Marylea (412) ) Ginny (239) Shellie (419) Travel Broadway Palm Dinner (Saturday Night Fever) was attended by 42 persons! The show was wonderful and everyone seemed to have enjoyed the show and dinner. Stay tuned for next year's show which should be posted at the end of March. We had a great turn out for our February trip to the Florida State Fair in Tampa - thanks to all of you who signed up! There may still be time to get in on one of our two one-day March trips that we put together to replace the St. Augustine trip that did not have enough people signed up. Friday, March 8, we are going to Plant City to the Strawberry Festival. We had enough response for a big bus so there is still room to hop aboard! Friday, March 15 we are going to Naples Botanical Gardens with a stop at Historic Tin City where you can just shop and sightsee and/or have a late lunch or early dinner in one of the restaurants there. Both trips are all day trips. Contact Kathy Russell at or Donna Ziegelman at to see if there is still room for either of these trips. Watch the travel bulletin board for an April day trip - still being planned. This is new for us. Usually we end trips with March - so we'll see what kind of response we have. The travel committee is working diligently planning next season's trips. We have what we think are some great ideas - hopefully you will too! Please get all your suggestions and ideas to Monique, Donna or Kathy. The best place to keep up with what we are doing is the travel bulletin board - we know not everyone does Facebook!! In April we should be announcing proposed trips for next season to get a feel whether or not there would be enough interest in them. Thanks for your support and for signing up for the trips! -Kathy, Donna, and Monique 2/27/2019 6

7 Sometimes fathers hope for a son to help them with their work, or to participate in activities that daughters often do not. That s only natural, but it plays into stereotypes that can be flat wrong. The wisest fathers realize that girls, with just a little motivation, and the opportunity, can do things every bit as well as boys. Those of us fortunate enough to have daughters have learned that often girls like doing the same sort of things as boys. When I heard the story of a woman here in Pine Island Cove who built a deck all by herself in just a few days, I had to find out more. I stopped by to meet Doris Tempesta at 4972 Gulfgate. We had not met before. She and her husband, Steve, have not been here that long. She told me all about her deck, and her family. I must admit, I was very impressed. We have many, many very talented women living here in Pine Island Cove. It has been my good fortune to know many of them. But I never knew of a woman who could build a deck, from the ground up. Doris admitted to doing precisely that, and all in just four days. Doris dad, Heiner, may have been one of those wise fathers Featured Article They Live Among Us Doris Tempesta by Steve Russell mentioned above, or perhaps just a very practical person, who, not having a son as a helper, recruited his daughter to help him. Heiner was the superintendent of a building in the Bronx. He started bringing Doris along to help him when she was only six or seven years old. At his side, she learned carpentry, plumbing, and electrical skills. That was her only training in those fields, and it has served her well through life. Doris had an older sister who was not interested in that sort of thing. On the other hand, Doris was very interested, so with an aptitude and opportunity, she became her dad s helper. Doris grew up in a strict German household in the Bronx and Queens in New York City. Her mother, Gilda, taught her how to cook, clean, bake, and sew. So, combined with what she learned from her dad she can, and does, do about anything and everything. Doris had two children when she met her husband Steve 30 years ago. They married 28 years ago. Her daughter Jennifer was six and her son Robert was eight years old. Steve adopted them both and proved to be a great father. He helped their son Robert earn the Eagle Scout award at only 14 years old. Robert is now 39. He has a degree in biology and microbiology, as well as a Masters Degree in Business Management. He and his wife live in Madison, Wis. They have two boys. Their daughter Jennifer, 37, has a girl and boy and live in Cape Coral. She works for Longhorn Steak House, where she is in charge of training all the waitresses and kitchen help. She is finishing a degree in Psychology and will graduate in August. So, how exactly did this deck come about? Doris and Steve are full-time renters. They asked the owner if he would allow them to construct a deck. They came to an agreement where the owner would provide the materials, and Doris would provide the labor. This was actually the third deck Doris had constructed. In four days from start to finish, the deck would be done. Steve was working as a security guard in the evenings at the time, which meant he was sleeping in the daytime. This would be Doris project from start to finish. continued on next page... 2/27/2019 7

8 She measured the area where the deck was to be built. Then she drew up her plans. She figured what materials she would use, and the quantity that would be needed, adding a little extra. Then she dug twenty holes for the posts with a posthole digger. She cut the treated 4x4 posts to the right length and planted them in the ground. Then she framed up the evolving deck with 2x4 s, leveling it as she went. To finish the project, she put the deck boards on top, screwing them down, each with at least ten screws. She has further plans to beautify their home. Doris intends to install a sprinkler system, then plant grass and trees along the side yard and the back. She dislikes the shell and rock found throughout the park and much prefers grass. She intends to beautify anything she can. Featured Article They Live Among Us Doris Tempesta by Steve Russell Doris husband Steve was born in Brooklyn. He joined the Navy after high school and was assigned to a cargo handling battalion aboard the USS Truckee. He left the Navy after four years, having become a Boatswains Mate Third Class. He then went to work for the Veterans Administration cemetery system at Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale, New York. He worked for the Veteran s Administration for 33 years. After meeting and marrying Doris they moved their family to Bushnell, Florida, where he worked for the National Cemetery there. In 1996 Steve joined the Navy Reserves out of Tampa. He was assigned to a Seabee outfit, a Naval Mobile Construction Battalion. He was in Iraq for two tours, for Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, with that battalion. They were stationed at Al Alasad Air Force Base, 237 miles northwest of Baghdad, right on the Euphrates river. It was an exceedingly dangerous place. They were often mortared from the nearby mountains, experienced frequent rocket attacks, and on the roads, the ever-present IED (improvised explosive device). Steve lost seven friends there, including his best friend. Steve retired from the Veterans Administration in 2011 with 33 years of service. In 2012 he retired from the Navy Reserves as an E6 Equipment Operator First Class with 22 years of service. Doris and Steve love the Pine Island/Cape Coral area. They also love that there are so many things to do here. They plan to stay here indefinitely and plan to buy the home they are currently renting. Doris and Steve are talented, hard-working, can-do people. Between them, they can do about anything, and we are fortunate they live among us.
