scriptures, & certification. Stake and ward leaders should manage electronic usage at camp and those bringing devices do so at their own risk. Devices should be left in airplane mode and not used for music, games, calls, texts or internet use. No devices are to be charged at the caretakers cabin. First Aid---Provide a CPR & First Aid trained person, in each Stake camp, for the entire week. Gate--- Two married priesthood brethren are needed to supervise the main gate into camp through the night on weekdays. NOT allowed during YW Camp: No young men

3 No single men---unless approved by the Stake President No children or infants No pets No guns Permission---parental permission slips and medical release forms must be completed. Pregnancy---It is recommended that pregnant leaders not attend camp. (Doctor approval is encouraged when attending.) Priesthood---Two Melchizedek Priesthood leaders, per stake, must be in camp. Transportation for Provo/Orem Stakes----Young women will be transported by bus to camp. Exceptions can be made for youth camp leaders at the discretion of the stake president. (Wards should not be making decisions for the 1 st -4 th year girls on Stake Camp Transportation.) Drivers must be at least 21 years of age. If a young woman is not going up, or returning with the group, the parent or legal guardian should come to the camp to drop off or pick up the child. Advance notice for such situations is required, especially in the case of a parent arriving at camp to take their daughter home. Stakes should alert their supervising area missionary couples. Very few exceptions apply to this policy. Report bus rider numbers at Check In Wood---Stakes are to bring their own firewood the Saturday or Monday prior to camp. No YM should bring or deliver wood. Please don t bring junk wood, pressed wood, or pallets. Good To Know Bathhouses BIFFY S Clean two times each day. Cleaning supplies are furnished by the camp and are available at the caretaker s cabin. All floors (including stalls) must be swept, toilets scrubbed, sinks scrubbed, mirrors shined, equipment returned to storage. All floors should be washed with a hose when you do the final cleaning at the end of your camp week. Toilet paper is to be supplied by wards or stakes (septic safe preferred). No wet wipes down toilets (preferably no wet wipes in biffy). Deposit sanitary supplies in cans or bags, not in toilets! Toilets flush slowly. They do not tolerate much paper. The camp will supply liquid soap and containers. Stakes need to provide cleaning rags and gloves if desired Hair clogs the drains. Do not wash hair in the sinks or showers. Fill buckets to wash hair. Do not let taps run. Use water sparingly. Cabin Areas

4 No writing or carving on cabins, bathhouses, structures, trees, etc. Use only battery-operated lights in cabins. No cooking in cabins. Cooking should always be done outside. Nails must not be used in, or on, the cabins or buildings. No tape on cabin doors; tape pulls off the paint. Please use magnets to attach decorations to doors. Nothing should ever be attached to, or put on, the roofs of cabins or buildings. Thumb tacks may be used to attach decorations to wooden structures. Check-in At the beginning of your camp you will be given a check-in form. Please provide bus rider numbers on check-in form Please note any damages or repairs needed Give the check-in form to the missionaries (one form per stake). Check-out At the conclusion of your camp go through your campground again using the check-out form and make note of any area that needs repair or maintenance. Complete a final check out with the missionaries. Cabin areas, roads and lake area cleaned inspected by an adult leader Bathhouse cleaned inspected by an adult leader Report broken items and repair needs to camp missionaries Cost for vandalism, including graffiti, will be assessed to the stake of the responsible person or persons Confidence Course Have an adult (at least 21 years of age) with your group at all times. Equipment should stay in the course area. Do not allow anyone to use the course without proper supervision. Use the equipment for the outlined games. A volleyball can found in the boat house. Cooking Areas Build fires only in fireboxes or inside cement fire rings. Propane stoves may be used outside of cabins only. Remove unburned trash and debris from fire areas before leaving camp. If ashes need to be removed, please contact the missionaries. Please store grates for fire rings under a cabin if not in use. Disaster Fire: All campers go to the lake area and assemble in cabin groups. Stand between the lake and the road. Do not return to cabin areas until instructed to do so by the missionaries. Do not leave camp and go into the canyon unless instructed to do so by the camp missionaries.

5 Earthquake: Remain in your assigned camp area. Do not go in damaged cabins. Report medical needs to the camp missionaries. In case of severe storms, campers are safer in cabins than in vehicles attempting to flee. Fire Prevention Review fire prevention policies with young women and leaders each year at the beginning of camp (see Young Women Camp Manual, 32-34). Locate fire extinguisher at each cabin. Leaders should know how to use fire extinguishers. Teach proper use of fire extinguishers. Fires are not permitted in trail areas for any reason! Garbage The camp provides large plastic bags for the garbage cans. Please pick them up at the missionary cabin. Place plastic bags in the garbage cans before filling them with garbage. Burn everything that will burn. Smash and compact everything that will not burn. Leave plastic bags filled with garbage inside the garbage cans. Transport all cans with garbage inside to the dumpster. This is a stake or ward responsibility. Put garbage inside dumpster. Take garbage cans back to cabin areas. Stakes and wards are responsible for taking home all items to be recycled. Parking Vehicles are to be parked only in central parking lots during camp week. Roadways and areas near cabins are to be used briefly for loading and unloading only, after which cars should be moved to central parking lots. Do not move logs or other barriers for any reason. Service Projects Clean up and conservation within your camp area is the best service project. Contact the MIA Shalom Committee prior to your camp to discuss specific projects. Trails Stay on the trails. Do not build fires on trails. Carry out all litter. Do not pick flowers or foliage, unless missionaries instruct to help eliminate certain types of weeds. Do not break beaver homes.

6 No wheeled vehicles such as trail bikes, motorcycles, skates, handcarts, etc. on trails. Stay off the snowfield. Overnight camping is not permitted anywhere outside of each stake s assigned cabin area. The exception is the 4 th Year backpack experience, which must be scheduled with the MIA Shalom committee. Water Drink lots of water Be water conscientious No constantly running taps No propane water heaters for showers. Fill a bucket to wash hair at the outside taps. In the event of drought, stakes may need to transport water from home Waterfront The lifeguard is the responsible authority at the waterfront. Stake and ward leaders work under her direction. Each stake should provide adult leaders to supervise waterfront activities. (Recommended: one leader per eight to ten girls.) Young women may participate in waterfront activities only when an adult leader from their stake is in the dock area. An adult stake leader should be present while girls are participating in waterfront activities. She will work with the lifeguard to maintain safety and adherence to the rules. The lifeguard gives lake instruction and canoe safety to each group. The lifeguard will determine whether weather conditions are unsafe for canoeing. No one is permitted on the dock, or in the dock area, when waterfront is closed. No swimming, wading or swamping of canoes is permitted. Wearing life jackets is mandatory. Wood Piles Wood is to be unloaded in designated woodpile areas within each camp. No wood pallets, wafer board, pressed board, or other junk wood is to be brought to camp.
