Smyth's work focuses on capturing movement and the essence of atmosphere, communicating emotion and fleeting changes in mood created by surroundings and situations. Sinéad is an experienced artist and facilitator. She has worked with many communities, schools, arts organisations and public bodies including the Turner Prize 2013, Thames Festival London, The British Council, City of Culture 2013, Belfast City Council, Causeway Coasts and Glens District Council, Derry and Strabane District Council, Donegal County Council and more. Her work is based largely on emotional response and is derived from every day observations of people, landscapes (real and imagined) co-dependencies and storytelling. She records in writing, by sketch and photographic references, developing paintings and installations from various stances and instances, often painting en plien air. Her aim is to capture the essence of her chosen subject, creating the illusion of detail through energetic mark making, focusing on impressionistic abstraction. Recurring themes such as the contrast between man-made and natural forms, boglands, mountains and seascapes, remain present in the work. Spontaneous, fluid and organic, Nemec s tones are subtle, textured and multi-layered like memory and the landscape itself. 11 T: (028) E: Mon 17 Sept - Sat 27 Oct HOW TO EXPLODE: THE ILLUSTRATED LIFE OF PATRICK SANDERS Riverside Theatre, Ulster University, Cromore Road, Coleraine, BT52 1SA Patrick Sanders (14 July January 2017) - illustrator, performer, artist and activist. Patrick sought to explore and confront stupidity and prejudice in every sphere of his short life, seeking to use his undoubted skills to educate where possible and lampoon where not. A gentle radical; his art is incendiary only when strictly necessary. His death by suicide in 2017 robbed the world of a unique voice and an emerging talent who was just beginning to get deserved recognition for his inspired and insightful work. He spoke out against medieval bigotry and oafishness, and used his exceptional artistic talent to imagine a more enlightened, united Northern Ireland. He was central to the grassroots arts scene, and understood its importance as a breeding ground for protest and political transformation. This exhibition is just a small selection of his extraordinary body of work, his legacy, and his unique world view. He will be forever missed. But his work shines on.
