THE NOVEMBER VIEW Logically it could be argued that it would be better to choose 2018 to write about memorials, but because our attention is so much on WWI in its entirety, it seems appropriate to do so now. Bob Escolme has written a fine article for us (on pages 18 and 19) about the names on our memorial. Look also at the inscription on the gravestone on our front cover. So-called Spanish Flu probably spread from Étaples near the front-line in France among the troops, who then brought it back to the UK (including to the unfortunate John Robinson). Some 250,000, mostly young, died in the UK about 20% of those infected. Worldwide million died. The Flu is now thought to have killed more in 24 weeks than has AIDS more recently in 24 years. Fortunately most flu strains are different from that one, but the recent news about Ebola virus reminds us of the ever-present chance event. The Imperial War Museum is making an archive of all 65,000 or so of our War Memorials. Ours is listed but the names of those on our Memorial may not be. Another website supported by the War Memorials Trust and English Heritage, is collecting pictures of all Memorials and of the inscription(s) on them. We are not included, but should we be? This is a question for the whole village which should ultimately be decided by a decision of the Parish Council, so please, if you care at all, let the Over Kellet View know what you think. You can OKView@overkellet.org, phone or drop a note into Meadowbank, Craggs Hill. Chris Pogson 3

LETTER FROM THE VICARAGE St Cuthbert s Church Over Kellet November 2014 Dear Friends PEACE The world is longing for peace, but can t find it because true peace isn t found in a pact but in a person The Lord Jesus Christ. So many people acknowledge this to be true yet they refuse to make peace with God. As soon as I ve settled down and have a family some say. Others are waiting until their children complete their university course, but the truth is that the peace that many are striving for is not found in excuses but only in a personal faith and trust in Jesus Christ. Whether you are at school, in the ministry or retired, that peace in your heart, your family, your home, is found in Jesus Christ alone. He says in John 14:27: I am leaving you a Gift PEACE of mind and heart. And the PEACE I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don t be troubled or afraid Find your peace through trusting Jesus Christ; you won t find it in striving for a fortune, struggling to do your best. Jesus Christ is the only source of peace in a world torn apart by conflict and greed. Peace is the assurance that Jesus Christ is always with us in every situation and every place we go. The PEACE Jesus Christ promises to all who trust Him is experienced when He is in control of our life. Your friends, The Rev. Ken and Sue Clapham Open all hours The Rev Ken, Sue and our Lay Reader Alan Hutchings are available for ANY parishioner or visitor to our parish who is ill or in need at home or in hospital; please contact Rev. 5 ST CUTHBERT S QUESTIONNAIRE The Parochial Church Council at St Cuthbert s is conducting a review of where we are now and what our vision and priorities should be for the future. We are aware that there will be major changes in the ministry over the next five years and we are committed to planning for the future, taking into account the needs and aspirations of the village community and also the mission of the church. As part of this process of developing a Mission Action Plan the congregation has completed a questionnaire and we have been encouraged by the thoughtful and positive comments made on the future vision for St Cuthbert s. We are very keen to seek your views on how you would like St Cuthbert s to be in five years time and what resources are needed to bring this about. We would therefore be very grateful if you would complete the questionnaire enclosed in this copy of the Over Kellet View and let us have your thoughts and suggestions on what we should be doing to ensure that St Cuthbert s moves forwards and serves the needs of our community in the years to come. The last questionnaire in 2007 confirmed that this was a worthwhile exercise as some of the ideas suggested have resulted in the establishment of a regular monthly Sunday School, occasional ecumenical services (the next being the Remembrance Day service on the village green), regular coffee mornings and we were initiators of the establishment of The Over Kellet View. Please give your completed questionnaires to the churchwardens, Joan Shaw and Mike Morris, any PCC member (Rev Ken Clapham, Andrew Cadman, Kath McLeish, Alan Hutchings, Nick Ward, John Halsey, Margaret Fancy, Amanda Morris) or put them in the box in the Village Shop by 14th November. John Halsey The result of the draw for October was: 1 st ( 25) Mr D Pringle (2) 2 nd ( 15) Mr T Shaw (74) 3 rd ( 10) Mrs J Galloway (151) THE 200 CLUB Congratulations to all our winners. We have 13 numbers not yet subscribed for. If you would like to have an extra one for 2015 or would like to join in from scratch, perhaps as a new resident of the village, please let me know (732892; chris@overkellet.org.uk). Chris Pogson 5 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS We are indebted to Lu Pan (Ludgero Paninho), Michelle Davies and Mike Richardson respectively for permission to use their photos of the Tagus sailing boat (in our previous issue), of Great Knott Wood and of the Great Crested Newt.

