Alpacas seem to be taking the world by storm these days. Everywhere you look, someone has taken up Alpaca farming. Why is that? We asked Sally Kennedy of Stourie Brae Alpacas farm in Echo Bay what she saw in Alpacas. Then we asked Monika Pritchard of High Fibre Alpacas here on St. Joe the same question... and we sure got an answer from both! Alpacas are a rare, fibre producing animal of the Camelid family, first domesticated in the Andes Mountains of South America, some 6,000 years ago. Treasured by the Incas, their fine fleece was once reserved for Incan Royalty. Together with their close relative, HAPPY BIRTHDAY CANADA! Those Amazing Alpacas Adding a little fibre to our diet! The Real Estate Stop the Llama, the Alpaca provided clothing, food, fuel, transport and companionship. They ve been raised in Canada since 1992, with more than 22,000 now registered across the country many of them right here in Central Algoma. They have an average lifespan of years. Females average between 150 to 175 pounds, while males average between 160 and 190 pounds, with some big boys weighing in at over 200 pounds! They are environmentally friendly, since they have padded feet, rather than hooves. And, unlike sheep, they don t pull grass out by the roots when they re grazing. It is fine, beautifully soft, warm and hypo-allergenic. There are 22 recognized natural colours, but the fibre also lends itself well to dying, if you re looking for something even more different. There are two primary kinds of Alpacas: The Huacaya is the most common, with a soft bonnet of fleece on the forehead, and dense body fleece which grows straight out of the body. The Suri is less common and has long, pencil-fine locks that hang straight down from the body. The best fleece comes from the animal s blanket, which is the back, side, shoulder and rump, advises Sally. The first baby clip commands a premium because of its extra fineness. After we ve sorted and cleaned the sheared fleece, we send it to a mill for processing into yarn that can be used for making any number of goods, as well as batting for quilts. I have some items I ve done myself, for sale at the Echo Bay Agricultural Coop Store (open Monday through Saturday 8:30 am to 5 pm). It s all Alpaca, and it s all wonderful! beams Sally. Alpacas are very intelligent and easy to train. They re quick to pick up many training behaviours, such as accepting a halter, being led, lifting a foot for toenail trimming, or stepping in or out of a trailer. They communicate with each other more by body and tail postures than by sound, although they will emit a shrill sound when alarmed. And yes, they DO spit, but only when aggravated, feeling threatened, or establishing a pecking order for feeding. They don t like to be petted says Sally with a smile, because to them, it tickles! Sally Kennedy and one of her young alpacas Alpacas are also more communal than most herd animals. Unlike most animals, they even share a common dung pile and wait their turn, if another member of the herd is using it! Watching Sally guide her herd is like watching a symphony conductor. She is one of only three people in Canada to be certified as a Camelidynamics Handler. Camelidynamics is the kind, respectful, trusting, safe and efficient handling of camelids. She doesn t need to physically grab or hold her animals she just places her hand out for a light touch in strategic places, such as under the chin, and the animal does what she wants. Alpacas are very aware of their surroundings, and I ve taken great pleasure in discovering the Zen of being near them. They give me a great deal of peace smiles Sally. Sally clearly loves her four legged friends, and what she does. At first, I thought it all looked too good to be true, and it was! Since starting out, I ve worked my way through a steep learning curve, learning so many things, such as nutrition, how to do their nails, how to give shots and the best times for shearing. Shearing needs to be done when the fleece is about 5 inches long, since the shearer can t handle anything past 6 inches. But I wouldn t trade any of it for anything else! Monika Pritchard, of High Fibre Alpacas on St. Joe Island, agrees completely. She and her husband Mike are also devotees of these mystic, peaceful creatures, and keep their herd at Sally s farm as well. Between them, they currently raise and care for a combined herd of 23 animals. And there will be some new arrivals soon, with Monika about to move a new young female from another farm, and 4 babies on the way! A sign of true contentment. Everyone asks us why we don t have our herd here on the Island. We d love to have them here, but our property at Sailors Encampment isn t suitable for Alpacas. We re hoping to solve that problem very soon, and as soon as we do, our herd will come home to St. Joe! Monika promises. Stay tuned for more news, hopefully soon! In the meantime, I spend as much time as possible at Sally s farm, and when I can t be there, I know that they re getting the best possible care and attention. Sally and Monika share the same ideas and values about their beloved Alpacas, so they re able to work well together. Last April, they spoke at a Lions Club dinner, followed by appearances at the Legion s Maple Syrup Festival and Sault College s Quilt Show. You ll also find them at the Hilton Beach Open Air Market on Saturdays throughout the summer, as well as the Plowing Match in Richards Landing and the Laird Fair in August. 5 I ve only been doing this for 3 years, says Monika, but I m now getting enough fleece to make into some wonderful Alpaca products. Like Sally, a selection of Monika s Alpaca products can be found at the Echo Bay Agricultural Coop Store, as well as at her Sailors Encampment home, by appointment. Sally and Monika are true converts to the Zen of being near Alpacas, and they re always ready to share their experience with these amazing animals. They re always happy to do farm tours and provide educational material, although they d appreciate it if you called ahead before coming. Go see Sally and Monika and their charming, irresistible friends! We re glad WE did! We re sure YOU will be too! We could all use a little more fibre in our peace and tranquility diet! Her 4 year old gelding Wee Willy came off the table, took a bunny hop and broke his leg. There were seven of us there and none of us can figure out why this happened. A vet call and leg splint didn t help. On day 9, the leg started to swell, which meant infection, and the difficult decision was made to put him down. Sally shares her parting thoughts: He was a kind, gentle thinking Alpaca with great fibre. We all miss him, Alpacas and Humans alike. Thank you, Wee Willy, for spending time with us. Morris, an 82 year-old man, went to the doctor to get a physical. A few days later the doctor saw Morris walking down the street with a gorgeous young lady on his arm. A couple of days later the doctor spoke to Morris and said, You re really doing great, aren t you? Morris replied, Just doing what you said, Doc: Get a hot mamma and be cheerful. 