Hunt Hill is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit nature sanctuary supported by donations, memberships, program attendance and grants. Donated to National Audubon in the 1950 s and now run locally by a dedicated group of volunteers known as the Friends of Hunt Hill Audubon Sanctuary (FOHHAS). With a free lease of the land from Audubon, FOHHAS has been managing the property since the 1980 s with an emphasis on nature programs and camps for all ages. As a nature sanctuary we encourage a leave no trace approach to exploring and appreciating the natural world. WHAT CAN I DO AT HUNT HILL? Our facility boasts 10 miles of hiking trails through 400 acres of forest, meadow, glacial lakes and bogs plus a main campus featuring dormitories, library, barn dining hall and program learning center. Guests can hike our trails; rent our facilities for birthdays, weddings, family reunions; attend programs; schedule school or bus groups; and enjoy weekend retreats in our rustic cabins. Programs with preregistration dates will be marked with *** Preregistration allows us to arrange appropriate program spaces, order specialty materials, organize educator schedules and create a great program for our participants. 5 2011 PROGRAM SERIES NATURE AT NIGHT Join Hunt Hill for evening programs that explore nature at night! Program times and costs vary; see the Month-byMonth Calendar of Events starting on page 10 for more information. February 19: Snowshoeing ***March 4: Stargazing with Mike Lynch June 11: Nocturnal Animals August 13: Full Moon Lake Canoeing WINTER SOUP LUNCHES Come warm yourself and enjoy a bowl of soup, camaraderie and perhaps a little discussion about nature. Each month will feature a topic for conversation led by Hunt Hill staff. Lunches will be the second Tuesday of each month, JanuaryApril anytime from 12:00pm to 1:00pm. Donations are accepted. January 11 February 8 March 8 April 12 GRANDparent ADVENTURES Grandparents (and/or parents, aunts, uncles, kinship, etc.) are encouraged to bring youth out to Hunt Hill for these afternoon programs. Each program features learning activities, games, optional swim time and are scheduled from 1:00pm 4:00pm on select Wednesdays during the summer. Cost is $10/person or $35 for a family of 4 or more. June 22: Bog Squishing *** July 27: Go Fly a Kite August 10: Survival ***GOING BACK: A Craft and Green Living Series Learn the trades once considered common knowledge in these handson programs. With the help of local experts participants are taught, given all materials and guided in producing the items covered in that topic. Program times and costs vary. All have at least a 2-week preregistration requirement. CAKES AT THE LAKE Cakes at the Lake, sponsored by the Long Lake Preservation Association, is an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast which features plain and specialty pancakes, sausage, fresh fruit and beverages. Following the breakfast, guests are encouraged to stay for a free environmental program. Serving starts at 8:00am and ends at 10:00am when the program begins. 6 *** ADULT RESIDENTIAL CAMPS *** Pa Svenska: SWEDISH LANGUAGE and CULTURE IMMERSION Sunday, June 12 - Friday, June 17 During the week, participants receive language lessons, learn how to cook a number of popular Swedish foods, enjoy fika, examine the culture, history and politics of Sweden and learn all about this intriguing country. Daily lessons, delicious Swedish dining, camaraderie, a genuine midsummer celebration, social evening programs including: lectures, movies and live music as well as optional crafts make this camp experience once in a lifetime! Camp is all-inclusive and includes: all meals, refreshments and snacks; overnight accommodations; experienced educational staff; extra optional craft and environmental activities; and all program supplies. Hunt Hill s Spanish Immersion camp fuses education, native speaking instructors and a beautiful setting into a wonderful week of learning, laughing and fun. Participants can look forward to a schedule of daily language lessons, true Spanish meals, daily social hours with traditional Spanish appetizers and nightly culture programs for a memorable experience. During the week, campers will have the opportunity to explore our natural setting through optional hikes and lake canoeing. 