2 Dear Ski Club Members: 2004 s ski trips are shaping up nicely! Our HoliMont trip, on January 2 nd, was a beautifully warm day and had snow that was surprisingly good. Our first Holiday Valley trip is going to have a great snow! (That s tomorrow as I write this!) We still have room on the overnight trip that returns to both of those resorts. Don t wait until the last minute, sign up NOW! (See flyer later in the newsletter.) February s plans call for more trips and to different locations. We ll be adding Seven Springs (can you say outdoor hot tubs?!) and Kissing Bridge on a Saturday. What can I say besides: SIGN UP NOW! By the time we meet in February, our Steamboat Springs group will have returned from their week of skiing in glorious powder and something called a Cowboy downhill competition Victoria will have to fill us in on the gory, juicy details at the meeting during her trip report! And don t forget about that Aspen trip. It may not be too late, but you d better see Gene and/or Annie immediately if you still want to get in on that trip. It will be great skiing and hobknobbing with fellow skiers in Aspen in April! We do have fun, don t we?! We also have fun at our club meetings, believe it or not! One reason why we do is because of the work done by our Social Chair. The Social Chair person (of a possible committee) makes sure we have entertainment and works with the other officers and local ski vendors to provide programs at our monthly meetings. Our current Social Chair, Tom Wallett, is resigning from that job. I d like to publicly thank him for his hard work and all the time he put into making our (otherwise boring business) meetings fun. THANKS, TOM! [And, don t forget that Gene is still waiting for your membership renewal! Old joke, you had to read last month s prez s letter to get that one!] If any of you would be interested in doing that job for the good of your ski club, for the good of hundreds of your fellow ski club members please let me know! You ll feel sooooo much better doing it having volunteered for the job! --Linda Elonen-Wright, Prez Trip Report Chapin Forest Jan 10 th, 2004 The January 10 th Chapin Forest event began with cold but sunny skies. Four of us met at the DEB parking lot for the 45 minute drive to Chapin. We met the Wright crowd at Pine Lodge, but the snow cover was marginal. After a brief discussion, it was decided to caravan out to the Girdled Road park, also operated by Lake Metroparks. Snow cover was much better there, although the terrain was arguably for more advanced skiing. There were a number of beginners in our crowd, but we slugged on until about 3:00 pm. For proficient skiers, Girdled road is an excellent location. There was plenty of cover, with miles of freshly groomed trails. Linda Elonen-Wright did her best imitation of a sled dog, with child in tow. The lack of a warming hut was a minor issue, but could have been a more serious concern for beginner skiers. Rentals must be obtained at Pine Lodge, which is also where lessons are conducted. Plan on at least 20 minutes road time between the two facilities. We went back to Chapin to return the rental equipment, and have some snacks. Pine Lodge was definitely not crowded that day. In my opinion, the conditions reported on the Telephone Hotline were overly cautious, and only represented typical spring time limitations. Chapin was certainly skiable, however I was curious to visit the New Girdled Road Facility. I think we got back to the DEB lot by about 4:00 pm. No casualties, but plenty of good skiing! -Tom Haag, Trip Leader Website: February, 2004

3 Trip Report Holiday Valley (HV) Jan 16 th, 2004 It was chilly Friday morning Jan 16, We got off to a great start. Everyone arrived and was on the bus by 10 minutes till 6am. We headed out to the Eastside pickup earlier than usual. We got there about 6:30am, once again, everyone that was on my list was there and we quickly loaded up and headed to HV. The road was clear but got a little icy as we drove closer to HV. We saw one accident; luckily our bus driver caught it early and it slowed way down. I don't think anyone was hurt. We made excellent time and got to HV by 10am. After I gave everyone their lift tickets, we all headed out to the slopes. The snow condition was just great, other than the frigid temperature of 11 degrees F. (BRR!!!) I really