3 Welcome to Spring... that keep this magazine dropping through your letter box once every couple of months. Give Steve a call (Telephone ) and he can tell you more.... and this edition. We hope that you have had a good winter and that the unseasonably early flowering of a wide range of plants has not been too confusing. Wendy mentions seeing aconites in her article but, is it just us being unobservant, or have there been less aconites (if any) this year? Thank you for anything that you might be able to help us with. This is your magazine - we look forward to hearing from you. Thanks Village Hall Jan McGeachie, and her husband Gordon, offered to share the editorial work and had started work on this edition. A change of circumstances has meant that they will not now have the time to devote to this role. We are sorry to loose their help before they had really had a chance to properly get started. We know that Jan had enjoyed the challenge and we would like to say a big thank you for the work that she had managed to put in to getting this edition started. We are sure that you will enjoy Jan s photograph on the front cover and hope that she will be able to find time to let us have more photographs in the future. Maggie, on behalf of the Village Hall Committee, has submitted an interesting proposal that has been discussed by the Trustees of the Village Hall and the Playing Fields Association (see Page 6). As you are probably aware, both these facilities were given by the Carver family to be held in Trust for the whole of the community of North Cave. You may remember the anniversary of the Village Hall s transfer was celebrated in the June-July edition of Village Link last year. A proposal has been put forward that the facilities provided by the Village Hall and Playing Fields should be combined to form one single central hub for village events, based at the Playing Fields. This raises more questions than it answers and perhaps would be better addressed by a public meeting to discuss the issues. Photographs Whilst on the subject of photographs, we know that there are lots of you out there with cameras taking photographs of all sorts of interesting things around our area. Jan s photograph shows that it is a matter of being in the right place at the right time. We would love to be able to share other people s work as well as ours. So, if you have a photo that you think might be suitable, please let us have a copy digital is best but we can scan a print, if necessary. Don t be shy. Whatever you think, you must not feel that your view does not count. It does! Decisions made now will have long-lasting effects. We can be grateful for decisions and gifts made in the past but maybe it is time to rethink what we, as a community, want to leave for future generations. Let Maggie (as Secretary of the Trustees of the Village Hall) or John Brattan (Chair of the Sports and Social Club) know what you think. Help Also, while we are asking, we are always looking for people who can spare a small amount of time once every couple of months to deliver the Village Link. We have a loyal band of deliverers but even they need to have the odd holiday or attend to family commitments. We need people who could step in to help when necessary - could that be you? We aren t asking for a lot - just an hour or so occasionally - but we all will be very grateful and you will be able to feel proud that you are part of the hard working little team We hope you will enjoy reading this very full (extra 4 pages!) edition of the Village Link. Thank you to all our contributors for making this a very varied and thought-provoking read. Best wishes from the whole Village Link Team Elizabeth News: Asda puts UK's first supermarket wonky veg box on sale. Box of imperfect in-season vegetables will feed a family of four for a week and costs % less than standard lines. So providing you don't mind ea ng a bent courge e, a two legged parsnip or a rude carrot it represents good value. The nearest Asda is in Market Weighton Tel: they will deliver. (Editor s Comment: Though - don't forget our local great-value green grocers like Walkers, near the M62 junc on, or Marjoram Nurseries, junc on of Low Road and Sands Lane, who provide locally grown fresh, in-season vegetables.) 3

4 North Cave Parish Council News The Parish Council Meet on the third Wednesday of every month, in the Village Hall, at 7.00pm. Parish Councillors: The list of our current Councillors is on our Notice Board, which is sited on the car park adjacent to the Chapel on Westgate. We still have two vacancies and anyone who is interested please contact the clerk. Parish Council Website: The council is going to run a website. We will be able to update residents very quickly about the local issues that may affect then. Cllr Searle and Cllr Moore have set up the site that the East Riding council provides for parish councils. We are deciding now what issues need to be put on the site when it is fully operational. Our thanks go to Roger and Maurice for the work they have done so far. North Cave - Neighbourhood Plan: Cllr Maggie Whitlock and Cllr Geoff Pile are going to consider the next