Page 2 There was a very good turnout for our AGM, Sunday 29 September 2013 and it was great to see Alan Manning and Carl Busing coming up from Ngaruawahia and Huntly respectively. Those who got in early got the front row sofa seats, next row was the garden chairs and the final row was the window sill. Our President, Simon Sharp opened the proceeding in the usual way of reports etc. also thanking all those who helped with the convention. Elizabeth, our treasurer, did the finance report. The revised club rules were passed unanimously and we thanked Bruce Cropper for all the work he put into them. The election of officers was next with the return of most of the Auckland s AGM and Meeting Report Michael Hilliar, Auckland committee for another term: - President; Simon Sharp, Secretary; Michael Hilliar, Treasurer; Elizabeth Hilliar and committee members; Hugh Keal, Andrew Geard s and John Reinecke s Roundhouse kitset Fowlers showing individual styles Photo: Michael Hilliar Hugh Keal s Ruby powered train rounds Lemon Tree Curve Photo: Michael Hilliar Ray Williams, Derek Lane and John Reinecke. Robert Graham stood down and Murray Lee was elected in his place. We thank Robert for all this input into the group over the past years; especially the pivotal role he and his wife played in organizing our very successful Garden Railway Convention held earlier this year. Robert had the crucial experience; as he along with Henrik Dorbeck had organized the previous Auckland Garden Railway Convention. With all formalities completed it was out into the garden for what we are really here for; running trains. This time to get something different on our railway I invited the steam boys and girl and those

Page 3 Any way it didn t take long for the steam boys and girl to get up steam. John Reinecke handed over the controls of his Round house Natal Fowler to Bruce Cropper. Bruce is sitting on the fence in which way he wants to go with live steam so it will be only time before he has one too. Murray Lee s newly completed Sarah with first of 5 scratch built NZR L wagons.. Photo: Brian Millar with battery power. This saved me the track cleaning chore as the previous night I had to work. I thought it might also encourage me to get a move on and finish my steamer and to convert over to radio controlled battery some of my other DC locomotives as the railway is generally only being run for club meetings when I have to clean the track. The visitors would have noticed that the threatened cat house is still standing, but I am now really thinking it s got to go so I can complete that intended station section. There is always a picture taken of the trestle and this time, Alan Manning s battery powered Class 66 gets the honour. Photo: Michael Hilliar Andrew Geard has nearly finished his version of the Roundhouse Fowler so his and John s were put together so show off the two variations that have been made of the same kit. Andrew also brought along a Roundhouse Millie but the gas system failed to fire it up. It had a train of I.P.Engineering laser cut 4 wheelers which I disappointedly didn t get a picture of. Donna and Murray Lee both gave their recently built Accucraft Ruby and Roundhouse Billy kits their first club outings and both ran very well. Murray has also completed a rake of wooden La wagons for his to pull and I understand he has a couple of box cars under construction also. Hugh Keal brought along his Ruby for its first visit to my layout. Hugh built this from an early kitset many years ago and it was a bit of a disappointment, but with encouragement from the growing band of live steamers it s problems have been ironed out and every time it s running times are getting better and better. Alan Manning was the only one to promote the Radio Controlled

Page 4 battery powered with his class 66 and his wife s Bachmann tram. Alan Manning s wife s R/C battery powered Bachmann tram Photo: Michael Hilliar Stop press I have now started the demolition of the cathouse; just hope I keep going and complete the job. Hopefully I should get enough timber framing from it to build the new station. The wire netting will go to the building of a plaster version of the gorge like the one on the Durango and Silverton Railway. I am a man with dreams; just need the time. 5 Page 5 WGRG Hosted at the B and DR Railway Report & Photos: John Robinson, Tawa Sunday 13th October and the Wellington Garden Railway Group's monthly running afternoon was hosted by Brain and Diana Cashmore at their recently expanded railway Dave Allen s Loco hauling Gavin Sowry s Beer Train No, it s not a completely new railway, rather Brian and Diane Cashmore s railway, formerly know as the Lyndi Railway, which has morphed into a larger and reconfigured line. Brian has always been a most prolific scratch builder of buildings and other structures and the rate of production has continued to provide many new buildings to fill the expanded railway. October s running afternoon for the Wellington Garden Railway Group was the second visit in

