1 The Dunolly and District Community News Volume 30 Issue 39 Wednesday 14 October 2015 Donation: 50c Dunolly was all abuzz this past weekend for The Gilbert & Sullivan Festival. The two performances of the charming and melodious Gondoliers by the Dunolly G&S Society, and the delightfully witty performance of Patience by GSOV at the Town Hall was very well attended, not only by locals, but many people from outlying towns, Melbourne, and from as far afield as Warragul and Adelaide! As well, our local children performed their own version of Trial by Jury at the Dunolly Courthouse - we have some very promising young thespians who may become the next generation of G&S players. Their show was followed by an interesting symposium run by Jamie Moffat, who is somewhat of an expert in all things G&S, particularly that of the early singers of whom he played various original recordings, albeit rather scratchy ones, some dating back to 1895! On Sunday the usual Community market was augmented by the Great Dunolly Family Picnic in the Gordon Gardens. There were a number of food stalls, craft displays, native animal zoo, children s games and some wonderful live music by several groups. While all members of the Dunolly Gilbert & Sullivan committee assisted in planning the event, the lion s share of the work was done by Costa Di Biase, ably assisted by his wife, Shelley. We really must say a HUGE THANK YOU to them for such dedication and hard work. It s a pity the picnic was not better attended. Perhaps next time. Our resident monarch, Queen Victoria, opened the proceedings and made regular appearances at all the events. Her majesty (aka Rachel Buckley) is to be thanked for her foresight in recognising Dunolly as being the centre of the universe and arranging all these wonderful events for us. Susan Anderson

Great job done in horrible circumstances! I always wonder about the expression bitten by a shark. It seems to be a bit of an understatement. You are bitten by a snake, or a dog, or a spider somehow a shark bite seems inadequate. There must be a way of conveying the size of a shark s mouth and the damage inflicted other than a bite. Where have all the refugees gone? A couple of weeks ago they were all over the news now we hardly hear about them. More important things like footy and car racing have relegated them to less important parts of the news. Of course they are still pouring into Europe, but they seem to have lost their newsworthiness here. I wonder (spend a lot of time doing that) if there are compulsory lessons in standing behind politicians and nodding when one is being wall-paper to an important announcement. This is often accompanied by adoring looks from any female who happens to be within camera shot. Must literally be a pain in the neck on a busy day. We passed a group of motor bike riders heading south on Friday. Some were sporting Australian flags on the backs of their bikes. Made me wonder what they were up to, as this is not usual. The National flag belongs at the top of a flagpole, draped over soldiers coffins, or on little handles to be waved on Australia Day, or at really important visitors NOT wrapped around various protesters who are trying to make a point. I went around to the Gardens towards the end of the picnic on Sunday. Was entranced by the native animals being up close to a spotted quoll, hairy-nosed wombat, another animal like a small kangaroo, green tree-frogs and a snake or two was wonderful as was the background music from the marvellous Oozin Blues. 3 14 October 2015 THE WELCOME RECORD Volume 30 Issue 38 Page 3 LETTERS THE DUNOLLY FAMILY PICNIC The Dunolly Family picnic was held on Sunday 11 October as part of the Gilbert & Sullivan Festival. There was plenty to entertain the patrons: a native animal petting zoo; live music from some talented locals; great food from the CFA and kindergarten; craft displays; bike hire; coffee van. Everyone who came enjoyed spending a bit of time there. I would like to thank all who displayed on the day and helped in other ways. On that side it was a great success. However, the picnic was organized as an experiment in trying to get families from more expensive areas to come to Dunolly and see what a great place it is and that it has everything needed for day to day living. Unlike many other towns the size of Dunolly, you don t have to travel to get a haircut, or car repair, doctor s appointment or pharmacy supplies. Housing is very cheap here compared to other parts of Victoria and still within a two hour drive of Melbourne. In this aspect it was a spectacular failure. I think we got about six people from Maryborough who came for the picnic. This still leaves us with the challenge of populating Dunolly with the sort of people who will use the main street on a daily basis. Already housing prices in this town are stagnant, and in this market that really means they are dropping. If something doesn t change soon this trend will continue and worsen. We cannot rely on the shire council to do anything to promote Dunolly as a great place to live and work; prior performance shows that