PARISH COUNCIL OCTOBER Most of October s Parish Council meeting was spent on planning matters with the application to build 72 homes near Winder Garth being the main focus of discussion. On behalf of the Council, Cllr John Crewdson had drafted a 30 page letter of objection. His key points included: The development was based on the false premise that 12,500 new homes would be needed annually in the future. The authors of the report which suggested this level of housing need were to be asked to re-consider their recommendations in light of new figures from the Office of National Statistics. The applicants had made reference to their consultation in Over Kellet but the findings were not accurately represented with equal weight being given to negative and positive feedback although the participants had been overwhelmingly against. Lancaster City Council s own public consultation on meeting the district s housing needs had found that incremental growth of rural communities was one of the least popular options. Water drainage and flood risk issues were a major concern. Cllr Crewdson highlighted areas which he felt had been inadequately addressed in the application including the use of the pumping station and the potential pollution of Swarth Beck. Cllr Nick Ward shared his experience of the impact of surface water and sewage flooding on Kirkby Lonsdale Road. The site was only 300m from Over Kellet Pond, a biological heritage site. As the Pond was home to protected great crested newts, any planning application should have considered the potential impact on such wildlife, but it had not. The Parish Council s continuing concern about road safety was mentioned as were the lack of amenities in the Village (e.g. no doctor s surgery). The lack of employment opportunities in the rural community and limited public transport provision were cited as factors which would lead to further increases in car journeys. Finally, Cllr Crewdson pointed out that earlier applications to develop this site had been refused on the grounds that there would be an unacceptable impact on a green-field site and the adverse impact on the landscape. Nothing had changed since those applications had been rejected. Following comments from other councillors and members of the public, this letter of objection would be submitted to Lancaster City Council by the new deadline of 24 October. Remembrance Day 2014 Cllr Ward explained that there will be road closures in place from 9.30am until 11.30am on Sunday, 7 November. Traffic will, however, be diverted around The Green so disruption should be minimal. The full minutes of this meeting are available at and on display on Village notice boards. Next month s meeting will take place on Tuesday, 11 November at 7.15pm at Wilson s Endowed C of E School. All Parish Council meetings are open to the public. Angela Huck 6

GREAT CRESTED NEWTS The pond in Over Kellet (The Dub) at the far end of Greenways is a nature reserve, looked after by the Lancashire Wildlife Trust. The main reason for this protection is that the pond contains five species of amphibians, the group of vertebrates most threatened worldwide; we have common frog, common toad, palmate newt, smooth newt and great crested newt. The great crested is the largest newt. Females can measure up to 16cm (6in) and are larger than males, which measure 14 15cm long. These newts have dark grey-brown backs and sides, and are covered with darkercoloured spots. Their undersides are either yellow- or orange-coloured and are covered in large, black blotches, different in each individual. Males differ from females by the presence of a jagged crest along their backs during the breeding season. A separate smoother-edged crest runs above and below their tails. They also have a silver-grey stripe that runs along the tail. Females have a yellow-orange stripe along the lower edge of their tails and often a marked orange stripe along the top of their lower backs and tails. The great crested newt breeds in still, fresh water, but spends most of its time on dry land. The animals prefer semi-natural habitats rough grassland (such as on The Craggs), hedgerows and scrub woodland. Newts breed from February to April. After this they wander on land, sometimes going 500m or more from the water. The population of Great Crested Newt has been declining since 1940, largely due to housing and agricultural developments. Because of this, it is protected under English law. The field identified for housing development in Over Kellet is only 300m from the pond and is certainly rough grassland. It may well be that great crested newts are to be found there. There are also reports that they are to be found in local gardens and ponds. Let us know if you have seen one of them in your area as soon as possible, please. Chris Pogson 7

