Petty WHEREAS, the trend in Nevada acres burned each year by wildfire has increased dramatically in recent decades from less than 25,000 acres before 1980 to over 600,000 acres: and WHEREAS, wildfire has had significant impacts to Nevada s wildlife, environmental, economic, and social well-being; and WHEREAS, millions of animals are burning; and WHEREAS, the Federal Government has caused a reduction of 50% in cattle grazing and over 90% in sheep grazing; and WHEREAS, most fires begin on Federal Land and spread to private land and fires would be decreased ifthe Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management would increase grazing; and WHEREAS, most homes destroyed during wildfire are due to embers landing on something easily ignited on or near the home; and WHEREAS, ember-ignited fires can then spread from home to home, destroying entire communities; and WHEREAS, Nevada homeowners could substantially reduce the wildfire threat to their homes and communities ifthey were proactive and prepared in advance and fires could be greatly reduced. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, this resolution is a means of education, a call for the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management to increase grazing to reduce fuel loads and a call to action to prepare for the ember threat, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Elko County Board ofcommissioners do hereby proclaim the week ofmay 1-8, 2010 as NEVADA WILDFIRE AWARENESS WEEK and call upon all citizens, agencies, organizations and businesses to become further educated and take steps in preserving our resources. Stokei EXECUflVE ASSLSTANT MkbdeA.Petty May 3, 2010 ATTN: All Nevada Radio Stations Dear Sirs: The Elko County Board of Commissioners voted on April 21, 2010 to request all radio stations in Nevada to play the attached wildfire public service announcements to encourage the Federal Government to take a proactive step in preventing wilcifires. Before 1980, there were less than 25,000 acres burned per year due to wildfires. Today that amount has risen to over 600,000 acres burned per year. Since the 1950 s the Federal Government has been reducing grazing on Federal Lands by cattle and sheep, There are less than half as many cattle and over nine times fewer sheep grazing off the fuel loads that wlldfires feed on. As a result, millions of acres of land and animals have burned. This spring and last have been very wet and as a result there is an excessive amount of fuel which could lead to yet another devastating year for wildfires and their victims. One of the easiest and most cost effective ways to reduce the terrible wildfires is to increase grazing by cattle and sheep to diminish the amount of fuels loads that build every year.