their interests lie elsewhere despite the hard work of our local councillors. Tourism is great for any town, and I think the ones in town who are working on that work very hard too; but here it doesn t seem to be transferring in to full-time residents. I am interested in hearing any ideas you may have on how we can get more full-time residents to come and live in Dunolly. Costa Di Biase * * * * * The petting zoo was a big hit with young and old at the Dunolly Family Picnic in Gordon Gardens on Sunday. Most of the animals on show were Australian natives and they really did not seem to mind a lot of noisy humans talking to them and touching them. The star of the show was a beautiful young blue and gold macaw. He really enjoyed interacting with his owner and the inquisitive children and parents crowding round. A quoll was rolling playfully in the sunshine while a sleepy looking owl seemed to be kept awake by all the activity. Quite a number of lizards did not seem fazed by all the touching going on. One spiky looking lizard proved to be pretty soft to touch. A very big wombat was resting in its shady enclosure and was so beautifully soft to pat that it would be nice to take it home. However it would probably dig enormous holes in the yard. There were snakes in special tanks and tortoises swimming happily in their enclosure as well. Kids of all ages were thoroughly engrossed in these beautiful animals. What a great way to teach everyone to protect the environment for these animals to continue to survive in. Music was playing in the gardens as well. It was audible as far away as the Basin. Live music always adds a festive atmosphere and it was very enjoyable in the sunshine. The CFA barbeque was smelling good as we walked past. There was an archery display, a leatherwork stall, glass work, antiques sewing machines on display which were lovely, as well as a potato van and parents manning a fundraising stall. People were constantly moving through this space enjoying themselves, but it could have easily managed a larger crowd. Those who did not go missed an enjoyable event. Vicky Frizzell STREET GAMES Recently I mentioned the dearth of kids playing ball out in the street these days due to their indoor electronic activities. However, lately I have seen on a number of occasions two young mechanics, apparently on their lunch break, playing catch ball behind Halls garage in Inkerman Street. They may not be little tackers but they have restored my faith in young people still enjoying themselves with outdoor games. Cynthia Lindsay LEGAL CANNABIS Dear Editor, I am really proud to be part of a Government which is prepared to do something to improve the lives of sick Victorians. This week, I had the honour of joining our Premier, Daniel Andrews, to announce the Victorian Government will legalise access to locally manufactured medicinal cannabis products for use in exceptional circumstances from This is an Australian first. We re taking steps to change the law because no family should have to choose between breaking the law and watching their loved ones suffer. The Victorian Law Reform Commission s Report on Medicinal Cannabis, tabled in Parliament this week, includes 42 recommendations and addresses key issues including cultivation, manufacture and supply of high quality medicinal cannabis products and patient eligibility. The Government fully accepts 40 of the Commission s recommendations, and accepts two recommendations in principle. A key step to enabling access to medicinal cannabis will be to establish cultivation and manufacturing industries in Victoria to support an ongoing, reliable and regulated supply of medicinal cannabis for patients. The Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources will be given new regulatory functions to license growers to cultivate cannabis for the purpose of medicinal cannabis. The Commission also recommends that eligibility for the scheme be based on symptoms like severe muscle spasms or severe pain resulting from multiple sclerosis, severe pain, nausea, vomiting or wasting arising from cancer or HIV/AIDS, severe seizures resulting from epileptic conditions and severe chronic pain. As a priority, the Government will provide access to medicinal cannabis for children with severe epilepsy in early This is good policy, which I believe will help ease the suffering of thousands of Victorians. Jaala Pulford MP Member for Western Victoria.

