The Shelves are Bare Stores can run out of food in 24 hours
All transportation has come to a halt (no cars, trucks, trains, or airplanes are moving)
All utilities have been cut off (no water, electricity, gas, sewer, refuse disposal)

All businesses have closed (no food, drugs, clothing, hardware, household goods, contractors)
All communications have been knocked out (no phone, TV, radio, Internet, newspapers, mail)
We are from the Government and we are here to help! Give us your weapons!
If this were an actual emergency, what would you do? If All of this lasts for 72 hours 30 days 6 months 1 year: How will you react? How will others react? How will you provide for your family, maintain security, and ensure your freedom?
More importantly, what are you willing to do before the emergency strikes?
No man can be truly free who is dependent upon another for his daily bread. To exercise our God-given free agency, we must be able to live an independent life, providing for ourselves and our families through industry and thrift. Liberty Through Self-Reliance
Emergency preparedness is not a collection of supplies, but a mind set that encourages you to anticipate challenges and avoid potentially negative affects through advanced planning Developing a pool of knowledge and honing your emergency response skills will make you better able to protect your family when the need arises.
Following checklists and purchasing supplies can be a great help in an emergency, but knowing why something is on the list, and how to get the most out of it, can be even more important.
Emergency planning cannot wait. It is something that should have been started yesterday. Today may be too late, and putting it off until tomorrow may cost you your freedom. Waiting until a disaster strikes to make preparations is the surest way to lose control of your life and become dependent on others.
72-Hour Kit Checklist The purpose of the 72-hour kit is for you and your family to be able to sustain life, without any outside help, in case of emergency. You do not need to purchase an expensive premade kits. Many of these items are already in your home. Backpacks are good should you need to leave your vehicle.