WILSON S ENDOWED SCHOOL NEWS A Delicious Harvest Treat Pumpkins grown by the children adorned the tables for a special Harvest Lunch. Our school cook, Katrina Fraser, cooked a delicious, warming roast dinner followed by an Autumn Fruit Crumble served with piping hot custard. Parents, grandparents and friends filled the hall as they joined the children to share in this scrumptious treat. The pumpkins have since been turned into a warming soup by mum Amanda Morris and it was shared at our autumn school disco. Mummy Mystery revealed at the Museum! This term our whole school topic is Ancient Egypt. To deepen their understanding of the topic, all the children in the school have visited either Bolton Museum or Manchester Museum. Our older pupils became part-time archaeologists as they explored some of the 16,000 Egyptian artefacts at the Manchester Museum. In groups they used ipads to record their findings as they turned into history detectives and searched the Ancient Egyptian exhibition to find clues as to the way of life of one of the museum s ancient Egyptian mummies, called Asru. The children also had the opportunity to handle artefacts and they explored what they might have been made from and what they were used for. The day was completed by a whole-group time challenge to build a pyramid using large foam blocks of different shapes and sizes. They achieved the task by working together in just over two minutes! Norovirus Outbreak We have had quite a nasty outbreak in school in early October affecting staff, parents and children. Environmental Health provided support and the school had a deep clean by specialist contractors over a weekend. We kept to the advice that individuals had to be symptom-free for 48 hours before returning to school and this ensured that the school eliminated the virus quickly. Jo Williams Headteacher 8

WEATHER DATA FOR SEPTEMBER 2014 My late father had a saying When the last load of bales have gone over the hill it s time for winter. So, as I begin to write this month s weather review, October s weather is making itself felt with high winds gusting to 48mph, heavy overnight rain and fallen leaves blocking the grids and also covering the lawns. However, the weather in September will be remembered for the above average number of sun hours, warm days and very low rainfall. The Met Office reported that September was the driest for over 50 years. Looking back over my records, I can also confirm that the month had the lowest rainfall and highest number of sun-hours for the 12 years I have been keeping weather records for the village. During the month there was only one no-sun day and the total of sun-hours for the month was 171.1, well above the 10 year average of The sunniest 24h period was the 7 th /8 th with 11.1h. The hottest day was the 17 th with 22.5ºC (72.5ºF) and the lowest temperature was during the night of the 7 th /8 th with 5.4ºC (41.7ºF). The total amount of rainfall was only 15.6mm, again well below the village average of 115.7mm. The wettest 24h period was the 23 rd /24 th with 4.9mm. During the month the atmosphere was mainly stable. The pressure only fell below 1020mbar for an 18h period on the 10 th. This resulted in fine, calm and sunny days with misty mornings which soon cleared once the rising sun began to burn it off. It is interesting to note that, even though September 2013 had three no-sun days, it only recorded 92.3h of sun. In spite of having a dry spell from the 21 st to the 30 th the total rainfall for the month was 81.5mm, 22mm of which fell in the 24-hour period 8 th /9 th. Cloud Watcher 9

