Zach & Angie Bon Chapter Directors Zach cell (757) Angie cell (757) Chapter Directors Summer is coming to a close, but we have many opportunities for rides and fun still on the calendar. Mother Nature has been very uncooperative by sending plenty of rain and unbearable humidity our way. Chapter- L has taken it all in stride and pushed through by making some of our rides happen even on 4 wheels. There was a group who went to Williamsburg for lunch. We have heard good reviews about the restaurant from those who attended. We were sorry to miss that one, but we had a Birthday Party to attend for our grandson that day. August s Sonic Night was well attended even though the forecast wasn t very promising. Most of us came on out on four wheels and enjoyed the company of our Chapter. There were lots of laughs and great conversation. Sonic Night is always a good time. If you haven t been to one, please come out on the 1st Friday of the month and join us. The next Sonic Night will be held on September 7th. Check the calendar for the details. The weekend of August 10th had a lot going on. It was the weekend of Chapter-L s annual camping trip to the Lynchburg KOA. Several members were unable to make it this year and they were missed. Those who were able to be there had a lot of fun and great riding. One route we rode had us riding through the George Washington National Forrest we enjoyed a beautiful tree canopy and fantastic views of farm lands. The weather cooperated and allowed us to ride both Friday evening and Saturday. As usual, we had a huge meal on Saturday night followed by a campfire and of course Apple Pie. Keep an eye on the calendar for next year when it comes out for the date for next year s trip. Hope to see you there. Breakfast was fun Enjoying some Apple Pie Continued next page... 3

For those unable to go camping, there was a ride planned to Captain Chuckamuck s followed by ice cream in Smithfield. We saw pictures of the ride there. It looked like boats would have been an alternative form of transportation. A great time was had by all even with the weather. It s great to see Chapter-L members getting out and enjoying themselves. We are looking forward to Wing Ding, which will be here soon. Chapter-L will be there in full force. We will have Chapter Members providing training in the classroom as well as on the range. We will be helping with security and greeting as part the duties assigned to the Virginia District. There are also plans to participate in the costume contest. That will be a great time. Chapter-L will be seen. Please let us know when you will be heading out and where you will be staying for Wing Ding. We have members leaving at different times. Some are staying in hotels near the venue while others are camping a little further away. We will try to get everyone together at least once for dinner as a Chapter and maybe a ride or two. There are many beautiful rides in that area. We want to know you arrived safely. Capt Chuckamuck s visibility Don t forget the August Gathering has been moved up to the 3rd Tuesday, August 21st as many of us will be on the road to Wing Ding the following week. We look forward to seeing you all at the Gathering and hope to see many of you at Wing Ding. See you on our next ride. Zach & Angie 4

Dan Clark & Lorrie Thomas Chapter COY Excuse me has anyone seen July? I seemed to have misplaced it. What is it they say, for the young it seems like it takes forever for time to go by? Remember counting the days until Christmas or the end of the school year? Is it my imagination or does it feel like time flies now? July was gone before we knew it. Dan worked 12-hour days and some 6 or 7-day weeks. Between his work schedule and the duck favored weather, we didn t seem to get out much. As a Chapter Couple, we managed to visit NC E-2, North Carolina s Elizabeth City Chapter. There were visitors from several North Carolina Chapters, some as far away as 4 hours. That District has three Chapter Couple traveling plaques, assigned to different areas of the State. The Members and Teams travel to visit the Chapters and capture the plaque. I hear tell that they would visit as many as three Chapters on a weekend. They combine a ride with the visit, enjoying the social part of GWRRA. One of the cool things about visiting other Chapters, besides the folks you get to hug, is an opportunity to experience other Chapters Gatherings. We have heard some really good stories, played awesome games and taken 50/50 money and door prizes home. Dan and I will do all we can this next month to visit as many Chapters as we can, even with Wing Ding taking a chunk out of August. Look for our s and come join us. 7 Steven Morgan Educator/Motorist Awareness Motorist Awareness Well everyone, here we are on the downside of the year. Almost two thirds over and it seems like it is just beginning. Everyone tries to get in as much riding as they can but the weather around here this year has been all over the place between the heat and the rain it makes it a crapshoot every time you get on board for a ride. This month I want to talk about something everyone should be thinking about from time to time. Rider Education On Bike courses. We all ride as much as we can, going from point A to point B, mostly on back roads but also some highway riding. But when we ride we don t take the time to practice the basics or the essential emergency maneuvers that can be the difference between being upset at another driver for cutting us off or being on the side of the road picking up the bike or something much worse. That is one of the reasons that to be a part of the levels program you are required to take part in rider courses so you can practice the emergency moves and basics to keep you sharp and able to react to any and all situations. Nothing can prepare you for every situation because you will never know what you will do until it happens but you deserve to have every opportunity to stay safe for you and your passengers. Wing Ding is quickly approaching and there are a variety of On Bike courses that are being offered for any and all attendees. You can take the ARC (Advanced Rider Course) that I will be teaching on Thursday and Friday, the TRC (Trike Riding Course) that Sherry will be teaching also on Thursday and Friday, as well as courses for all skill levels. Some of the courses can even be taken two-up (with passenger). Take a look at the Wing Ding schedule and see what all you might be interested in. Most involve some classroom and range time as well. Sherry and I look forward to seeing you at Wing Ding in the classroom/range or in the vendor area or many other activities that are being offered for your enjoyment. Until then, ride safe and keep the rubber side down. Steven 8

