This is always with our partners within the station. Much of the work we do has the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games as the focus. Working towards the games allows for improved stakeholder relationships of those beyond the boundaries of the station. These include Argent and the Kings Cross development, the British Library, and many others. Whilst the focus is the games, there are some realtime legacy benefits in respect of much improved understanding of these other local organisations. In September, as an example, the station will benefit from many of the 4,500 students and staff relocating to the new Central St Martins University Campus 300 metres away from the station. Inspector Julian Dixon Whilst this will bring economic benefits to all on the station, we have to ensure that crime and disorder does not rise! We already have strong links with the university management to aid this goal.
Proactive operations tackle theft at St. Pancras Theft of Passenger Property has sadly seen an increase across London and we are not escaping that trend. Its disappointing to see this as the theft of personal property is an upsetting event. British Transport Police take this crime very seriously and have a dedicated team to investigate offences and conduct proactive operations to detect offences. On a local level, we conduct high visibility patrols and offer crime reduction advice to those who are using the station not only to travel, but to shop and eat at the restaurants. It is clear that our beautiful station has seen a huge increase in its number of visitors, or as its called within the industry, footfall. Most retailers would have reported an increase in revenue. Whilst not unique, St Pancras does have a very iconic status, recently enhanced more by the opening of the Renaissance Hotel. We have seen, as you will see later, a variety of high profile events and visitors. This overall atmosphere has in turn created an air of complacency with travellers which is where we, as interested parties need to work in a unified way to bring peoples attention back to doing their own bit to reduce preventable crime.. Part of that is covered by Operation YALE which sees our officers conducting crime reduction stands at different locations and times of the day. We have also had weeks of action where working together with our colleagues additional staff have visited all the mainline stations and actively engaged with passengers, with some considerable success. We also conduct plain clothes patrols, under the SPEEED (St Pancras Education Engineering, Enforcement and Disruption ) principles we have worked with industry partners to identify vulnerable property. Sergeant Steve Smith said It is my belief that St Pancras is a collection of individuals all doing different jobs to make the station the safe, secure, popular environment that it is. If we want to maintain that reputation we need to all do our part to help reduce the opportunities for the criminals to operate. Don t make it easy for them!!!
Bollywood comes to St Pancras It may not be apparent to all but St Pancras is becoming an extremely popular venue for filming of both news and dramas. The ITV news The Tonight programme, hosted by Julie Etchingham films it links here from the upper concourse, Dramas New Tricks and Under Suspicion have also filmed here but on May 21 we saw the arrival of Bollywood. The film company TEZZ based in Mumbai saw St Pancras as the ideal venue to film its remake of a Japanese classic The Bullet Train and in the afternoon the crew along with some of Bollywood s notable actors and a cast of about 100 extras took over the main concourse to shoot some pivotal scenes. We were on hand as requested to ensure safety and normal business before the shoot culminated at 2.30 in the morning on Sunday morning with dramatic scenes. The filming shows how the reputation of the station has spread worldwide and that can only be good for everyone connected with the station. The name s BOND Following the film world descending on the station, the literary world followed, with the launch of the latest James Bond novel. Author Jeffrey Deaver made his entrance by Bentley car escorted by the obligatory Girl on a Motorcycle to the upper concourse. Mr Deaver s previous novels include The Bone Collector later made into a film with Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie. Members of the original Bond author, Ian Fleming s family were waiting. Members of the Royal Marine Commandos then abseiled from the roof clutching copies of the books to be signed. Once again the St. Pancras team were on hand with the tasking team to make sure the event passed off safely. 3 of the St. Pancras Volunteers
Terrorism students visit St. Pancras International On Monday 16 May, undergraduate students on the Critical Approaches to Terrorism module took part in a field trip to Central London. The trip was possible thanks to the courtesy of Inspector Dixon of British Transport Police, who is responsible for counter-terrorism at St Pancras International which is, of course, an international port, being the terminal for Eurostar. Students were given a briefing by Inspector Dixon on the law and counter-terrorism policy in general and on specific issues facing police in St Pancras. This was followed by a demonstration of the skills of the explosive dog handlers in the car park, where the dogs and their handlers showed the students how explosive materials can be detected by careful dog work. Then the party proceeded to the concourse where a student volunteer, George Burr, took a pre-prepared suitcase containing a small amount of ingredients for an improvised explosive device and sat in the concourse, whilst the dog handlers worked systematically towards him. Much to the admiration of the students and George himself, the dogs quickly identified the offending suitcase, and George was nicked! All part of students experience of studying politics at Surrey! Professor Marie Breen-Smyth said "Many thanks to Inspector Dixon and his colleagues in British Transport Police at St Pancras for making the field trip possible."