7 *** ADULT RESIDENTIAL CAMPS *** NORTHWOODS BIRDING CAMP Friday, June 17 - Friday, June 24 Learn from nationally known guest experts like Laura Erickson of Cornell Lab of Ornithology and For the Birds radio program, Steve Betchkal award-winning journalist and author of All of This and Robins Too..., and former National Audubon Camp Director Terry Dorsey! There will be guided fieldtrips, including Crex Meadows, opportunities to expand your Life List of birds and special programs geared towards all levels of birders. Guests will also enjoy trips to the first National Wild and Scenic River the Namekagon, additional birding fieldtrips and much more. Participants new to birding and those who cannot attend the whole week, are encouraged to attend the weekend sessions, Friday - Sunday. Those looking for a more in-depth birding experience should be sure to attend the whole week. Reduced cost is available for those staying off-site. Camp is all-inclusive and includes: all meals, refreshments and snacks; overnight accommodations; experienced educational staff; specialty speakers, field trips, extra optional environmental activities; and program supplies. No experience is necessary. You will create your own custom-made 17 foot, 40 pound wooden kayaks that, with proper care, will last a lifetime! Camp is all-inclusive, covering: all meals, refreshments and snacks; overnight accommodations; experienced woodworking staff; extra optional environmental activities; and all tools and materials to build your own kayak. 8 *** YOUTH OVERNIGHT CAMPS ***HUNT HILL CAMPER SLUMBER PARTIES Tuesday, July 12 Wednesday, July 13 Ages 6-9 Wednesday, July 13 - Thursday, July 14 Ages 8-11 Youth are invited to bring their friends and enjoy this special overnight-double-day-camp adventure. Campers will spend the first day at camp and as other day campers make their way home, slumber party campers will enjoy more swim time, a camp dinner, campfire songs, stories and treats and an awesome overnight in our dorms. In the morning Hunt Hill will provide breakfast and then it s back for a second day of day camp before heading home! Slumber Parties include two days of day camp, overnight accommodation and supervision, dinner, evening activities, snacks and breakfast. PREREGISTRATION AND PAYMENT ARE REQUIRED NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, JULY 8. $20/child for overnight + cost of the 2 day camps (See opposite page for cost of day camps.) Camp is all-inclusive and includes: all meals, refreshments, and snacks; overnight accommodations; experienced educational staff; specialty speakers, field trips, environmental activities; and program supplies. 9 Y outh ages 5-12 are invited to these day-long programs which feature learning activities, games, swimming, crafts and small ageappropriate groups. Camp starts at 8:30am and ends at 4:00pm. Cost of camp is $35/day/camper. Register 2 weeks early and pay $30/day/camper. Sign up for 5 or more camps throughout the summer and pay $25/day/camper. Pick 5 and pay just $25/camp/kid! *** YOUTH DAY CAMPS JUNE 6/27: Rockin Reptiles - We ll slither, crawl and hiss as we learn about snakes, skinks and turtles. 6/28: Frogs and Salamanders - Test your frog hunting skills, find out why salamanders are slippery and role play metamorphosis. 6/29: Birds of Prey - Swoop like a hawk, watch like an owl and hunt like an eagle in this camp! 6/30: Nature Art - Using the materials from nature, campers will create a variety of crafts to bring home. JULY 7/1: Water Wonderland - Slide like an otter, muck for water animals and enjoy water games all day. 7/5: Where s Waldo - Uncover the secret world of organisms too tiny to see with our naked eye. 7/6: Rockin Rocks - Go on a rock hunt, discover the rocks at Hunt Hill and make a tasty rock treat. 7/7: Fun with Pets -Through hands-on instruction with pets, learn how to properly care for and raise various pet-friendly animals. 7/8: Fantastic Fishing- Spend the day at the lakes of Hunt Hill as we cast, bait and catch fish! Great for all levels of fishermen and fisherladies! 