Dan Clark Ride Coordinator Ride Coordinator Greetings Chapter, It certainly seems like the month has flown by as I write this, it was just the other day when I wrote the last article. I wonder how it will feel when it comes time to write next month's article with 5 weeks in between. I recently read an article from a member in Florida that wrote, why is it our rides have such a small amount of people attending and the gatherings are also dwindling? Over the past few month's I have noticed this same thing not just within our Chapter but in all the Chapters around our area. One of the things that was mentioned was the fact that when a ride was scheduled and if it were canceled due to inclement weather, members would figure out other things to fill their time. This would take away from them visiting with their extended family and friends and it would become a habit, thus planning other activities other than Gwrra. As I mentioned above, we all are family and friends and we enjoy ourselves within the organization. So what can we do to eliminate this downward spiral of attendance and participation? If anyone has noticed, the past couple rides I have mentioned were a rain or shine event. This past Saturday was a perfect example. It rained over two inches of rain within an hour and we still rode, four wheels mind you but we went together and the skies cleared for a lovely evening. We enjoyed each others company and had a wonderful dinner which was topped off with an short ride to where else but an Ice Cream Parlor. We had 16 people attend and it was great seeing and chatting with everyone. So in the future I will make every effort to keep the ride scheduled as planned. We don't have to be on our bikes, we can enjoy an evening or a day time ride in our vehicles. It doesn't matter what mode of transportation we take, what matters is the camaraderie. I hope to see more of you on the rides and look forward to seeing everyone. Till we meet again, be safe, ride safe and keep the shiny side up. Regards, Dan Clark Va-L Ride Coordinator 9

Our Mission Statement: RIDE & GROW Respect all motorcycle riders and motorists Inspire members to participate in the Levels Program. Dedicated towards providing a family atmosphere so everyone has fun. Educate our members about new innovations regarding riding, safety, and about GWRRA. & Give back to the community, resulting in a positive image of motorcyclists. Relax, and enjoy the ride! Offer assistance and encourage participation by all members. Work with members by assisting them in achieving their goals. So, what are we really saying We don t discriminate; all types of motorcycles are welcome. If your friends are looking for a group to ride with, that believes in and practices safety, we are that group. Respect drivers by being courteous with our lights and riding style. We want all our members to participate in the Rider Education (Levels) program. The Levels Program allows members to advance from Level 1 (Committed to Safety) to Level 4 (Safety By Enhanced Commitment and Preparedness), also known as Master Tour Rider. As our members gain experience and miles, we inspire them to advance to the next level. We are a family association; we are dedicated to providing a fun and friendly atmosphere to members and visitors of all ages. We strive to make every event fun. Chapter L is dedicated to educating our members and visitors about motorcycling. We do this by having training provided by certified trainers that have graduated from Gold Wing University. We educate members about riding alone, with a co-rider, and in a group. We educate on riding as a team, pulling trailers, crash scene response, leadership, fun events, advances in motorcycling, and much more. Our trainers are evaluated by senior trainers to ensure they remain up-to-date regarding motorcycling. Not all motorcyclists are the same; we strive to present a positive image to the public. We inform the public about what our association stands for; Friends, Fun, Safety, & Knowledge. We are a part of the community and want the community to be a part of us. Have fun and enjoy riding with Chapter L. We want all of our riders to relax and enjoy the ride while being among friends that share your passion riding. It takes everyone to make the Chapter successful. But what is the definition of successful? Successful means the Chapter is fun. Successful means the Chapter rides a multitude of routes with varying distances. Successful means people want the Chapter to thrive. Successful means people ask what can I do to help Successful means our membership thrives. In other words, we cannot be successful without you. Participation from all members results in the Chapter being successful. Have you achieved your goals you ve set? Regardless whether your goals involve motorcycling or are professional, chances are, there is someone in the Chapter that wants to assist you in achieving your goals. Our goal is to assist you in achieving your goal. Our Motto: RIDE and GROW with VA-L 10