steps for the plan, including looking at the design statement which has already been finished. Traffic Issues - You may have noticed the new signs on the road out of the village towards Beverley. Please be careful when travelling out of the village because there have been at least 28 accidents on the stretch of road round the sharp bends. Bad driving practices are the most common cause! The Clerk has informed ERYC of several areas of potholes in the village. If any villager notices any potholes, broken signs etc. please report them to the clerk. Dog Waste! Pick it up! All residents are reminded that they can still put dog waste in all bins, situated around the village. East Riding council will empty them so please use them. Trees surrounding the War Memorial (Conservation Area) - Tree Notification Application: The Clerk has submitted a planning application to ERYC which they have acknowledged. Some of the work has now been done. Two Cherry trees end of Blanshards Lane/Church Street: A job number has been issued by ERYC to cut back the trees, however the work has not yet been undertaken Allotments: The Clerk has filled the plots for the moment but if you think that you would like a plot, 4 in the future, please ring the clerk to be put on the waiting list. Community Emergency Planning: The emergency plan has now been up-dated. We are still looking for some Volunteers to help residents, who are not as mobile as themselves, if an emergency occurs in North Cave. Please ring the clerk if you are able to help. War Memorial - Grant Application: The Clerk updated the Council, informing them that the application has been gone through and the relevant paperwork has been sent to the designated contractor for signature. They have signed the Declaration, agreeing to the War Memorials Method Statement (annex 1 of the Grant Contract). We are sure that residents appreciate the wonderful effect of having the war memorial cleaned. It really looks splendid now and our thanks must go to Cllr Whitlock, Maggie, for all her hard work in obtaining a grant for the work to be completed. White Hart Public House - Nomination for Assets of Community Value: ERYC updated the Clerk to confirm that the White Hart Public House has been accepted as an Asset of Community Value. This means that the pub cannot be turned into housing for the next five years. The Parish Council hopes that the village will never be left without a pub. JZ Flowers. Cllr Linda Bayram, for the Parish Council, North Cave in Bloom and the Sports Club, together with representatives from Newport Parish Council had a meeting with JZ Flowers to discuss their plans for the future and how they can help the villages. They kindly offered to pay for plants and flowers and help organisations in the villages. Mires Beck Nursery has now had useful talks with the company and the school has been informed of their contact details. JZ is an international company with links to Africa and far bigger than we first imagined. Let's hope this is going to be the start of a beautiful partnership. 6 North Cave Playing Fields Association, The Social Club and the Village Hall It has been suggested for some time, and now proposed, that our village amenities, working in partnership, should work together to create a Village Centre under one roof. The Playing Fields, the Social Club and the Village Hall are run by committees of Trustees that undertake their work voluntarily on behalf of the Community. At a recent meeting of the Village Hall Committee and, after consultation with the Playing Field Association, it was suggested that the idea be formalised into a proposal for general consideration by our Community. This proposal consists of the following: The Village Hall is relocated to the Playing Fields to be part of a New Village Centre incorporating a Social Club, currently called the North Cave Sports and Social Club, and the Sports Facilities at the Playing Field. It is essential that you give your opinion for approval or disapproval of this proposal. This is a once in a generation opportunity, so try not to think of the ways these facilities currently exist. Think of the future needs of our Community. Please contact the following only if you disapprove of the proposal. No response will be taken as an approval. Maggie Whitlock, The Village Hall, Secretary Tel: or maggie@nlvq.com John Brattan, North Cave Sports and Social Club, Chair - Tel: , or jb.hemeldeme@gmail.com The results will be published in the Village Link magazine. 13 March 2016 Highways Hotham Parish Council News Repairs to Cliffe Road have now been carried out and a blocked drain on the 'S' bend on the road to north Newbald had been cleared. 