Page 6 One of the many new buildings, all scratch built of course as we've come to expect from Brian John Robinson s Dubs A hauled train about to swing right into the area of the most recent expansion of the railway 2013 for many of us to Brian s railway, having shared his retirement come birthday bash there in April (as reported in the June Garden Whistle). There has been some minor refinement of the track configuration since then, mainline wise, off the main line a new permanent way depot has added. Around the track some new retaining walls, a rather nice planter along the back fence, and more new planting is growing the railway into its environment nicely. Almost centre stage is a new large engine shed capable of holding all the B&DR locomotive department s fleet, well current fleet. As with all Brian s buildings, he constructs from whatever materials are on hand that can be imagineered into the required components rather being a stringent follower of the current hobby shop fad (hmm - something I can be a bit guilty of). The roof of the engine shed is made from corrugated cardboard sold John Robinson s Dubs A hauled train passes above the busy freight yard

Page 7 cheaply in bulk for packing, there is just about enough in Brian s workshop to roof a full size engine shed! Having been given coats of sealer, paint and waterproofed the hope is it will allow the engine shed to be semipermanent outside perhaps retreating indoors in only the worst of the weather, and will allow shelter for locos during intermittent showers. A further new structure is a slate clad church, well almost a small cathedral. The slate was cut on a proper wet tile saw paying heed to the usual health and safety warning re cutting slate. The cut slate then assembled with waterproof tile adhesive. No problems with weather on this structure and it s that heavy not The new engine shed, and on the right, the freight shed even the best Wellington wind will blow it away! The churchyard fence has also been made from cut up slate tiles. Building these brings a new meaning to being out on the tiles I suppose. There is also a new warehouse, not quite low relief or quite full depth either, as a backdrop to the main yard. Must have been very tricky getting the saw back roof right in the triangular space it fills. With other smaller new structures and many resited buildings from the previous manifestation of the railway the B&DR almost feels, in places, like a whole new railway. Luckily the railway vineyard and winery still exist, so the first vintage can t be far away. As for the running day I ll let the photos speak for themselves, the usual platitudes of good company, great food, fine weather and lots of trains apply. Also, as usual, reading a report about a running day is no substitute for being there. There just is so much to be gained from attending a running days. One of the highlights from the afternoon for me was hauling the G Scale Central Round Robin Boxcar around the railway with my Dubs A. What is the Round Robin Boxcar you ask? An LGB Boxcar that is working it s way around the world running on GSC member railways, I ll be reporting more about the Boxcar separately.