Card fraud seminar At the request of our partners in Network Rail who were keen to have more awareness of the issues of card crime and ATM fraud a seminar was held at St Pancras for staff. Card and ATM crime is a growing problem and can be used to fun both organised and terrorist crime, so we were happy to arrange the training. DS Tony Blake and DC Clint Bond from the Metropolitan Police attended and gave a very useful insight into the activities of card fraudsters as well as being able to show staff what suspect skimming devices looked like. Hopefully the training will give our partners the skills and confidence in dealing with any such incidents. Operation GAMER In the run up to the spring half term Op. Gamer was run to focus on the issue of trespass on the railway but with particular regard to the High Speed Link, where trains run faster and quieter. Trespass can be just a case of persons crossing, but is often a means to graffiti or to steal the copper cable used for earthing. Initiated by PCSO Sam Clegg, the education phase of the operation was held at Langafel and Lawn Primary Schools in Northfleet with PCSO Sam Clegg and PCSO John Mott delivering the message and PC Dave Hillier at Wyevale and Godington Schools at Ashford. There was a very positive feedback from all the schools. Officers from Ebbsfleet and Ashford carried out joint patrols with The Land Sheriffs who are Network Rails dedicated 24 hour security team.the operation was successful in that there were no incidents of trespass reported during the span of the operation. Similar operations will be conducted in the run up to the summer holidays. In the courts At Blackfriars Crown Court on 2 June Oumar Balde was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment for possession of a false passport. An order was made to have the document destroyed and a recommendation for Balde s deportation after his sentence is served. A further false document offence couple with an offence of facilitating the removal of a minor was heard at Blackfriars Crown Court and the defendant Rashpal Singh was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment. On 27 May Paul Duffy was sentenced to 16 weeks imprisonment for four thefts committed at Monsoon and Fat Face stores in St Pancras. The sentences was welcome given Duffy has previously offended at St Pancras.
Letters of Thanks Its always nice to receive letters or other correspondence to recognise good work. Two recent communications reflect other work that officers here do. PCSO Klence Pougin our French speaking PCSO was called upon to help with he search for a vulnerable French man who had become separated from his party on return to the station for onward travel to Paris. After an extensive search he could not be found anywhere on or near Railway stations in Central London. The mail from Mr DeTuelet one of the carers showed how he had later been found in a pub and thanked Klence and her colleagues for the help and patience showed. An received from a Mrs Atkins recognised the good work done in respect of crime reduction advice offered within the station under the auspices of Operation YALE, the letter addressed again to PCSO Klence quoted I approached the officer 6830 interested in the posters displayed and wanted further information regarding property marking and to protect myself and my property from crime. The officer was very polite and informative. I think these types of initiatives are very important especially in a busy international train stations where tourists are at a great risk - Lesley Atkins. Reuniting owners with missing luggage prompted a thank you card being sent to PC s Eric Osborne and Dan Sutton from Katie and Mike Swift from America after they had lost their bags on route to Paris. Whilst crime and disorder figure prominently on our priorities, the letters show that we haven t lost sight of one of the other main strengths of the British police as a whole helping people who need help. Railsport Tournament in Blackpool 2011 On 11th/12th June weekend, BTP London North entered 2 teams into the Railsport 5-a-side football tournament in Stanley Park, Blackpool. The Railsport tournament was held over 2 days and is made up of teams connected within the railway industry. It was good to meet so many Train Operating Company employees at this event. On the Saturday morning, both teams played 3 games in the morning. Team 1, won their 1st game 1-0, lost their 2 nd game 0-4 and won their 3 rd game 4-0. Team 2 drew both their first games 0-0 and went into their 3 rd game needing a win, luckily they got it and won 1-0. Both London North teams qualified out of the group stages to the knock-out rounds the following day. Unfortunately, there were no medals won for either team, but on this occasion, it was the taking part that mattered. Next year, hopefully, we ll bring back the trophy to St. Pancras