7 SCHOOL LINK In this issue, we would like to tell you about our church links, our visits and visitors linked to this and also our school values. Please read on to see more about our school life. Our Jam (Jesus and Me) Club All of the children have been invited to join the Jam Club, which is run on a lunchtime by Miss Cawood and Mrs Dunham. In this club they have carried out the following activities: Made a card for the Archbishop of York, created a display for our church, made a value tree and a friendship tree for our hall and evaluated our collective worship in school. The work they do also supports our Christian community links. Visits to All Saints Church, North Cave We visit our local church regularly throughout the year. As well as holding Christmas, Easter, Harvest Festival and Year 6 Leavers' services at the church, Class One visit the church to hold 'mock weddings' and 'mock christenings'. In March the children from our EYFS visited the church to take part in a 'mock wedding'. See our photo below showing some of the 'wedding guests'. Visitors We have regular visitors to our school to lead our Collective Worship - Reverend Barry Worsdale, Mrs Glenys Sansom and Mark Tiddy (from the Hunsley Christian Youth Trust) are all welcomed in to our school. Earlier this month we had a visit from an Imam who spoke to the children about Islam. The Archbishop of York Youth Trust Young Leaders' Award Our Year 5 children take part in the above award which is a unique active citizenship programme that empowers young people to make a difference in their local community whilst growing in key leadership skills at the same time. Last year our 'ARCHIE' team helped North Cave Pre School with painting, planting and washing their outdoor equipment too. Our Collective Worship Councillors In our school council we have two children who have taken on the role of 'collective worship' councillors. Nathan, Holly, Willow and Tyler set up our hall for assembly, help in leading collective worship and evaluate our collective worship in school. They share bible quotes and quotes linked to our school values. Our School Values Our school values were chosen by the children, staff, parents and governors. They are DETERMINATION, TRUST, FRIENDSHIP AND RESPECT. The dedication to our values is demonstrated throughout our school and celebrated within our school ethos. 7

8 MIRES BECK: News and Gardening Advice.. Mires Beck Nursery is open seven days a week for plant sales until the end of September. Our staff and "trainees" have worked hard throughout the winter to bring you a superb selection of healthy perennials, herbs, shrubs and trees. We also grow a wide selection of native wildflowers, all of Yorkshire Provenance following the established codes of conduct by Flora Locale. As we're a registered charity that offers opportunities for people with disabilities and learning difficulties, we're always looking for volunteers to give a little time to help our qualified supervisors and support staff - even if it's just half a day a week. We also need weekend sales staff. Find out more about us and our range of plants at Meanwhile, here are a few jobs you can do in YOUR garden over the next couple of months. April Prune evergreen shrubs and hedges such as Photinia and Prunus. Prune Cotinus (smoke bush) to encourage larger leaves instead of flowers. Plant summer flowering bulbs such as Lillies and Nerines. Plant wildflower plug plants for a naturalistic effect. Cut back Perennials down to new shoots on last year's growth. May A good month for the 'Chelsea Chop'. A method of pruning many summer and autumn repeat flowering perennials. It can help to delay or extend the flowering period and produce more numerous flowering stems. Cut back stems of more vigorous perennials by half and the less vigorous by a third. The closer to flowering time the pruning is carried out the greater the delay in blooming. Not suitable for Paeonia, Lupin, Acanthus and Hemerocallis. Prune Camellias as they start putting on fresh growth. Prune spring flowering shrubs such as Forsythia and Philadelphus. Keep an eye out for red lily beetle adults and larvae on lilies and fritillaries and remove. 8

11 The Goole, Howdenshire and District Marie Curie Volunteer Fundraising Group have had another brilliant fundraising year th ending 30 Mar 2016, due to so much support from everyone we have raised over 30,000 (final total will be known a er this edi on has been published). Our Great Daffodil Appeal is coming to an end for this year; hopefully you have spo ed one of our boxes of daffodil pins in the local shops. We have been out and about collec ng in the supermarkets and street, you may have seen us in our bright yellow gear including large hats, which certainly make us stand out from the crowd as you will see in the pictures! As the weather warms up we look to summer days, enjoying tea and cakes whilst cha ng to friends. So why not hold a Blooming Great Tea Party - you can register on line to receive your fundraising pack burs ng with ps, recipes and everything you need to host a blooming perfect tea party, or get in touch and I will order for you. Your Blooming Great Tea Party can be anything you want it to be, host a tea-riffic garden party, a communi-tea shindig at the Village Hall or your very Marie Curie Fund Raising News own blooming great Bake Off. The money you raise will be crucial in helping us to care for more people living with a terminal illness. We are a small team covering a huge area but with such kind people holding events, giving generous dona ons, shops, pubs and garden centres suppor ng with our collec on ns and others saving their change for us, the money mounts up. All funds help to provide more local Marie Curie Nursing hours. The wonderful Marie Curie Nurses really do a marvellous job, they give pallia ve and end of life care and support to terminally ill pa ents 365 days a year. It costs 20 to fund one hour of nursing but the service is always FREE to the pa ent. The nurses care for pa ents in their own homes for a full shi, typically overnight, which allows the family to perhaps catch up on lost sleep or take a well-earned rest. Thank you very much for your con nued support. 