4 Page 4 Volume 30 Issue 39 THE WELCOME RECORD 14 October 2015 NOTES FROM OUR COUNCILLOR There has been much happening in Central Goldfields Shire in Flynn Ward. We have new trees planted and old diseased ones removed, both at Dunolly and Bealiba. The footpaths in Dunolly are nearly completed and I have received many positive comments about how the streetscape is looking. Hopefully soon we will have some shrubbery there also. The swimming pool has a new sail and looks very impressive. I hope, with this addition, we will see more people using the pool. The Historical Precinct, which includes the Court House, the old gaol and Town Hall are worth a visit if you have not seen them recently. Congratulations to the Committee involved in this restoration. I was at Bealiba the other day for the BPA Annual Meeting and was impressed with the hard work the community are doing out there. We have a lot of community groups that work tirelessly and at no cost to the community. No amount of money could cover the work they do. A big thank you to all those organisations. We have just had the Gilbert and Sullivan weekend at Dunolly which brought many people into the district; most B&Bs were booked out. Well done to Rachel Buckley and her band of actors and workers. I believe their concerts were extremely well attended. There was also a Community Picnic at Gordon Gardens, an Art Display and Concert conducted by the Dunolly School, and the Market in Dunolly. Thank you to the children and the organisers. As you can see it has all been happening at Dunolly, Bealiba and Moliagul. Come out and have a look! 5 14 October 2015 THE WELCOME RECORD Volume 30 Issue 38 Page 5 ARTS TRAIL FOR DUNOLLY AND DISTRICT The Dunolly and District Inc. committee is looking at the possibility of establishing a brochure similar to the TINY TOWNS brochure, but for a smaller area. To that end we are seeking the interest of artists and crafts people of the area whether such a brochure is wanted. To look at the options and possibilities, we need to find out what artisans we have, what they produce, and how they are available to the public, and if sales and viewings are possible. If you are interested, we would like to visit your establishment to talk about your works on site and to prepare, if appropriate, a short description of you and your available works for the brochure. Could you please ring to have a chat with John Moir on , or call in at Alvah Art Gallery, Dunolly- Bridgewater Rd Dunolly. 6 Page 6 Volume 30 Issue 39 THE WELCOME RECORD 14 October 2015 LOCAL HISTORY GRANTS PROGRAM NOW OPEN Member for Western Victoria, Jaala Pulford, said $350,000 of grants was now available to preserve local history. The Local History Grants Program, managed by Public Record Office Victoria, is now accepting applications of up to $15,000. Ms Pulford said the Program supports the efforts of community organisations that collect and preserve the materials and memories from Victoria s past. The grants program aims to encourage collaboration and partnerships between volunteer groups to undertake projects as well as to develop skills and resources to support community collections, Ms Pulford said. Our streets, our schools, our clubs and our community help to shape Victoria and make us who we are. Community projects that capture elements of our State s memory are important to inform all Victorians of our development as a society, culture and people, Ms Pulford said. Applications can be submitted online via prov.vic.gov.au and close at 5.00pm on the 30 November Jaala Pulford Media Release HELPING LOCAL SPORTS CLUBS SAVE LIVES Grassroots sports clubs in the Ripon electorate can now apply for a life-saving defibrillator, so that players, spectators and parents can step in during an emergency until paramedics arrive. The Member for Western Victoria, Jaala Pulford, said applications are now open for clubs to secure one of the life-saving devices. Medical experts say when cardiac arrest strikes, time is of the essence. A person s chance of survival decreases 10 per cent every minute without defibrillation, Ms Pulford said. I m really pleased our government has found the money to provide up to 1,000 defibrillators to community clubs across Victoria, Ms Pulford said. Clubs will be assessed on location, the age of members and the sport played, but also the number of volunteers who will be trained to provide emergency care. Successful clubs will be required to implement a sports medical plan, so they are prepared to act fast in an emergency. Our investment will mean clubs have the equipment and volunteers have the knowledge to save lives. We re ensuring thousands more Victorians are able to assist in an emergency, Ms Pulford said. Clubs interested in the program can find out more or apply online by visiting Inquiries : Craig Wilson Jaala Pulford Media Release HEART HEALTH CHECKS One of the most important tools to which we have access is to see our health professional for a Heart Health Check. 7 14 October 2015 THE WELCOME RECORD Volume 30 Issue 38 Page 7 Bush Tucker Plants The Common Appleberry (Billardiera Scandens) also known as Apple dumpling, hairy appleberry, and snotberry, grows along eastern and south-eastern Australia in eucalyptus forests and heathlands. It is an evergreen, light, twining climber, meaning it doesn t smother the plants it grows over in its natural setting. They can be grown up some trellises or left to creep along the ground in a range of soils from sandy to clay. Young plants can grow quickly, producing fruits in their first year and, once established, are a very adaptable plant, tolerating light frosts, full sun or semi-shade and periods of drought. Also grows well under established trees. The flowers are small greenish yellow and bell shaped, followed