Official Newsletter of River Bend Gun Club The Bullet-IN River Bend Gun Club is a club for members, founded in Issue No. 249 June ANNUAL MEETING AND FAMILY PICNIC Inside this issue Official Club Business... 4 Our History... 6 Precision Pistol (Bullseye).. 9 Rimfire Benchrest NRA Light Rifle Smallbore Rifle Prone June Calendar July Calendar Classified Ads Range Map On Sunday, May 20, approximately 330 RBGC members, their families and guests turned out for the 2018 RBGC annual business meeting, family picnic, and swap meet. A total of 132 members, including life, annual, non-resident and senior members, officially signed-in and cast ballots for the annual election of officers. In addition, 141 life and annual members registered proxies were submitted to the Club Secretary prior to the meeting. These proxies, from members unable to attend the meeting and vote, authorized others in attendance to vote on their behalf. The annual business meeting was called to order promptly at noon by President Steve Hardin who delivered the opening remarks. The opening remarks were followed by officer reports from the Club Treasurer, Club Secretary, Chief Range Officer and Club Manager. RBGC Club Manager, Bill Dittman, named annual member Bruce Perry as the 2018 RBGC Member of The Year. Immediately following Bill Dittman s presentation, Will Owensby, CRO took the stage and called Ken Smith, Past President, Bill Dittman, Club Manager; and Steve Hardin, Club President to the podium. As soon as all three were present, Will addressed the members, thanked all three Club Officers for their many years of service to the Club and awarded each of them a Colt 1911A1 pistol in a glass topped display box. These awards were made on behalf of the Club for their contributions and service. (Continued on page 2) 1

2018 ANNUAL MEETING AND FAMILY PICNIC (Continued from page 1) After the service awards were presented to Steve, Bill and Ken, Activities Committee Chairman, Ederlin Owensby, conducted a drawing for 20 door prizes for members who officially signed in for the meeting. This year s door prizes included two certificates redeemable for annual membership dues, several cases of.22, 9mm and 45acp ammunition, four boxes of primers and several $100 gift certificates from Cherokee Gun and Pawn in Canton, GA. Steve Hardin returned to the podium and announced the results of the elections and the officers elected. Club President Will Owensby (unopposed) was elected with 38 Life Member votes and proxies. Life Directors Kelly Duncan (unopposed) was elected with 35 Life Member votes and proxies. Larry Sollars (incumbent) was elected with 36 Life Member votes and proxies. Annual Director Art Thompson was elected with 121 Annual Member votes and proxies. Steve Hardin, now serving as Past President adjourned the meeting. Immediately following the business meeting, Big D s Barbecue served a classic southern barbecue lunch of chopped pork, chicken, baked beans, slaw, sweet tea, lemonade and banana pudding for dessert. In addition, a talented grill team including Larry Towner and Stacy Marino served up juicy half pound hamburgers and plump hot dogs for the members and their guests. This year picnic games included Laporte Archery a challenging archery game (Continued on page 3) 2

2018 ANNUAL MEETING AND FAMILY PICNIC (Continued from page 2) using flu flu arrows and a special trap machine to toss flying foam disks. The Wacky Obstacle Course was a big hit as well. The swap meet was held on the covered firing line of the Mark Skuttle Range (formerly MP2) and was well attended. Prospective buyers found a wide array of goods for sale including shotguns, hand guns, rifles, holsters, ammunition, reloading components and equipment, and arts and crafts. The annual meeting and picnic requires a lot of planning and preparation by members of the Activities Committee and the RBGC staff. In addition, setup on the day before and ensuring the success of plans made for the day of the event requires the help of many dedicated people. We offer special thanks to Bill Dittman, Ederlin Owensby, Erica D Amico, and the many volunteers who helped ensure that everything went smoothly. In addition to chairing the activities committee, Ederlin was responsible for selecting Big D s BBQ for catering the food, for arranging the big tent and selecting the door prizes. Many thanks also go to the following folks who helped plan and stage the annual meeting and picnic: Junior Bryant, Steve Hardin, Will Owensby, Jim Sleeman, Larry Caldwell, Bill Illg, Mary Nardone, Denise Thompson, Jaime and Mike Frost, Tyson, Gavin, and Landon Horn, Bobby Reiber, Jr., Al D Amico, and Daniel Edison. Please accept our sincere apologies if we omitted anyone who should be on this list. Next year s annual meeting and family picnic is scheduled for Sunday, May 19, Please mark your calendar now and plan to attend. Details for the 2019 picnic will begin to appear in the club s newsletter and on the website later this winter or early next spring. By Erica D Amico and Ederlin Owensby 3