13 With the unseasonably warm, wet, winter months followed by a cold snap, the early plants and daffodils around the village and your gardens did not know whether to bloom early or late. The pansy and primroses in the planters have not done so well, with it being so wet most of the time, but hopefully they will come to their best as it gets drier and warmer. Now that spring is upon us let us hope most of the daffodils around the village will have opened to reveal a sea of yellow. We have asked ERYC for more daffodil bulbs to plant in late Autumn, these will be used to fill in around the War Memorial and playing field. Once again we have decided to plant non- stop begonias and trailing begonias in the village entrance planters, village green tub and Village Hall baskets at the end of May or early June again this year. This will be the third year running with begonias in the planters because the plants did very well and looked lovely right through the summer. They do need plenty of care and attention and so Thank you to everyone who looks after all the planters. The JZ Flowers Company near the Triangle garage North Cave in Bloom has decided to help the local communities. Two of our members attended a meeting with JZ Flowers who have now agreed to supply North Cave in Bloom with plants in the future. Thank You. The 6 under road sign planters were cleared out late last year, so we will be tidying and planting Non- Stop Begonias again to brighten up the areas. We are still just a small NCIB committee but if you are interested in helping to keep North Cave Blooming lovely, even if you can only help with regular watering, please phone Steve Countryside Concerns Spring one day, Winter the next, daffodils out before snowdrops and hedges in leaf early February - our crazy climate just keeps springing surprises on us. At the time of writing, the farming year is still waiting to get under way. Gardens and fields are just too sodden to get on to and as soon as it dries up for a few days back comes the rain. How I long for the seasons of my childhood when winters were cold and snowy, spring was warm and windy, summers were hot and autumn was mild and mellow. Most of the country had some snow but, yet again, our corner missed out big tine. The sledge remained in the garage, yet again, and I fear my grandchildren will be teenagers before it sees the light of day. After being a regular visitor for the past four years, our faithful blackbird, Scruffy, hasn't been seen this year and we think he has gone to the big nest box in the sky, but his son and daughter are regulars and are as tame and cheeky as their father was. We have had a Robin that's been singing his heart out non-stop since before Christmas. At present he Have a lovely Spring and Summer NCIB is busy courting his lady friend and hasn't much time to give us a tune. I think I've seen more snowdrops this year than ever before. I didn't have to go to Burton Agnes to see them this year as the countryside round about has masses of them, and they seem to be extra tall this year too. Lots of our wild flowers seem to have been thrown out of kilter. I've seen Celandines blooming among Aconites and I was surprised to find Ox Eye daisies in flower on Christmas Day and I could have easily picked enough to fill a small vase - very strange! When the land eventually dries out enough to plough, the land will again be white over - not with snow but with seagulls. One local farmer really hates them with a passion and was heard to say - "I 'ate them there bods, they eyat all the worrums and they're MY worrums!" Cheerio. Wendy 13

14 North Cave WI News It is with great sadness that the North Cave WI has to announce the death of one of their longest a ending members, Mary Roberts. Mary was always an enthusias c, helpful, kind and hard working WI lady. She will be missed R.I.P. The last 2 months have been extremely busy. We started with a wonderful, informa ve talk by Val Wise on the works of Fred Elwell, this was very inspira onal and as a result Val has promised to take us on a conducted tour of Beverley in the summer. A huge amount of work went into suppor ng The Climate Change 'Show The Love' campaign. We th had a very successful workshop on 4 February, illustrated by the photos. Following this event our efforts went into 'The Clean for the Queen' village, past the car boot area and the layby off Newport Road where the quarrying took place. This area is appalling, such a shame as it is the entrance to a walk leading to the fishing and canoeing lakes. We believe a li er bin is needed there as we have been informed that people park there, in their vehicles to have a snack, mind we don't know who le their huge TV behind before project run by Keep Britain Tidy. We were a bit disappointed with the turn out of the residents of the village, only two non-wi members came to help, big thanks go to them. We filled 20 bags with rubbish collected from areas including the stretch from the play area car park, Church Street, right round the bends on the road leaving the village, Newport Road on the exit of the they moved off! EYRC have been informed of this fly pping. rd On 3 March we had an interes ng, tasty and entertaining evening with Vilma, who explained how her pa sserie at Everthorpe evolved, accompanied by some scrump ous 14