Page 8 Wairarapa Groups visit to Jenny and Selwyn Taylor s Railway. Report and photos: Lloyd Dickens, Masterton Jenny and Selwyn Taylor inherited my brother Beauchamp s garden railway when they purchased the farm. They have spent a lot of effort recently to bring the railway up to tip top condition. The fact that very few problems where encountered after 18 months of no trains running on the railway says a lot of its how well it was built originally and how much effort Jenny and Selwyn have put into it. In fact they made the double line X switch work something that had not happened before. The layout is mostly European having a castle and typical English/French houses plus a canal. The track is part brass with a lot of steel strip on edge welded into place. All the points are hand built. If all the points had been in the correct place all would have run very smoothly indeed. I started by running my IOM Viking diesel but after only a short run it failed. So the rest of the track was tested by Lee Collett and Dean Ellicock. It would have been easier if their trains had been shorter but any way soon all was running well. Dean brought along his Pacific Class locomotive towing his 2 Bay Coal Hopper cars. The type, or "Pacific", as the class was known, was the predominant steam passenger locomotive during the first five decades of the 20th century. Lee Collett brought his German TEE Set which was in this case a Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) powered passenger train. Lee s Train looked impressive at high speed but mostly followed Dean around at a more leisurely pace. The Trans Europ Express was a business class train for high speed travel throughout Europe. Due to various voltages for electric trains in each country DMU s where common. The TEE Trains ended in Jenny provided a great afternoon tea plus cold drinks during the hot afternoon. 11 Page 11 National Garden Railway Convention 2014 Time: 15/16th February 2014 Garden Railways: We have 11 Garden Railways to visit many of which have been substantially up graded since the last Convention held in the Wairarapa. Included is the world famous Hydrangea Tram line of Christine and Lee Collett as appeared the Garden Railways magazine. Update: In the last year the Wairarapa has seen the building of two new railways and one in the process of being built plus the upgrade of four more. In October we visited the Taylor s railway and deemed it fit for the convention. The Taylor s have put a lot of effort in restoring Beauchamp Dickens s railway. My railway is still under reconstruction but will be ready by February as will (we all hope) Dan Hughes large new railway. He has a large portion running with the Northern loop to finish. All looks great for the layout tours. Morning and afternoon tea plus lunch and dinner are all organized. Seminars: All seminars are organized, details soon. Special visits: On Monday a conducted tour of Cross Creek and the incline will occur. Please mention you are interested when you register. Also for those traveling north Murray Bold in Ashhurst will have his railway open for visits. Interesting fact: From Carterton all the garden railways are less than 20 minutes apart. Register Interest: To get updates please contact Lloyd Dickens Contact: Lloyd Dickens Phone (06) lloyd.dickens@wise.net.nz Registration form at end of this magazine.

Page 12 RUNNING DAY AT MURRAY S PLACE: OR WHAT S IN A NAME Report & Photos: Warren Stringer, Carterton In September our running day was at Murray Clarke s place. We have been watching this layout evolve with some interest as it has had a major rebuild over the winter months. It has now grown an upper level loop raised up off the ground on timber bench work. Although we thought the new level had been completed it looks like the build work will continue, and the new loop is soon to double in size Lee has been busy making catenary for this raised track way, where Murray will run his new Piko DB crocodile and his other locos with pantographs. This layout has now gone through so many iterations, transformations and reconfigurations recently that it now seems that change is the norm. If I had to think of a name for it it would probably be The Transformer or Murray s Magnificent Morphing Masterpiece. Speaking of names - over the last few months I have been twisting peoples arms to think of names for their garden railway layouts. (And just to be fair I should come up with a name for my own railway as well I suppose).. Actually twisting arms is probably a bit strong its been more like the odd have you thought about, and the Lee Collett and Murray Clarke installing the catenary system on the new raised loop Jim McIntyre s loco goes AWOL on the new loop.. It must be here somewhere occasional maybe you could call it. Lee and Christine have Rosebrook and Dry River as names for their garden layouts. Ian and Ann had Culcreuch Fold when they were at Skeets Road. But apart from that it seems that most of our Wairarapa layouts are still un-christened. Charlie has been making some progress getting as far as sorting out a name and nameboards for his main station, but

Page 13 Murray Claeke s new Piko Crocodile in action The brains trust (Jim McIntyre, Lee Collett, Lloyd Dickens and Murray Clarke) plan the next stage of the build work Mixed goods special on veg-patch bend Another area designated for a rebuild? has not yet formally announced a railway name. I know he is working on it as a couple of options have been floating around over the last few weeks, and I am looking forward to a formal announcement sometime soon. My layout is starting to bed in now. The plants (including the weeds) are filling out and have a bit more maturity about them. The whole thing is taking shape and it is starting to come of age. It now feels right to have a name for it. For me this thinking up names lark is not as easy as it seems. I like the sound of The Far Tottering and Oyster Creek Railway, but as this name has already been used I will still have to keep working on it. Of course the name itself is only half of the attraction. I like the thought of having a formal naming ceremony, where the official nameplate is unveiled for the first time by a local celebrity (probably my wife in my case), and we all knock back a couple of cups of fizzy grape juice and eat sticky buns crank up the barbecue you know how it goes and then we all get to enjoy the rest of the day running trains And so in keeping with my habit these days, I asked Murray if the new layout was going to have a name. Why yes he said I have used so many rocks from the local river that I feel I have moved half the river to my place, so I should give it the same name as the river. I am now looking forward to Murray s official naming ceremony. Oh yes and we all enjoyed running trains on the new layout as well.