by small (two cm long) fruits that look like miniature kiwifruits. The squishy fruits are ripe when they fall off the plant and the sweet pulp has numerous small seeds. The aboriginals gathered the ripe fruits from the ground to eat fresh or roasted the unripe fruits. Early settlers ate the fruits which they thought tasted like stewed apples, calling them apple dumpling fruits, and maybe the texture has something to do with the snotberry name. Fruits can be mixed with apples to make pies, added to fruit salad or just eaten fresh. This is also a great plant for attracting small birds to your garden, as it offers them food from the nectar and fruits as well as nesting sites within the plant. I ll be growing this climbing plant on a small wire fence between the herb garden and the yin yang garden so I can get to the fallen ripe fruits from either side. 10 Page 10 Volume 30 Issue 39 THE WELCOME RECORD 14 October 2015 DROWNING DOESN T LOOK LIKE DROWNING - Mario Vittone In many child drownings, adults are nearby but have no idea the victim is dying. Here s what to look for. The new captain jumped from the deck, fully dressed, and sprinted through the water. A former lifeguard, he kept his eyes on his victim as he headed straight for the couple swimming between their anchored sport-fisher and the beach. I think he thinks you re drowning, the husband said to his wife. They had been splashing each other and she had screamed but now they were just standing, neck-deep on the sand bar. We re fine; what is he doing? she asked, a little annoyed. We re fine! the husband yelled, waving him off, but his captain kept swimming hard. Move! he barked as he sprinted between the stunned owners. Directly behind them, not 10 feet away, their 9-year-old daughter was drowning. Safely above the surface in the arms of the captain, she burst into tears, Daddy! How did this captain know from 50 feet away what the father couldn t recognize from just 10? Drowning is not the violent, splashing call for help that most people expect. The captain was trained to recognize drowning by experts and had years of experience. The father, on the other hand, had learned what drowning looks like by watching television. If you spend time on or near the water (hint: that s all of us) then you should make sure that you and your crew know what to look for whenever people enter the water. Until she cried a tearful, Daddy, she hadn t made a sound. As a former Coast Guard rescue swimmer, I wasn t surprised at all by this story. Drowning is almost always a deceptively quiet event. The waving, splashing, and yelling that dramatic conditioning (television) prepares us to look for is rarely seen in real life. The Instinctive Drowning Response so named by Francesco A. Pia, Ph.D., is what people do to avoid actual or perceived suffocation in the water. And it does not look like most people expect. There is very little splashing, no waving, and no yelling or calls for help of any kind. To get an idea of just how quiet and undramatic from the surface drowning can be, consider this: it is the No. 2 cause of accidental death in children, ages 15 and under (just behind vehicle accidents) of the approximately 750 children who will drown next year, about 375 of them will do so within 25 yards of a parent or other adult. In some of those drownings, the adult will actually watch the child do it, having no idea it is happening. Drowning does not look like drowning Dr Pia, in an article in the Coast Guard s On Scene magazine, described the Instinctive Drowning Response like this: Except in rare circumstances, drowning people are physiologically unable to call out for help. The respiratory system was designed for breathing. Speech is the secondary or overlaid function. Breathing must be fulfilled before speech occurs. Drowning people s mouths alternately sink below and reappear above the surface of the water. The mouths of drowning people are not above the surface of the water long enough for them to exhale, inhale, and call out for help. When the drowning people s mouths are above the surface, they exhale and inhale quickly as their mouths start to sink below the surface of the water. Drowning people cannot wave for help. Nature instinctively forces them to extend their arms laterally and press down on the water s surface. Pressing down on the surface of the water permits drowning people to leverage their bodies so they can lift their mouths out of the water to breathe. Throughout the Instinctive Drowning Response, drowning people cannot voluntarily control their arm movements. Physiologically, drowning people who are struggling on the surface of the water cannot stop drowning and perform voluntary movements such as waving for help, moving toward a rescuer, or reaching out for a piece of rescue equipment. From beginning to end of the Instinctive Drowning Response people s bodies remain upright in the water, with no evidence of a supporting kick. Unless rescued by a trained lifeguard, these drowning people can only struggle on the surface of the water from 20 to 60 seconds before submersion