Our next monthly mee ng th is in the Village Hall at 7.30pm on 7 April featuring a talk and pictures on 'London and the City'. We hope some of you will join us for the Humber th Bridge Walk on 29 April at 10am which is part of the 'Women Walk the World' experience. This starts at the Interna onal Date line in the Pacific at 10am, their me, and as 10am comes to your country you take a walk and raise funds at the same me for those less fortunate than ourselves, who probably never have the luxury of walking for pleasure themselves; so we unite as one around the world. th On 5 May we have an a ernoon visit to the Buddhist Centre at Kilnwick Perry Hall followed by our evening mee ng including a cra demonstra on and workshop by Handsewn 4U. There is a Silver Band Concert at Driffield on another 25 ready to send to other sufferers of demen a. Our Kit & Na er group meet every Monday evening at 7pm, great fun! 16 Dear Villagers, This year is an exciting time for North Cave CC as we begin our first season in the Hunters York & District Senior Cricket League Division 2 Holderness. 17 ... another 'BLAST THE PAST The sight of the most iconic steam train in the world 'Flying Scotsman' taking to the tracks again, after her 10 year restoration, brought back fond memories of when I used to stand in the front window of my aunt's bungalow down Newport Road and watch the steam trains rolling by, on their way to North Cave station and beyond. I was fascinated by the different types of wagons they pulled - flat ones with sheets of iron and steel on, coal trucks, cattle wagons, long ones sheeted down with tarpaulin and always on the end came the little guard's van. But that was in 1947 long before the Beeching axe fell. Newport Road had the type of community where everybody knew everyone else. Across the road was Albert Woodall and his small dairy farm. He delivered his milk all around Cave with his horse and milk float, my cousin Keith used to help him deliver on a week-end and after school. His neighbour on one side was Nurse Cracknell and on the other side was Titch Calvert's dad's farm. There were no bungalows on that side then, just a shallow gravel pit where we used to catch newts with a jam jar - black ones with a red belly - we used to call them 'fire bellies'. Jean Weatherill's parents lived in the big white house - they moved there from a bungalow on the other side of the road and I can remember the house catching fire and the excitement it caused us kids when the fire engine cane roaring down the road with its bell clanging to put it out. It took most of the day to put it out but, thankfully, no lives were lost. John Poster's agricultural engineering firm was the last place on that side of the road. In its day, I suppose, it was North Cave's equivalent to Blackburn's at Brough and apprenticed many local men who learnt a trade there - my cousin being one of them. The bungalows were home to many of the kids we played with - Charlie and Janet Bayram, Kenneth (Tommy) Underwood and sister Christine, their dad (Taffy) drove for EYMS. Rosie Hanson lived in the houses near Townend bridge. As you went up Westgate, Greta Gledhill had a small grocery shop with a small tea shop at the back, further up was Freda Chamber's sweet shop, always a favourite place to call at. Waudby's Haulage were always busy with their fleet of lorries and Victor Pearson, the Joiner, was always in demand. Malcolm Mews had the electrical shop, as they do to this day, and Mrs Mews used to sell wool etc. in half the shop. David Hart had a shoe shop on the corner of Finkle Street and just past the chapel was Roy Wright's greengrocers. The two Scott brothers had a small bakery and made fresh bread every day and delivered it around the village on a big butchers bike with a huge wicker basket in front piled up with bread loaves. On the opposite side of the road to the chapel was Lilley's butchers shop. The White Hart and the Albion pub stood side by side and were well attended. Dr. Whiting lived close to the Albion pub and in those days you went to the surgery and waited your turn - no faffing about with appointments in those days - you were seen, diagnosed and given medication made up by himself, all in the space of less than an hour. He did everything - from delivering your child to stitching you up - a far cry from the NHS today! Barlows electric shop was the place you went to get your