Importance of Adequate Water When faced with a survival situation, clean drinkable water is often the most important consideration. People have survived without food for weeks or even months, but go without water for even just one day and the survivor will be in desperate straights indeed.
Knowing that water is by far the most important nutrient for the human body (besides oxygen) and, in particular, during a survival situation when finding potable water may not be easy, the question becomes - just how long can the human body survive without adequate water?
To maintain a high level of health and efficiency even in ideal environments, a minimum of two quarts of clean water per day per person is the generally accepted rule of thumb. In very hot or cold or very dry environments, or if you are physically active, two quarts of water a day may not be enough to sustain life over a period of days or weeks.
Emergency Water Guidelines Water Storage Never store water on concrete. The chemicals will leach and contaminate your water.
General Store a minimum of 2 quarts per day, per person, for personal consumption. Store a minimum of 2 gallons per day, per person, to satisfy personal consumption, cooking, and sanitation needs. Locate stored water only where potential leakage will not damage your home or apartment. Protect stored water from light and heat.
Municipal Water Supply Under normal conditions, water from a chlorinated municipal water supply will not need any further treatment and can be stored in clean (preferably sterile), food-grade containers. If the municipal water supply has been contaminated, the water must be treated before storage or consumption.
Commercially Packaged Water - Commercially bottled water in polyethylene terephthalate ( PETE ) plastic containers may be purchased and stored for emergency use. PETE containers are onetime use containers - do not refill them. Follow the container s best if used by dates as a rotation guideline.
Self-Storage Chlorinated municipal water can be stored safely under the following conditions: Use only food-grade containers made of PETE plastic or high-density polyethylene ( HDPE ) plastic. (HDPE #2, #4, and #5 are the safest for long-term storage.) 55 gallon drums are the most economical. Prepare a sanitizing solution by adding 1 teaspoon of liquid household chlorine bleach (5 to 6% sodium hypochlorite) to one quart of water. Use bleach without thickeners, scents, or additives. Clean, sanitize, and thoroughly rinse all containers prior to use. Do not use plastic milk jugs. They do not clean or seal well, and become brittle over time. Do not use containers previously used to store non-food products (such as cleaning solutions). Containers should be emptied and refilled at least once a year.
Water Filtration (Removes most particles, chemicals, and bacteria, but will not remove all viruses) Personal Filters Small, portable, hand-pumped filters, manufactured by Katadyn, are available for short-term personal use. They should filter to a minimum of 0.3 microns and be able to produce at least 200 gallons. Family Filters For larger scale water filtration, counter-top, gravity-fed filters can provide up to 4 gallons of water per day without pumping. Katadyn and Berkey manufacture quality counter-top filters
Water Purification (Kills bacteria and viruses, but will not remove particles or chemicals) Chemical - Non-chlorinated water should be treated with bleach. If the water is cloudy or has debris in it, run the water through a coffee filter first. Add 1/8 of a teaspoon (8 drops) of liquid household chlorine bleach (5 to 6% sodium hypochlorite, no scents or additives) for every gallon of water, ¼ cup per 55-gallon drum. Boiling - Boil water for at least one full minute at a full boil. Cool before using.
within Ultra-Violet Ultra-violet light a certain frequency range will kill bacteria and viruses. Ultra-violet devices must have quartz lenses. pens are available for small scale personal use. Distillation water vapor can be collected in a cup hanging from an inverted lid over a heated pot, or by plastic sheeting in a makeshift solar still. Distilled water contains no particles, chemicals, bacteria, or viruses.
Getting started: Short-term food storage Much of what sits in your cupboards and pantry right now are foods that can be stored for the short-term (3 months to 2 years). If you are beginning a food storage program the bulk of your food should sit in this category. There is a saying Store what you eat and eat what you store. I am a big believer in this as common everyday foods compared to many specialty long-term foods are relatively inexpensive and readily available at your local grocery store.
A well-stocked three-month pantry allows you to cook and enjoy most recipes without running to the store! Begin building your food storage by buying 2 3 extra items every time you shop at the grocery store. A few cans here, some bags and boxes there, and it will begin to add up.
LDS Model (Latter Day Saints) The Mormon Church has been doing this for years. Why re-invent the wheel? You will find numerous sites online for resources, planning, guides and tips. The Mormon Basics Wheat, Milk, Honey and Salt
Long Term Food Storage Tip #1 One important factor that people constantly overlook is the fact that your food storage needs to be something that you will actually eat. Food storage for the sake of food storage will do you no good unless you will eat it and stay alive.
Long Term Food Storage Tip #2 Date your goods with a sharpie. Keep older product toward the front. First in First out. Rotate your inventory.

Buy in Bulk It is much less expensive and you will get food you will eat. If you don t like it now you won t like it later. Check out places like Cash and Carry, United Grocers. Buy 50 pound bags and cut your costs. Build a co-op of people that will buy with you. Have a food storage party (Yes! I did really say that!)
The must do of long term food storage: Keep it airtight Keep it cool Keep it dark Keep it dry Keep it protected
Food Grade Plastic Buckets An inexpensive way to purchase used buckets is from restaurants or bakeries. The Tillamook Creamery sells 3 gallon ice cream buckets and lids. Be sure to sanitize the bucket and completely dry it before placing your product.
Desiccants & Oxygen Absorbers Desiccants remove the moisture. Oxygen Absorbers.well absorb oxygen. Mylar Food Grade Bags keep your food dark, dry and protected. They are usually sold in bulk so find a friend or two to split the order. These items are a must have for long term storage. There are many online instructions on how to use these products. Sealing the Mylar bags can be done with an iron (but not the good iron).
Whether a global disaster strikes or one becomes unemployed, food storage is the best insurance one can have in uncertain times. You will garner a better dividend on your food storage than any other investment. There s more to improve upon than mentioned here, such as progressing to the next level from food storage to food production. But you have enough info to get started. So no more excuses. Get working on your food storage today. And don t forget the can opener.
This is not a comprehensive list of to do s. It will get you started. Do your research online. You will be amazed just how much information is out there. Don t wait until it s too late.
