Dave Babulski, Chair of the Georgia Mineral Society s Micromount Section, will be our guest speaker for April. He will talk about mineral collecting in miniature and show some of his amazing mineral art as an example of some of the sidelines that can be derived from the micromounting hobby. Dave is a very enthusiastic speaker. His love of minerals and his personal explorations into all things miniature will inform and delight our members. A Jack of all Trades in the mineral collecting hobby, Dave will take us from selecting the perfect specimen to mount, through how to mount them on different media, to displaying the finished product. No doubt his love of these tiny beauties under the microscope led him to create master works of art that all can see without magnification! 3 Tips and Trips Page 3 April 2008 The Georgia Mineral Society GMS General Meeting March 3, 2008 Chamblee Library Meeting called to order at 7:32 PM by Bill Waggener. There were 45 people in attendance with one visitor and one junior member. Julian Gray was our speaker with a report on the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show. He brought along the book American Mineral Treasures: A Report on the Tucson 2008 Show with insights on mineral specimens from various collections and museums. Julian had pictures from the show of giant crystals, fossils, and display cases of huge mineral specimens with round the clock security. There were about 300 Shows in a 2week time with mindboggling specimens at each turn. Committee Reports: Membership: Lizabeth - We have 630 members. Programs: Anita - In April, Dave Babulski will have a program on micromounts. In May, John Trimble will talk about collecting and what to do with specimens. Secretary: Margaret A motion was made to read the minutes from the last meeting. The motion was defeated and the minutes were not read. There was a correction to the minutes made about Honeymoon Island. The sand was used to make the beach more attractive and not to keep us out. Treasurer: John We have about $50,000 with $57,000 from Merrill Lynch and $5,000 in interest from Sun Trust. Gem Section: Carl Thank you Barbara and George for the program on wire-wrapping. Next meeting on March 31 at Martha s on turquoise. RSVP. Mineral Section: Jay Meeting at Anita s on March 18, RSVP. Topic on Tucson and new books. May Show: Jay Martha has contracts and there are flyers on the table. Ginger will do the dealer dinner, Margaret will do hospitality, Tom will do exhibits, Mary will do postcards and mailing from past door prize entries, John will do demonstrations, and Eva and Jeanette with Olin s help are doing grab bags. Grab bag stuffing and Board Meeting will be April 20 at Kim s. Fossil Section: Martha April 21 at Martha s house with Carl as speaker. Micromount Section: Dave One person showed up for the last meeting. Maybe a combined Mineral and Micromount section meeting at a later date. Field Trips: George Glendon is not planning on opening up for spring because of liability issues. March 8 for Savannah River Agate, March 22 DMC trip to North Carolina, April 19 DMC to Chunky Gal, and April 25, 26, and 27 to Graves Mountain. Refreshments: Nancy Thanks Mickey for the food. Tips and Trips: Tom DMC field trip has wrong date on March Calendar. He is looking for articles. Education: Bill There was a Georgia Science Teachers Meeting and Jay and Kim gave out applications and stickers. There are mini-grants available for teachers in the field of earth sciences. One grant is in honor of Holly Camp for $300 and one from the Atlanta Geological Society for $500 for weather stations. The Georgia Performance Standards for teachers has been published in the Tips and Trips. Information was handed out about the Meteorite Society. Kim talked to a group. A Science Olympiad event is scheduled for Kennesaw on the Saturday morning of the May Show. Awards: Carl He wants to know who deserves what award. Library: Julian It is available at his house let him know if you need to use it. Special Events: Kim June 14 is the picnic. SFMS: Anita Meeting in Nashville on March 21. Lapidary classes are available at Wild Acres and William Holland for $330. Stamps: Olin Bring stamps, Richard recently won scholarship. Misc Reports: Carl brought in a small microscope. Tom said there is a rock swap at Graves Mtn. Julian announced the Rome Show March 15,16,17. There will be a pre-show dig for trilobites at 9:00 AM at Evans store. Bill brought up about Hackney Farms sale and we can purchase the area around the stream and road for $100,000. Old Business: Julian Gray received Honorable Mention from the AFMS for his Visions of Gold go down the toilet. Also he received First Place in Advanced Articles for the Bulletin Editor from SFMS. New Business: Mickey and Liz talked about a museum near Johnson City, TN where Miocene fossil skeletons are being excavated from a huge sink hole. They are finding whole skeletons of rhinos, tusked elephants, tapirs, sabre tooth tigers, new species of badger, and a red panda skeleton (about 60%) in tact. They have dug down about four feet and they estimate they have enough material to work on for the next 100 years. The students not only have their own site but they are documenting new species. In June there is a paleontological meeting and the museum is the Gray Fossil Museum. Door prizes were awarded and the meeting was adjourned at 9:15 PM. Graciously submitted, Margaret Ronan

