5 Tending a fire is an art. Oxygen is required to keep the fire burning. Handöl s engineers have developed an efficient system that allows the air to interact with the energy of the fire and convert it into comfortable heat. The air is used in three different ways. When you light the fire, cool air is drawn from the room into the stove and is heated via ingeniously-designed convection channels in the stove. The air soon starts to flow into the room from the heating outlets a process known as convection. The control on the stove allows you to regulate the inflow of air to your stove and thus the intensity of the fire. Before the air is drawn along the channels into the firebox, it is preheated to a very high temperature. The air swirls around powerfully, keeping the glass door free from soot. This is known as Clean Glass Technology. Pulling down the control to close the air intake does not put out the fire but activates the Clean Burning System instead. Air is supplied to the firebox via a system of channels that ensure the stove is never starved of oxygen and continues to burn cleanly. This means efficient, environmentally-correct combustion, even at a low heat output. 5

Nowadays, fire fascinates us with its wonderful crackling and the heat it produces. Social progress has fashioned the practical and aesthetically-appealing fireplaces that we have in our homes today. They have even become an important home decor item - indeed, often part of the furniture. Sitting in front of the fire, enjoying its warmth and comfort, is still one of the main pleasures in life. Designing a stove could be compared to creating a warm, luxurious feeling of comfort for you in your home. At Handöl, we have accumulated many decades of experience of producing fireplaces that look perfectly in place in the modern home. 9 There is no place like home. You have to agree, it s wonderful to come home to a warm stove. What a lifesaver if there s a power cut! And think how pleasant that extra heat is when the cold wind is howling outside. And there s something special about sitting with your loved ones in the firelight. Logs need to be dry, with a moisture content of no more than 20 percent, to achieve maximum heat output. The wood dries if left, neatly stacked, for a longer period of time and then taken indoors the day before it is to be burned. Make sure you get the fire going quickly. A smouldering fire is not good for the environment, the chimney or neighbourly relations. Handöl s stoves are easy to light and are thoroughly tested for safety in our laboratory to ensure they provide reliable operation. We also conduct numerous fire tests to achieve maximum combustion and make sure the glass doors don t become covered in soot. C 200 Cooling period Handöl 54T It s easy to keep the room warm with a stove. You can even heat most of the house when conditions are favourable. If you choose a soapstone model, you ll be able to store the heat for a longer time. Tests on a Handöl 54T showed that, after the fire had burned out, the temperature gradually fell from 23 to 18 after 12 hours h 9

10 NORDIC ECOLABEL Green fire. No, of course there s no such thing... but if you have a stove that carries the Swan eco-label, you re taking your responsibility for the environment seriously. A stove that burns as cleanly as possible is a sound environmental choice. Technology has progressed and these days our stoves burn with great efficiency and for a long time. When you buy a stove with the Swan eco-label, you are investing in a heat source that delivers high efficiency. This means that a large proportion of the energy stored in the fuel is converted into heat for your home. Wood is a renewable fuel and an environmentally-sound choice. Unlike fossil fuels, biofuel is a renewable source of energy that does not contribute to the greenhouse effect. When we burn wood in our stoves, the same amount of carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere as when vegetation decomposes naturally. Fossil fuels are extracted from the earth s crust. When they are burned, the percentage of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increases. That contributes to the greenhouse effect. The Swan eco-label sets high standards for the materials we use to produce our stoves. Toxic heavy metals must not be used in the plastic parts or in the finishing of the fireplace components. Nor may unnecessary flame retardants and chemicals be used in the plastic parts. These requirements make it possible to recycle materials without toxic emissions. All of our stoves have carried the CE and P Marks for many years. We are now raising our standards even higher by ensuring our products meet the requirements for the Swan eco-label award. When we were awarded our P Mark licence, we had it in writing that our stoves fulfil requirements that are considerably more stringent than the European requirements (the CE Mark). The environmental requirements for stoves imposed by the Swan eco-label are highly stringent and the tests are performed by independent laboratories. Moreover, the requirements are updated every four years to keep them in line with environmental, technical and scientific developments. ONE-TOUCH-POWER All Handöl stoves are fitted with a one-touch-power button for precision output control. This button on the front allows you to simply regulate the combustion to achieve the best output. ASH-PAN The practical, built-in ash-pan is integrated with the other designs, making it easy to empty. GRATE Inside the firebox is a practical and stylish grate with wide slots. H50 FLANGES Flanges beneath the top of the Handöl 50 heat the top of the stove. This spreads the heat faster into the room. 56 HOW THE HANDÖL STOVE WORKS RED ARROWS CONVECTION AIR The cool room air is drawn into the convection zones. The air is heated and rises, and within a few minutes the hot air flows out into the room. The cool air from the room continues flowing in at the bottom and is then heated. This is called convection. BLUE ARROWS PRIMARY COMBUSTION AIR The amount of combustion air, and therefore the intensity of the fire, can be regulated using the control on the stove. The combustion air is heated to extremely high temperatures and is emitted into the firebox where it flushes the inside of the glass. Handöl s stoves are also designed for the connection of combustion air directly from outside. GREEN ARROWS CLEAN BURNING SYSTEM The Clean Burning System contributes to environmentally-friendly combustion in the entire heat output range of 3-7 kw. When the air control on the front of the stove is closed, the Clean Burning System takes effect. Preheated air is supplied to the fire through a duct system and an air distributor in the rear of the stove. This means the stove is never short of oxygen, but always burns cleanly and efficiently. In addition, it burns for much longer. 56