Our History The early history of River Bend Gun Club dates back nearly 60 years to the Seven Hills Gun Club. The Seven Hills Gun Club was formed in the early 1950's and its range facilities were located just south of the intersection of Roswell Road and Interstate I-285. In those days, that area was open farmland and I-285 had not been built. The club ranges were built on 25 acres of that farmland. The club had about 50 members who built a 10-point 100-yard rifle facility, a 30-point pistol range with turning targets and 2 duplex shotgun fields. Seven Hills Gun Club members enjoyed these facilities for six or seven years. By 1957, Atlanta was growing so rapidly that urban sprawl encroached on this range site. A massive apartment complex and the proposed I- 285 expressway forced the Seven Hills Club to relocate in This was to be the birth of River Bend Gun Club. The Seven Hills Gun Club found a 45 acre tract just north of Norcross just off Medlock Bridge Road where it crosses the Chattahoochee River. This property, located at a bend in the river, was leased to the club by the Medlock family for about $1000 per year. This site was ideally suited for a gun club since it was located on bottom land and in a sparsely populated area. The River Bend Gun Club was officially born in 1958 at that site. This was to be its home for the next thirty years. River Bend Gun Club members pitched in and constructed an 80-point covered pistol line roughly 320-fect long as their first of many projects. The club erected a 33-foot by 95-foot club house just behind the pistol range on the bank of the Chattahoochee River. This served as a place to hold the annual membership meetings, various other club functions, and became the site for the indoor air gun range. During the early years, members also built a 20-posilion, 100-yard small-bore rifle range and a 12-point 200-yard high power range. By the late 1950's River Bend Gun Club had nearly 200 members. Competitive shooting activities required range improvements. Members again worked to lengthen the high power range to 300 yards and to expand the small-bore line to 40 and shortly thereafter to 60 positions. Members also expanded the shotgun facilities to 5 skeet and 9 trap fields, built a running target complex and an 8-point PPC range. During the late 1950's. River Bend Gun Club had indeed the finest club facilities in the Southeast. Its members labored long and hard to build it to this status. In the early 1960's, River Bend again began to experience the pressures of expanding urban development. Berkeley Lake subdivision, across the Chattahoochee, was growing by leaps and bounds. Some of the residents began complaining about the noise of shooting and fishermen floating the river complained about shot falling on them. To placate its subdivision neighbors the club agreed to withhold shooting until 9:00 am and to discontinue early evening shotgun activity. To solve the problem on the river, the skeet field closest to the river was retired. This was the beginning of a series of events which would eventually close this range site and force River Bend Gun Club to move. By 1967, the growth of Atlanta suburbs had reached out beyond Norcross. The Atlanta Athletic Club purchased several hundred acres to the northeast, bordering the River Bend property. The 300-yard high-power range and the adjacent 100-yard bench rest range faced the Athletic Club property. As a matter of fact, the direction of fire was straight down a proposed golf fairway. For safety, these ranges would have to be closed when the golf course was built. These ranges were closed in This forced the use of the 100-yard range for big bore as well as small-bore rifle. The beginning of the end for this site was now clearly in view. (Continued on page 7) 6