Page 14 More Turnouts, AFR Style!! Report & Photos: Kerry Paterson, Ashburton I have been hearing about other members making there own turnouts, but never thought that I would ever do my own. With the cost of commercial ones rising and the larger the radius, the bigger the price!! I took the bull by the horns and starting asking questions, reading books and web sites to find a simple version to build. The version I choose was featured in the 'Garden Railways" magazine spread over the issues, June and August If I can work these out any one can, I did not use a jig as I glued my sleepers (4mm X 10mm X 88mm pine) onto my MDF inside base board then spiked the rail when dried. I found it cheaper to import the proper 1/2 inch spikes from the States, not too sure how they would fair out side but my test piece will tell the tail. I won't go into the process of the build but I assure you that everyone who has made them were correct in telling me that they are not hard to build and now I can join that other section of the hobby of making home made turnouts and hand laid track.

Page 15 GSC Round Robin Boxcar Reaches NZ Report & Photos: John Robinson, Tawa Mid 2010 a plan was hatched on the G Scale Central forum for possibly a loco, or perhaps more practically a wagon to pass around members running on their railways linking virtual friends in a more tangible way. An LGB boxcar was kindly donated by Paul Edmunds starting its worldwide journey on his railway just north of San Francisco. The GSC Round Robin Boxcar on the B & DR When I received the Boxcar I had expected the fun of reading all the names but the quantities of mementos was a surprise and the obvious personal nature of some of them shows what a great bunch of folks there are in this fine hobby of garden railways. Of course with England being the family home country of GSC, for much of the ensuing years the Boxcar has travelled England attending garden railway shows as well as enjoying journeys on home railways, at running days and visiting preserved railways. For me as a regular on GSC and its forerunner G Scale Mad most of the names that now reside on the Boxcar are almost household names. I do hope in years to come to visit many of the railways that the Boxcar has travelled over, but for now having the Boxcar for a few Its journey thus progressed over a number of railways and railroads in the USA before traveling north through Canada and then eastward over the Atlantic to the UK. As it travels it collects not just signatures and railway names but a plethora of interesting mementos. In the ongoing topic on GSC that follows the Round Robin Boxcar s progress there are also pictures of the Boxcar traveling in or resting on full size locos, traveling on preserved railways. h t t p : / / The GSC Round Robin Boxcar on Wayne Haste s DR Railway

Page 16 weeks to travel around our railway (the H&MGR) is like having mates round to visit in a virtual way! At various times progress of the Boxcar has slowed, sometimes due to weather and perhaps sometimes, as in life, awaiting a new injection of enthusiasm, but always the wheels start turning again and the journey continues. Ireland and back to England, Scotland, Wales etc. before landing mid Irish Sea on the Isle of Man then off to continental Europe, Luxembourg in fact. Rapidly browsing back over the GSC topic as I write this there was one chilling moment reading where the Boxcar was travel on a railway who's owner recently left The GSC Round Robin Boxcar on the H & M Garden Railway this mortal earth. No doubt too there are a couple of railways that have ended their operating days or been rebuilt elsewhere but mostly the read is like a who s who of garden railways. Many of the railways having featured in the GSS Journal, Garden Railways or Garden Rail over the years. The Boxcar left Germany arriving in Tawa on the 1 st of October. So far it has travelled on the B&DR Railway and joined in the last run on Wayne s indoor DR empire. In the next few weeks the Boxcar should get around all the GSC member railways in the Wellington area before beginning it s journey around the rest of NZ before returning to Tawa for dispatch to Australia. Now this is where you come in. If you re a G Scale Central member, even if your not a regular poster, then either contact me by jdmcm.robinson@xtra.co.nz or if you in that big village north of the Bombay Hills contact Henrik dorbeck@xtra.co.nz or in the Mainland please contact Don Ellis don@computercables.co.nz and between us we ll co-ordinate its travel around NZ. It would be nice to have the Boxcar heading to Aussie towards the end of summer with lots of NZ railway names on it and some Kiwi mementos in it.