7/11: Incredible Insects - We ll hop, fly and scurry as we catch and I.D. insects, learn about their cool adaptations and even hold some of the largest insects in the world. 7/12: Peg-leg Pirate Camp Dress in your pirate best as we find buried treasure, escape trouble and learn about the lives of these sea lubers. 7/13: Sensational Senses - Campers will help us uncover the hidden worlds of Hunt Hill through activities and games that hone our senses. 7/14: Survival - Working in teams we ll build shelters, make fire and find food and water in the wild. 7/15: Wild Babies- Discover the family life of kits, cubs, cheepers and many more wild babies. 7/25: Pioneer Camp - Travel back in time and discover the lives of pioneer children nearly 200 years ago. 7/26: Butterflies - Chase butterflies, learn to raise them and even create your own! 7/27: Dinosaurs - Excavate dinosaur bones, explore the world of dinosaurs and all their cool adaptations. 7/28: Mad Scientists - Conduct colorful, explosive and hair raising experiments in this scientific camp. 7/29: Canoeing - Paddle, game and explore our 4-lake chain in this canoeing adventure! Not recommended for campers under age 8. AUGUST 8/1: SpongeBog Square- Plants- Join the Spongebog crew as we explore a different water habitat, the bog. 8/2: Native American- Step back in time to experience the games that helped youth become skilled hunter and gatherers. A fun look at history! 8/3: Marvelous Mammals- Listen like a bat, howl like a wild hunter and store your food for the winter like our furry friends. 8/4: Claws, Quills and Fangs- Explore the frightening, and ferocious weapons animals use to protect themselves. 8/5: Fantastic Flowers- Identify flowers, create your own bouquet and enjoy the fantastic world of flowers. 9

FEBRUARY ***GOING BACK: Basket Making Saturday, February 5 9:00am 1:30pm Join basketmaker Phyllis Knutson as we learn how to create our own round bun baskets. All materials are provided and everyone will leave with a basket ready to use! PREREG- ISTRATION AND PAYMENT ARE REQUIRED BY THURSDAY, JANUARY 27. $28/basket WINTER SOUP LUNCHES Tuesday, February 8 12:00pm - 1:00pm ***SNOWSHOE MAKING at WITC Tuesday, February 8 and Thursday, February 10 6:00pm - 9:00pm Participants will create traditional wooden framed Ojibwa style snowshoes. These snowshoes feature pointed toe and tail and are sized to fit your body. PREREGISTRATION AND PAYMENT REQUIRED THROUGH WITC ( ext. 5230) BY FRIDAY, JANUARY 21. ***WINTER CAMPING Saturday, February 19 Sunday, February 20 10:00am 10:00am Campers will spend the day learning techniques to winter camping and then set up an overnight outdoor camp. Enjoy a cool winter night around a campfire, share stories, go on an optional snowshoe hike and fall asleep under the stars. Our Learning Center will be heated as an alternative sleeping location for those who choose to use it. PREREGISTRATION and PAYMENT REQUIRED BY FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 11. $10/person for day or $25/person for overnight, food & select camp equip. NATURE at NIGHT: Snowshoeing Saturday, February 19 6:00pm 8:00pm Observe the night sky, discover how animals and plants adapt to the cold weather and explore the trails of Hunt Hill all on snowshoes. Headlamps/flashlights and snowshoes are needed. Preregistration is requested but not required. $5/person MARCH ***NATURE AT NIGHT: Stargazing Friday, March 4 7:00pm Discover constellations, receive a star map packet and get the chance to look through one of the biggest mobile telescopes in the Upper M idwest in this family friendly program with the guidance of Mike Lynch, WCCO meteorologist. This event will occur regardless of weather conditions and is sponsored by Shell Lake Community Education and Hunt Hill. PREREGISTRATION AND PAYMENT ARE REQUIRED BY THURS- DAY, MARCH 3 $12/person or $30/family of 3 or more WINTER SOUP LUNCHES Tuesday, March 8 12:00pm - 1:00pm ***GOING BACK: Herb Gardens Saturday, March 12 9:00am 11:30am Explore the tasty world of herbs as we learn about various herbs, how to grow them and ways to use and preserve them. Join local and nationally known presenters as we explore the simple ways you can help collect important data for different organizations around the nation.