loved the scenery with snow everywhere - particularly Tannenbaum Run and Happy Glades pictured below. I can't speak for everyone but we did a few runs and headed in for some hot cocoa to warm our bodies and then hit the slopes again. Around noon, Mr. Sun came out and stayed with us for about 4 hours. All the trails were open and they were still making more snow. Since we were all bundled up, I'm very glad that we all had the new red leg bands to identify our club. We were able to spot other NASA members. Jim Slifka, our camera man, was able to track us down with red bands (see them on the legs) and got some great shots that you see here! (Thanks Jim). Thanks to all that were involved with the leg bands (great job!!!). We got back on the bus at 4:45pm and headed to Ellicottville for dinner and conversations. Once again we were back on the bus at 7pm and headed home. We saw Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life and Pirates of the Caribbean while relaxing. (It s great when the bus driver does the driving) We made awesome time and got back to NASA by 10:30pm. Thanks for the help from everyone in making these trips a success. (Tom and his kids are in the picture above.) --Tom Vannuyen, Trip Leader Trip Report Holden Arboretum JAN 18 th, 2004 The January 18th Nordic outing to the Holden Arboretum brought out 3 skiers on a partly sunny afternoon. Temperatures were moderate although the wind was fierce when beyond the protective cover of the forest. Despite having to cut trail through breakable crust the cover was good thanks to fresh snow fall earlier in the week. The four of us toured various areas of Holden including the Rhododendron garden which are accessible although not part of the marked and maintained ski trail network. We also skied around Corning Lake and had a nice quiet tour through Bole Woods. The trails were not very crowded although we did encounter a discourteous party of 3 men who each had a leashed dog and appeared quite happy to stomp down a nicely tracked section of trail. The Wrights' made a late start, did some skiing on their own and were found in the Visitor Center as we were signing out. Keep thinking cold weather and snow! Randall R. Dunn, Trip Leader ALPINE NEWS from Al Linne, V.P. Alpine Fellow Alpine Enthusiasts: The snow we have been waiting for has arrived along with Website: February, 2004

4 the cold temperatures. Our first HoliMont trip, run by Malcolm Wood, has already gone. As I am writing this report, Tom Vannuyen s group is heading to Holiday Valley. The trip out to Steamboat Springs will be leaving January 24th and I am expecting some great stories and photos to be shared at the next club meeting. This leaves Aspen our last week long trip. Our next local trip is a week end trip run by Mark Hyatt. You get two ski resorts out of this deal: HoliMont on Friday and Holiday Valley on Saturday. There is a race that some of our racers will be participating in, but you do not have to be a racer to go on this trip. So, do not miss out on our last day trips, I have listed them in order by date. Joe Gruden is running a trip to Seven Springs on Friday February 13, Victoria Briscoe and Linda Elonen-Wright s trip to Kissing Bridge on Saturday February 28 th. Finishing out the day trips is Gene Addy s to Holiday Valley in mid March. So plan now and do not miss out, because the season will be over before you know it. Then we can start to think sailing...hey does anybody read this? The snow is here and the trips are going. So sign up and do not miss out (boy do I like the phrase do not miss out) on a great ski time. NORDIC NEWS Hopefully everyone has been taking advantage of some of the best Nordic ski conditions in years. See the trip Report on the January 10 th outing to Chapin Forrest in this newsletter. There are presently two Nordic outings scheduled for the month of February. Rocky River Reservation on February 7 th, and North Chagrin Reservation on February 21. Miss these events, and you will miss the prime of the season! There are some very scenic riverside trails along the Rocky River, just minutes from NASA. Meet at the Rocky River Nature Center at 11:00 am, when we stride off into the ancient valley. See the attached flyer on Rocky River. Gene Addy is coordinating a Nordic outing to North Chagrin on Feb 21, meeting at the North Chagrin Nature Center