The River Bend Board of Directors had finally, and reluctantly, agreed that club tenure on the Norcross Our History location was precarious at best. Part of the problem the Board of Directors faced was the need to again motivate the membership to tear down and rebuild the facilities once a new site was found. It was always easier to get members to use the ranges than to get them to assist in building, maintaining, or rebuilding them. However, the possibility that developers or local residents might be able to pressure River Bend into closing the entire complex in the near future was very real. A site search for relocation was begun in A number of alternate sites were investigated. One looked promising. This site was located about 10-miles north of the Norcross facilities on the west side of the Chattahoochee River, not far from Suwanee. The topography would support an ample number of shotgun fields overlooking bottom land, a 600-yard high-power range, a pistol range, and a 100-yard small-bore rifle range. The asking price was $600 per acre. Prospects looked good for this site even with the uncertainty of obtaining the funds to purchase it. Then, it was learned that the Corps of Engineers were developing a proposal to build a dam somewhere in the area that could possibly flood the site. Hopes for the new site were dashed with this revelation and member morale hit an alltime low. Because there still wasn't sufficient direct local pressure to close the existing facilities, new site motivation dropped and the Board of Directors discontinued the search for a new site. The Norcross site was to remain active for another decade. Pressures mounted again on the Norcross facilities. A prominent subdivision of expensive homes was started on the west side of Medlock Road before it crossed the Chattahoochee. The Corps of Engineers began a survey along the banks of the Chattahoochee with the prospect of declaring a strip along the river a "natural area" as well. Couple this with the creation of a Federal Park across the river from the club and by the late 1970's and early 1980's it was clear to the River Bend members and the Board that time was running out. River Bend would soon have to move or terminate its existence. The external pressure finally became forceful enough to move River Bend's Board into again starting a new site search. A new subdivision was started 1000 feet in front of the trap fields which forced closure of 5 of the fields. The decision point to move or close entirely had now been reached. A site search committee was formed in The committee assembled a list of possible sites including an area adjacent to Road Atlanta Speedway, a site in Lumpkin County near Dahlonega, another in Gwinnett County near Lawrenceville, and an area in DeKalb County off Flat Shoals Road south of Decatur, to name a few. None of them met the Board's site selection criteria. Sites either cost too much, were too far away, had unsuitable topography, or were too small. The Board now saw the difficulty, the expense, and the time it was going to take to find a suitable site. The decision to table the site search in 1967 had made the effort of finding a site in 1983 several orders of magnitude more difficult. First, acreage had to be considered. The club needed at least 150 acres of acceptable topography to develop rifle, pistol, and shotgun ranges characteristic of a full facility club. Second, the cost had to be reasonable and the site had to be accessible. None of these sites were acceptable. Then, in early 1984 a 146 acre tract was located in Forsyth County, off highway 141 about 12 miles north of the Norcross facility. The cost was about $1200 per acre. The acreage and topography were marginal but would permit range development. Future expansion would be difficult. The Board decided to purchase this tract as the only real alternative to closing the Norcross facility. 7

To obtain the capital required for the purchase of the property, life memberships were offered to club members Our History at a cost of $3000 each. The lengthy process of purchase negotiation and zoning for a gun club was started. By late 1984 the site had been purchased and plans for earth moving and range construction were begun. A bid for $106,000 was accepted to do this site work. Nothing was ever started. A field trip for the club members was planned for February 1985 to show them the property and plans for range development in the spring. The field trip was abruptly ended just as the members arrived at the entrance to the site. The entrance was blocked by a group of local citizens who called themselves "The Concerned Citizens of Forsyth County." This group denied our members access to our property by chaining up the entrance road. Egress from the area later that day was blocked by about 75 people who blocked the road. After a visit from the sheriff, the road was cleared and our members departed. Shortly after this, the same group pressured the county commission to rezone the property with restrictions. The restrictions were so severe that it made the property unusable for a gun club. This forced River Bend to find another property. Morale declined to a new all-time low. The new site location committee developed several alternatives. A possible location was visited at Kelly Bridge and Cowart Road. The owner wanted too much for the property. An area near Dawson Forest, overlooking the Etowah River, would have been excellent for the shotgun fields but unacceptable for centerfire rifle ranges. A 145-acre site off highway 9, about 10 miles south of Dawsonville, had unacceptable topography. Finally, a 281 acre site off of Hubbardsville Road in Dawson County was found. The price was reasonable at $1675 per acre and the topography was great. Given that everything else worked out. River Bend Gun Club had found its new home. An adjacent property owner agreed to give River Bend a right of way off of Hubbardsville Road, the Dawson County Commission rezoned the property Recreational-Agricultural without problem and the limited opposition by local residents was overcome by discussion meetings with the club members. River Bend Gun Club members came through again. Now, River Bend faced moving the facilities, setting up the ranges, and redeveloping the club membership. The problem in 1986 and 1987 was member participation in working to redevelop the facilities. A small core of members pitched in and developed the covered pistol, action pistol, silhouette, multipurpose rifle, plinking, big bore and shotgun facilities. In 1989, their diligent efforts got the 600 yard high power range open. The future is bright for the 60 plus year old River Bend Gun Club as long as members are and will continue to contribute their time as well as their money to maintaining and improving club facilities. Members can never forget that River Bend is not just a place to go shoot. River Bend is a group of people dedicated to having, using, preserving, and improving their place to shoot. The future depends on dedication of River Bend members - the finest in the Southeast. 8

