It seems that our group competes with another larger group for service on the same night. In an attempt to resolve our ongoing issues and achieve a satisfying experience for our Members and guests while still remaining at Canyon Creek, I am happy to report that your Staff successfully negotiated a change for our Chapter Gatherings from the fourth Tuesday of the month to the THIRD Tuesday of the month. The vendor seems anxious to please us and wants to work with us to meet our needs and keep our business. We hope that this move will eliminate some of our previous challenges. As a result of our conversations with them, the March service was much improved. The revised Chapter Gathering schedule is below. 4 PAGE 4 The D Man s Block Director Dwayne Bubba Riding season is upon us. We ve already had a scheduled ride and an impromptu ride this year. With the weather getting warmer, let s get serious about riding as the regular season has started. We have many day rides coming up and a few overnight and long rides in the future, so let s make sure our bikes are ready to ride with everything working. Also, the District Convention will be here soon, so we all need to get ready for an invasion of bikes and people. Since we re the host Chapter, let s make a GREAT impression on all who attend. We ll have several opportunities to participate in the Convention and still have a good time. We re increasing in size every year so this means our riders and bikes are growing on the rides. We may need to start having two groups on the rides to increase safety in the traffic areas. If this comes to pass, communication will be very important between the riders and the groups. A CB will be required at the lead and drag of each group. This will only be for the traffic areas where cars will want to pass and pull into our groups. When in the country, a single group will still work fine. We can handle what little traffic there is in those areas. There are still a few months available for anyone who would like to be a gathering leader. If anyone is interested, please let me or Glen know so that we can get you on the calendar. As most of you can see, it s not a difficult job, just follow the Agenda. Try it, you might like it! I m very proud of the work the team is doing, and it shows with membership, rides, and even the District likes what we re doing. So KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK and let s keep growing. Dwayne Ellison Chapter Director Be so good they can t ignore you. Steve Martin

5 PAGE 5 Ride Coordinator Ramblings Glen Our riding season is already off to a SMOKIN good start, with our group taking three great rides over the past four weekends. Our first scheduled ride on March 12 was the Mystery Ride. That ride took us to Reynolds Creek grade and wound between steep volcanic buttes, yawning canyon mouths, and a chalk mountain before reaching the end of the pavement at the top of the Owyhee Front. The view of the Treasure Valley from that vantage point was pretty amazing. We rode over to Marsing where we were promptly brought to a halt on Main Street for 20 minutes while we waited as hundreds of marathon runners crossed the Snake River Bridge. After the last runner passed by, we crossed the bridge and headed east across southern Canyon County and ended up at Enrique s in Kuna for lunch. Thanks to Joey and Pam for holding our tables at the restaurant to ensure that we could all sit together in a group! Sonny and Bubba set up and led the first Impromptu Ride on Saturday, March 19. We passed through a corner of Oregon and then re-crossed the Snake River back into Idaho, drove through a corner of Payette, and then headed east on Hwy 52. We had a delightful lunch at Tom s Cabin, the second time our group has visited that establishment. From there we passed through Emmett and followed 52 along the Payette River over to Horseshoe Bend. We drove south on Hwy 55 before reentering the Treasure Valley at Eagle. Sonny and Bubba set up another great Impromptu Ride on Saturday, April 2. Weather was cool and sunny with signs of spring everywhere. I spotted Sand Hill Cranes standing together in a field, the most I have ever seen in one place. We were pleasantly surprised by a great lunch and great service at the Ola Inn. The next Chapter ride will be to Owyhee Reservoir on April 9. Unfortunately, both Bubba and I will be working that weekend at opposite ends of the State of Florida and we won t be able to make the ride. Sonny has graciously volunteered to ramrod that ride in our absence. KSU 9 AM at the Nampa Chevron on Franklin and I-84. Lunch will be at that great pie place in Vale, OR. Please RSVP to Sonny sodavidson9@gmail.com so that he can alert the restaurant with a head count. The Chapter s 2016 Ride Calendar indicates a ride to Joseph, OR on Friday, June 24 and returning on Sunday, June26. Originally scheduled as just a single overnight ride, this ride was expanded to two nights at the March Chapter Gathering. The complicating factor is that the Indian Lodge Motel where we normally stay is booked pretty solid that weekend. However, they do have 5 single King cottages available three blocks away that are still available. If you are planning to make this ride, I would recommend that you call Debbie at the Indian Lodge and schedule a room as soon as possible. She can be reached at A man s Rider s motorcycle duties are never done! Glen Goff Ride Coordinator Everyone needs a friend that will call and say, Get dressed, we are going on an adventure. 