3 Chapter A Senior Team Directors Mike & Lois Monday So winter decided to come after all, on some days. It is so beautiful, the snow that is, but the cold is starting to get to me. Guess who came back, Mr. SCROOGE. It is too cold for him. But yet he wants to freeze me out in the summer. Whatever makes him happy. November is a month of thanksgiving, take time to notice what is around you. Thank him for what you have. Thanks for our veterans for our freedom. Thanks for our families. We thank you for being our friends. December is a month of giving. Think of the homeless, seniors and children in need. When winter cold can be unbearable. But let s not forget the beauty of the season with its glowing stars to warm the heart and soul. We wish you all a MERRY CHRISTMAS AND LOVE YOU ALL and with many thanks. Our dessert gatherings have been well attended and also the time has been changed to 6:00 p.m. It is NO longer at 7:00 p.m. For the next three months our coffee breaks and dessert gatherings will be at the Steak n Shake. That is December, January and February. Since we never know how our winter is going to be we felt that having it at one place would just make it easier. Talking about winter, remember, that if there is an event that the weather is bad and you feel unsafe in going, by all means, please stay home. Your safety comes first in our book. 5 Assistant Chapter Team Directors Terry & Cindy Hoover Twas the day after Christmas and all the kids had gone home. Grandma and I were still gathering our wits as we let out a moan. The house was still cluttered and looked like a mess, how could so few destroy our perfect nest? Grandma exclaimed as she sucked on her beer maybe next year we should go there! We let out a sigh and started to clean, we reminded each other of our perfect dream. Which was to have children, with grandkids to ensue, to bring us joy that no one knew. We cleaned up the mess, thanked the lord for what we have, thinking next year won t be so bad. So, no matter how hectic or noisey the holidays may be, remember they are nothing without Christ, Faith, Hope, Joy, Kids, Friends and Family! Thank you for being our friends! 6 Rider Educators Mark & Sue Rupert Winter and X-mas is upon us once again. Unfortunately it brings avoidable dangers. First, I will give some tips on fire prevention. Have your heating system checked and serviced. This may help prevent you from waking up some morning to a cold house which always happens on the coldest day of the year. It may also prevent the chance of carbon monoxide poisoning from a faulty furnace. If you heat with wood or coal using a stove or fireplace clean the flu or chimney before using. Built up creosote in the chimney can cause a fire. An obstruction in the chimney can cause carbon monoxide to leak into the house. Not good. Use care with space heaters. Keep them away from flammables and avoid knocking them over. Be very careful when refueling kerosene and propane heaters. Be sure they are shut off before refueling. Use care when using X-mas lights. Do not use lights with cracked or frayed wires and do not overload the electric circuits. These are all probable fire hazards. Do not place lights near flammable materials. If you put up a live tree be sure it has plenty of water at all times. A dried out tree will burn very easily, very fast and hot. Follow safety rules and use plenty of common sense will greatly increase your chances of having a safe and happy holidays. Next I have some tips on shoveling snow. Do not overdress. Overdressing will cause you to sweat. If you are hot and sweaty and then cool down and getting chilled is a very good way to get sick. Try not to overexert yourself and try to breathe air warmed by a scarf or mask will help prevent a heart attack. Avoid drinking alcohol before working outdoors. Alcohol does make you feel warm but does so by expanding your blood vessels. Unfortunately these expanded vessels also cause you to lose body heat much faster. When shoveling try to use your legs more then your back to lift and throw snow. It seems every time I don t follow my own advice I end up hurting my back. I guess if you re gonna be dumb you gotta be tough. These new ergonomically shaped snow shovels with the funny bent handles do seem to make a shovel load of snow seem lighter then a shovel with a straight handle. You may want to consider trying one of these new style shovels. *These are some winter driving tips. These are some things you should carry in your car in case of an emergency. A blanket, candle for heat, a flashlight, cell phone, extra clothes including boots, gloves, stocking hat and snow pants should you have the misfortune of getting stuck in the middle of nowhere. Carrying a small shovel, sand or salt in the trunk may help you get unstuck. Continued on next page. 6