occurs. This doesn t mean that a person who is yelling for help and thrashing isn t in real trouble they are experiencing aquatic distress. Not always present before the Instinctive Drowning Response, aquatic distress doesn t last long but unlike true drowning, these victims can still assist in their own rescue. They can grab lifelines, throw rings, etc. Look for these other signs of drowning when persons are in the water: Head low in the water, mouth at water level Head tilted back with mouth open Eyes glassy and empty, unable to focus Eyes closed Hair over forehead or eyes Not using legs vertical Hyperventilating or gasping Trying to swim in a particular direction but not making headway Trying to roll over on the back Appear to be climbing an invisible ladder So if a crew member falls overboard and everything looks OK don t be too sure. Sometimes the most common indication that someone is drowning is that they don t look like they re drowning. They may just look like they are treading water and looking up at the deck. One way to be sure? Ask them, Are you all right? If they can answer at all they probably are. If they return a blank stare, you may have less than 30 seconds to get to them. And parents children playing in the water make noise. When they get quiet, you get to them and find out why. Sent in by Costa Di Biase

12 Page 12 Volume 30 Issue 39 THE WELCOME RECORD 14 October 2015 NEW GRANTS IMPROVE FISHING OPPORTUNITIES Angling clubs and community organisations hoping to improve fishing opportunities can now apply for funding from the 2015/2016 round of the Recreational Fishing Grants Program. The Member for Western Victoria, Jaala Pulford, said the annual program re-invests revenue from the sale of recreational fishing licences into projects that benefit the popular pastime and ensure sustainable fisheries now and into the future. The program is open to fishing clubs, community groups, incorporated bodies, registered companies and government and statutory bodies. Ms Pulford said project proposals between $5,000 and $100,000 qualify for the Large Grants category of the 2015/16 Recreational Fishing Grants Program, which closes on 29 February Large grants are available in four categories: Fisheries sustainability and habitat improvement; Fishing access and facilities; Fisheries related education, information and training; and Recreational fisheries research. Small grants of up to $5,000 are available year round. Successful projects in the past have included the construction of fishing platforms and jetties, stiles over fences to improve access along riverbanks, solar lights at boat ramps and re-snagging to improve fish habitat. These licence-funded projects complement the Andrews Government s Target One Million plan for recreational fishing that aims to get more Victorians fishing more often by boosting participation to one million anglers by 2020, Ms Pulford said. Recreational fishing contributes significantly to the social and economic wellbeing of Western Victoria so we need good ideas for the right projects in the right places, she said. For more information, or to apply online, visit Jaala Pulford Media Release CARP FISHING COMPETITION Wet a line and collar a carp that s the invitation from Boort Angling Club as members put the finishing touches to their plans for this year s family carp fishing competition. Planned for the weekend of October, the event is held on the shores of Little Lake Boort as part of the 2015 Naturally Loddon Spring Festival. Club president Alan Wilson said the competition had been run twice before, with a good roll-up each time. Last year, we had 170 people arrive from as far off as Melbourne, Mr Wilson said. We start about 8.00am on Saturday morning and finish about noon on Sunday, with prizes for the biggest fish and biggest catch, among others. There is an overall winner that goes to the angler with the most carp caught plus a big section for the kids, with their own prize list. We get very good support from local businesses in Boort, as well as others from Bendigo. Mr Wilson said the angling club had been active for many years, running monthly competitions and other regular get-togethers for its members. There are plenty of carp in the lake too many of them, he said. In the old days, the water was always clear, but now it s never settled because of them. The lake also has yellow belly, redfin and tench, but they re not the aim of this weekend. Entry to the competition costs $10.00 for anglers 16 years and over, camping is available and participants are asked to bring their own food supplies. 