6 PAGE 6 Tom Chapter Education & Safety RIDE SMARTER II Ace H. Peterson, Region F Educator gwrra.org/regional/ridered/news/june2008 (Edited) Many of our Members are preparing for Wing Ding which can be a far piece of road for some riders and co-riders. The old dog says to start easy with shorter rides lasting only an hour or two, a hundred miles or so, and then start stretching time and distance out. Remember, we aren t as young as we once were and many of us are not in the best of physical condition due to life style. However, those things which affect our mental outlook are vital to whether or not we should be on a motorcycle. In other words, we need to feel right to be able to stay on top of our riding game; anything less brings potential problems. Let s discuss riding length both in distance and time as mentioned above. The question we need to address to ourselves is: How far is too far and how long is too long? Both of these questions are interrelated. Again, consider the age, health, riding time, and physical attributes of both the rider and co-rider. Most of us don t have iron butts and have no business attempting all day rides covering hundreds of miles. It takes the joy out of riding if either the rider or co-rider becomes tired or uncomfortable. These symptoms lead to mental breakdowns as far as riding skills and decision making during these long days. Address length and time whether riding alone or with a group. Set markers of how long to ride, how far that will be, where the stops occur, and so forth. Pick out the factors which make the ride enjoyable, safe, and reasonable. For instance, 350 miles plus or minus might be a good day. There are days when we may ride longer and some days less. How long then does it take to cover those 350 miles plus or minus? Now the objective is to start early and finish early. Then we can relax, rest up, have a great dinner, and be refreshed to start over the next day. And the time frame given includes fuel and snack stops including taking an hour for lunch to cool off physically and rest ourselves mentally as well. Last, lets factor weather into all this riding smarter business. Heat and cold affect us as riders and co-riders dramatically and it does not matter which we are. If our internal thermostat dictates either item, the ride becomes an endurance ride rather than a joy. We all recognize that parts of the country we ride in during the riding season get hot. We can use many methods and types of clothing to combat the heat factor but remember, even these items are only temporary measures. If it is not imperative to make a certain destination before the day ends, who says we have to? Take refuge in a movie theatre, shopping mall, or similar facility during the hottest part of the day, and then continue after it cools down enough to be comfortable and SAFE to finish the ride. That is a great philosophy for us riders and co-riders as well. Ride smart by not pressing on when temperatures become unbearable and make us unsafe to be on the road. Remember, you the rider and your co-rider are the only ones who can make the decisions necessary to ride smarter and safer. You can fill in the blanks of this article using it as a thought process to develop your own strategies for riding throughout the season. Our head is to be used for something other than to carry our helmet on, so use your decision-making ability to make our riding season the best season yet. Tom Galas Chapter Educator Each day learn something new, and just as important, relearn something old. Robert Brault

7 PAGE 7 Membership Enhancement Bill & Nancy Membership is not only the responsibility of the MEC but everyone in the Chapter. The Area Run List that comes out monthly is a good source for new members, but the Members are a much better source. Last month Don & Beverly Waters joined us after they were contacted by phone and they decided to check us out. Most of you met them at the March Chapter Gathering. We welcome them. New Members are needed for growth and some may become involved with perhaps new ideas to make Chapter T stronger than it already is. We all like to talk about our motorcycles regardless of the make or model, two or three wheels. When you see someone on a motorcycle, why not ask them to join us on a ride or a Chapter Gathering. Some members carry copies of old Wing Worlds and the Gold Book to show what we do. We've given out handlebar hangers, and I am working on a business card size invitation for you to carry and give out to any motorcycle rider that you meet. The weather is getting warmer and you see more motorcycles on the road. That gives us more opportunity to share our passion for riding and the FUN we have when we're together. 