batteries from your wireless charged up. He also sold the first television sets. My aunt had one - it was small and brown with a 12" screen. We all gathered round it to watch the test picture before the evening programmes began, I saw my first Dr Who episode on it. Raymond Botham's grocery store was the last shop on that side. You bought your bacon, cut on the slicing machine, and your sugar, weighed out into stiff blue bags; expertly folded so the sugar never leaked out. Church Street had the same newsagents it has today and also had a foundry that cast all types of ironwork. But the most famous place in the street was Stoney's fish shop! Always busy and always open when the pubs shut. Stan's sweat would drip off his nose as he fried fish, Elsie served on and Malc chipped tatties that fast we all marvelled that he never got his fingers trapped. The Black Swan regulars always got their fish and chip suppers at chucking-out time. Happy Days. Wendy 17

18 The Wolds And Riverbank Countryside Society The Wolds and Riverbank Countryside Society is dedicated to the natural and local history of the area referred to in its name. Our mee ngs and ac vi es are designed to interest and inform, and to preserve, protect and improve local habitats. All talks are held at the Welton Memorial Hall star ng at 7.30pm. Please note that talks take place on Wednesday evenings and not Friday evenings as in the past, and also that the talk in January is on a Tuesday not a Wednesday. During the interval of each talk, drinks and biscuits are served for whatever you want to pay, and to raise society funds a raffle is held for which prizes are always appreciated. Wednesday evening talks are open to non-members: entry 2, children free. For further informa on contact: Keith Smith on Sunday, 10th April, 2016 BIRDING AT NORTH CAVE WETLANDS Gary Morrell, a long- me bird enthusiast, will lead a bird walk at North Cave Wetlands. The Wetlands, although the site of a former sand and gravel quarry, is now an oasis of thriving wildlife. It is a Yorkshire Wildlife Trust Reserve of regional importance for birds, run on behalf of the Trust by a team of local volunteers. The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust website describes the wetlands: "A mixture of shallow and deep water lakes and reedbeds provides outstanding habitat for passage, breeding and wintering wildfowl, waders, terns and gulls. Shallow gravel islands have been created in three lakes to provide breeding grounds for li le ringed and ringed plovers, avocet, oystercatcher, lapwing and common tern. There is a resident popula on of tu ed duck, gadwall, great crested grebe and some mes shoveler. In spring and summer small numbers of migrant wading birds pass through. Reed and sedge warblers and reed bun ngs are common in and around the reedbed and the north side of the reserve." Four hides and a perimeter path around the original site give outstanding views for novice naturalist or expert birder alike. They are popular with photographers too, and those just enjoying a beau ful walk in the countryside. Daily records are kept in the hides, and Angela Brown at the Wild Bird Cafe in the entrance car park can give further informa on and site maps. We will meet at 10am at the entrance to the Wetlands where there is good car parking space. The walk will finish about mid-day at the car park where food and drink is available from The Wild Bird Café which is open un l 3pm. Close to Angela's café there is now a covered picnic area overlooking one of the lakes. Sunday, 24th April, 2016 TIDY UP AT ELLOUGHTON Our society cares ac vely for the local environment, and our annual clean-up of our local rights of way will take place this year at Elloughton from 10.00am to 12.00pm. We will meet at the south end of Elloughton Dale, outside the gate to Peggy Farrow's Wood. Gloves, picking-up s cks and plas c bags will be provided at the mee ng place. Each pair of "cleaners" is given a sec on to work on so you will be able to see the difference you have made. Collected rubbish is to be le at an agreed place for collec on by the East Riding Council. For more informa on telephone Tony on Sunday, 8th May, 2016 RESERVE WORKING PARTY If you visit the society's nature reserve in February and March, you will enjoy the bright carpets of snowdrops, and then the spreading patches of aconites, all the result of past plan ng by members. On this day in early May come and be part of the spring Reserve working party. Our nature reserve, now a wood and a meadow, belongs to members, and needs care and development. Members will be working in the reserve on Bran ngham Road, Elloughton next to the Ionians' Rugby Club from 10am to 12pm. There's always a lot to do in the wood-- hedge pruning, thinning of saplings, removal of ivy, and plan ng - and this year, to encourage spread, we need to separate some of the snowdrop bulbs which have finished flowering for the year. Now, in addi on, we have the meadow to care for in its first full season. Before this working party day, the meadow will have been mown, so there will be raking and disposal of dead material to carry out. Then we will be plan ng 18