13 14 October 2015 THE WELCOME RECORD Volume 30 Issue 38 Page 13 Guaranteed water supply in the pipeline There s a sense of growing optimism in our farming community following last week s announcement of $1.15 million to support the development of a business plan for the proposed South-West Loddon Rural Water Supply Project. I joined members of the farming community for the announcement held at VFF Wedderburn Branch President Graham Nesbit s Glenalbyn property. It s wonderful to see the collaborative efforts of so many within our community really being rewarded for their cooperative approach. Grampians Wimmera Mallee Water is confident that by Christmas they will have the design and costings completed. Once that is finalised, the community liaison committee will be able to talk directly to interested parties about how we move forward from there. Whichever way we look at it, weather patterns are changing, and we ve had a prolonged period of lower than average rainfall in the south-west corner of Loddon. However, there s literally water in the pipeline available for our black spot on the state s supply grid. News that a guaranteed, reliable, quality water supply is being seriously discussed is welcomed by all who live and work in our community. It also allows us to consider the other opportunities it will bring, from paving the way to attracting intensive animal industries, to sustainably caring for our recreational facilities and supporting the increasing number of people calling a lifestyle block home. Work together to protect your community A taste of the long hot summer ahead hit close to home earlier this week with wild, hot winds fanning fires in neighbouring municipalities. While we were fortunate to escape any significant danger on this occasion, it serves as a timely reminder to prepare for what lies ahead. It s encouraging to see residents heeding recent warnings, planning for the coming hot dry conditions by slashing long grass, clearing their gutters and removing rubbish from their properties. We will be conducting inspections shortly to identify properties that may pose a fire risk. The fire danger period runs from late October through to the end of April. Some things you can do to be fire ready include keeping grass mowed and removing other fuels like leaves and twigs, storing flammable liquids and woodpiles away from your home and keeping gutters clear of leaf litter. I also encourage friends, family and neighbours to talk to each other about their fire plans and help each other out where possible. Solar panel installation achieves emission reduction and cost savings I m happy to share the news that our Wedderburn office has achieved a significant reduction in greenhouse emission levels and cost savings following the installation of a 30 kilowatt solar system 12 months ago. The system, installed last September following the presentation of a $40,000 state government grant issued through the Victorian Adaptation & Sustainability Partnership Program, was designed to reduce the amount of power used from the grid and in doing so, the CO2 emissions released into the atmosphere. At the twelve month mark we have seen a 30 per cent reduction in Council s use of power from the grid. This has resulted in a reduction of almost 32 tonne of greenhouse emissions. Grading program on track Our municipal inspection and grading maintenance program, stretching across 3,800 kilometres of local access and gravel roadways, is travelling full steam ahead. Our works are ahead of schedule with 34 percent of the program complete with 27 percent of the year gone. On the capital works front, 18 kilometres of gravel road resheets have been completed with one kilometre remaining, and shoulder resheeting is also well ahead of schedule with 21 kilometres completed and just 5.6 kilometres left to go. It s expected that these remaining jobs will be completed within the next six weeks. We re also expecting to see The Mincha West Road reconstruction and upgrade starting next week. I take this opportunity to remind motorists to take care and exercise patience when approaching road works. So always be on guard when anyone you re not expecting - man, woman or even a child -turns up on your door. Check to see who it is and use your door viewer, security door or look through the door. Always have your security chain on before you open the door or make sure the security door is locked from the inside when you are home (make sure the key is in the lock inside the door). Always ask for an ID card check carefully (even Police). Genuine callers won t mind if you close the door while checking their ID. If you re still not sure ask them to come back later. You can then phone the company they claim to represent (get the number from the telephone directory). The one on their card may be that of an associate. Bogus callers sometimes work in pairs; beware of one distracting you while the other steals property. Best practice is not to let them in. Or, as I do, tell them you never buy from someone going door to door. Watch out for anyone who says they are in a hurry, don t let them pressure you. Don t let them in. Most utility services (gas, electricity, water) don t have to come inside without notification. Contact your local branch to find out what is necessary. If you are still not happy after your inquiries - phone the police, Crime Stoppers or dial 000 and tell them what has taken place, what the person was wearing and personal description, the person s last known direction of travel and description of the vehicle. 