TWINNING The twinning visit to Bussières, from the 21st to the 26th of August, was as enjoyable and successful as ever some even said the best ever. Thirty visitors from Nether Kellet and Over Kellet made up the party, including children from both villages. This year the visit coincided with the village fête, which is a big affair in Bussières. That was a bonus for us because there were lots of interesting things going on in the village, including a funfair in the Square. The first full day of the visit was spent on a visit by coach to Clermont Ferrand and the Puy-de-Dôme. On the way there was a visit to a museum/workshop where the embroidered insignia for military uniforms, etc., were made. The Puy-de-Dôme is an extinct volcano, 4083 feet high, which you can go up on a rack and pinion railway. There was a picnic lunch at the top and a chance to explore. Afterwards everyone went to Clermont Ferrand to visit the cathedral, built of black volcanic rock, and to explore the old city centre streets. In the evening most families joined with others for evening meals. The next day was Saturday and the morning was spent visiting the local market before all getting together for a Jacob's Join lunch. After another excellent Jacob's Join evening meal it was time for the torchlight procession through the village. The procession was led by the band and accompanied by the Bussières firemen. Eventually the procession ended up at the sports field for a very impressive firework display. Sunday was a day spent with hosts and in the evening everyone made their way to the Village Hall for another meal and dance, all part of the fête. On Monday, we all walked from the nearby village of Violay to the Tower of Matagrin. The views from the top were excellent, although it was not quite clear enough for us to see Mont Blanc! Then there was a delicious and very lengthy lunch in a local auberge where we had the official speeches and exchange of gifts. In the evening there was a chance to eat baked potatoes (a curious local custom) at the Village Hall and visit the funfair for a last chance to win a spectacular prize. Then, early on Tuesday, it was time to bid a sad farewell to hosts and other friends in Bussières before setting off for the station in Lyon and the long trip home. We are pleased to say that the French are going to visit us next year, probably from April the 18th to the 23rd, so please keep these dates free in your 2015 calendar. 14 OVER KELLET NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH One common crime these days is bicycle theft. Bicycles are expensive, often too easy to steal and their loss can be very painful for both children and adults. If you have a bike, and haven t done so already, think about registering with BikeRegister ( If stolen and recovered by the Police, your bike can easily be returned to you. Firstly, your details are held on the secure online database, to which Police Forces across the country have secure access. If your bike is stolen you can flag it as stolen on the database. BikeRegister also provides protection for buyers and sellers of second-hand bikes. Those considering purchasing a second-hand bike can also check a frame number with the BikeRegister database to confirm it hasn t been reported stolen. Registering on BikeRegister means you could be reunited with your bike in the event of it being stolen, but it also helps to make it a hard target for thieves. Make sure you have a good, strong chain and use it every time you go out of sight. The police are visiting villages locally to offer free cycle coding look out for more information on this. ID SPOOFING Another new and potentially unpleasant electronic development, I m afraid. If you type ID spoofing into Google, near the top is an entry is for a product called Spoofcard (there are many others). This is a product that allows you to phone a friend and pretend to be somebody else, so that, for example, someone you know can be surprised to receive a call apparently from David Cameron, Wayne Rooney or Barack Obama. What fun! Or perhaps not. If you have an old-style phone which does not give the number of the person calling you, don t worry this scam does not work. If, however, your phone shows you the number of all incoming calls, perhaps to protect you from unwanted intrusions, it is possible that the number you see is not the real one but a spoof, that is, another number or a name purporting to be from someone other than the caller. This gives a way for salesmen or suspicious individuals to make contact with you. As an example, it might be that the number showed that you were receiving a call from your bank, and the caller might ask for personal information. Never, under any circumstances, give personal information to callers. It is always safer to call back, using a number you know to be the correct one. Ofcom is aware of the problems of ID Spoofing but it has been legal in the United States for several years and may be beginning to be more common here. Amazon sells Spoofcard! Chris Pogson TWINNING ASSOCIATION The AGM will be held on Thursday 9 October at 7.30pm at The Tithe Barn, Main Road, Nether Kellet. All are welcome to attend, but please ring Christine Holdsworth on beforehand if you plan to come. 14

NATURE NOTES Goldfinches continue to be the most numerous bird in the feeders in my garden. I only offer sunflower hearts which they seem to be very happy with. I have never seen them go for niger seed, the seeds of Guizotia abyssinica, a not uncommon garden plant in the UK. American Goldfinches, unrelated to our species, are avid consumers of niger. Numbers of tits of all three common species are less numerous than usual probably because, following a fine spring and summer, there is plenty of food for them in the open countryside. The roost of Little Egrets and the occasional Great White Egret in the trees opposite the lower hide at Leighton Moss is spectacular in the evening and in the early morning when they leave. The numbers have been increasing for several years. Egrets are related to herons. A small group of four or five mallard ducks has taken to coming to feed on the food which falls from my feeders. A neighbour in Greenways has seen a hedgehog in the garden being followed by a much smaller one. I don t see them in my garden because it is fenced to keep the cats out. Because of the fine spring and summer there is a large crop of berries. If there is a poor crop in Scandinavia this year, there should shortly been an invasion of Waxwings as happened last year. The last swallows will be leaving any time now. Keep your eyes open for them. Andrew Cadman 16