Precision Pistol (Bullseye) Sunday, May 6, Weather was perfect and some good scores were posted. Congratulations to Match Winner John Strakose who shot x. John should be expecting a Master class card in the mail from NRA soon. Congratulations also to High Master Jim Good at x, High Expert Ricky Parrott at x and High Marksman Neil Lewis at x. 10 Rimfire Benchrest The second River Bend Gun Club Rimfire Benchrest match of 2018 was held Sunday, April 29th. Ok well technically I guess it was the first match fired, as the March match was cancelled due to weather and very low turnout. This month made up for last, with a turnout of 14 shooters, great temperatures and blue skies. While match setup was done under light winds, the wind was kicking my mid-match with interesting results. With 14 shooters present two relays were used to divide the Unlimited rifles from the Sporter/Factory class that was evenly divided between the four competitors using rests and the four using bipods. This breakdown meant mixing semiauto, bolt action 22 and one 17 cal shooter, but everyone seemed to like the groupings and the match got underway. Due to winds expected by mid-morning the first stage was fired at 100 yards on the IBS-H/2 200 yard Hunter Rifle target which has a 1 10 ring and a 1/8 X aiming dot. With winds beginning to pick up, Grant Toman using his almost invincible 10X/Braughton combination firing Eley Match took the stage with a 249-3X. Match Director Simon Bailey with his Hall/ Shilen/Tenex combo was not far behind with a 247-1X. Newcomer, Bill parker and his Stiller 2500/Shilen/Tenex rig held 3rd another 2 points back with a 245-1X. First time shooter Rick Harris (Turbo/Benchmary/Eley), in only his second match ever, was shooting well, but saved a round, by miscounting the holes in the target (been there, done that). In the Sporter Rest class, Andy Greenspon using his Anschutz MPR held first with a 236-1X followed closly by a pair of first time attendees, Joe Ettershank at 232-2X (Anschutz 1727/RWS R50) and Nancy Gould (Valquartsen Summit/SK) at 231-2X. In Sporter Bipod long time competitor Wayne Hunt (Anschutz MPR/ RWS R-50) was ahead of Lewis Burger (Savage.17 HMR) by 2 X s with Wayne shooting 237-3X to Lewis 237-1X. Steve Gould (Nancy s Husband) using his tricked out CZ455 and SK, was one point back at 236-0X. The targets were pulled back to 50 yards, just in time for the winds to get a little more crazy. The first unlimited stage at 50 yards saw Toman group 3 points, to post X, but easily holding on to first place. Bailey held onto 2nd, posting a X and Parker advancing 1 point firing a 243-9X. To save setup time, the Unlimited s went ahead and fired their second relay at 50 and that s when the real fun started. 10 (Continued on page 11)

Rimfire Benchrest (Continued from page 10) With winds changing constantly, the spoils went to those who picked their shots most carefully! In bad winds, Toman fired a 250 clean posting an amazing X! Rick Harris, learning quickly, also posted a clean with a X a great accomplishment considering this was his first RBGC match. Bailey, struggling on the far right nearest the trees, fired a disappointing X. After the Unlimited class finished, Toman took the $20 match prize with a very respectable X and Bailey took First Unlimited with a X. Bill Parker held off the clean of Harris to finish in third at X. Next the Sporters took the line to shoot their two 50 yard stages. The wind didn t get any worse, but it sure didn t get any better either. Ettershank posted a 235-4X and a 217-5X to take the first-place money with a X in the Rest class and Hunt shot a 234-6X and 235-8X to take $20, for first in the Bipod class with a X. Everybody reported a great time and all had their own stories about the evil RBGC April winds. Please see the scores page of the website for complete match results. The next Rimfire Benchrest match will be Sunday May 27th. Competition is friendly and relaxed with lots of coaching and friendly sparing. You don t need a high dollar unlimited rifle to have fun, so if you have a good rifle and ammo, a front rest and bag or a bipod, I hope you ll consider coming out and joining us! 11