16 Page 16 Volume 30 Issue 39 THE WELCOME RECORD 14 October 2015 SCAMWATCH RADAR ALERT Scamwatch is warning consumers to beware of scammers pretending to be from Microsoft, with the latest round of scams based around the current Microsoft Windows 10 system upgrade. Scammers often adapt their methods based on real world events and they are taking advantage of a Microsoft offer that provides a free upgrade to the new Windows 10 operating system. Microsoft is rolling out the upgrades by allowing users of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 to register their interest in upgrading and then putting them into a queue. Going into the queue means users must wait their turn for the free upgrade. Scammers are taking advantage of this by sending out s claiming they can fast track the upgrade if you follow a link and download an installer program. If you click on the link you are taken to a fake website that looks like the real deal, complete with logos and branding. If you download the software, your computer will be infected with malware. Alternatively victims may receive a phone call from a scammer claiming to represent Microsoft. The scammer will tell you that Microsoft has detected an illegal download of the new operating system and unless you follow instructions to uninstall it, you will be charged a hefty fee. The scammer then directs victims to a website where they are told to download what turns out to be malware or ransomware. Scammers have also updated their approach to the remote access scam. They are now claiming security issues in Windows 10 has caused problems which they can fix for a fee. If you receive an or phone call from someone claiming to represent Microsoft, press delete or just hang up. Never give remote access to your computer to anyone you don t know, and don t click on unknown links or files. 17 14 October 2015 THE WELCOME RECORD Volume 30 Issue 38 Page 17 PYRAMID HILL FIESTA The flavours of a traditional Filipino community celebration will be on show this month at the first-ever Pyramid Hill Fiesta. The event entitled Get on Board Jeepney and planned for Saturday 17 October, will feature cultural dance and singing, karaoke, Filipino cuisine, games and a pageant. Mixed in will be more home-grown offerings, such as a barbecue, shearing demonstration, damper making, bar facilities, Devonshire teas and the performance of a number of Australian bush ballads. Based in the Kelly Park precinct, the Fiesta was conceived by the Pyramid Hill Progress Association as a means of recognising the town s growing Filipino community and building understanding between the two cultures. The broader community has been quick to lend support, with students from Pyramid Hill College and St Patrick s Primary School presenting dances, local pre-schoolers taking part in a traditional Filipino Santacruzan parade, the Lions Club running a barbecue and market, district shearer Brad Peters showing his skills and the museum opening for the afternoon. Ward councillor Cheryl McKinnon said the impetus for the event had sprung from a general feeling that, while the presence of Filipino people in our community was growing, we didn t have opportunity to interact as much as we would have liked. Subsequent conversations with (Loddon Shire Tourism Manager) Robyn Vella gave us the thought of holding a festival of some sort and the Filipino community here jumped at the idea, Cr McKinnon said. They ve been very excited about it. The progress association started things rolling and a steering committee with good representation from around town has moved it on from there. The broader community has been very supportive of the concept, but we still need volunteers to help on the day. Steering group member Marilyn Fernandez said the Filipino community in Pyramid Hill currently numbered about 35 families. Most of those are in town, but others are out on farms, she said. We ll prepare traditional Filipino food, with three pigs on spits, spring rolls, pork adobo (or casserole) and the pancit canton - a stir-fried noodle dish. For dessert, we ll have turon (caramel banana spring rolls), leche flan, cassava cake, and biko - a sweet rice cake. Our chef will come from Bendigo and we re planning for somewhere between 300 and 500 people. Tom Smith, operator of the Kia-Ora Piggery at Yarrawalla, is another who has thrown his support behind the event. The pig industry is providing most of the employment for the local Filipino community, though there are a few now working on dairy farms, Mr Smith said. I obviously employ quite a few Filipinos and want to see them involved in the broader community as much as possible and us with them. There s certainly been good support coming from community organisations for this day and it s a nice feel all round. Funding for the Fiesta has come from the Victorian Multicultural Commission s Festivals and Events program, Loddon Shire and the progress association. Jeepneys are the most popular means of public transportation in the Philippines, renowned for their crowded seating and bright decorations. The Fiesta runs from 2.00pm to 10.00pm and entry costs $25 for a family, $10 