19 plug plants to encourage species diversity, but please remember if you have any seeds or plants to contribute they must be of na ve species. At half me we have a convivial break in the wood for hot drinks and biscuits provided free by the society. For more informa on, telephone Tony on Wednesday, 18th May, 2016 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING and SMUGGLING IN THE EAST RIDING This evening will begin with the Annual General Mee ng of the society. The agenda will include short reports from the Secretary, the Treasurer, and the Chair, and the elec on of officers and commi ee members. A erwards, John Goodman, Vice Chair of the society, will give an illustrated talk on smuggling in the East Riding of Yorkshire. We have all heard of smuggling in Cornwall: ships lured onto rocks and wrecked for their goods; contraband hidden in caves, fishing boats and even pig s es; and smugglers like Black Joan of Looe and James 'Old Worm' Williams of St Ives. Cornwall is so famous for smuggling that many people today believe this to be the only area of Britain where the ac vity took place. But this idea is wrong. Make sure you don't miss this mee ng to find out about smuggling in your own county. We would like to introduce The Yorkshire Meat and Game Larder, which can be found at 23 Church Street, South Cave. We wanted to take butchering back to the traditional values of locally produced meat, from local farmers and small holders. We, therefore, strive to provide locally produced meats and produce from the surrounding area, promoting Yorkshire. The suppliers of our meats are: beef from Mick Richards at North Newbald, lamb from Andrew Woodall at Riplingham, and rare breed lamb from Darren Whitaker in South Cave. We also have locally stalked venison and all types of game birds and rabbits, etc. Please pop into the shop and see our friendly staff, who will supply your needs. Also, remember...if you can't see anything you like...just ask. Hope to see you soon. Telephone: paddy@theyorkshiregamelarder.co.uk RENAISSANCE for NORTH CAVE and its ENVIRONS The government, along with its partners Rail Track and representatives of the new Northern Powerhouse, announced recently that, because of the poor transport links between Kingston upon Hull and other large conurbations such as Leeds, Sheffield and Manchester, they are now in favour of reopening part of the old Hull to Barnsley railway line with high speed connections to York and Doncaster, which will eventually join up with cities as far away as Liverpool. The new re-opened line will be known as HS4. This should bring great benefits to the area, especially to North Cave where a new station will be built. At approximately 230 miles per hour, it will carry passengers to Hull in less than 4 minutes. Journeys to Doncaster and York will be similar. Of course, in this area major improvements to the infrastructure will be required. The tunnel at Weedley will need to be updated and new bridges built on Station and Newport Roads. Once finance is agreed construction will begin, with a completion and re-opening date set for very early in April

26 If you love birds of prey then why not visit South Cave Falconry, home to The Wolds Way Owl Trust? Situated behind the Rudstone Walk Hotel on the road into Walkington, it has wonderful views over the surrounding Yorkshire Wolds. We always find it such a friendly place, being shown around and introduced to the owls now based at the Centre - Sandy the Barn Owl is such a character or meet Douglas and Diggory - Burrowing Owls, Cloud and Sky - Snowy Owls, Dusty the Great Grey Owl, Luther and Alice British Long Eared Owls, Edward, European Eagle Owl, Marmalade Tawny Owl, Niles and Daphne American Great Horned Owls, Shaggy, Scooby and Twiggy Bengal Eagle Owls, Zoobin African Spotted Eagle Owl. The Wolds Way Owl Trust rescues and cares for Owls, some of whom stay permanently. One tip, adopting an owl gives you a year's free admission as well as helping to pay for the Owl's veterinary and food bills - something you may well consider? A must for any visit is to watch one of their lunchtime flying displays, perhaps after you have sampled the delights of their small but cosy Café. Younger family members are encouraged to get hands on with their cute alpacas, pygmy goats and other furry animals (though we stayed clear of the pygmy ferrets!). Others may be tempted to return as Junior Zoo Keepers during their holiday to learn what really goes on caring for these magnificent birds and the array of animals there. Should you wish to experience true Falconry, then first spend a day being taught how to handle and fly a Harris Hawk in the nearby woods as well as feed it on your fist. Next step is taking part in the Lantra Falconry Award programme, under the guidance of their approved Lantra trainer, who not only teaches the basics but includes research, course work as well as the more practical aspects. So when you are next stuck for somewhere to go then remember South Cave Falconry - just remember to check opening times first on their website: Yours truly, Jan and Gordon McGeachie Answers to the Local Quiz (Page 9) 1.