Last year we discussed the Burgess Shale. It is one of the most eminent fossil locations in Canada. Most scientists consider this location a Lagerstatte. Carl Ziglin will be discussing these sites. Junior Field Trip Dahlonega Gold Museum Historic Site and Crisson Gold Mine April 19, A.M. To continue on our adventures in exploring the different mines in the North Georgia Mountains, we will meet at the Crisson Gold Mine at 11 am. Crisson Gold Mine is an actual open pit gold mine that was established in 1847 and was worked commercially until the early 1980s. They have been open to the public since 1969 and are the oldest gold mining establishment in North Georgia. After that, we can visit Dahlonega s Gold Museum, in which they have a new video on the gold rush. And as luck would have it, there will be an Appalachian Jam from 2 pm to 6 pm in the square. Listen to the sounds and songs of yesteryear on the grounds of the museum. 6 Page 6 Tips and Trips The Georgia Mineral Society April 2008 Grab Bag Stuffing Sunday, April 20, :00 PM Kim Cochran s House We will begin stuffing grab bags after the Executive Board Meeting. At the time of this writing I have 625 grab bags. I am sure that there will be at least 1000 by stuffing day. Then hope that there will be enough material to fill that many bags. Lunch will be served at noon before the board meeting. If you wish to have lunch please RSVP. For those that may not eat, a dessert will be served midway during the stuffing. with lights and sirens blaring, I will turn around and find another way home. Our trip on 15 Mar ended very pleasantly at the Valley and Ridge Gem and Mineral Show. And yes, we HAD to stay there for several hours to wait out the storms between Rome and Home. Respectfully submitted, Bill Waggener, President May Show News RSVP Kim The May Show plans are proceeding well; it s hard to believe that the show is only about 6 weeks away. President s Report for April You can tell the die-hard collectors: they go out even when severe weather threatens. The Halls Valley trip on 15 Mar is a prime example. Severe weather was predicted and yet more than a dozen collectors ventured out to collect trilobites and concretions. We were not oblivious to the conditions and did not tempt fate. We had an ace-in-thehole: our esteemed GMS weatherman, Mickey McClain. He watched the weather and our backs. His example showed me several tips for watching the weather during field trips. Most importantly, be prepared: 1) We discussed the forecast by the weather service. Several folks had looked at on-line radar images to look for directions and speed of the weather system. 2) Mickey continually watched the horizon in the expected arrival direction of the system. When he looked, so did I. 3) Mickey repeatedly checked for severe weather warning updates on a weather radio. Not many other folks even had access to a weather radio. 4) When the lightening showed up and the clouds got closer and closer, Mickey said it was time to go to the vehicles I went. 5) As the rains came, most folks got out without much problem. The last one out was not so lucky. Stuck in the mud with pouring rain, they were rescued by Good Samaritan locals who pulled them out. How will I prepare for possible bad weather next time? Preview weather conditions up to the last minute. Watch the weather as it develops (after all, a forecast is only a prediction). Carry a weather radio or cell phone that will access weather warnings. Leave when the conditions worsen and before it is too late. The material will still be there next time. Take a change of dry clothes for those times when all my precautions are not enough. Last but not least, if emergency vehicles go around me Margaret Ronan is coordinating the Hospitality Table. She will have a list for volunteers to sign up to work at the Hospitality Table. If you want to volunteer but cannot make the meeting, give Margaret a call. Ginger Peterson is coordinating the Dealer Diner this year on Thursday night. GMS provides the meat, drinks, plates, cups and other paper products. We need GMS members to bring a salad, vegetable or desert. Ginger will have a list where you can sign up to bring your vegetable, salad or desert for the Dealer Dinner The dinner is usually at 6PM so we would like to have the food as close to 5PM as possible. If you want to bring food but cannot make the meeting, give Ginger a call. John Trimble is coordinating the Demonstration Area this year. If you would like to give your feet a break and share your knowledge with others at the show by giving a demonstration, let John know. Tom Batcha is coordinating the Exhibit Cases this year. If you would like to share your collection with others at the show by putting in an exhibit case, let Tom know. Another job that needs to be done is stuffing Grab Bags. I think that I heard that Eva and Jeanette have been busy sewing bags that are ready to stuff with rocks, gems, minerals, fossils, and other treasurers. The Grab Bag Party will be a Kim s house on April 20 in conjunction with a brief GMS Board meeting. We will have to check with Kim on the timing of the events since I did not write that down in my calendar. The more