adult and $5 primary school children, but all food is free from then on. All of the winning teams were men, despite the fact that the genders are almost equal within our membership. Sam Whitehead and David Price won two games, as did Joe Battison s team of Tige Coburn and Bill Best. Joe Battison simply draws further ahead in the Individual Points rankings. Look out fellas, we women will be looking for a victory this coming week. Also coming up in November is a visit from the St Arnaud bowlers, as well as our AGM on Thursday 26 November. Heather Cooper DUNOLLY SOCIAL CYCLISTS Sunday 11 October saw a sizeable group of riders take part in our first anniversary ride; a most pleasant exploratory ride to wild dog diggings. We returned to Phillip and Anna s home for a celebratory lunch, the highlight being the Pavlova, manufactured by master chef Glynis. There wasn t even a bird s mouthful left at the end. I think a vague decision was made to continue our activities as we are doing. Thanks to all those who attended, supplied food, but particularly Anna and Philip who opened their house and studio for the event. Thanks all. We are most keen to track down the location of the Costello vineyard at Mt. Hooghly which was the meeting place of the Dunolly Bicycle club of Any information to Philip Ashton, Glynis Cain or Neville Roberts on Details of the next ride on 25 October in the next Welcome Record. 24 Page 24 Volume 30 Issue 39 THE WELCOME RECORD 14 October 2015 An arresting mix of rock, reggae and African arts will enliven Central Victoria later this month when the monthly Wedderburn Farmers Market links up with the town s annual New Age Festival for one vibrant day. Based at the Wedderburn Community Centre, the event will combine the customary fresh fruit and vegetables, preserves, wines, honey, plants, olive oils, live poultry and art and craft of the market with the festival s mix of candles, crystals, massages, psychics and alternative healing. Planned for Sunday 25 October from 9.00am to 3.00pm, the day is expected to draw visitors from across Victoria. Event co-ordinator Jacquie Stallinga said attendance numbers had been growing strongly over the year. With the arrival of warmer weather, we d expect bigger crowds and we certainly had a good turnout last month, Ms Stallinga said. However, this next market is the one we ve been looking forward to all year. Visiting Wedderburn for the first time will be Melbourne reggae band Ras Jahknow, containing multi-instrumentalist musicians from the African island nation of Cape Verde, Ethiopia, Brazil, Sri Lanka, Tonga and Australia. The band has soared in popularity since its foundation in late 2010, performing at events such as the Rise Festival in the US, Brimbank Festival, French Fest on French Island, Port Fairy Folk Festival and the African Music and Cultural Festival in Melbourne s Federation Square. Also appearing is Bendigo-based acoustic rock duo Bleach Sean Nudl and Xavier Carthew who won new fans with their first visit to Wedderburn Farmers Market last April. Another highlight will be a visit by representatives of the Yemaya Festival, who are coming to Wedderburn to promote their 2016 event. This annual festival, to be held next May at Fernihurst, between Wedderburn and Pyramid Hill, comprises a weekend of music and visual arts, combined with spaces for crystal healing, relaxation, art and creative participation. Our growing craft and farmers markets will be operating, including some stall-holders from Bendigo who will have lost African Cultural Festival Melbourne Ras Jahknow their normal trading day thanks to the Bendigo Show, Ms Stallinga said. Visitors should watch out for another newcomer in aura photographer Ghandi Mandel, who is driving up from Gippsland with his wife, Wendy. Speaking from his home in Warragul, Mr Mandel said he and Wendy were now retired, but still accepted the occasional invitation to practice their art. Basically, it s about capturing what s termed biofeedback, Mr Mandel said. The subject sits for about 30 seconds with hands on a metal plate, we photograph him or her and, from the resulting Polaroid image, we seek to gain a sense of the spiritual, physical, mental and emotional energies displayed. The camera gear we use is rare and costly there might only be 10 such cameras in Australia and two of those are in Victoria. The October market will also feature wrought-iron flowers and furniture, a visiting artist from Dunolly, a stall selling African baskets and a display by heart of shona, a Ballarat-based business dealing in fabrics, jewellery, art and crafts made in Zimbabwe. Ms Stallinga said this latest New Age Festival the third in a row would have plenty to interest visitors. There s nothing in this part of the state quite like it, she said. It s free to enter and it draws people to the town and offers high-quality produce and entertainment. We owe our thanks to the organisations which have backed the idea from the start Regional Development Victoria, the Victorian Farmers Markets Association, Wedderburn Tourism, Loddon Shire and the local Lions Club.