6 RECIPE CORNER Judy Wells Cherry Pound Loaf 1 1/2 C. flour 1/2 tsp. salt 1 C. sugar 1 C. maraschino cherries a c a s u a l d i n i n g e x p e r i e n c e (705) Tuesday Sunday 11 am until 10 pm (Opening on Mondays starting July 13th) 1/2 C. milk 2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 C. butter 2 eggs Dredge cherries in flour. Sift dry ingredients into medium size bowl. Cream butter & eggs. Add in flour mixture. Stir in milk & cherries. Line a loaf pan with waxed paper and fill with batter. Looking over Lake Munuscong in the St. Mary s River we have a view of morning mists and sunsets; ships going up and down the channel and flora and fauna of all kinds. The marshy setting is home to reeds, grasses and shore birds that raise their families in the area. From my surroundings I develop a visual language which I translate into my own personal imagery. I like to work with paper and fabric and create pieces that are colourful and tactile. Found materials often find their way into the picture. Recently I have been interested in finding old (or cheap) chairs and tables and upcycling them to become new works of art. Some of the pieces are functional and others are not. Fantastical items are unique and definitely one of a kind. Provençal fabrics that I have collected are incorporated in accessories cushions, lamps and mirrors. My Insect Collection is growing as I work with vintage papers and fabrics along with twigs, small wasp nests, beads Page 8 and seeds. These multi-media works present nature in a new refreshing way. The Marsh Series highlights the tall grasses and reeds and the beautiful birds that patrol the shore. Herons, bittern, gulls and eagles soon become embedded in my psyche and the pieces that evolve. How easy is it to scan colour slides and can this be done with a home computer? ANSWER: Scanning slides with a home computer is certainly possible. Most importantly, you must be dedicated and disciplined enough to get through a lengthy process. Leaving aside commitment, let s look at the necessary equipment. The computer must be strong, fault-free, extra RAM, Pentium 4, running Windows XP or Vista, with gigabytes of free space on the internal hard drive. Most home scanners are of the All-in-One printer-scanner-copier variety and are simply not equipped for scanning slides properly. Transparency scanning, the official name for slide and negative scanning, requires a special holder, a backlighting lamp, and high-resolution capability. HP, Canon, and Epson offer many scanner models with this transparency scanning option. You might consider a batch scanning feature to reduce tedium. Expect to spend $150 or more for a decent transparency scanner. A truly professional transparency scanner like Nikon s Super Coolscan 5000 costs over $1,000. Digital scanning services are available and should be considered. Cost per slide starts at 40 cents including free colour correction, exposure correction, and free cropping. Taxes, shipping and DVDs are extra. Doit-yourself and save money. Do you buy a slide scanner? First, check if anyone you know has a good quality scanner with the slide scanning feature. A clean, uncluttered work surface is essential. Have canned compressed air standing by to remove dust and other particles from each slide. Wear lintfree gloves. Scan each slide into TIF format using high resolution. Use a photo-editing program such as Adobe Photoshop to rotate, crop, and to adjust exposure or colour all in TIF format to prevent losing quality. Rename all slides using a numeric scheme such as 001, 002, 003, etc. to view slides in the preferred chronological sequence. Batch convert to JPEG format using Photoshop. Part two will explain the present, and our needs of the future. The hospital has always been more than just a building to the people of St. Joseph Island and the surrounding communities. They have donated money, cooked, gardened, painted, equipped, and sponsored Community Nite in Richards Landing for it, since At the end of World War I, members of the Women s Institute spearheaded a drive for a local hospital. In 1924 a three bed ward was set up, and operated as a Red Cross Outpost. This was found to be too small, and a year later, the home and property of John Richards (the site of the present building) was purchased. In 1926, it was burned to the ground. Insurance was $33,000. There was no hope of rebuilding for that price. Then a miracle happened. A summer visitor, Mrs. Mortimer Matthews, came forward with an offer to build a hospital as a memorial to her husband, who had recently died of a heart attack in a row boat near Richards Landing. 15 Memorial Hospital Association was incorporated in November, 1926 and the new building was officially opened in In the 1950 s, once again there was over-crowding, and another miracle occurred! A former Island physician, Dr. J. E. Godfrey, offered the sum of $40,000, to be matched by local contributions. The new wing opened in 1953, dedicated to Dr. Harold S. Trefry, who had been responsible for setting up the first medical plan in Canada to include surgery. In the early days, the Island s summer colony worked shoulder to shoulder with local residents in supporting the Hospital. In 1984 the Plummer Hospital signed an agreement with the Matthews Memorial Hospital Association to operate it as a hospital. I was on the Board (which owns the hospital) at that time and we were concerned that it not be closed. Lo and behold, in 1994 the Plummer closed our beds, but not without a fight. The Matthews Memorial Hospital Association went to court to fight the loss of beds, but lost the first round to keep the beds until they could make other arrangements. Although the Association had some money, (thanks to Mrs. Matthew s gift of $1, worth of Proctor and Gamble stocks per year from 1926 until her death, Community Nite proceeds, donations, and the wise investing of the hospital board), they felt the financial need to give up the fight.