at 11:00 am. Explore the enchanted ruins of Squire s Castle. Rental skis can be obtained from Pine Lodge a few miles from North Chagrin. See the attached flyer on North Chagrin. Remember that Nordic skiing is available at Holiday Valley, in Ellicottville, NY. Contact Gene Addy on how you can go on the March 15 th bus to HV. --Tom Haag, Nordic V.P. CMSC Weekend Races Series Jan. 25, Boston Mills Jan. 31, Holiday Valley Feb. 7, Swain Feb. 8, Swain Feb. 21, SG & Bristol Feb. 22, Bristol Feb. 28, Kissing Bridge Mar. 6, Swain Alpine Racing News - Going Downhill, Fast! The season got off to a good, if not great, start with the first race at Holiday Valley. A week of warm weather and rain showers pretty much did in the great snow HV received over Christmas. Enough was left for the few, the proud, the dedicated, to get their turns in on Edelweiss and Cindy's. Any one who had the chance to ski at HoliMont on Friday should count their blessings, as HM had the better of HV in the snow conditions department. Sketchy conditions didn't slow down our team, however, as we turned in a fine performance in the GS on Saturday. I'm going from memory here, but Lisa Lambert scored a 2nd in BW, yours truly contributed a 2nd in BM, and Elise Frankenfield placed 3rd in CCVW. I rebooted and made it to the top of the hill in time to finish 7th in C snowboard. Our 64 total points put us ahead of Continental, but behind everyone else, for the day. At least it didn't rain on our parade! On Sunday, the temperatures dropped, but then again, so did our point total in the slalom. Lisa and Elise were pillars of consistency, finishing with a pair of 3rds. I didn't fair quite as well, suffering the indignity of a fall on my first run, and an all out gate hooking crash on the second. Still and all 30 points for the day, and 94 for the weekend is pretty heady stuff for a three person turnout. Way to go Team! As far as I know, no one ventured to the frozen north of upstate New York (my home stomping grounds, BTW) to race at Bristol. I thought I had a pretty good excuse, though in supporting my NASA project at the AIAA meeting in Reno. Of course, who could resist the urge to turn work into play with a long weekend of skiing at Website: February, 2004

5 Lake Tahoe? Any way, the next race on the schedule is our local event at Boston Mills on Sunday, Jan. 25. This is a dual pole slalom, followed by a GS for the snowboarders in the afternoon. It sure would be great if many of our club members came out to cheer on the team. We should have a good turnout, along with the rest of the metro race teams. Tim Kurtz has joined the ranks of the NASA team and is busy honing his skills in the Wednesday night series. We look forward to having him on the hill at Boston Mills. The alpine action gets underway at 10am, on Croyle Race Hill. Hope to see many of you there. Following that, the next race is on Saturday, Jan. 31 at Holiday Valley. As you know, this ties in with the overnight trip I am running that weekend. Signups have been slow, so why not take pity on a suffering trip leader/race chair and help fill my bus? I guarantee you'll have a great time! Looking ahead to February (I know, this month for newsletter purposes), we have Swain on the 7th and 8th, followed by the Big One - "Combined", on the the 21st and 22nd. After that is the slalom at Kissing Bridge on the 28th. The Club also has a bus going to that event, so come on and support our trips and our team! To all current racers, remember, you must start in a least two sanctioned races to be eligible for Combined. Plan ahead, plan to race, but most of all plan to have fun! See you on the hill! 6 SUMMER PLANNING STARTED Talk has started about an ice skating outing; let me know your ideas. We have time to fit in other non-skiing activities this winter. Also, it is never too early to start planning activities for next year. The success of our camping/canoeing, minor league baseball and white water rafting outings has brought increased interest in repeating these events. Linda Elonen-Wright is putting together plans for a bus trip to Stratford, Ontario for a theater festival. The trip is planned for late summer or early fall; details will be coming soon. If you have any ideas for nonskiing winter activities or would like to start working on plans for next summer, please contact me, Tony Shook!