7 Continued from page 6 -From Your Ride Educator Should you get stuck with no help around and you are in unfamiliar territory, stay with your vehicle till help arrives. It is real easy to get lost wandering around looking for help. If you have to run your engine to stay warm do so only after you making sure the exhaust pipe is not blocked and only run it long enough to get warm then shut the engine off. Lower your window a little while running the engine. Doing these things should help prevent carbon monoxide poisoning from your engine exhaust. One last thing to think about is running a home generator during a power outage. Place the generator in a well ventilated area. Not in the garage or other enclosed building. Generators usually run on gasoline and the exhaust contains carbon monoxide. It does not take long to be overcome by fumes contained in a poorly ventilated contained building. Be careful. Also use a proper switch with the generator to prevent back feeding electric into the power lines coming into your house. This makes it safer for the power company employees working on the power lines done the road. I hope these tips will help make this winter and the holidays a little safer for you and others. I could be wrong, but it looks like Chapter A is being asked to remind NW Ohio members without chapters that it is time to renew membership. 8 MOTORIST AWARENESS Motorist Awareness Dave & Bonnie Bettinger Dave and I enjoyed the officers meeting at Apple Valley/Floral Valley Community Center. The route there looked suited more for motorcycles, and warmer weather. We enjoyed it, Kat and Floyd with us. The parts concerning "Motorist Awareness," that are new in 2016 are 1. "Power Points for Motorist Awareness and 2. a video "Look Twice video" to show at Mall Shows. The Look Twice Video is 8 1/2 minutes long and definitely makes an impact on the viewers to be more careful (aware of motorcycles). Also there will be a new seminar, "which I believe will be excellent and a must see for everyone, "Distracted Driver." I'm sure we all can't take our car, truck, or cycle out without observing this scenario. Just a reminder to be very aware of all the deer moving about. We had to come to almost a complete stop three times going home from the officers meeting for deer and another time slowed up for another animal. So dear Goldwing friends drive careful after our "Christmas Party" and one of those deer might just belong to Santa. ON THE LIGHTER NOTE "Old" Is when, Your sweetie says, "Let's go upstairs and make love," and you answer, "pick one, I can't do both!" "Old" Is when, Your friends compliment you on your new alligator shoes but you're bare foot. "Old" Is when, A sexy babe catches your fancy and your pacemaker opens the garage door. "Old" Is when, Going braless pulls all the wrinkles out of your face. "Old" Is when, You don't care where your spouse goes, just as long as you don't have to go along. "Old" Is when, You are cautioned to slow down by the doctor instead of the police. "Old" Is when, "Getting a little action" means I don't need to take any fiber today. "Old" Is when, "Getting lucky" means you find your car in the parking lot! "Old" Is when, An "all-nighter" means not getting up to pee! 9 Funny Christmas Facts Secretary & Sunshine Lady Lori Gonzales Christmas is a great period mostly because of the revelry, the feasts, good company and best of all the time off from work. There are many things that most people will know about Christmas; these are the more conventional Christmas associations including Santa, the Nativity story, the star of Bethlehem et al. However, there are other things that only those who go in search of the bizarre may know off hand. With this in mind, here is a list of funny, yet interesting Christmas facts. Pig head, it's what's for dinner. The traditional Christmas dinner in England used to be a pig head prepared with a mustard sauce. Most English folk are possibly quite delighted that this isn't the case anymore. Witches and Evil spirits are the greatest broom thieves. The Norwegians once believed that witches and devious spirits were likely to steal their brooms on Christmas Eve. Who knows maybe a mischievous prankster stole a few brooms during that period and the legend stuck. Bah Christmas. Perhaps not the best line created by Dickens, mainly because Bah Humbug just has that extra something special about it. Most people would probably agree that Dickens' decision to work on the famous catchphrase was a good move indeed. There is a special act in Britain that actually makes it mandatory to go to church on Christmas day. The act that is deemed the Holy Days and Fasting Act still exists, however, not so much enforced. Additionally no vehicle of any kind is to be used to get to the Christmas service. Forego throwing out your Christmas tree and make it lunch. The Evergreen is actually edible, well most parts of it anyway. In addition, it is nutrient enriched, so if you take the advice stated previously you'd be getting a good source of Vitamin C and roughage. Don't mind that you will be eating a tree; it's just one step away from any other vegetable. Bake your bread on Christmas Eve and it will remain fresh forever. If only. There is an old wives' tale that actually suggests that bread baked on Christmas Eve is mold resistant. While it cannot be known now how many people believed this, it's pretty obvious that any believers would be converted after the appearance of mold on their bread beyond 5 days or so. Lori 9