A View from the Front Submitted by: Lorrie Thomas, VA-L Two years ago, this coming November, I learned a valuable lesson. This lesson resulted in a fractured right arm and a fracture of a finger on my left hand. Note: If you are going to fall with your bike, best do it when there are several GWRRA Members close by. They lifted the bike off me like it was a feather, made sure my wedding rings were removed and safely secured and stayed by us until the ambulance arrived and took me to the ER. After several surgeries and more physical therapy sessions than I can count, I was released from medical care a little creakier, but fine. Memories of that morning are still crystal clear in my mind. The one statement I made, while lying in the grass, that I made good on, was to buy a Gold Wing Trike. So, why am I sharing this old story? It was the preamble to my newest adventure. Several weeks ago, I took the S/TEP Sidecar Trike Education Program, offered by Evergreen Safety Council. I passed and am now a brand new, rookie Trike Rider, but I am getting ahead of the story! Friday night. Generally, the students admitted to being a bit apprehensive about taking the class, having not slept as well as they had hoped the night before. Me, included. The first class was held in a college classroom, perfect for a lecture and interactive learning. We relaxed a bit and shared our reasons for taking the class. A husband, wife and mother-in-law had just purchased a VW Chopper conversion. By the end of the weekend, the mother-inlaw wanted her own trike! There were four of us who had collected a bunch of miles as co-riders. One gentleman was about to retire and wanted to return to the 70 s when he proudly rode a Harley. This time he bought a Gold Wing Trike and began counting the days until he and his wife could ride the US of A. There was one more guy who was a serious car enthusiast and thought a bike should be added to his collection. With an understanding of the proper gear required for the next day, our Instructors, Sherry and Jackie sent us home to rest and study a little. Saturday brought beautiful weather. The pace of the class was just right. Exercises were explained in detail, demonstrated by an instructor, then each of us, one at a time, ventured onto the course. Although the serious atmosphere insuring our safety was evident, we all felt comfortable enough to cheer each other on. We were consistently praised and, at times, gently corrected by our Instructors. It was fun. There was some more classroom time and then a bunch of bone weary students headed home. Sunday started on the range. More exercises were demonstrated. We practiced the new skills. Then, the brave sidecar riders were shown how to fly their sidecars. Part of their training was to know how to control the bike should the sidecar come up off its wheels, hence, flying the car. Those two women were fearless. The technical part of the test was then given. I am certain a few prayers were offered up. BUT, we were more confident in our skills than we were yesterday. Again, we watched our team members go through the paces. High fives and atta-girls were offered. We parked the rigs and went to the classroom for the written exam. The material was covered well, and we reviewed as a group each day. Pencils in hand, we began. Continued next page... 19

All of us, 100% of us, passed both parts of the test, written and skills. This gave us an amazing sense of accomplishment. We proved us older dogs can learn new tricks. I m so proud of my GWRRA sisters. Never, ever underestimate what you are capable of, or letting fear of failure keep you from trying something new. I plan on riding solo very soon with pride, but even if I never do, the adventure was well worth it. Lorrie M. Thomas Owner/Operator of Snow White 20

Health and Riding Article retrieved from Admin/GoldwingDocs.com Aug 2016 Newsletter Riding a motorcycle is a physical activity. One can drive a car in a zombie-like state, but riding a motorcycle requires constant attention and physical exertion. On top of this, you are exposed to the elements, which saps energy from you. Just the mere fact that you are being buffeted by wind uses up energy. Just like flying an airplane, before I get on my bike, I give myself a pre-flight inspection. Am I overly tired? Am I fighting off a cold? Am I recovering from an injury of some sort? Anything that might prevent my full care and attention to riding my motorcycle will cause me to pick a different mode of transportation, just as it would when I am planning to fly a plane. I find that there are a few things that I can do that improve my chance of being in top riding condition. Unfortunately, they are the same things that our doctors usually harp at us about: eat well, avoid junk food, stay hydrated, get enough sleep, and exercise regularly. For me, the toughest of all of those is getting enough sleep and regular exercise. There are never enough hours in the day, and I tend to treat sleep and exercise as an afterthought. That said, I find my longer trips are far more satisfying and relaxing when I make a point of getting adequate rest beforehand, and drinking lots of water along the way. As we age, our bodies start to let us down, and these doctor-harping items become even more important. A few frustrating rounds playing Laser Tag with my 16-year-old son makes it readily apparent that my reaction times are nowhere near what they were a few years ago. Fifteen years ago, I drove 2,200 miles nonstop to Las Vegas by myself over the course of 36 hours with only a brief 4-hour rest stop in the middle after 22 hours of driving. That trip would be out of the question today. A couple of years ago, too much caulking of windows left me with painful tennis elbow in my right arm. Squeezing the front brake lever on my bike was painful, so I had to forego riding for a while. Living with limitations is a fact that comes along with aging, and as motorcycle riders, we have to balance the risk that comes with those limitations with the desire to ride. Bringing a 900 pound bike to a safe stop at a stoplight, and then holding it there takes some strength - and properly operating legs and hips. What about when your hips or knees aren't up to the job anymore? There are "aftermarket replacements" available, but does that mean the end of your riding? Or do you need to start thinking about a trike? What about knees? With a weak knee, holding up a heavy bike is all but impossible. Are people with bad knees relegated to trikes and sidecar rigs? Can you still ride after a knee replacement? But it's not just aging we have to deal with - sometimes it's injuries. Some injuries mean we just have to wait for healing to occur before we can ride again. Other injuries are of a more permanent nature, and we either have to adapt to them, or give up riding. 21