8 PAGE 8 Did you ever wonder -- Where did that expression come from? On a recent scouting trip for the cycle group, we stopped in a park in Caldwell for a turnaround and I noticed several species of waterfowl on the water. Glen laughed and advised that the mass of black waterfowl I was photographing were coots, not ducks. I had never even heard of a coot other than referenced in the expression that old coot. It got me to thinking: Where did that expression come from? And from there, my curiosity took query and the results were quite entertaining. I hope you will enjoy a bit of levity and a deviation from tire pressure, battery tenders, gravel, dead key fobs, and group riding! That old coot! Not exactly a term of endearment but rather used to describe a cranky, surly, or pesky old person. (I got that one right! By the way, who defines old anyway?) Duck hunters consider coots pests because of their sheer numbers and their less than palatable taste. No one mounts a coot over their fireplace! Coots aren t even in the duck family but belong to a family of water birds. Stick in the mud. Dates back to beaver trapping when the traps were anchored by a notched stick. If the trapper saw his stick floating on the water, he knew there were beaver. The stick in the mud expression today means an individual adhered to the proven and established way of doing things. Today we would consider such a person an irascible old curmudgeon or he is an old stick in the mud. Wet behind the ears. Greenhorns, newcomers to the mountains, still had to learn to ford rivers and streams and sometimes got caught out in the rain. If a person got soaked, they then became unreliable in case of attack, trouble, and so on until such time as they dried out, cleaned their weapons, and were dry again. Hence, still wet behind the ears came to mean someone who still had a lot to learn. Up in arms. This goes back to when people actually appeared all up in arms (weapons). The arms were rifles, knives, hatchets, and assorted other weapons. Selfpreservation dictated that people had to be able and ready at a moment s notice. It was a show of anger or force. Lock, Stock, and Barrel! (No, it isn t just the downtown Boise steak house.) One who bought, got, took, sold, had everything lock, stock, and barrel traces directly back to the frontier rifle or shotgun when the main parts of a rifle were bought individually -- lock, stock, and barrel. This has been handed down as a saying for a total, complete transaction of every item that was for sale in a given purchase. Keep Posted. Messages used to be posted on trees, poles, etc. letting everyone know where and when some event would be happening. (Reference: Bing; MuzzleBlasts March 2016) Are you getting hungry yet? is actually man speak for What time is dinner? Joey Goff

11 PAGE 11 Special Program & Event Coming in May We have a special program and event planned during the May 17 Chapter Gathering including a couple of exceptional door prizes. You don t want to miss this one! We hope to have as many Members present as possible in their full and complete GWRRA regalia and wearing our new Chapter shirts. Glen will have his camera primed and tripod ready to get some excellent single, couple, and group shots. It should be a FUN evening and we hope to see you there! ANTE Closing Thoughts Joey The Chapter calendar seems to grow larger by the minute. There are many rides already scheduled, and impromptu rides are popping up as time and weather permits. In addition to hosting the District Convention in July, there is Wing Ding in August-September. Whew, busy year, busy group! Now there are signs of spring everywhere and before you know it, the heat will be here. It seems that I have spent a majority of my time coordinating future events including our Annual Christmas Party. Our last two parties have been at Louie s in Meridian with good food, great service, and a great price. It has been challenging to find other appealing options in that same price range, and trust me, I have found nothing less than $25 per person and not family style like we get at Louie s. Yikes! In the interest of prudence, I have booked Louie s for the 2016 party on December 10. If any of you have other suggestions that you have researched, please let me know. This group is now far too large for potlucks and frankly, being able to relax and let others do the cooking and the cleanup allows us much more flexibility in an actual party environment. Until next time keep smiling! Your stories, anecdotes, or unique experiences, with or without pictures (incriminating evidence) to share with the Members. Deadline for submission is ALWAYS the first day of each month. Consider it and let us all share in your experience!
