1 Welcome to February. Let s hope Punxsutawney Phil does not see his shadow on February 2nd and that spring is near.doubtful. Things remain relatively quiet around the Village. Some projects are still afoot. The second phase of the Front Gate Remodel is underway. New walls, a new flowerbed, a new Village sign, and some curbing will be rounding out this phase. There should not be noticeable traffic delays, but there might be some traffic revisions at times to allow some of the work to be completed. The work done by staff and I & I Industries to clean the culverts, vaults, and pipes from the Golf Course to Thunderbird Lake are paying dividends. The Golf Course still sees some flooding with the storms, but as tides go down, the south end of the course seems to be emptying much faster than in years past. The new Guards Program is being introduced to Security personnel. There may be some delays in getting people, especially guests, into the Village as the guards learn to traverse the new program. Be sure to fill out your Guest Authorization Cards so your visitors will be admitted without delay. The second phase of the Marina Maintenance Program will be ongoing soon. Last year, Docks A & B had a number of hinges replaced and some upgrading of some of the structures. This winter, Docks C & D get the same treatment. The new Launch Dock will be getting a retro-fit to adjust for high tide water levels. This should be ready for the boating season. The Launch Ramp Project is still in its discussion stage with BP. As per the Governing Documents, the Election Committee must be approved by the end of January each year. This year sees a major change as the Chairperson, Sherri Bakke, has her residence on the market and they will be heading to Oregon. Sherri has been in charge of the Election Committee for the last few years and will be hard to replace. Sandra Bogen will be the new Chair and most of the committee returns intact. There was a time that the ballot counting would last all day and over the last few years the committee has finished the counting by noon. They have it down to a science. Thanks to Sherri for all her assistance with the committee and her other involvements with the Village. Continued on page 2

2 Page 2 Birch Bay Village Bulletin - February 2013 CONT D FROM THE MANAGER Just a reminder that first half dues assessments are due January 1st with a grace period to the end of the month. To avoid late charges, make sure your dues are paid prior to the month ending. The late charge has been amended this year from the customary $125 to a 10% fee. This will make it fairer, especially those who were late for the second half only and were charged $125 on a $600 assessment due. Those on payment plans are now required to file payment plan paperwork with the Office before the end of the month. This does not include the first half/second half scenario that has always been in place. Only those making quarterly/monthly/or irregular payments need signed plans filed, as well as those with delinquent accounts. Those with delinquencies are required to make plans that cover the current year plus also make a positive direction on the unpaid prior years balances. There are still some vacancies on committees if anyone has a notion to try committee work. We have had a couple apply for the Security Committee, one for Lakes, and one for ACC. There are still more opportunities so stop by the Office and ask how to get involved. It s a good way to meet people, give back to your community, and learn more about the Village you live in. Even though things slow down a bit during the winter, there are still plenty of activities happening daily around the Village. Check out the schedule of events in this Bulletin and attend some of the functions. The Groups and Clubs would enjoy having new participants. Or, just stop by to see what is being offered. You might enjoy yourself. The weather hasn t seemed to deter most of you from walking/jogging. Be careful with the shorter days (getting longer now) and the inclement weather. Watch for ice and puddles and traffic. Even in the winter, the beaches are a pleasure to enjoy. Be careful along the bluff. There have been a couple of major slides farther to the west of the Village, so don t get lax walking below the cliffs. Hope to see everyone around the Village enjoying what we have to offer.