VILLAGE WALK GREAT KNOTT WOOD After parking just north of Finsthwaite village at SD369881, the group walked up the gently rising path through the woods to the north-west. After just over 1km, the track came out at the smaller of the two reservoirs and then progressed to the High Dam (not quite the Hoover, but quite impressive nonetheless). After rounding the top of the dam on Green Hows, the walkers then came back into the trees and returned to the road and thence to Finsthwaite Church. From there, the track led south across an open field to the corner of Highfield Wood and then round to High Parrock Wood and Great Knott Wood (right), which belongs to the Woodland Trust. As with the other woods visited, this was particularly spectacular in the autumn colours. The group completed the circle by coming back to the church from where it was only a short road walk back to the cars. WALK STOCKS RESERVOIR This was case of win a few, lose a few. It was a dry day in Over Kellet, but the walkers had a steady drizzle for much of their day! But despite the weather, all enjoyed the walk through beautiful countryside. Starting from the bend in the road at SD710574, the group followed the good track south-eastwards to the edge of the Reservoir and then along the western side to the Fishing Lodge, which also doubles as a coffee shop. Waterproofs on, they set off once more following the track anticlockwise across the dam and around the Reservoir, which had very little water. Lunch was taken at a site close to the ruins of St James Church and the submerged village of Stocks-in-Bowland. The path then followed the line of the Reservoir through Gisburn Forest. At New House the way then continued north-westwards before turning left and going over the River Hodder, the main feeder for the Reservoir. After passing Kenibus Farm, the group then returned to the road and hence shortly back to the cars a total of about 8 miles (12.8km). 17

THE FALLEN OF WORLD WAR ONE This seems an appropriate time to provide a thumbnail sketch of the brief lives of the ten men named on our WW1 War Memorial. Two were brothers Thomas and Ernest Edwards were the sons of travelling midget show people. Thomas was born in Paris, and Ernest in Germany. Thomas was a reservist before the war and was called up in 1914 to join a Welsh regiment. He transferred to The King s Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment) in 1915, and served in the Gallipoli campaign. Wounded and hospitalised, he later returned to his regiment in Flanders, and was killed on March 10 th His younger brother, Ernest, volunteered in In action at Arras he was badly wounded and taken to a hospital at Étaples. He died on April 17 th 1917 aged 30; like his brother he was a Private in the King s Own. Little is known of Joseph Western. He was living at Capernwray with his father on The Row (now demolished) in He was 14, and an apprentice plumber. He and his father had left the village by He enlisted at Nelson with the King s Own as a Private, and was killed in action on July 28 th 1916 in the Battle of the Somme. A second casualty of the Somme offensive was Gerald Lee Booker, son of John Lee Booker of Swarthdale Hall. He was working at Crewe in the works of the London and North Western Railway at the time of joining the Royal Fusiliers in Of officer material, he presumably turned down the chance of a commission, and died a Lance Corporal, aged 23, on October 19 th John Alexander was the son of William and Margaret of End Cottage. He worked at the Park Hotel, Hornby, before volunteering in He joined the Royal Garrison Artillery as Gunner and was aged 23 when he died on September 18 th at Passchendaele. Another Gunner who died in the same offensive was 18

Frederick William Bullough, headmaster of our village school from The school log for May 22 nd 1916 reads Am leaving school this morning to join the colours at Gosport. Promoted 2 nd Lieutenant, he was killed on November 8 th Thomas Townson was a carpenter, and suffered from a form of narcolepsy, which precluded his serving in the trenches. He was called up in January 1916 as a stretcher-bearer. Twice he was wounded, the second time seriously. Family tradition has it that a sister went to France to tend him. He died at Dieppe on December 5 th 1917, aged 25, before she reached him. Thomas Hodgson worked on the family farm at Birkland Barrow before he volunteered and joined the British Expeditionary Force in 1914, aged 19. He died of his wounds at Abbeville hospital May 1918, and was buried in the grounds. Arthur James Graham succumbed to the influenza pandemic of He joined the Royal Flying Corps as a Wireless Operator in 1915, and later became a Flight Sergeant and Chief Mechanic. He received the Croix de Guerre from Albert, King of the Belgians, and died in the Canadian hospital at Boulogne in November 1918 after the Armistice. John Edward Robinson joined the Royal West Surreys as a Private. Probably after being wounded in battle, he was transferred to the Labour Corps in He was on home leave when he contracted flu, and died nine days before the Cease Fire. He was buried in Over Kellet graveyard (see front cover). R. D. Escolme I am indebted to Gerard Lees for filling in the many gaps in my knowledge. He has written a well-researched book Thankful and Not So Thankful. R.D.E. 19