Page 20 From the Lincoln & Southbridge Workshops Report & Photos: Dennis Lindsay, Lincoln The completed curved turnout shown below the jig Project: Two new turnouts, one for the Wilson Valley Railway, where Andrew found that his branch line curve was not true and went under the ruling radius. This required the repositioning of the branch line turnout, but this meant a large radius curved turnout with an 8 outside radius and a 5 radius inside, which would give a superior flow to the track plan. The second turnout is for the Lincoln and Southbridge Railroad for the re-rail track, requiring a standard #6 left hand. The method of construction is using treated pine ties fitted into a Showing the turnout throw bar with switch in box below

Page 21 The completed left hand #6 and 5-8 curved turnout jig to achieve consistency. The ties measure 8 x 10mm. The rail is nailed down through the base of the rail with 15mm brass nails, later with the excess bent over to lock them down. I have found this method to be very strong when used outside in the weather. The frogs are live so they require a little more wiring than insulated frogs, but the result is superior running. QUAYLERAIL (Brass nails are available from Mitre 10 Mega stores) These turnout were made using Quaylerail. Quality 45 mm gauge brass track for indoor or outdoor use. Code 332 rail compatible with all overseas tracks Now available in5ft (1.5m) lengths, comprising 2 lengths of rail, plastic sleepers with two rail joiners, for only $50.00, plus postage, at cost. Track is in Kit form. Why pay $80.00 or more for imported track when you can purchase locally. Postage is the most cost efficient method to send the track. 3m lengths also available, but need to be shipped by truck. North Island orders will be despatched from Auckland. 22 Page 22 A Visit to The Fraser Line Report : Ian C Galbraith, Rangiora There was a good turn out at The Fraser Line in Kaiapoi for the Christchurch Garden Railway Society Running day hosted by Ross and Gwyn. Graeme Moar was first to arrive and set up his track powered train pulled by an LGB Uintah Railway articulated tank engine and a Sumpter Valley tender engine. Ian and Ann Galbraith, Alf Large and Lyn McClure were next to arrive and set out trains. Ian had an Aristo Craft C-16 battery powered, Revolution R/C loco and train of beer reefers. Alf Large had a Bachmann Porter, battery powered, revolution controlled loco with passenger cars. Dean Farrow had his Drewry 88 seat R/C railcar. Karl Arnesen s loco was used to pull Alf s coaches. Kabita Whale had her battery powered, Revolution controlled Mogul and passenger coaches. It was a beautiful warm sunny day and members and there families had a great afternoon of socialising and train running. One of the enjoyable parts of the afternoon tea was Gwyn;s Yummy Lemon Syrup. Christchurch Garden Railway Society Running Day 24 November 2013 Ian & Ann Galbraith 3 Church Street RANGIORA In Warren Stringer s report on the Running day at Murray Clarke s, Carterton he makes mention that not a lot of Garden Railways have names and suggests that an Official Naming Ceremony be held. With this in mind, although our railway has a name, and is still work in progress, as this will be our first Running Day since moving to Rangiora, we thought this would be the right occasion to have an Official Naming Ceremony and Ribbon Cutting We invite Members and their families to attend the Running Day any time from 10:00am. Bring your chairs and a picnic lunch. Tea, coffee, milk, sugar and cold drinks will be available. Bring your trains. There will be track power and the minimum radius curves are 5 feet. All turnouts are 10 foot diameter The Naming Ceremony will be at 2:45pm followed by afternoon tea. Ann and I look forward to hosting our first Running Day