hands, the faster things go and the more fun we have. An Official Field Trip of the GEORGIA MINERAL SOCIETY 9:30 AM Saturday, April 19, 2008 Chunky Gal Mtn., Corundum Knob Clay County, North Carolina Jeff_Deere of the Rome Club at the check in station The weather & turn-out were excellent. Attendance = 70+ Everyone found their share of treasure. NO FEE WHERE: Corundum Knob (also known as Chunky Gal Knob), Clay County, NC. WHEN: 9:30 AM, April 19, 2008 COLLECTING: Ruby corundum (pink to red), Spinel (black to brown "galaxite" and magnesio-chromite), Sapphirine, Talc, Serpentine, Brucite (white to blueish chalky chunks), Tremolite, Actinolite, Smaragdite (chrome-emerald green amphibole), Pyroxine (chrome diopside/sparse green micro-crystals of weathered amphibolite matrix), Fuchsite and Dunite. BRING: If you wish to screen sediments (this is "blind mining") for home washing/tumbler cleaning, you will need shovels, 3-5 gallon buckets or 2-3 gallon plastic bags (like those from the market), 1/4 inch (6mm) screens, hand shovels, gloves, and goggles. Most of the above minerals will be found this way. If you wish to collect smaragdite with ruby, sledge hammers, chisels, 3-5 gallon buckets, gloves and goggles (eye protection) will be needed. Please make sure your "tetanus" shots are up to date. Please wear boots/hiking shoes. This is tick country so check yourself especially if you dress lightly. Sprays with "DEET" are recommended. Watch out for snakes, because this is rattlesnake country. DO NOT STEP OR PUT YOUR HANDS WHERE YOU CANNOT SEE! DIRECTIONS: At the intersection of US-64 and US -441 (southwest of Franklin, Macon County, NC), interested parties/individuals will take US-64 west (toward Murphy, NC) to the Buck Creek Road turnoff (north). All field trip/ DMC members will meet here, because the entrance to Chunky Gal is unmarked. The Buck Creek Road turnoff is 17.5 miles west of Franklin, NC. In accordance with SFMS/ DMC rules, all participants must meet at the meeting site, and then we will proceed to Chunky Gal, which is one mile further west on the road. This is a "free site" for collecting in the Nantahala National Forest, BUT DO NOT DIG ANY DEEPER THAN 18 INCHES, under Nantahala National Forest Rules (Chunky Gal has been designated as a "rockhound collecting site.

9 Tips and Trips Page 9 April 2008 ACCOMMODATIONS: Franklin, NC is the best bet for lodging and restaurants, especially on US -441, US -64, NC- 28. DMC Program / SFMS Field Trip committee's purpose: To collect field trip information from it's member societies; schedule and coordinate field trip dates; disseminate field trip information to all member clubs so that each member society may publish this information as one of their "official" scheduled field trips. Graves Mountain "Rock Swap and Dig" 8 am to 6 pm, Friday, April 25, am to 6 pm, Saturday, April 26, am to 6 pm, Sunday, April 27, 2008 "You are invited to field collect minerals at Georgia's premiere mineral location!" The Georgia Mineral Society The caretaker in charge of Graves Mountain, Clarence Norman Jr., has announced plans to hold A three day dig and rock swaps on the Mountain during April 25, 26, & He will have the mountain open to collecting from 8 am to 6 pm each day. All participants must stop at the welcome table in the Hospitality tent to sign a liability release and make a small contribution to defray the cost of opening the mountain and providing porto-lets. There will be several golf cart type, four wheeled vehicles available to transport those participants who have trouble walking long distances. The dig will cease and everyone is expected to be off the mountain by around 6 pm each day. Participants will be allowed to park in a designated area on the mountain. Rock Swap and Hot Food/Drinks: Junior will set aside an area in the upper parking lot for tables to be setup for daily rock swaps. Anyone who would like to setup a table(s), please contact Junior at the phone numbers listed below. Hot food cooked on the grill, cold drinks and chips will be available for purchase on the mountain during all three days of these events. Don't forget to bring some extra money to buy the special "Graves Mountain Rock Swap and Dig" T-shirt! THIS DIG IS OPEN TO ALL. Mark your calendar and tell all your friends about this great event! Contact Information: Clarence Norman Jr. (Junior) (his business) or (his home) Graves Mountain code of conduct! Park your vehicle in the designated area(at the end of the paved access road but not much beyond the woods to the right of this road). NO child under the age of 12 years old is to be allowed on the mountain because of all the dangers involved. ALL pets must be kept under control and on a leash. The field trip leader(s) have final and absolute say as to where you may safely work. Ladders or power tools of any kind will not be allowed. (HAND TOOLS ONLY!) STAY AWAY FROM ALL HIGH WALLS!! NO REPELLING OFF OF ANYTHING! NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO DRIVE THEIR VEHICLE ON ANY PART OF GRAVES MOUNTAIN BEYOND THE PARKING AREA! (The caretaker must accompany anyone driving beyond the parking area!) EVERYONE NEEDS TO BE OFF THE MOUNTAIN BY DUSK. (Absolutely no one is allowed on Graves Mountain after dark.) Please protect our ability to field collect at Graves Mountain!