NRA Light Rifle Tournament 2 - May 6th Simon Bailey Finally! A nice spring day. Clear blue skies, bright sunshine and a very slight chill welcomed the May Light rifle competitors. A total of 13 shooters were present including the usual gang two competitors returning after a long sabbatical and the White family who made an entire class to themselves! After the usual briefings and sight-in period, the match got started with little wind and nice bright conditions. Simon Bailey was able to post a reasonable 91.0X to take the lead after the first stage, ahead of King Stacke with a 90.1X, Don Coleman with a 90.0X and Mark Dorlay with an unusually low first stage at 87.0X. First time shooter Sean White, in the Unclassified Master class also know as the White family class as it consisted only of family members started out very well firing an 82.1X. Angelise Sleeman, returning after a long hiatus, showed that she had not forgotten how to shoot, by posting an 83.0X. By the end of the second stage, Bailey and slipped to second by a center shot behind Stacke, with Dorlay scoring another 87.0 to hold third over Don Coleman by a single point (173.0X to 173.0X). As the third and fourth stages passed by, the wind began to make its presence felt with stronger steady winds, which were shootable, but some nasty gusts. Unsupported and offhand at 50 feet, it s not as important what the wind does to the bullet as what it does to the shooter, so patience became a virtue, as the wind pushed the sights from one side of the bull, and sometimes target, to the other. Stracke stayed very consistent shooting a 92.1X and a 90.0X to hold onto first and Dorlay got into the rhythm shooting a pair of 92 s with a center shot to move into second. Bailey bobbled just a bit, but posted bookend 88.0X s to fall to third place by 1 point. Coleman left an opening in the 4th by shooting an 82.0X to let Bob Morris, by virtue of a 90.0X and an 84.0X, tie the score and lag by only 1 center shot. Sharpshooter, Brad Reynolds, sans his better half Beth, was also in the hunt tied with Coleman at 342.1X. In the White family class, Lindsey came alive to show hubby Sean how it s done posting a 71.0X, while Sub- Junior son Connor struggled with the weight of the rifle, but seemed to be having a great time nevertheless. (Continued on page 13) 12

NRA Light Rifle (Continued from page 12) With the air temperatures rising to a very pleasant level, the villainous River Bend winds made themselves fully known. By the final two stages, winds were up to the double digits with gusts rising to 25 mph with fewer lulls. Stage 5 left Stracke with his only score in the 80 s by dropping to an 89.0X matched by Bailey. Dorlay, shooting very fast, had a bad stage posting an 84.1X but a very important 1X as it would turn out. Morris bested everyone by shooting a 90.0X, but most everyone else suffered from the wind. Mr. and Mrs. White continued to duel with Mr. scoring a single point higher than Mrs.! The final stage, number 6, was where the wind really decided to come out and play. Sometimes it was constant enough to lean into and be able to break a good shot, but mostly it just chopped around, changing directions and really messed with the shooters. Stracke complained a bit, but posted a 90.1X to secure first place with a 542.3X. Dorlay returned to better form, pacing himself to get a 90.0X. Bailey started well with the first shot scoring his only center shot of the match. Unfortunately, a pair of 8 s and an undiscovered scoring error (see footnote) left him with an 86.1X to finish in 3rd behind Dorlay by 1 Center shot 532.2X to 532.1X remember that X? Morris was also impacted by the wind shooting a final 77.0X to take 1st Marksman with a 509.0X over Coleman who finished as 2nd Marksman with a 507.1X. Brad Reynolds took 1st Sharpshooter as 512.1X and was also awarded recruiting honors for encouraging the White family to attend. And speaking of the White Family, in the White Family Class (Unclassified Master) Lindsey, took it to Sean in the final stage 75.0X to 68.0X. Unfortunately, it was not enough, and Sean took 1st Master honors. Connor seemed to be starting to get the hang of things and posted a much better effort than previous stages. He took home a High Junior award, and Angelise Sleeman took High Woman honors. Please see the scores page of the website for the full Match Bulletin. The next match will be on Saturday June 2nd, and will be two fired matches with any sights at 50 yards an even more challenging course of fire. Assembly starts about 8:30 AM on the River Ben Rimfire range, with first practice shots by 9:30. Footnote: While writing this article, the author looked at the fired targets for some details and discovered that Bailey s target has a scoring error. The final bull was marked -3 but the shots were an 8 and a 10, so should have been a marked -2. This extra point would have been good for second place! I relay this, not to whine as this was the authors target but to remind competitors that it is their responsibility to verify that the scoring, arithmetic and recorded score is correct. According to NRA rules, once the protest period is closed, the targets taken down and the match results announced, no corrections are allowed, so the posted results rightfully stand! 13

Smallbore Rifle Prone The April 28 smallbore prone match featured typical April conditions frequently-shifting wind that occasionally gusted and kept everyone on their toes. The results: Sling Class: F-Class: Steve Hardin X Dave Rabin X Matthew Whitley X Mike Upchurch X Doug McNash X Art Douville X Joe Ettershank X Many thanks to Tommy Steadman for calling the match, and to Jim Holliday for scoring and helping run the match. Our next match will be Saturday, June 23, 2018, with registration open at 8:00 a.m. and first shots at 9:00 a.m. The entry fee is a modest $10 for club members and $15 for non-members, and one may shoot with a sling, on a front rest, or on a bipod.
